Happy Birthday: Three ŠKODA Icons Turn 80

› ŠKODA Popular, Rapid and Superb highlight the rise of the brand in the 1930s
› ŠKODA Popular became the first ŠKODA accessible to general public in 1934
› ŠKODA Rapid: fantastic representative of the lower mid-class
› ŠKODA Superb: Automobile luxury of the 1930s and 1940s

Mladá Boleslav, 03 September 2014 – Three outstanding ŠKODA classics are celebrating their 80th anniversary this year: The ŠKODA Popular, ŠKODA Rapid and ŠKODA Superb. The attractive trio laid the foundation stone in 1934 for ŠKODA’s rise to becoming the best-selling brand on the Czechoslovakian home market and a recognised car brand throughout Europe in the 1930s. In their time, the vehicles set standards in technology, design and value for money.
The manufacturer introduced three vehicles within a few months of each other – a true model campaign. The new releases from Mladá Boleslav with innovative design solutions were greeted enthusiastically: replacing the former lead frame, all three models featured a modern central-tube frame. Additionally, ŠKODA introduced individual wheel suspension, followed in 1937 by modern OHV engines with overhead valves.

The vehicle trio gave the brand a powerful boost. Selling around 3,000 vehicles in 1936, ŠKODA became the number one carmaker for the first time in what was then Czechoslovakia. ŠKODA also achieved considerable success on the export market.

ŠKODA Popular: The bestseller from Mladá Boleslav

The ŠKODA Popular, which celebrated its premiere in February 1934, was the first ŠKODA model to receive a proper name in addition to a numerical designation. The name lived up to what it promised. The lightweight and low-cost model was an extremely popular vehicle, fulfilling the long-awaited dream for a car of a broad range of consumers, and was a real ‘people's car’. The four-seater was available as a saloon, as the two-door convertible ‘Tudor’, and as a semi-convertible, plus there was a two-seater roadster version and a van variant.

The two-door small car, introduced as the ŠKODA 418 Popular, was powered by a 18 hp engine with a 903 cc displacement. A larger four-cylinder engine with 995 cc displacement and 20 hp followed later that same year (ŠKODA 420 Popular). In 1937, the model received a new four-cylinder engine with 27 hp and modern overhead valves (ŠKODA Popular OHV), reaching an impressive top speed of 100 km/h. The ŠKODA Popular 1100 OHV followed in 1938 with 1,089 cc displacement and 30 hp, in 1940, the ŠKODA Popular 1101 with 32 hp and many other engine variants.
The ŠKODA Popular quickly became the best-selling automobile in what was then Czechoslovakia. Between 1934 and 1946, ŠKODA sold over 20,000 ŠKODA Populars, of which a remarkable 6,000 were exported to 50 other countries. The small car was not only exported to European markets but also found its way overseas, including countries such as China, India, as well as African and South American countries.

A major reason for the great popularity of the Popular was its reliability. With numerous long-distance journeys, ŠKODA boosted the reputation of the vehicle as a particularly robust and versatile model. In the May of 1934, seven young people undertook an expedition from Prague to Calcutta, covering around 11,000 kilometres without a single technical failure. The original photographs of the trip can be seen today at the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav. Additional reliability trials followed, among others, the 1936 USA-Mexico trip of Mr. and Mrs. Elstner: under the motto ‘100 days in the small car’, they covered just under 25,000 kilometres in a ŠKODA Popular.
The Popular even showed what it was made of on the rally circuit. In January 1936, Zdenek Pohl and Jaroslav Hausman took part in the famous Monte Carlo Rally with a two-seater Roadster version of the ŠKODA Popular Sport. Right off the bat, the Popular landed second place in its displacement-class and twelfth place overall. Encouraged by their rallying success, the brand presented several particularly sporty models under the name ŠKODA Popular Sport ‘Monte Carlo’, 70 of which were built between 1936 and 1938 as a roadster version and as streamlined coupé. An example can be found today in the ŠKODA Museum’s collection.

ŠKODA Rapid: Success in the mid-class

The ŠKODA Rapid also celebrated its premiere in 1934. As the big brother of the Popular, the ŠKODA Rapid was a new type of mid-class. Under the bonnet you could find a four-cylinder engine with a 1,195 cc displacement and 26 hp. The vehicles of the first series were available as the two-door Tudor, four-door saloon and two-door semi-convertible. The most produced version had a 1,386 cc engine, and the strongest model, which was produced until 1947, had 2,198 cc. ŠKODA sold almost 7,000 Rapids.

The ŠKODA Rapid also demonstrated its skill in many areas, including reliability trials. In 1936 Břetislavova Prohazka, the then Director of the Czechoslovak automobile club, circumnavigated the globe in only 97 days in a ŠKODA Rapid with his friend Kubias. Their route took them through Russia and Persia, over the Indian desert, then they passed through China and Japan and boarded a boat to the USA. They also took a ship from New York back to Europe. The pair drove over the continent with the Rapid on its own axles.
The new ŠKODA Rapid 1500 OHV celebrated its debut alongside the ŠKODA Popular 1100 OHV in the summer of 1938. The vehicle had a four-cylinder engine with 1,558 cc and 42 hp.

ŠKODA Superb: Automobile luxury

The manufacturer celebrated the brilliant culmination of an eventful year by presenting the ŠKODA 640 Superb at the end of 1934. Series production started in March 1935. From then on, the name Superb was synonymous with very high-class cars from Mladá Boleslav.

