ŠKODA VISION E:
A look into the future – the first electrically powered ŠKODA concept car
› First fully electrically driven concept car in ŠKODA’s history
› Two electric motors with a total power output of 225 kW
› Top speed of up to 180 km/h
› Range of up to 500 km
› Autonomous driving possible
› Modern ŠKODA design language with crystalline design details is continued
Mladá Boleslav / Shanghai, 18 April 2017 – At the 2017 Auto Shanghai exhibition (19-28 April 2017), ŠKODA presents the first purely electrically powered concept car, the ŠKODA VISION E, and provides a look into the company’s future. The VISION E is based on the Group’s new MEB (modular electrification toolkit) and can also drive completely autonomously. The futuristic design incorporates unmistakable features of the ŠKODA design language. The most eye-catching details are the slim lighting strips in a crystalline look, the pronounced bonnet, the sculptured surfaces and the sacrifice of the Bpillars. The generous amount of space, state-of-the-art assistance systems as well as numerous ‘Simply Clever’ features are typical of ŠKODA. Thanks to a total power output of 225 kW, which is generated by the two electric motors on the front and rear axles, the ŠKODA VISION E accelerates particularly smoothly and also extremely dynamically up to its top speed of 180 km/h. The powerful lithium-ion batteries and intelligent brake energy recovery enable a range of up to 500 km.
Design
With a length of 4,688 mm, a width of 1,924 mm and a height of 1.591 mm, the ŠKODA VISION E exudes great presence. Due to the long wheelbase – 2.851 mm – and the short front and rear overhangs, the engineers were able to create a very generous and comfortable interior, typical of ŠKODA. The future-oriented car combines an SUV-style raised seating position and a hatchback’s generous amount of space with a dynamic silhouette and a gently sloping roofline, in the style of a coupé.
“Over the last few years, with our ŠKODA design language, we have produced several sensational concept cars that point the way to the brand’s future,” said Karl Neuhold, Head of Exterior Design at ŠKODA. “The new ŠKODA VISION E is now presenting the next step towards a future-oriented design.”
The modern ŠKODA design wows with harmonious proportions, neatly moulded surfaces, precise lines and clean-cut edges. Equally characteristic are the powerful contours, which set the stage for a sensational interplay between light and shade that conveys dynamism and emotiveness. With their 3D design, the crystalline structures of the headlights, tail lights and other features dominate the sophisticated character that is defined by modern technology and a particular refinement. The design is an expression of the timeless elegance and modern functionality that is typical of ŠKODA cars.
“Czech crystal glass art, which enjoys high international prestige and has a long tradition, is an important source of inspiration for the modern ŠKODA design. It combines classic manufacturing processes with modern aesthetics. The ŠKODA VISION E is therefore also a reference to cultural heritage in the brand’s homeland,” said Karl Neuhold, ŠKODA Head of Exterior Design. The ability to produce high-quality, emotive works of art from simple, precise shapes is consistent with the fundamental values of the Czech car brand, whose vehicles harmoniously combine aesthetics and functionality.
ŠKODA’s brand-typical design language and its further development have already been implemented in several concept cars: first in 2011 with the ŠKODA VISION D and subsequently with the ŠKODA VISION C (2014) and ŠKODA VISION S (2016). The design language’s continuous development is also reflected in the brand’s latest new models and has now been elevated to a new level with the ŠKODA VISION E.
Exterior
The front section of the ŠKODA VISION E is characterised by the striking design of the bonnet, which is sculptured and features edges running towards the centrally placed brand logo that shines in white. Below the bonnet, a wide LED lighting strip runs across the vehicle’s entire width and flows at both ends into slim, triangular headlights. All lighting units at the front and sides are in white. As with other electrically powered cars, there is no classic radiator grille. Instead, below the wide lighting strip, the bonnet extends to the lower air intakes.
The ŠKODA VISION E’s headlights feature Matrix LED technology that ensures a particular comprehensive road illumination which is always adapted to the individual driving situation. The highly efficient LED headlights produce a dipped and high beam which are not only directed very precisely onto the space in front of the car but also remarkably evenly. Due to innovative control technology, the adaptive light distribution reaches an additional level of quality. The single diodes are controlled together with the lenses and reflectors for targeted illumination of individual road areas whilst other areas are left out. Lighting control is connected to a front camera to analyse the individual traffic situation which includes recognising preceding and oncoming cars in good time. The data that this records allows for precise definition of the light distribution at all times. This again enables optimum use of the headlights’ range when driving with high beam whilst eliminating a blinding effect for oncoming road users at the same time.
