ŠKODA in November: Deliveries remain at a high level

​› ŠKODA delivers 89,000 vehicles to customers worldwide in November
› Double-digit growth in Central Europe; a slight increase in Western Europe; a tense sales situation in Russia
› ŠKODA Fabia and ŠKODA Superb again achieve double-digit growth in Europe

​Mladá Boleslav, 8 December 2015 – ŠKODA has delivered 89,000 vehicles to customers worldwide in November 2015 (November 2014: 90,200 deliveries; down by 1.4 per cent). The car manufacturer saw growth in both Western and Central Europe. The tense overall market situation in Russia, however, slowed ŠKODA's sales. In China and Eastern Europe (excluding Russia), ŠKODA sales reached the same level as in November of the previous year. The new-generation ŠKODA models once again received a very positive response from customers. Deliveries of the ŠKODA Fabia rose by 44.0 per cent in Europe; the ŠKODA Superb achieved an increase of 47.3 per cent.

​“ŠKODA has performed well in November, in a somewhat difficult market situation,” said Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “Our global deliveries remain at a high level. We are pleased with the continued positive development of our new-generation models. After a successful market launch, the ŠKODA Superb has far exceeded our expectations,” continued Eichhorn.

In Western Europe, ŠKODA delivered 33,600 vehicles to customers (November 2014: 33,000; up by 1.8 per cent). In Germany, sales increased by 11.8 per cent to 13,600 vehicles (November 2014: 12,100). With this, ŠKODA remains the strongest foreign brand in the German market by a long way. ŠKODA has experienced double-digit growth in the Swedish market (1,500 vehicles; up by 14.5 per cent), Portugal (300 vehicles; up by 14.1 per cent) and Ireland (100 vehicles; up by 107.5 per cent).

In an overall declining market in Russia, ŠKODA delivered 4,700 vehicles in November (November 2014: 7,600 vehicles; down by 38.7 per cent). In Eastern Europe, not including Russia, 2,900 customers chose to buy a new ŠKODA (November 2014: 3,000; down by 1.3 per cent). ŠKODA achieved double-digit growth in the Romanian market (1,000 vehicles; up by 28.2 per cent), Serbia (500 vehicles; up by 25.3 per cent), Bulgaria (200 vehicles; up by 24.1 per cent) and Bosnia (100 vehicles; up by 10.7 per cent).

In Central Europe, ŠKODA deliveries increased by 16.8 per cent to 15,000 (November 2014: 12,800). The brand increased its sales in the Czech Republic, its domestic market, by 18.3 per cent to 7,700 vehicles (November 2014: 6,500). ŠKODA also saw double-digit growth in Slovakia (1,700 vehicles; up by 14.0 per cent), in Hungary (1,000 vehicles; up by 45.3 per cent), in Slovenia (500 vehicles; up by 24.3 per cent) and in Croatia (200 vehicles; up by 35.2 per cent).

In China, ŠKODA delivered 26,800 vehicles in November, thereby achieving the same level as in November of the previous year (26,800). The ŠKODA Octavia and ŠKODA Yeti models saw a positive trend in sales. In India, ŠKODA delivered 1,100 vehicles in November compared to 1,200 vehicles in November of the previous year (down by 4.0 per cent). The car manufacturer achieved sales of 1,800 vehicles in Israel, an increase of 9.9 per cent compared to November of the previous year. ŠKODA delivered double-digit growth in Australia (400 vehicles; up by 12.8 per cent) and in Taiwan (400 vehicles; up by 122.4 per cent).

Warm, safe, clever: ŠKODA auxiliary heating systems

​Mladá Boleslav, 9 December 2015 – Freezing temperatures, icy windows, an annoying cold start: from time to time, winter makes starting a car journey a real challenge. Auxiliary heating provides an effective remedy. ŠKODA offers high-performance heating systems as option or as a retrofit solution for the Yeti, Octavia and Superb.

​More safety, more comfort, less engine load and fuel consumption in the start-up phase – auxiliary heating offers far more than just pleasant interior temperatures.

 Modern auxiliary heating systems ensure an unobstructed view and warm feet. In addition, there will be less engine wear and lower fuel consumption and emissions as a result of a warmed-up engine in the start-up phase.

Operation is also very simple. The systems offered by ŠKODA can be controlled using a radio remote control (range up to 1,000 metres) or using the corresponding button on the air-conditioning control unit. Particularly convenient: the infotainment system allows you to programme when the auxiliary heating should automatically come on and be switched off. The driver simply has to enter when they would like to set off and what the temperature of their car’s interior should be at that time. The electronics do the rest.

The additional comfort created by the auxiliary heating is considerable. The windows do not have to be cleared of ice or the lock defrosted. That saves time and stops your hands from getting cold. The interior temperature will already be at the individual’s desired level of comfort when setting off. There is also a clear advantage regarding safety. Clear windows from the very beginning allow an unobstructed view of the road and traffic situation. Pleasant temperatures also increase the driver’s ability to concentrate from the outset.

Modern auxiliary heating systems not only warm the interior, but also the engine’s cooling circuit. The cold start-up phase, which is demanding on the engine, is no longer an issue. The result: less engine wear. After all, a cold start taxes the engine roughly as much as driving for approximately 70 kilometres on the motorway.

The warmed-up engine also has a positive effect on fuel consumption in the first few kilometres. The auxiliary heating’s fuel consumption in the warming-up phase is however limited. Depending on the model, the systems consume around 0.2 litres of fuel for a 30-minute heating phase. To a large extent, this is balanced out by the saving effect of the warm engine. Furthermore, there will be reduced exhaust emissions with an engine that is starting warm thanks to the auxiliary heating compared to a cold start.