600 of the ŠKODA Superb had been produced for the civilian market by 1949. The best-selling version was the four-door limousine with six side windows. A four-door saloon version and a convertible were also offered.
The 5.5 metre long ŠKODA 640 Superb was powered by a 55 hp straight six-cylinder with 2,492 cc. The vehicle also featured a modern four-speed transmission. Passengers were very comfortable on the road thanks to the transverse leaf springs over the rear axle. The Superb was also the first ŠKODA to feature a hydraulic brake system.
The overhead valve (OHV) system was used in the Superb from 1938. The modernized ŠKODA Superb 3000 was powered by a straight six-cylinder engine with an output of 80 hp, reaching speeds of up to 120 km/h. ŠKODA Superb 4000 with the engine 3.991 cc followed.

ŠKODA starts new engine centre operations at Mladá Boleslav

› Officially opened by ŠKODA Board of Management, along with the Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, ŠKODA Works Council and Volkswagen Group representatives
› Investments of around 45 million euros
› Centrepiece: 21 new engine and component test benches
› Competence: 115 years of expertise in powertrain development and production at ŠKODA

Mladá Boleslav, 04 September 2014 – ŠKODA AUTO has started operations at the new engine centre in Mladá Boleslav today. Together with Volkswagen Group, the manufacturer has invested around 45 million euros into the expansion of the existing ŠKODA Technology and Development Centre in Mladá Boleslav. The construction period was just under two years.

The Czech car manufacturer is expanding its expertise in engine and powertrain development through this new engine centre. The official opening was attended by the ŠKODA Board of Management, the Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Andrej Babiš, ŠKODA Works Council Chairman Jaroslav Povšík, as well as senior representatives of Volkswagen Group.

Over the next few years, ŠKODA plans to increase deliveries to at least 1.5 million vehicles per year worldwide. “The new engine centre is an important investment in the future of the ŠKODA brand and the Czech Republic as a manufacturing base. ŠKODA represents 115 years of expertise in engine development. We are strengthening this competency through the new engine centre,” says Dr Frank Welsch, ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development.
“The opening of the engine centre is an important step for ŠKODA AUTO, further increasing the competitiveness of the manufacturer internationally and ensuring job security,” says Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO MB Trade Union. “With this new facility, I am confident that ŠKODA will increase the appeal of technical careers to young people and that ŠKODA will be even more attractive as an employer. At the same time, with the new engine centre, Mladá Boleslav has gained another modern building, perfectly complementing its surroundings.”

Today, the Czech manufacturer carries out significant development work within Volkswagen Group on brakes, gearboxes, engines and components. Together with Volkswagen Group, the company has invested around 45 million euros into the construction of the engine centre – more than 34 million euros into the new building and around another 10 million euros into its equipment – making this currently one of the largest development investments of a private company in the Czech Republic.

There are 21 engine test benches at the core of the new engine centre. In addition to testing new engine generations prepared for series production, highly dynamic tests are also possible on the powerful 400 kW test benches, such as those necessary for ŠKODA’s motorsport activities. Another six specialised test benches are used to evaluate the function and durability of individual components and systems of internal combustion engines.
In light of the growing demand on the global use of engines, powertrains can be tested for the highly diverse markets worldwide – designed for different fuel types.

During the construction of the new engine centre, ŠKODA placed particular emphasis on ensuring operations were as environmentally friendly as possible. The test benches will be able to feed electricity back into the grid or provide power for direct consumption in the building. The heat produced from the cooling cycle and exhaust venting when testing the engines will serve the building’s heating system through a heat exchanger. The savings arising from these measures amount to 1140 MWh of heat energy and 400 MWh of electrical energy compared to conventional systems. This corresponds to a reduction of approximately 720 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Cooling water is sustainably supplied to the cooling towers from the Jizera River close by, saving 16,000 m3 of drinking water per year. Approximately 48,000 m2 of green land is to be created around the new test centre and other buildings in the vicinity.

ŠKODA is expanding its expertise in research and development with the new engine centre. The manufacturer’s Česana plant is the fourth-largest in Volkswagen Group, and one of the most modern in the automotive industry. The existing technology centre was opened in 2008, and has been continuously expanded in several steps. In 2009, the manufacturer opened two climate chambers for vehicle endurance tests and for tests on vehicle heating and air conditioning systems. New acoustic test benches were added at the end of 2010. Additionally, the testing track at Husí Lhota in Úhelnice has been part of the Technical Development department since 2011. This is where dynamic vehicle tests and crash tests are carried out.
ŠKODA is the only car manufacturer in the Czech Republic not only producing but also developing cars and components. Technical Development currently employs around 1700 specialists, engineers, designers and constructors. All vehicles are developed in Mladá Boleslav, not only those for domestic production but also the vehicles that roll off production lines abroad.

The development and production of engines has always been a focus of the company’s research and development. To date, ŠKODA has produced around 11.6 million engines.

The latest evidence of the company’s engineering competence was the launch of a new 1.0 MPI three-cylinder engine of the EA 211 series at the main plant in Mladá Boleslav at the end of May 2014. The new powertrain is used in the small and compact vehicles of ŠKODA, SEAT and Volkswagen.
ŠKODA has been producing the 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrol engines of the EA 211 series since the end of 2012. In addition, the 1.2 HTP engines of the EA 111 series have been rolling off ŠKODA’s production lines since 2001. At the beginning of May this year, the manufacturer had produced 3 million 1.2 HTP engines.

ŠKODA has a tradition of developing and producing engines; in 1899 – four years after launching a company which constructed bicycles – when ŠKODA’s founding fathers Václav Laurin and Václav Klement (L&K) equipped a bicycle with an auxiliary motor for the first time: the so-called Motocyclette. In 1905, L&K developed the company’s first automobile, bearing the name ‘Voiturette A’ – driven by a water-cooled, 7 PS two-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1100 cm³. Further engine milestones during the early years included the construction of the first eight-cylinder engine in Central Europe in 1907. By 1924, even aircraft engines were being produced by L&K.