Another, slim LED lighting strip runs below the air intakes and extends across the entire vehicle width. Below this sits the front spoiler, completing the front section. The combination of classic ŠKODA design details and new features lends the ŠKODA VISION E an extremely compact, robust and dynamic appearance.
The side view is characterised by the sharp incline of the windscreen, and the roofline, which begins to gently slope towards the rear at an early stage. This design accentuates the coupé-style appearance. There is neither a classic B-pillar nor are there the typical wing mirrors. The rear-hinged rear doors, which are operated electrically, make getting in and out of the car extremely comfortable. The tailgate is also electric. There are no wing mirrors but rather cameras that transfer what is happening around the vehicle onto interior displays and continuously keep the driver informed. This solution improves the vehicle’s aerodynamics and the functions previously associated with the wing mirrors (e.g. recognition of vehicles).
The bold tornado line, which rises towards the rear, runs from the headlights to the tail lights and creates an exciting interplay of light and shade on the body’s surfaces. Below the tornado line, a further LED lighting strip runs through the vehicle’s front half. It is tapered towards the body’s centre and therefore underlines the wedge shape, as well as giving the side view additional contour.
The shape of the lower side sills is rugged and bold. On the wings, there are large air vents at the level of the A-pillar. Large wheels and alloy rims in a futuristic design underline the concept car’s character. The unmistakably long wheelbase hints at the generously sized interior.
The rear section also combines sculptural design and crystalline shapes. At the bottom end of the large and sharply inclined rear window, the tornado lines seamlessly flow into a flush tailgate spoiler. The triangular tail lights with their multifaceted glass are wider towards the outer edge and extend far into the rear side section. Shining in white, the ŠKODA brand logo sits centrally between the tail lights.
With the ŠKODA VISION E, all of the tail light functions feature advanced LED technology. The LED light sources are particularly energy efficient and produce a high contrast effect. This leads to particularly harmonious and expressive signalling of all relevant lighting functions such as tail light, brake light and indicator.
There is a further strongly contoured line below the lighting units which takes up and continues a corresponding line on the side. The strong moulding of the line and the tailgate spoiler create a concave surface area which incorporates the tail lights and the brand logo which shines in white. A further LED lighting strip runs below the rear line and a black apron rounds off the rear section’s bottom part. As with all fully electrically powered vehicles, there is neither an exhaust system nor tailpipes.
The distinct horizontal lines and the dynamic wedge shape give the ŠKODA VISION E a particularly sporty appearance, even when stationary. The combination of design elements and classic ŠKODA features makes the ŠKODA VISION E an attractive representative of the Czech car manufacturer’s evolved design language.
Interior
Thanks to the large glass surfaces, the interior is light and transparent. The concept of horizontal lines is continued consistently and underlines the interior’s clear-cut structure and generous amount of space. Four individual, body-contoured seats with new backrests emphasise the car’s modernity.
The seats are slightly raised, thereby providing great visual clarity. In addition, the seats can be rotated by up to 20 degrees. They turn towards the outside when the doors are opened which makes getting in easier. After closing the door, they return to their initial position. In doing so, the concept car introduces a new ‘Simply Clever’ feature which ensures additional comfort through ergonomically optimised design and mechanics. Due to the ŠKODA VISION E’s concept, there is no need for a transmission tunnel in the front or rear, which creates a generous feeling of spaciousness.
The ŠKODA VISION E features a cockpit screen for the display of conventional vehicle data and there is also a head-up display for the driver and further displays for the passengers. The central touchscreen sits in the middle of the dashboard, so that the driver and front passenger can operate and read all of the important functions and services such as those provided by ŠKODA Connect.
In addition, there are individual displays for the front and rear passengers to allow for the operation of numerous comfort functions such as information and entertainment. The front passenger display is integrated into the dashboard whilst the displays for the rear passengers are in the front seats’ backrests. Furthermore, the front and rear passengers can control their individual entertainment program using their own touch displays. The front passenger’s control unit is incorporated into the right armrest; the rear passengers’ control unit is located between the two rear seats.