Incidentally, auxiliary heating is not only beneficial in winter. Ventilation can be activated in hot summer days, consequently cooling down the interior.

Intelligent assistants: New cooperating robot facilitates production of direct shift transmissions at Vrchlabí

​Mladá Boleslav, 9 December 2015 – Modern direct-shift production (DQ 200) at the ŠKODA Vrchlabí plant has received an intelligent assistant: An innovative lightweight robot is now aiding employees in the ‘gear actuator piston insertion’ manufacturing step. This is the first time that ŠKODA production employees will be working alongside robots on high-precision tasks.

​Inserting the gear actuator piston, which is now supported by the new robot, is one of the most delicate processes in transmission manufacturing. Employees in Vrchlabí can now perform this production step more precisely and safely using the KUKA lightweight robot LBR iiwa (Intelligent Industrial Work Assistant). Thanks to its technical dexterity and low weight of only 23.9 kilograms, the LBR is both precise and flexible.

“The new lightweight robot is a useful and helpful innovation in our transmission production at Vrchlabí,” says Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA Board Member for Production. “The robot makes what was once a complicated production step for our employees significantly easier and safer. We are making strides in the digitisation of our production. By using the new lightweight robot, our Vrchlabí site is becoming significantly more interlinked.”

The robot inserts the gear actuator pistons with the highest precision thanks to highly sensitive sensors on each of its seven axes. The sensors register any possible contact with an employee, thus always ensuring maximum safety.

The new lightweight robot has been introduced as part of the ongoing modernization of ŠKODA’s Vrchlabí plant. This is where the manufacturer has been producing the innovative seven-speed direct shift gearbox DQ 200, which is used in ŠKODA vehicles as well as other brands in the Volkswagen Group, since 2012. In partnership with the Volkswagen Group, ŠKODA has invested around 220 million euros into local DSG production to date.

ŠKODA is currently expanding the production capacity at the location. By March 2016, the daily production volume will have increased from 1500 to 2000 DQ 200 transmissions. The carmaker will be investing 25 million euros to achieve this target. In 2014, the production capacity had already increased from 1000 to 1500 DSG transmissions a day.

To date, approximately 910,000 DQ 200 gearboxes have been produced at the site. Around 1000 people are employed in gearbox production at Vrchlabí, making ŠKODA one of the largest and most important employers in the region.

The carmaker’s origins lie in the pioneering days of the automobile. The competence and reputation of the ŠKODA brand is based on twelve decades of tradition and experience in automotive engineering and on the craft and engineering skills of Czech industry. Enthusiasm for mobility has driven ŠKODA since the company was founded, and the brand can look back on a rich tradition with numerous automotive icons.  Over the past 25 years in the Volkswagen Group, ŠKODA has developed into an internationally successful volume manufacturer. Between 2010 and 2015, the company implemented the largest model campaign in their history. In the years ahead, ŠKODA plans to continue this success by further expanding their model range.

​With courage, determination and a great deal of pioneering spirit, the two founders Václav Laurin and Václav Klement laid the foundation for ŠKODA’s 120-year success story in Mladá Boleslav, December 1895. 120 years of ŠKODA encompasses a fascinating history of outstanding automotive icons. ŠKODA emerged in the pioneering days of the automobile, and is closely connected to the craftsmen’s and engineers’ enthusiasm for technology in the heart of Europe. ŠKODA constantly built vehicles that were something special, and made automotive dreams come true. These genes have been passed down to the whole ŠKODA team today.

Everything began with Laurin and Klement’s small bicycle workshop in December 1895. At that time, bicycle mechanic Václav Laurin and businessman Václav Klement founded the Laurin & Klement (L&K) company. What began as a repair workshop quickly developed into a recognized bicycle manufacturer. The bicycles, which were a success on the domestic market and abroad, were sold under the brand name ‘Slavia’. Business was bright. Just four years later, Laurin and Klement began producing motorbikes.

In 1905, the company made the breakthrough into automobile manufacturing with the Voiturette A. The automobile had a 7-hp two-cylinder engine and reached a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour.

The range quickly expanded. Back in 1907, L&K was the largest car producer in the former monarchy of Austria-Hungary with nine models in their range – from small two-cylinder cars and a four-cylinder racing car to vans and buses.

The First World War, the post-war aftermath and the crisis of the 1920s affected the further development of L&K to a considerable extent. To strengthen their market position, L&K merged with the ŠKODA works, Pilsen in 1925, which was then the largest company in the Czech Republic.  By joining forces with ŠKODA, the company successfully branched out, relaunching automobile production in Mladá Boleslav.

Several legendary ŠKODA vehicles arose in the 1930s. The first true people’s car, affordable for the Czechoslovak masses, was the ŠKODA 420 Popular. It was followed by other automotive milestones, such as the prestigious six-cylinder flagship ŠKODA 640 Superb, which characterised ŠKODA’s success at that time. The Second World War brought a halt to this positive development.

ŠKODA was nationalized following WWII. Even under the difficult conditions of the socialist planned economy, a number of significant models were created in the 40 or so years as a ‘publically owned company’. These included the ŠKODA 1101 ‘Tudor’, the ŠKODA 440 ‘Spartak’ and the legendary Roadster ŠKODA Felicia. Another milestone came in 1964 with the ŠKODA 1000 MB, the first ŠKODA with self-supporting body, rear engine and rear-wheel drive. The world's first mass-produced die-cast aluminium engine could be found in the rear.