After the merger with ŠKODA in 1925, the development of engines continued to play an important role. After the Second World War, the first rear engine became a key development step in 1964. 1987 saw the return of the front engine. The decisive impetus for modern powertrain production was the company’s association with Volkswagen Group in 1991.

In addition to building engines, ŠKODA also focuses on the production of gearboxes. At the Mladá Boleslav plant, ŠKODA manufactures the MQ 200 manual gearbox and the MQ/SQ 100 gearbox. The DQ 200 dual-clutch automatic transmission is made at the Vrchlabí plant.

Premiere: ŠKODA Classic in China

› ŠKODA on the starting line of first ever ‘Top City Classic Rally China’
› Inspirational automotive gems: Laurin & Klement 300 and ŠKODA Felicia
› ‘Top City Classic Rally China’: Two trips in the regions of Beijing and Shanghai

Mladá Boleslav, 11 September 2014 – ŠKODA premiere in China: The carmaker will be taking part in a classic car rally in China for the first time. A Laurin and Klement 300 and a ŠKODA Felicia will be on the starting line of the first ‘Top City Classic Rally China’. The ‘Top City Classic Rally China’ comprises two uniformity and reliability trials in the regions of the Chinese cities of Beijing (12 to 14 September) and Shanghai (19 to 21 September 2014).
The international classic scene will be enriched by a unique new rallying adventure – the ‘Top City Classic Rally China’. The participants will experience some real contrasts between the vibrant cities, ancient cultural sites and amazing areas of natural beauty over two consecutive weekends in China. “We are delighted that ŠKODA will have the opportunity of being at the premiere of this amazing classic rally,” says Michal Velebný, Director of the ŠKODA Museum restoration workshop. “China is by far ŠKODA’s largest individual market. The rally presents a great opportunity to showcase two real gems from our 119-year corporate history to a Chinese audience who are both enthusiastic and knowledgeable about vintage cars.”

The Laurin & Klement 300 is a visually and acoustically impressive vehicle from the 1920s. The open-top L&K 300, which will be in the starting line in China, was built in 1923, and has been in the ŠKODA Museum’s collection in Mladá Boleslav since 1974. The exhaust system does not feature any kind of soundproofing, which will surely guarantee an audible experience like no other for the spectators.  In addition, the car, with its high, open body, is a feast for the eyes. The intern also known as 'Makina' L & K 300 is powered by a 50 hp engine with a 4713cc displacement. Its top speed is around 100km/h, and normal cruising speed is 60km/h. The four-speed transmission with a reverse gear drives the rear wheels of the vehicle’s frame structure. The 200-liter fuel tank is located behind the seats.

The convertible ŠKODA Felicia built in 1961 epitomizes the noble elegance of the 1960s. The automotive homage to the ‘Sweet Sixties’ is one of the brand’s most sought after vintage cars, and has steadily increased in value being so popular among collectors. The turquoise model driving through Beijing and Shanghai has long been one of the ‘regulars’ at important vintage car rallies in Europe. And even in China, ŠKODA Felicia is sure to win the hearts of all those watching the rally. With its elegant shape and the distinctive tail fin, the two-seater is open one of the finest vehicles of its time. Under the bonnet – a 50hp four-cylinder engine with a 1083cc displacement, accelerating the vehicle to a maximum of 130 km/h.

The ‘Top City Classic Rally China’ will start on 12 September in the Chinese capital Beijing. From there, the participants will be driving 477 km northwest over the following two days, reaching their destination on 14 September in the city of Zhangjiakou. The metropolis with 4.8 million inhabitants is also known as Beijing's Northern Door due to its strategic position above and northwest of Beijing.

The programme continues exactly one week later (19 to 21 September) with the second part of the ‘Top City Classic Rally China’. The drivers will be taking a 581km journey southwest from Shanghai to the town of Qiandaohuzhen. The scenic route passes through unique natural landscapes, including around the famous Thousand Island Lake (Qiandao Lake), a vast, 573km2 reservoir.

Both trips in the ‘Top City Classic Rally China’ have been announced as uniformity and reliability trials. The China Rally has been organised by Motor Presse China in collaboration with the magazines Motor Klassik and Auto Motor und Sport.

China is by far ŠKODA’s strongest individual market. With 227,000 deliveries in 2013, around one quarter of ŠKODA’s vehicle sales worldwide went to customers in China. The Czech manufacturer has been on the Chinese market since 2007, where ŠKODA has since delivered more than 1.2 million vehicles. Sales in China grew 10.3% to 173,400 vehicles in the first eight months of this year alone.

Crowds delighted with iconic ŠKODA classics in China

› ŠKODA classics make their Chinese début at the ‘Top City Classic Rally China’
› Two cars, two victories: Laurin & Klement 300 and ŠKODA Felicia winners in their categories: Felicia ‘most stylish vehicle’ in addition
› Second round to come in the Shanghai region

Mladá Boleslav, 16 September 2014 – ŠKODA’s brilliant premiere in China: both of the ŠKODA classics participating in ŠKODA’s first classic car rally in China have won in their respective categories. At the end of the first round of the ‘Top City Classic Rally China’ in Beijing, the Laurin & Klement 300 and ŠKODA Felicia landed poll positions in their categories last weekend. The second round of the classic car rally takes place from 19 to 21 September in the Shanghai region.
“Our classic rally debut in China couldn’t have been better,” says Andreas Hafemann, President of ŠKODA China. “The ‘Top City Classic Rally China’ shows just how enthusiastic the Chinese really are about classic automobiles.  Not only did we have this opportunity to present two real gems from ŠKODA’s corporate history, but we also landed two poll positions – and this has, of course, made our participation doubly valuable.”

The elegant Cabriolet ŠKODA Felicia dating back to 1961 made a grand entrance in China. The automotive homage to the 1960s won its rating class of cars produced between 1947 and 1961, and was also named ‘most stylish vehicle’ of all cars taking part in the rally.