A Phonebox is built into the inside of each door, allowing inductive charging of the occupants’ smartphones. The smartphone’s personal settings, data and information can be accessed via the individual displays. Ambient lighting is integrated into the doors’ decorative strips and below the dashboard. It can be set to one of ten colours and can therefore be adjusted to the individual mood.
As soon as the vehicle drives autonomously, you can slide the front seats back and enjoy guaranteed maximum relaxation. At the same time, the steering wheel is raised, which means the largest possible amount of space and a corresponding degree of comfort.
Drive technology
The ŠKODA VISION E is a fully electrically driven concept car based on the Group’s MEB (modular electrification toolkit). Thanks to its power output of 225 kW generated by the two electric motors, the ŠKODA VISION E accelerates instantly and extremely dynamically.
“Typical of electric motors, the characteristics include maximum torque available from a standing start, which results in very good responsive qualities. When accelerating, the concept car thereby achieves the highest level of dynamism ever experienced in a ŠKODA,” said Christian Strube, ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development. The ŠKODA VISION E’s top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h. The powerful lithium-ion batteries and intelligent brake energy recovery enable a range of up to 500 km.
Due to intelligent management, the two electric motors work together with maximum efficiency and permanently drive all four wheels of the ŠKODA VISION E. The intelligent all-wheel drive further enriches the purely electric driving experience. Front and rear wheels are driven as required based on the driver’s demands and the individual driving situation to ensure maximum levels of stability, safety and dynamism at all times.
The powerful, liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery is housed in the crash protection area deep in the chassis floor and centrally between front and rear axles. This positioning of the slimline high voltage storage unit also contributes to the favourable weight distribution between the front and rear axle as well as to the ŠKODA VISION E’s low centre of gravity.
Inductive charging
Intelligent charging is one of the numerous ‘Simply Clever’ features. It is done inductively, for example via a floor panel in the owner’s garage. Here, the vehicle is brought to a stop with the front axle above a floor panel which is approximately five centimetres high. This charging pad measures approximately 65 x 65 cm and is connected to the grid. Overnight, it completely recharges the vehicle’s batteries automatically using induction technology, i.e. the operation is completely contactless and does not require a charging station or cable reel. Quick charging is also possible – 80 per cent of battery capacity in only 30 minutes. Inductive energy transmission is possible with a maximum charging capacity of 11 kW.
The advantages of inductive charging are obvious. Once the relevant infrastructure has been established, electric car owners no longer need to worry about the battery’s charging level or the range. Besides the owner’s charging pad at home in the car port or garage, adequate facilities could be made available in private or public underground car parks and charge the vehicle’s battery for example during office hours, whilst visiting a doctor, watching a game in the stadium or doing the shopping. Thus, batteries could be recharged in several small steps over the course of a day.
Autonomous driving
With the ŠKODA VISION E concept car, the Czech car manufacturer not only provides an outlook on the fully electric and thereby emission-free future of mobility but also on the forms of automated and autonomous driving which can be realised very soon. Additional opportunities to relieve the driver are being created based on the assistance systems that are already available in ŠKODA production models today. The technology presented in the ŠKODA VISION E allows further driving tasks to be delegated to the vehicle.
Autonomous driving is divided into different levels. Level 1 describes assisted driving. Amongst others, the systems at this level include cruise control, which controls the speed and also the distance to the vehicle in front. At this level, the driver must always have their hands on the steering wheel and pay attention to the traffic. Another example are emergency brake assistance features which take over the braking but leave all other vehicle control tasks to the driver. The systems are often limited in their functionality. Some systems are for example only partly operational in adverse weather conditions or only work up to a certain speed.
Level 2 describes semi-autonomous driving. At this level, vehicles can autonomously drive straight on, stay in lane or control the distance to the vehicle ahead autonomously in predefined situations – for example on a motorway. In traffic jams, the vehicle can autonomously take over all of the driving, steering and braking. Here too, adverse weather conditions can lead to restrictions, when dirty sensors hamper the electronics for example.
Level 3 describes highly-autonomous driving. Level 3 vehicles can for example take over steering completely on motorways. Here, the systems control overtaking and evasive manoeuvres, accelerate, and apply the brakes. In dangerous situations, the driver is prompted to take over the steering wheel again within a defined time frame. From level 3, vehicles also communicate automatically with other vehicles and exchange information.