In 1987, the ŠKODA Favorit became the brand’s new front-wheel drive compact car, created by the design studio Bertone in Italy: An automotive revolution for a country in the Eastern Bloc. Not two years later, the socialist planned economy collapsed.

Following the Velvet Revolution in 1989, ŠKODA needed a strong strategic partner. The merger with the Volkswagen Group in 1991 marked a decisive step in the brand becoming one of the greatest success stories of recent automotive history.

ŠKODA’s annual sales increased six fold between 1991 and 2014. In 2014, the brand sold more than 1 million vehicles in one calendar year for the first time. From being a one-model brand, ŠKODA today boasts an attractive and comprehensive model range with around 40 model versions.

Alongside the expansion of the ŠKODA model range, the company’s production facilities have been extensively updated and expanded: In addition to the three manufacturing locations in the Czech Republic, ŠKODA models run off the production lines at international sites, including those in China, Russia and India.

The company has plans to continue their success over the coming years.  This will involve expanding the ŠKODA model range, focusing on the growing Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment.

Christian Strube new Board Member for Technical Development at ŠKODA AUTO

​Mladá Boleslav, 11 December 2015 – With effect from 1 December 2015, Christian Strube (52) joins ŠKODA’s Board of Directors, taking on responsibility for the 'Technical Development' department. He succeeds Dr. Frank Welsch (51) who is now the Volkswagen brand’s Head of Technical Development.

With Christian Strube, an experienced senior engineer will be leading the ŠKODA brand’s Technical Development department. Strube studied Marine Engineering at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. He began his career in the Volkswagen Group in 1991. Following his first positions at Volkswagen’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, he held several executive posts in Germany and abroad, including as Head of Body and Interior at Volkswagen de Mexico. Most recently, Strube had been responsible for the Volkswagen brand’s Construction Development division from 1 September 2012.

“We are delighted that Mr. Strube, a very experienced engineer, will now be leading our Technical Development department at ŠKODA. With him, we will continue to renew and expand ŠKODA’s model range,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier.

Dr. Frank Welsch, who, as ŠKODA’s Development Director, made a significant contribution to the largest model campaign in the company’s history, is assuming the Board position responsible for the Volkswagen brand’s Technical Development as of 1 December 2015.

Dealer Rebranding in Record Time: 1500 ŠKODA Dealerships Now Feature New Corporate Design

Mladá Boleslav, 11 December 2015 – ŠKODA is picking up the pace in implementing the new Corporate Identity (CI) of their dealership network. The AUTO.POINT 21 SAS dealership in in Luisant, south-west of Paris, recently became the 1500th ŠKODA dealer to switch over to the new corporate design just three months after ŠKODA Partner number 1000. In addition to Europe, the new dealership look will be implemented throughout Asia, Africa and Australia.

"Whilst running the largest model campaign in ŠKODA’s history, we are changing the look of ŠKODA's dealerships around the world, working closely with our sales partners to guarantee sustainability. We are pleased to have already implemented the changes in 1500 showrooms since early 2014," explains ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing Werner Eichhorn. "This new look is the perfect platform for ŠKODA’s modern model range. At the same time, we are reshaping all the operations and processes to inspire customers at the dealerships.”

The changeover to the new dealership CI began around two years ago, and the project has gained significant momentum over the past few months. In addition to the European home market, the new design has been implemented at dealers throughout China, Russia and India, as well as sales centres in Australia, Taiwan and Algeria. Be it in Prague, Paris, Sydney or Taipei – the ultimate goal of the new ŠKODA dealership-look is to facilitate fast, direct and open communication with clients. In keeping with the brand’s ‘Human Touch’ strategy, having personal contact with clients is the highest priority. This applies to the whole look and architecture of the dealership, which is very spacious and transparent both inside and out. ŠKODA sales partners are also being trained in providing the highest customer satisfaction.

The new dealership CI is an integral part of ŠKODA’s growth strategy. Over the past five years, the manufacturer has implemented the most comprehensive model campaign in their 120-year history. The entire range has been renewed and the brand has expanded into new segments. One major highlight of 2015 has been the introduction of the new ŠKODA Superb.

The automaker plans to continue this success over the coming years. In addition to sustaining ŠKODA’s proven strengths, the company is placing increasing emphasis on enhancing the emotional appeal of the brand and models, which is reflected in the dealerships’ new image.

Seeing through the winter: New ŠKODA Superb dynamic light features

​Mladá Boleslav, 14 December 2015 – Bringing light to the dark winter months: the new ŠKODA Superb with practical light features. Both the saloon and estate version is now available with bi-xenon headlights including AFS function and LED daytime running lights on request. In addition, the Smart Light Assist provides full clarity on the road at night. In addition, the interior lighting mood can be customized thanks to ambient lighting.

​For greater clarity in night-time driving, the new ŠKODA Superb is now available with the Adaptive Frontlight System (AFS) and bi-xenon headlights including LED daytime running lights. AFS illuminates the road and surrounding area depending on the driving and weather conditions. This feature also optimally adapts the illumination of the road to varying driving situations. The system operates in three modes: city, country road and motorway. The country-road mode is activated between 0 and 15 km/h, and between 50 and 90 km/h. The right and left headlight module are located in the initial position. In city mode, the headlight beam is wider and shorter than on country roads, as this is where the optimum illumination of pavements and crossings is required. City mode is activated when driving between 15 and 50 km/h. During fast motorway driving, however, the long range and illumination of the right and left lane is required. In this mode, the left headlight module swivels upwards and moves slightly to the left from its initial position, while the right module is raised.