The second classic from Mladá Boleslav also caused a sensation. At the end of the two-day drive in the Beijing area, the Laurin & Klement took poll position in its rating category (‘models built prior to 1930’). The visually and acoustically impressive L&K 300 was built in 1923, and has been a part of the ŠKODA Museum collection in Mladá Boleslav since 1974.

The ‘Top City Classic Rally China’ consists of two uniformity and reliability trials in the Chinese regions of Beijing (12 to 14 September) and Shanghai (19 to 21 September 2014). The 530-kilometre first round took place last weekend from the Chinese capital Beijing, heading north-west to the popular ski resort of Zhongli.

The second half of the classic car rally takes place next weekend (19 to 21 September). The participants will be taking a 581-kilometre journey from Shanghai, heading south-west to the city of Qiandaohuzhen. The scenic route will take the legendary cars through unique natural landscapes, including a drive around the famous ‘Thousand Island’ Lake – a 573 km2 reservoir.

Both rounds of the ‘Top City Rally China’ are listed as being uniformity and reliability trials. The China Rally has been organised by Motor Presse China in collaboration with the magazines Motor Classic and Auto Motor and Sport.

China is by far ŠKODA’s strongest individual market.  With 227,000 deliveries in 2013, around one quarter of ŠKODA’s total sales worldwide went to customers in China.  The Czech manufacturer has been on the Chinese market since 2007 and has since sold more than 1.2 million vehicles there. During the first eight months of this year, the number of deliveries the brand made increased 10.3% to 173,400 vehicles.

33rd ŠKODA Economy Run: Every Drop of Fuel Counts

› Traditional fuel-saving competition with ŠKODA vehicles on 20 September 2014
› 50 European teams, 300 km journey; start and finish in Kosmonosy
› New measurement tool determines lowest fuel consumption more accurately
› Environment: 18 ŠKODA models under 100g CO2/km, 97 models under 120g

Mladá Boleslav, 17 September 2014 – Saving fuel, how far man and machine will go: This has been the central idea behind the long-standing ŠKODA Economy Run. And it will be that time again on 20 September 2014. The 33rd run of the traditional competition will be taking the drivers over 300 km from Kosmonosy to Vrchlabí and back. 50 European teams will be going head to head in ŠKODA cars. A ŠKODA Fabia won in 2013, with an average consumption of only 2.6 l/100 km (109 miles to the gallon).

“The ŠKODA Economy Run is a special kind of race – less is more,” says Roman Havlásek, Director of Aftersales at ŠKODA AUTO. “ŠKODAs are among the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market, at an affordable price. The consumption and emission values achieved during the ŠKODA Economy Run prove this time and again every year.” The winning car in last year’s ŠKODA Economy Run was a ŠKODA Fabia with an average fuel consumption of just 2.6 l/100 km. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of only 60.58 g/km.

The Czech carmaker has long been the official partner of the ŠKODA Economy Run. ŠKODA’s Customer Service Centre takes care of the vehicle preparation and inspections, as well as the entire technical organisation of the event. All services are carried out at the ŠKODA Service Training Centre in Kosmonosy.

A new device developed in partnership with ŠKODA will be used for the first time this year: The electronic measurement tool can more accurately determine how much fuel has been used on the trip by calculating the precise amount of fuel in each tank before and after the competition. Each tank is only filled to 75% capacity. Calculating the difference between the two measurements provides the exact amount of fuel consumed. Until now, the vehicles have each started on a full tank and the amount of fuel consumed has been measured at the finishing line based on the amount of fuel left in the tank.

50 teams from the Czech Republic, Russia and Slovakia will be taking part in this year’s battle to be named fuel-saving champion. Kosmonosy will be the starting and finishing point, with an additional stop at the ŠKODA plant in Kvasiny. Only ŠKODA vehicles running on petrol or diesel can be entered into the competition.

There are five evaluation categories, based on the lowest CO2 emissions, calculated by the vehicle’s total consumption. The results will also include the average speed, as well as the difference between the actual consumption and standard fuel consumption in the manufacturer’s guide book. Should two vehicles achieve identical consumption and CO2 emission values, the higher average speed or larger engine capacity shall be the decisive factor.

ŠKODA is working hard to reduce the consumption and CO2 emissions across their entire range. In total, 18 ŠKODA models and model versions produce CO2 emissions of less than 100 g/km, and 97 ŠKODA models emit less than 120g CO2/km. It is the ŠKODA GreenLine and Green tec models that offer the most environmentally friendly mobility. These versions are available for each series in the ŠKODA range. Another important pillar in this environmental campaign is the natural gas engine. ŠKODA offers three attractive G-TEC models – the Citigo G-TEC, Octavia G-TEC und Octavia Combi G-TEC. ŠKODA offers individual mobility, starting at only 79g CO2/km with the natural gas powered city car – the ŠKODA Citigo G-TEC.

The new third generation ŠKODA Fabia will be setting the latest benchmarks in environmentally friendly mobility in autumn 2014. The completely redesigned small car is up to 17% more economical than its predecessor. The Fabia GreenLine, available towards the end of 2015, will run on an average of only 3.1 l diesel/100km, 91 miles to the gallon, emitting just 82 g CO2/km.

Gold for ŠKODA Logistics System: Best in Europe

› ŠKODA logistics wins ‘European Gold Medal in Logistics and Supplier Chain’
› Modern production logistics: key to ŠKODA’s production
› State-of-the-art supply of parts and components contributing to ŠKODA’s growth

Mladá Boleslav/Brussels, 19 September 2014 –ŠKODA’s logistics system is number one: ŠKODA’s production area has come out on top in the ‘European Gold Medal in Logistics and Supplier Chain’ competition. By presenting this award, the European Logistics Association (ELA) has acknowledged the top quality and high efficiency of ŠKODA’s internationally oriented logistics system.