An integral part of the AFS is the cornering light, which is active from 0 km/h to 40km/h. The system also features fog lights integrated in the cornering light function. The intelligent interaction of these functions significantly improves visibility in the dark.

Smart Light Assist also brings light to the dark: at night, the so-called masked continuous main beam detects oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead via the multifunction camera. The high beam is automatically dimmed in these areas. Around the marked areas, however, the full light intensity and maximum beam width is maintained. Instead of deactivating the high beam automatically as soon as an oncoming vehicle is detected, the new technology is more selective. This means that the full beam can continue to provide full illumination without glaring other road users. The Smart Light Assist provides optimum illumination in all traffic situations and therefore even greater safety.

Optionally, the new ŠKODA Superb comes equipped with innovative lighting elements.
Thanks to LED ambient lighting, the light effect can be altered depending on the vehicle status: Opening the vehicle will activate ‘welcome mode’ whereby peripheral lighting elements in the cockpit and door panels create a unique lighting effect when getting in the vehicle. In addition, the door handles, seats and foot wells are illuminated in this mode. After starting the engine, the light intensity is automatically switched to ‘driving mode’. The lighting elements will then create a subtle ambience while driving. The colour and intensity of the light can be adjusted on the infotainment system at any time. There is a selection of three colours.

There is also one practical light feature waiting in the boot: A built in LED torch that can be taken out and used outside the car as well. When the engine is on, the LED torch is automatically charged in its holder.

​Mladá Boleslav, 15 December 2015 – Shortly before the festive season, ŠKODA brings emotions to e-Christmas cards: with ŠKODA’s new ŠKODAJIS, smartphone users can now create their very own personalised greeting cards. Over 150 emoticons or emojis on the topics of Christmas, ŠKODA cars, ŠKODA news, motorsport and humour are now available.

​“A picture is worth a thousand words,” says Stefan Büscher, ŠKODA Marketing Director. “The new ŠKODAJIS facilitate electronic communication in an appealing and emotional way. A smart 'Simply Clever' idea to make life a little bit easier for customers and friends of the brand.”

Be it for Christmas, ŠKODA’s current and vintage models, New Year’s firecrackers or heart-shaped hands, these imaginative ŠKODAJIS provide numerous symbols on various topics. The icons are available as a smartphone app, and can be downloaded free to Android and iOS devices.

Emoticons or Emojis are symbols and characters that are used in informal digital correspondence, for example, in e-mails, WhatsApp messages or on social media. The emoticons used most frequently are smileys. The word ‘emoticon’ is a portmanteau of ‘emotion’ and ‘icon’. The term ‘Emoji’, used synonymously, combines the Japanese words ‘E’ meaning image, and ‘Moji’ meaning character.

The extent to which emoticons have found their way into communication can be seen in Britain’s 2015 word of the year: for the first time this year, the ‘tears of joy’ smiley was named word of the year!

ŠKODA: Half a Million New Trees for the Czech Republic

​› Already five hundred thousand trees planted in more than fifty locations
› The “jubilee tree” planted by the ŠKODA Vocational School students in the Mladá Boleslav plant

​Mladá Boleslav, 16 December 2015 – The “One tree planted for every ŠKODA sold in the Czech Republic” ecological project organized by the ŠKODA car manufacturer celebrates: since 2007 the ŠKODA initiative enabled planting 500,000 new trees in the Czech Republic. The number reflects the volume of new ŠKODA cars sold in the Czech Republic between 2007 and 2014. The jubilee tree was planted in the main production site in Mladá Boleslav by apprentices from the ŠKODA Vocational School of Mechanical Engineering.

​A tree for each car. First introduced in 2007, the ecological project’s balance is certainly something to be proud of - five hundred thousand new trees in more than fifty towns and villages of the Czech Republic. As is fit for the Advent time, the half-a-millionth tree is a silver spruce which now decorates the Mladá Boleslav production site.

“As a domestic car manufacturer we care about sustaining the environment in the Czech Republic very much,” comments Bohdan Wojnar, the ŠKODA Board of Directors member responsible for HR management. The project “One tree planted for every ŠKODA sold in the Czech Republic” has been very successful. Thanks to the common initiative of the car factory and its employees half a million new trees have been planted in the past nine years. As a result, together with our employees we have brought an active and visible contribution to sustaining the environment. Every single tree is a symbol of the ŠKODA brand’s success,” adds Wojnar.

Since 2007 the car-maker’s project has been increasing the share of greenery in the Czech countryside. At the same time, the newly planted trees help towns and villages all over the Czech Republic. Special emphasis is put on the regions where ŠKODA’s production plants are located. This year only a total of 70,200 new trees have been planted in co-operation with twenty-two local partners, which beats the annual statistics to date.

From the very beginning ŠKODA company employees have participated actively in the event, helping with the search for suitable locations as well as the planting itself. The active participation strengthens the employees´connection to the places where they live and work. This has been a key aspect of the project from the start.

Community-focused ecological events comprise an important component of the Czech car-maker’s extensive social responsibility (Corporate Social Responsibility – CSR) in the domestic market. CSR is focused on four main areas: traffic safety, technical education, children’s support and barrier-free mobility. However, the topic also includes extensive ecological management and active support of the regions where ŠKODA’s production sites are located.

Seven Million Manual Gearboxes Produced in Mladá Boleslav

​Mladá Boleslav, 18 December 2015 – The 7 millionth manual gearbox came off the production line at ŠKODA’s Mladá Boleslav plant today. This number is divided into six million gearboxes of type MQ 200 and one million gearboxes of type MQ 100. Both transmissions are used in models made by ŠKODA as well as other Volkswagen Group brands. Almost 700 people are employed in ŠKODA’s production of gearboxes in Mladá Boleslav.

​“Producing 7 million manual transmissions proves the competitiveness of our component manufacturing in Mladá Boleslav,” says ŠKODA Board Member for Production Michael Oeljeklaus. “The gearboxes produced in Mladá Boleslav and the DSG transmissions manufactured in Vrchlabí boast the highest quality and absolute reliability in millions of applications every day. Over the coming years, we are going to further strengthen ŠKODA’s powertrain production.”

The MQ 200 gearbox has been running off the production lines at Mladá Boleslav since 2000. It is installed in petrol vehicles with an engine capacity of 1.0 to 1.6 litres.  These include ŠKODA’s current vehicles, as well as models made by Volkswagen, Audi and Seat. The production volume for the MQ 200 is currently around 1200 units per day.

The MQ 100 gearbox has been produced in Mladá Boleslav since 2011. It was originally conceived for the Volkswagen Group’s ‘new small family’ series, which includes the ŠKODA Citigo, VW up! and the Seat Mii. The MQ 100 gearbox has since also been used in the ŠKODA Fabia, as well as other small cars manufactured within the Volkswagen Group, each in combination with 1.0-litre petrol engines. The daily production capacity is approximately 1400 units.

In addition to MQ assembly at the main plant in Mladá Boleslav, the production of the modern direct gearbox DQ 200 at the Vrchlabí plant is another pillar of ŠKODA’s transmission production. Since the start of production in 2012, ŠKODA has invested some 210 million euros into the production facilities there in association with the Volkswagen Group. Furthermore, the carmaker intends to expand the production capacity at the Vrchlabí plant: The daily manufacturing volume is set to increase to 2000 DQ 200 gearboxes by March 2016. Approximately 960,000 DQ 200 gearboxes have been produced there to date. The site employs around 1000 people in the region.

The production of transmissions at these two locations highlights the Czech carmaker’s skill and competitiveness in the area of powertrain manufacturing. This includes the production of three- and four-cylinder engines in the EA 211 series and powertrains in the EA 111 series.

​Mladá Boleslav, 8 January 2016 – ŠKODA has received the Connected Car Award 2015 in the ‘Pioneer-Award’ category for their innovative connectivity solution SmartGate. The award presented by the magazines AUTO BILD and COMPUTER BILD acknowledges the Czech carmaker’s smart solution for interlinking the model range with their own ŠKODA Apps. The SmartGate and SmartLink systems are the driving force behind connectivity in ŠKODA vehicles.

​This is the third time the magazines AUTO BILD and COMPUTER BILD have presented their Connected Car Award, which is given to manufacturers for the most intelligent solutions to integrating smartphones, the Internet and navigation into the car’s systems. 

ŠKODA was presented with the award at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. “We are delighted to have been given the 'Pioneer Award' for our SmartGate system,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier, adding, “With our latest generation of cars, the topic of connectivity has become increasingly important across our model range. Winning the Connected Car Award shows that our solutions for car/mobile networking have been very well received by the customers. As a cornerstone of our growth strategy, we will be putting a lot of energy into pursuing our Connected Car offer.”

Smartgate is featured in the ŠKODA Fabia, Octavia, Rapid, Rapid Spaceback, Yeti and Superb. By using the innovative system and the related apps, mobile devices can be linked to the car to retrieve useful information, such as fuel consumption, driving dynamics or service notifications. Another clever function is SmartLink, allowing smartphone apps to be mirrored and accessed on the vehicle’s infotainment screen.

The ŠKODA Superb, introduced in mid-2015, plays a key role in the area of car connectivity at ŠKODA. SmartLink (MirrorLink™/Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) conveniently allows the infotainment system to be accessed with your smartphone. Vehicle data can be accessed and used in various ways via the ŠKODA SmartGate function. With optional high-speed Internet (LTE), the ŠKODA Superb can also become a mobile hotspot in conjunction with the Columbus infotainment system. Another highlight is the ability to control the Columbus system remotely: Selected services from the infotainment interface can be displayed on your tablet or smartphone via Wi-Fi and the new ŠKODA App Media Command.

The SmartGate function, which recently won the ‘Pioneer Award’, boats many useful applications. Around 40 different parameters on the respective cars can be displayed. With SmartGate and the corresponding apps, the user receives useful information, for example, on consumption and speed.  Values such as average speeds, operating costs and additional information can be displayed via theŠKODA Drive app. In addition, the user can view the route travelled on a map, then save the journey on the ŠKODA Drive Portal, where you can manage data and useful statistics or graphs, and even share them on social media.

The SmartGate apps are available to download free from the Apple Store, Google Play and Windows Store.

Record-breaking 2015: ŠKODA Delivers 1.06 Million Cars to Customers

Mladá Boleslav, 12 January 2016 – In the company’s 120th year, ŠKODA AUTO achieved a new sales record for the second year in a row, selling over 1 million vehicles. The brand’s global deliveries in their jubilee year increased 1.8% to 1,055,500 vehicles (2014: 1,037,200). In December, ŠKODA’s sales increased 5.7% worldwide to 86,600 units (December 2014: 81,900). This was the best December ever in the company’s history. ŠKODA is currently preparing the next product campaign, which will involve bringing out a new SUV model in 2016.