Logistics systems are among the crucial success factors in automotive production. ŠKODA’s top ranking once again underlines the outstanding level of ŠKODA’s production logistics. The manufacturer had already received an award earlier this year in March for ‘Logistics Project of the Year in the Czech Republic’.

The European Gold medal for logistics and supply chain management, organised by the European Logistics Association (ELA) is based on a similar principle to the Champions League. The ELA is a federation of 30 national organizations from Central and Western European countries. Only the winning projects from national competitions reach the European final. After winning the national title ‘Logistics Project of the Year’ in the Czech Republic in March 2014, ŠKODA’s logistics area continued their success and presented their innovative solutions in Brussels. The expert jury narrowed 30 of the best national logistics projects down to just six finalists, selecting companies in various industrial sectors.

“We are delighted to have been recognised at a European level,” says Jiří Cee, Head of ŠKODA’s Logistics. “Over recent years, ŠKODA has invested heavily in their production logistics, and consistently fine-tuned the area to the highest efficiency, perfecting the processes. The result has been one of the most powerful logistics systems in the automotive industry. It is here that the production area is making a significant contribution to ŠKODA’s growth strategy.”

The sophisticated, powerful and internationally oriented system at ŠKODA ensures that the right vehicle parts and components are available across the entire logistics chain at the right time, at the right place and to the required quantity. The entire logistics process incorporates 13 ŠKODA production facilities around the world. Between January and August 2014 ŠKODA produced 696,600 vehicles – more than ever before in the first eight months of a year.
As part of their growth strategy, the Czech manufacturer has expanded and modernized key areas of their logistics. Since the beginning of 2013, the new ŠKODA Logistics Centre has been setting new standards in terms of design, size and conveyor systems at the main factory in Mladá Boleslav. 33 high bay racks have been installed in a 15,500m2, 18-metre-high, semi-automated logistics hall to supply the site’s vehicle and powertrain production areas with materials. A fully automatic, 60-meter conveyor tunnel to the M13 production hall and state-of-the-art warehouse technology ensure the fast, flexible and highly efficient supply of parts.

The Mladá Boleslav plant has been using a new fully automatic transport trolley for a year. This is an automated guided transport system that delivers the necessary parts and components directly to the shelves on the assembly line. This saves time and money. The use of new ‘pick-by’ systems has also made a significant contribution to the plant’s efficiency, ensuring the necessary parts are delivered to the assembly line exactly when they are needed – the so-called ‘Just-in Sequence’. Since the end of last year, ŠKODA has been using a new solution a sequence container with ‘Pick-by-Frame’. This technology helps the employees when loading the picking cart and makes the process safer.
The newly opened ŠKODA Parts Centre has been a supporting pillar of ŠKODA’s Logistics since April 2013. As part of its modernization, the total area of the central warehouse doubled to more than 100,000m2 – the equivalent of 12 football pitches. In total the company has invested around EUR 31.8 million into the new centre. With approximately 25,000 daily deliveries, the ŠKODA Parts Centre is responsible for an important part of the global supply of genuine parts and accessories for ŠKODA AUTO, as well as the Group brands VW, Audi and Seat. It is the largest genuine parts centre in the Czech Republic.

Currently, around 1250 people are employed in ŠKODA’s production process, ensuring that millions of parts, components and vehicle systems are transported to where they are required. Every year, approximately 52,000 shipments are transported by rail alone to and from the three Czech ŠKODA plants. In addition, 469,000 truckloads are sent to and from these same locations each year. The warehouse and logistic areas also cover vast spaces: at the three plants of Mladá Boleslav, Kvasiny und Vrchlabí in the Czech Republic, the logistics areas cover a total of 321,000m2 – as large as 40 football pitches.

ŠKODA Economy Run 2014: ŠKODA Octavia wins with 95,756 MPG

› Jiří Pilný and Petr Šíma take the victory in a ŠKODA Octavia Combi at the 33rd ŠKODA Economy Run
› Low emissions: winning car ŠKODA Octavia at only 77.88 g CO2/km
› ŠKODA vehicles in fuel-saving competition on 20 September 2014
› Best for the environment: 18 ŠKODA models emit less than 100 g CO2/km

Mladá Boleslav, 21. September 2014 – And the winner is: ŠKODA Octavia Combi 2.0 TDI DPF/103 kW (2006) at 33rd ŠKODA Economy Run. The driver team Jiří Pilný and Petr Šíma managed to achieve the lowest consumption of all participants in a ŠKODA Octavia at only 2.95 l/100 km (95,756 MPG) at the traditional fuel-saving competition. The achieved fuel consumption is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 77.88 g/km.

The 33rd Economy Run took place on 20 September 2014. “It was made clear once again at this year’s ŠKODA Economy Run how efficiently and economically you can get from A to B in a ŠKODA,” says Roman Havlásek, Head of After Sales at ŠKODA AUTO. “We would like to congratulate Jiří Pilný and Petr Šíma on achieving such an excellent result of just 2.95 l/100 km. Reducing vehicle consumption and emissions across the entire range is of the highest priority for ŠKODA. The results show that we are on the right track, and ŠKODA has significantly improved these vales step by step.”
A total of 48 teams took part in this year’s ŠKODA Economy Run. At the one-day competition, only ŠKODA vehicles were registered, running on either gasoline or diesel. The starting and finishing line of the 309km route was Kosmonosy near the headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. There was a brief pit stop at the ŠKODA AUTO plant in Kvasiny.
For many years, ŠKODA has been the official partner of the ŠKODA Economy Run. The ŠKODA Customer Service department was responsible for the technical preparation and checks of vehicles, as well as the technical organisation of the event. All vehicle servicing took place at the ŠKODA Service Centre in Kosmonosy.