“ŠKODA demonstrated strength amid a challenging market environment in 2015,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “ŠKODA’s modern model range has impressed customers around the world. Our cars are proving increasingly successful in winning over new customers to the brand with their attractive designs, featuring the latest automotive technology, and the many practical advantages a ŠKODA offers.” He continues, “After recently expanding and renewing the entire range, ŠKODA is now finalizing the preparations for entering the next phase of the model campaign. We will be strengthening our presence in the SUV segment among other things,” explained the Chief Executive.

The year 2015 was a highlight in the Czech manufacturer’s model and dealership campaign. The new ŠKODA Fabia Combi arrived at the first dealerships in January. Just one month later, the new ŠKODA Superb celebrated its world premiere in Prague. And the brand’s latest flagship model has been available since June. “The new Superb is the climax of our current model campaign. This car is leading the brand into a new dimension in terms of design, technology and comfort. We are delighted that consumer demand for the Superb has significantly exceeded our expectations,” said ŠKODA Board Member for Sales, Werner Eichhorn. “It is also encouraging that thanks to the co-operation with our dealership network the new corporate design had been implemented in more than 1700 showrooms across the dealership network by the end of the year.”

Compared to the previous year, deliveries of the ŠKODA Superb rose 7.6% in Western Europe, 6.5% in Germany, and in the Czech Republic, ŠKODA delivered 42.8% more Superbs.

In Western Europe, ŠKODA grew 4.3% to 430,900 deliveries in 2015. In December, the brand delivered 31,100 vehicles to customers in that sales region (December 2014: 28,800). In Germany – the brand’s second-strongest global market – the manufacturer’s deliveries increased by 6.2% to 158,700 vehicles (2014: 149,500). The company continues to strengthen their position as the strongest import brand in the country. The brand recorded double-digit growth in Italy (16,600 vehicles; up 16.8%), Portugal (3100 vehicles; up 30.7%), Spain (22,100 vehicles; up 24.1%), Sweden (15,100 vehicles; up 10.9%) and Ireland (7900 vehicles; up 25.1%).

Amid the challenging market environment of Eastern Europe, excluding Russia, ŠKODA delivered a total of 32,700 vehicles to customers in 2015 (2014: 34,700). The brand’s market share increased to 7.5% from 6.6% in 2014. In December, ŠKODA recorded 2700 deliveries in Eastern Europe, excluding Russia (December 2014: 2100). In Russia, ŠKODA’s total deliveries for the year reached 55,000 units (2014: 84,400), with the market share increasing to 3.7% (2014: 3.6%). ŠKODA recorded double-digit growth in Romania (9000 vehicles; up 23.0%), Serbia (5900 vehicles; up 14.4%), Bulgaria (2600 vehicles; up 27.9%).

In 2015, ŠKODA did extremely well in Central Europe: the brand grew 14.8% to 172,100 deliveries (2014: 149,900). ŠKODA’s market share also increased to 20.9% in the region (2014: 20.0%). ŠKODA’s sales in their home market increased 21.1% to 85,000 units (2013: 70,200). ŠKODA also achieved double-digit growth in Slovakia (18,300 vehicles; up 11.3%) and Slovenia (5700 vehicles; up 13.9%).

ŠKODA’s sales remained stable in China. The brand’s total deliveries for the year in their strongest global market rose 0.1% to 281,700 vehicles (2014: 281,400). In December, the manufacturer delivered 28,900 vehicles to customers (December 2014: 30,800 deliveries). In 2015, ŠKODA recorded positive developments also in Israel (17,800 vehicles; up 17.4%) and Turkey (22,200 vehicles; up 58.4%). In India, ŠKODA delivered 15,800 vehicles to customers in 2015 (2014: 15,500).

​Mladá Boleslav/Kvasiny, 22 January 2016 – New record broken: ŠKODA AUTO has manufactured their 18 millionth vehicle since the company first started building cars in 1905. The milestone car – a ŠKODA Superb Combi in the colour candy-white – rolled off the production line at the ŠKODA plant in Kvasiny. ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier, ŠKODA Board Member for Production Michael Oeljeklaus and the Chairman of the Trade Union KOVO, Jaroslav Povšík witnessed the occasion.

​ŠKODA’s new CEO, Bernhard Maier, took the opportunity to visit the ŠKODA production site in East Bohemia for the first time. “Kvasiny is a production site with a great tradition and an outstanding team. You immediately sense the enthusiasm with which people carry out their tasks here. This is where automobile construction is lived, and implemented to an exemplary quality and efficiency,” said Maier, adding, “Today we have 18 million reasons to be proud of our employees’ performance. Without them, the success of the ŠKODA brand would be unimaginable.”

Producing 18 million vehicles is an enormously high number,” said the Chairman of the Trade Union KOVO, Jaroslav Povšík. “This milestone is an impressive demonstration of the skill our colleagues at ŠKODA have in car construction, and their great dedication to the company’s success over the past 120 years.”

The Kvasiny plant is currently undergoing the largest modernization and expansion in its history, for which ŠKODA will be investing around seven billion crowns. Over the coming years, the production capacity of the East Bohemian site will increase to 280,000 vehicles per year. Up to 1300 new jobs will be created in order to achieve this.

“Over the last five years, we have significantly increased the number of high-quality vehicles produced worldwide,” said ŠKODA Board Member for Production, Michael Oeljeklaus. “The ŠKODA plants in the Czech Republic have made a significant contribution to this. This is the heart of our international production network. Since 1991, we have invested more than 300 billion crowns into modernizing and expanding our production facilities in the Czech Republic.”

The new pilot hall was opened during the visit to Kvasiny. 50 ŠKODA employees started work there that same day. The local team receives the first technical information that is then analysed and evaluated some three years before the production of a ŠKODA model begins. This allows any optimizations to be carried out in advance of the model being launched into series production.

Kvasiny is one of ŠKODA’s three production sites in the Czech Republic. In addition to the ŠKODA Yeti, the ŠKODA Superb and Superb Combi currently run off the production lines there. In the future, the production of ŠKODA’s SUV models will also play an important role at the location. Around 150,000 ŠKODA vehicles were produced at the Kvasiny plant in 2015. 4500 people are currently employed at the site, making it one of the largest industrial employers in the Hradec Králové region. In 1895, Mladá Boleslav became the foundation for ŠKODA’s success story. 52 years later in 1947, the Kvasiny plant was established as a second important production site in former Czechoslovakia.

A total of ten ŠKODA all-wheel-drive models or model variants are currently available. In the compact SUV segment, the ŠKODA Yeti 4×4, Yeti Outdoor 4×4 and Yeti Monte Carlo 4×4 all impress with their diverse capabilities. The heart of the brand, the ŠKODA Octavia offers five variants with all-wheel drive in the compact segment: Octavia 4×4, Octavia Combi 4×4, Octavia RS 4×4, Octavia Combi RS 4×4 and Octavia Scout. In addition, the all-wheel-drive flagships, the ŠKODA Superb 4×4 and Superb Combi 4×4, are on sale. ŠKODA therefore has the most comprehensive 4×4 range currently available in the compact and mid-size car segment. In the coming years, the manufacturer will further strengthen its all-wheel-drive expertise, and develop new segments within Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV).

​“The ŠKODA all-wheel-drive range is stronger than ever before,” said ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “Our all-wheel-drive models play an important role in ŠKODA’s success. From 2008 to 2015, we rapidly built up the brand’s presence in the 4×4 sector and the sales of our 4×4 models tripled. We are now preparing for the next phase of ŠKODA’s model campaign by expanding our SUV model range,” said Maier.

Between the market launch of ŠKODA’s first all-wheel-drive model in 1999 – the Octavia Combi 4×4 – and the end of 2015, ŠKODA delivered over 503,900 4×4 vehicles to customers. This corresponds to approximately 16 per cent of all Octavias, Yetis and Superbs sold during this period.

In 2015, ŠKODA sold 67,500 4×4 Yetis, Octavias and Superbs worldwide.

The 1999 ŠKODA Octavia Combi 4×4 was the brand’s first model to feature all-wheel drive as standard. This was followed by the ŠKODA Octavia 4×4 hatchback in 2002 and the ŠKODA Superb 4×4 in 2008. In 2009, ŠKODA launched the Superb Combi 4×4 and the Yeti 4×4.

Between 2013 and 2015, during ŠKODA’s model campaign, the brand comprehensively updated and/or redesigned as well as expanded its all-wheel-drive models. Today, ŠKODA offers a total of ten model variants with all-wheel drive.

In particular, ŠKODA is performing strongly in the all-wheel-drive estate car segment: in the six European markets of Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Poland, Spain and Finland, the brand is the market leader within the all-wheel-drive estate car class with the Octavia Combi 4×4 and the Superb Combi 4×4.

Cutting-edge all-wheel-drive technology based on an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch

All of the brand’s current 4×4 models feature cutting-edge all-wheel-drive technology based on an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The all-wheel-drive system is electronically controlled, precise and quick. The control unit constantly calculates the ideal power distribution between the front and rear axle. Loss of traction is therefore almost impossible. When coasting or at low load, drive is via the front axle, which saves fuel.

All-wheel drive offers a wealth of advantages. Proportional power distribution between front and rear axle results in excellent traction on almost any surface. Towing capacity, particularly on smooth roads, is increased significantly – a fact that, among other things, is also appreciated by drivers towing trailers or caravans. Pulling away is easier; hill climbs are also less demanding. When accelerating, the vehicle reacts more quickly to the road conditions. In combination with assistance systems such as ABS, ESC and EDL, the car’s manoeuvrability is improved in critical situations. Consequently, all-wheel-drive vehicles provide an increased level of overall safety and comfort.

ŠKODA Superb 4×4 and Superb Combi 4×4

The ŠKODA flagship, the new ŠKODA Superb is available with all-wheel drive for both the hatchback and the estate car versions. The all-wheel-drive Superb comes with a choice of the following engines: 1.4 TSI/110 kW, 2.0 TSI/206 kW, 2.0 TDI/110 kW and 2.0 TDI/140 kW. All-wheel drive combined with automatic DSG transmission is particularly attractive for the 2.0 TSI/206 kW and 2.0 TDI/140 kW engines.

ŠKODA Octavia 4×4, Octavia Combi 4×4, Octavia RS 4×4, Octavia Combi RS 4×4 and Octavia Scout

For the hatchback and estate variants of the ŠKODA Octavia, there is a choice of three 4×4 diesel engines (1.6 TDI/81 kW, 2.0 TDI/110 kW, 2.0 TDI/135 kW) and one petrol engine (1.8 TSI/132 kW). The Octavia RS and Octavia Combi RS come in combination with the 2.0 TDI/135 kW engine and automatic DSG transmission.