Divided into five categories, the participants were assessed on the basis of the lowest CO2 emissions, calculated from the vehicle’s total consumption. The average speed achieved and the difference between the actual consumption and the standard consumption (from the manufacturer’s handbook) were also taken into account. In cases where identical consumption and CO2 emissions were recorded, the higher average speed or larger engine capacity was the decisive factor.
ŠKODA offers three attractive G-TEC models – the Citigo G-TEC, Octavia G-TEC und Octavia Estate G-TEC.

The Fabia GreenLine, available towards the end of 2015, will run on an average of only 3.1 l diesel/100km, 91 MPG, emitting just 82 g CO2/km.

Delightful ŠKODA Classics at Chinese Premiere

› ŠKODA taking part in Chinese classic car rally for the first time
› ŠKODA Felicia and Laurin & Klement fascinated Chinese fans
› ‘Top City Classic Rally China’: two journeys in the regions of Beijing and Shanghai with thousands of enthusiastic car fans

Mladá Boleslav, 22 September 2014 – Over the last two weekends, tens of thousands of people flocked to the first ‘Top City Classic Rally China’, delighted with ŠKODA’s magnificent debut appearance. After the victories in their rating classes at the opening in Beijing, the ŠKODA classics Felicia and Laurin & Klement also showed their best side in Shanghai (19 to 21 September).
This was the first time that the Czech brand had taken part in a rally in China at the ‘Top City Classic Rally China’. The two cars ŠKODA entered into the rally were a convertible ŠKODA Felicia built in 1961 and a Laurin & Klement 300 from 1923. The L&K 300 was the oldest vehicle of all those on the starting field.

After the glorious ŠKODA premiere at their first rally weekend in Beijing, where both ŠKODA classics came top in their class a week ago, the ŠKODA Felicia and the Laurin & Klement were also on top form at their appearance in the Shanghai region. The ŠKODA Felicia finished second in the overall ratings, and even took he poll position on the first day of the rally. The Laurin & Klement 300 wood the crowds, being the oldest vehicle on the starting field.

“That was a great ŠKODA Classic debut in China, and, at the same time, the best publicity for the brand,” says Andreas Hafemann, President of ŠKODA China. “The enthusiasm the crowds show for our classic cars demonstrates how interested the people are in our history, and reiterates the fascination our customers in China have with our automotive gems. ŠKODA plans to grow further on the Chinese market. Emotional appearances like at this rally strengthen our image over the long term, and make an important contribution to our growth strategy.”

The ‘Top City Classic Rally China’ comprised two uniformity and reliability trials in the regions of Metropolitan Beijing (12 to 14 September) and Shanghai (19 to 21 September). The participants took a 581-kilometre journey from Shanghai, heading south-west to the city of Qiandaohuzhen. The scenic route led the legendary cars over unique natural landscapes, including a drive around the famous ‘Thousand Island’ Lake – a 573 km2 reservoir.

The first journey – a week earlier – took the drivers on a two-day journey from the capital city Beijing 530km north-west to the popular ski resort in Zhongli.

Both rounds of the ‘Top City Rally China’ were uniformity and reliability trials.

› Sales of Octavia series increased 41.4% in Western Europe by the end of August
› New ŠKODA Octavia Scout now completes third model generation
› The Magnificent Seven: from the most eco-friendly to the fastest Octavia ever
› All-rounder: family car, spacious, off-roader, sporty, economical, CNG and adventure
› Heart of the brand conquers new consumer groups around the world

Mladá Boleslav, 23 September 2014 –The ŠKODA Octavia is in a class of its own in every respect. The ŠKODA Octavia Scout now completes the third-generation Octavia series: the Octavia, Octavia Combi and Octavia Combi 4x4, the Octavia RS, Octavia G-TEC and the Octavia Scout. Alongside these versions are the environmentally friendly Octavia GreenLine and the exclusive Octavia L&K model. With its versatility and outstanding features, the new ŠKODA Octavia has taken the market by storm. In Western Europe, sales of the bestseller increased 41.4% between January and August this year compared to the same period in 2013, and has set new sales records in many countries around the world.
Since introducing the third model generation in early 2013, ŠKODA has already delivered more than 344,000 Octavias and Octavia Combis to customers. In addition, the new ŠKODA Octavia is one of the most awarded vehicles in its class, and has won against premium brands in comparison tests.

“The third generation of the Octavia sets new standards in terms of space, quality, design, technology and value for money,” says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Head of Sales and Marketing. “The ŠKODA Octavia shows the power of the brand as an important pillar in our international growth strategy.  We are very confident that the ŠKODA Octavia will continue to establish itself over the coming years, and will win over new consumer groups around the world.”

Versatile: Seven fantastic versions since early 2013

The Czech carmaker’s most important model series is more attractive and varied than ever before. The ŠKODA Octavia was launched on the European market in early 2013. The new ŠKODA Octavia Combi followed shortly afterwards in May 2013. In mid-2013 the new four-wheel drive ŠKODA Octavia Combi 4×4 made its debut alongside the new ŠKODA Octavia RS – the fastest series-produced Octavia of all time. The ŠKODA Octavia GreenLine has been the most environmentally friendly ŠKODA Octavia since the end of 2013, consuming only 3.2l diesel/100km (88MPG) – corresponding to CO2 emissions of merely 85g/km. This year saw the premieres of the new ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC powered by natural gas, and most recently the new ŠKODA Octavia Scout, a mighty all-rounder with powerful off-road capabilities. Additionally, the exclusive ŠKODA Octavia L&K-version has been available on European markets for several months.

Up 41.4% in Western Europe

The broad Octavia range has been doing exceptionally well on the markets. Western European sales of the Octavia and Octavia Combi have risen 41.4% to 98,100 vehicles delivered in the eight months of 2014. Worldwide, ŠKODA delivered almost 249,100 ŠKODA Octavias (all variants), or approximately 37% of the brand’s total sales in this period.

In the first eight months of this year the ŠKODA Octavia was the best-selling new vehicle in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland. The successful model recorded the best six months of all time in the markets of the UK, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg, Turkey, Israel, New Zealand, Palestine and Algeria.

The new ŠKODA Octavia Combi has also done particularly well in Europe, where the model became the best-selling estate model overall in the first eight months of this year with sales of 99,400 units. The estate version accounted for 61% of the all the Octavias sold in Europe, and even 77% in Western Europe.

The four-wheel drive ŠKODA Octavia Combi 4×4 took a considerable share of this figure. More than 12.5% of the Octavias sold in Western Europe between January and August this year were fitted with four-wheel drive. During this period, the model was the best-selling four-wheel drive estate car in the compact class in Switzerland and Sweden. The best four-wheel drive Octavia ever boasts the best handling characteristics on and off the road. This is made possible through modern technology, based on a fifth-generation Haldex coupling, combined with powerful engines and innovative chassis technology.

The new ŠKODA Octavia RS is the epitome of advance technology made in Mladá Boleslav. In the first eight months of 2014, 18,400 customers around the world opted for the racy sports model – more than ever before in this time period. The new RS is the fastest series-produced Octavia of all time and reaches a top speed of 248km/h (154mph).

Cornerstone of the growth strategy

The new ŠKODA Octavia is the key model in the Czechs’ international growth strategy. Over the coming years, ŠKODA plans to increase their sales worldwide to at least 1.5 million vehicles per year. Besides Europe, the manufacturer will be relying in particular on the international growth markets of China, Russia and India.

The new ŠKODA Octavia celebrated its sales premiere in in China in May 2014. The model is produced at one of Shanghai Volkswagen’s plants. The new Octavia has been available in Russia since mid-2013, rolling off the production lines at the GAZ plant in Nizhny Novgorod, in partnership with the Volkswagen Group Russia and the Russian car manufacturer GAZ. Production is carried out from CKD – going through the areas of body shop, paint shop and assembly. In India, the latest generation of the bestseller has been produced at the plant in Aurangabad since August 2013.

A tradition of success

ŠKODA is continuing the great success story of the ŠKODA Octavia with the third generation of this model. The Octavia symbolizes the rapid rise of the brand over the past two decades like no other. Its introduction in 1996 connects the brand’s development into an international car manufacturer with a presence on over 100 markets around the world.  Between 1996 and August 2014, ŠKODA delivered 4.4 million Octavias to customers worldwide, which corresponds to around 40% of ŠKODA’s total sales within that period.

Tradition of success: 80 years of ŠKODA Kvasiny

› Kvasiny automotive plant was opened in 1934; part of ŠKODA since 1947
› Birthplace of outstanding ŠKODA models; more than 1.5M ŠKODAs produced at Kvasiny to date
› Cornerstone of ŠKODA manufacturing network: three models, 4200 employees
› ŠKODA growth strategy: Kvasiny plant to manufacture additional model

Kvasiny, 23 September 2014 – The ŠKODA AUTO Kvasiny plant celebrates 80 years of operation. Cars have been built at this East-Bohemian site since 1934, and ŠKODA vehicles have been running off the production lines since 1947. Today, around 4200 ŠKODA employees work on manufacturing the ŠKODA Superb, Yeti and Roomster models at Kvasiny. The plant is a cornerstone in ŠKODA’s global production network, and also the largest employer in the East-Bohemian region of Hradec Králové. As part of their growth strategy, the Czech manufacturer will be extensively modernizing and expanding the site over the next few years in partnership with the Volkswagen Group. An additional model is also in the pipeline for the production lines at Kvasiny. The future of the site has also been secured thanks to the help of the trade union KOVO MB.

“80 Years of automotive production at Kvasiny – this anniversary once again underlines the great tradition of the Czech automotive industry,” says ŠKODA Head of Production Michael Oeljeklaus. Over 1.5 million vehicles have left the production lines at Kvasiny since 1934. “It is based on this East-Bohemian industrial tradition and the work of an excellent team that the plant is a cornerstone of our international production network today, and plays a key role in ŠKODA’s growth strategy. Over the coming years, the site’s annual production volume will continue to increase. In order to achieve this growth, we will be investing heavily in the Kvasiny site, making Kvasiny a centre of excellence in the production of SUV vehicles among other things.”

Automobiles have been produced at Kvasiny since 1934. The first ŠKODA to be built at the automotive plant in 1947 was the ŠKODA Superb, a luxury model of its time. Over the following decades, the East-Bohemian site produced a number of popular and occasionally legendary ŠKODA models, such as the two-seater convertible ŠKODA Felicia (1958-1964), the ŠKODA 110 R Coupé (1970-1980) and the ŠKODA Pick-up/VW Caddy Pick-up (1995-2001).
One crucial milestone in recent years has been the 2001 production launch of the first ŠKODA Superb of the modern era. The new ŠKODA flagship marked the beginning of the rapid expansion and modernization of the site into a powerful state-of-the-art automotive plant, which began 13 years ago. ŠKODA invested around EUR190 million in partnership with the Volkswagen Group to ensure that Kvasiny could launch the production of the ŠKODA Superb at the turn of the millennium.

The ŠKODA production site has been expanded step by step since 2001. 2006 saw the launch of new ŠKODA Roomster - made in Kvasiny. This is also true of the ŠKODA Yeti, which the manufacturer sent to the market as the first ŠKODA Compact SUV in 2009.