The ŠKODA Octavia Scout is only available with all-wheel drive. The model, with its rugged off-road looks, comes with a choice of three different engines: 2.0 TDI/110 kW, 2.0 TDI/135 kW and 1.8 TSI/132 kW.

ŠKODA Yeti 4×4, Yeti Outdoor 4×4 and Yeti Monte Carlo 4×4

At the end of 2013, the popular ŠKODA Yeti was completely revised, and since then has made an even bigger impact within the compact SUV segment. For the first time, the popular all-rounder comes in two different variants: the elegant ŠKODA Yeti for the city and the ŠKODA Yeti Outdoor ready for off-road and adventure.

The all-wheel-drive ŠKODA Yeti is on the market with the following engines: 1.4 TSI/110 kW, 2.0 TDI/81 kW and 2.0 TDI/110 kW. Both the petrol and the more powerful diesel engines can also be combined with an automatic six-speed DSG transmission.

Since 2014, the ŠKODA Yeti is also available as a sporty Yeti Monte Carlo. Characteristics: sporty and elegant interior and exterior design details, black 17-inch alloy wheels as well as black roof and wing mirror housings. The Monte Carlo edition is offered for the Yeti’s entire all-wheel-drive range.

​Mladá Boleslav, 26 January 2016 – 80 years ago, racing duo Zdeněk Pohl/Jaroslav Hausman took second place in the <1500 cm3 class in a ŠKODA Popular at the Monte Carlo Rally. The forerunner to today's ŠKODA Fabia R5 laid the foundation for the impressive success story of ŠKODA Motorsport. The brand’s customers also benefit from the ŠKODA Popular’s success: The famous Popular was sold as the standard model and as the Popular Monte Carlo in roadster and coupé versions.

​“ŠKODA is proud of their long tradition in motorsport,” said ŠKODA Michal Hrabánek, Director of ŠKODA Motorsport. “In the 1930s, the ŠKODA Popular celebrated similar success as the current ŠKODA Fabia R5 rally car. The successes of our predecessors are a great motivation for us. In the 2015 season, the new ŠKODA Fabia R5 brought us four victories in the WRC 2, five national titles and the fourth APRC champion title in a row.”

“The technical concept of the ŠKODA Popular, with the then state-of-the-art central tube frame, independent suspension front and rear and the transaxle arrangement was in many ways ahead of its time,” explains Michal Velebný, coordinator of the restoration workshop at the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav. “The ŠKODA Popular scored significant successes both in Europe and South America on the racing and rally tracks.”

Along with the Rapid and Superb models, in 1934 the ŠKODA Popular laid the foundation for the rise of ŠKODA in the 1930s to become the best-selling brand in their Czechoslovak home market and a recognized car brand in Europe. In their time, the vehicles set standards in terms of technology, design and value for money.

The ŠKODA Popular, which was on the starting line of the Monte Carlo Rally 80 years ago, had a three-speed transmission and an engine from the Rapid model series. The four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1386 cubic centimetres provided 34 hp (25 kW). Two fuel tanks with a capacity of 170 litres gave the car a range of around 1500 kilometres. The car’s top speed was 110 kilometres per hour. From the total weight of 790 kg, the open-top body weighed only 250 kilograms; the fully loaded Popular came in at just 960 kg. The crew added about 170 kg to that.

On 14 January 1936, Pohl and Hausman embarked on their journey to the legendary rally. They started out from Prague in the direction of Athens with their open-top ŠKODA Popular. From there, they completed the 3852 km long race through Thessaloniki, Belgrade, Budapest, Vienna, Strasbourg and Avignon to Monaco. On 29 January 1936, they crossed the finish line without a single penalty point. Also, under technical scrutiny and dexterity road tests, the duo passed with flying colours. Pohl/Hausman took second place in the <1500 cm3 class in their ŠKODA Popular. 

The race was held in difficult and changeable weather conditions. During the winter months, driver team Pohl/Hausman kitted out the car an additional hot air blower, thermos-flask holders and an electrically heated windshield wiper. For stop gaps, the passenger seat could be conveniently folded down. The duo was also commissioned to try out leather overalls and off-road tyres for the domestic brand Bata in the Giant Mountains.

Spurred on by their Monte Carlo success, the brand brought out several particularly sporty models under the name of ŠKODA Popular Sport Monte Carlo, 70 of which were built between 1936 and 1938 as roadsters and stream-lined coupés. One such example is now in the ŠKODA Museum’s collection in Mladá Boleslav.

The Popular lived up to its name. The lightweight, low-cost model became a very popular vehicle, fulfilling the long-awaited dreams of a broad range of customers to own a car. The four-seater ‘People’s car’ was not only available as a saloon, but also as the two-door ‘Tudor’ and as a semi-convertible, plus there was a two-seater roadster and a delivery van version.

The ŠKODA Popular quickly became the best-selling automobile in former Czechoslovakia. From 1934 to 1946, ŠKODA sold over 20,000 ŠKODA Popular models, of which a remarkable 6000 units were exported to 50 other countries within Europe and further afield, including China, India, as well as several African and South-American  countries. One major reason for the Popular’s great appeal was its superior reliability. ŠKODA underpinned the vehicle’s reputation as a robust and versatile character with a series of long-distance drives.