With the expansion of the range produced in Kvasiny, the location’s production volume has increased eightfold from 20,000 to 150,000 vehicles annually since 2002. The end of 2013 saw the 1.5 millionth vehicle to be produced at Kvasiny. Today, the site produces the ŠKODA Superb, Yeti and Roomster models.

As part of ŠKODA’s model campaign, around EUR 650 million was invested into the plant between 2001 and 2013, including significant measures in environmental protection. In mid-2013 the location began operating a new combined heat and power plant (CHP), thanks to which the local CO2 emissions have decreased 10% (reduction of 8000 tonnes of CO2) per year. This environmental protection measure alone cost the company around EUR 3 million in investments. The CHP plant won the company the ‘Environmental Project of the Year’ award in the Czech Republic.

Over the coming years, ŠKODA will continue to expand the Kvasiny plant. A new body shop is to be built, in addition to expanding the assembly and logistics areas and the renovation of the plant’s infrastructure. Currently employing around 4200 people, the ŠKODA Kvasiny plant is the largest industrial employer in the Hradec Králové region. During the early 1990s, when ŠKODA joined forces with Volkswagen, the number of employees stood at only 500 people. That number rose to more than 4000 over the following two decades. Furthermore, ŠKODA is involved in many social projects within the region. “Our social commitment to the regions where we operate is of particular importance to us, and we support this with projects that make a real difference,” says ŠKODA Board Member for HR, Bohdan Wojnar. The main focus of the commitment lies in supporting education, technical training, road safety and environmental protection.

Prêt-à-porter: New ŠKODA Fabia and new ŠKODA Fabia Combi debut in Paris

› World premiere: new small car will be a star of the Mondial de l’Automobile
› Simply more car: emotionally-rich design, innovative technology, top features
› Technology from higher vehicle classes: excellent in terms of safety, environment and comfort
› Typical ŠKODA: largest boot in its segment and many ‘Simply Clever’ features
› ŠKODA’s presence at the exhibition in Paris on 1.625 m2 floor space in pavilion 4

Mladá Boleslav, 24 September 2014 – Raise the curtain for the new ŠKODA Fabia: at the Paris Motor Show (02 to 19 October 2014), the newly developed small car from Mladá Boleslav celebrates a double world premiere: as a hatchback and an estate. Modern, dynamic and full of emotion, the new ŠKODA Fabia rolls onto the catwalk. The third-generation model also comes with innovative safety, comfort and infotainment systems that are usually featured in higher vehicle classes, and is more environmentally friendly than ever before. The boot boasts an impressive 330 litre capacity, making it the biggest within its segment. The new ŠKODA Fabia will be available in Europe as early as November; the Fabia Combi will follow in early 2015. With this double hit, the Czech manufacturer is powerfully advancing the biggest model campaign of its company history.

After the ŠKODA Octavia, the ŠKODA Fabia is the bestselling ŠKODA model with a total of almost 3.5 million units sold since 1999. Its outstanding qualities make it one of the most popular vehicles of its class. With the completely new third generation, the ‘crisp’ small car again sets standards. “The new ŠKODA Fabia is, in every respect, simply more car and offers both innovative technology and emotionally-charged design,” says ŠKODA CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. “A great car for heart and mind, ideal for the modern, urban mobility of today. We are very confident that the new Fabia will write another chapter in the model’s success story, win over new customer groups and, as an important pillar of our growth strategy, further strengthen the brand’s shine within international markets,” says Prof. Vahland.

The new ŠKODA Fabia is the first ŠKODA production model showing how the brand’s design language has developed into a more expressive, more emotionally-rich design. For the first time, ŠKODA designers have realised design elements from the spectacular ‘VisionC’ show car in series production. At the same time, elements from ŠKODA Motorsport can also be seen. The significantly sharpened appearance of the hatchback and the estate versions emphasises crystalline shapes, clear-cut lines and a high level of precision and detail. The Fabia and Fabia Combi feature balanced, smoother proportions and are 90 mm wider and 31 mm lower than their predecessors. In addition, they impress with a wide range of customisable features – both for the exterior and the interior.

Small car – big on technology. For the first time at ŠKODA, the new Fabia allows smartphones to be easily paired to the car via MirrorLink™ technology and with the new SmartGate function. ŠKODA are bringing the intelligence of the smartphone into the car – easily and at a reasonable price. Thanks to new engines (four petrol and three diesel), a targeted weight reduction – down to 980 kg at its leanest – and improved aerodynamics, consumption and emission values of the new ŠKODA Fabia are up to 17 per cent lower. The most efficient ŠKODA Fabia will be available in 2015: the 55 kW (75 PS) 1.4 TDI ŠKODA Fabia GreenLine. It has a diesel consumption of only 3.1 l/100km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of just 82 g/km.

The new ŠKODA Fabia also has innovative safety and comfort systems that were more likely to be seen in higher vehicle classes. Available for the first time in a Fabia is the Front Assistant with integrated City Emergency Braking Function and the Multi-Collision Brake. The Front Assistant uses a radar sensor to continually measure the distance to the traffic ahead. Whenever the distance is too small, the Assistant intervenes at the necessary intensity level in order to prevent a collision – from optical and acoustic warnings to a short brake jolt and automatic emergency stop. The Multi-Collision Brake reduces the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a subsequent collision following an accident. The system automatically engages the brakes if it detects a primary collision.

The new Fabia also has other safety systems: Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue detection), Speedlimiter, Hill-Hold Control and an electronic tyre pressure monitor. For increased comfort, optional features include KESSY (Keyless Entry Start and exit SYstem), front and rear parking sensors, the new electro-mechanical power steering and a large panoramic glass roof. At the same time, the new Fabia impresses with plenty of space, even more functionality and 19 ‘Simply Clever’ features.