Level 4, fully autonomous driving, is expected to be achieved in a couple of years’ time. Most of the time, the vehicle will then move autonomously and master even complex situations on country roads and in urban traffic. The driver can occupy themselves with other things during the journey and does not need to have an eye on the surrounding traffic all the time. The vehicle is then also completely connected with its environment. At level 4, urban traffic is also controlled automatically, for example by switching traffic lights to green when a vehicle approaches junctions and no traffic from side roads is detected. The vehicles communicate with each other and notify each other of a change of lanes for example.
From level 5, vehicles are autonomous from the starting point to the final destination. This means: these driverless cars need neither steering wheel nor pedals.
ŠKODA VISION E and level 3
“The ŠKODA VISION E concept car achieves the requirements for level 3 of autonomous driving. It can operate independently in traffic jams, complete motorway journeys using autopilot, stay in lane or take evasive actions, overtake other vehicles, independently look for free parking spaces and drive in and out of parking spaces autonomously,” said Christian Strube, ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development. All of this is aided by various sensors with different ranges and various cameras that monitor the traffic situation.
Different levels of communication are also installed and tested. The ŠKODA VISION E is – like many ŠKODA production models today – connected to the driver’s smartphone or other mobile devices and communicates with them. However, car-to-car communication and car-to-infrastructure communication are also possible with the ŠKODA VISION E.
Driver assistance systems
The ŠKODA VISION E is equipped with numerous assistance systems which increase safety and comfort and are available for numerous current ŠKODA models. These include:
› Front Assist including City Emergency Brake function with Predictive Pedestrian Protection, Blind Spot Detect, which warns the driver about vehicles in their blind spot,
› Rear Traffic Alert, which safeguards when reversing out of parking spaces,
› Adaptive Cruise Control, which maintains the desired distance from the vehicle in front,
› Lane Assist, which prevents the car from unintentionally deviating from its lane,
› the fatigue detection system Driver Alert, which detects signs that the driver is becoming tired and prompts them to take a break,
› Travel Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition,
› Park Assist, which can automatically steer the car into parking spaces and can even take over manoeuvring out of parking spaces.
Furthermore, several additional innovative systems can be found on board the ŠKODA VISION E. These include:
› Traffic Jam Assist, which automatically accelerates or brakes,
› the autopilot for motorway driving, which steers, accelerates and brakes independently (provided that the motorway fulfils the conditions for autonomous driving),
› the car park autopilot, which automatically searches for and guides the car to free parking spaces,
› the Educated Parking function, which memorises and finds the driver’s preferred parking locations.
The Educated Parking system is important particularly in regard to the inductive charging of the high-voltage battery. The system’s distinctive feature is its ability to learn. The driver just has to complete a full parking manoeuvre twice in order to gather all of the information required for it to work. Subsequently, the system is able to independently find the exact parking location that is ideal for inductive charging and guide the car to it.
The VISION E features various laser and radar scanners around the vehicle. Long-distance laser scanners for monitoring the environment in autonomous driving operation, radar sensors for detecting vehicles and obstacles at mid-range distances as well as radar scanners for shorter distances. All of the sensors and scanners work together with the different assistance systems. The data is processed by an analysis and control unit with an extremely large amount of processing power.
Display and operating concept
The ŠKODA VISION E’s display and operating concept comprises new systems that optimise comfort and safety while driving. The innovative digital Human Machine Interface (HMI) system guarantees maximal flexibility when controlling numerous functions in the car. The infotainment, communication and navigation functions can be activated and controlled both with the help of a central button on the centre console and via the individual touchscreens.
In addition to this, the ŠKODA VISION E also features gesture control for selected functions. Defined hand movements performed by the driver in the area around the centre console are picked up and identified by a camera. This allows standardised instructions, such as adjusting the audio system’s volume or answering phone calls, to be given with simple hand and finger gestures, without the driver having to take their eyes off the road.
Furthermore, the concept car is equipped with a particularly advanced version of voice control. When selecting navigation destinations or infotainment programs for example, the driver can give instructions not only using predefined terms, but also by formulating them in full sentences. The system understands the context of these and implements them.
Other new features available in the concept car include the Eye Tracking function which constantly monitors the driver’s eye movements. Using this, the camera-based system is able to always display the information required by the driver at the right time and in a perfectly ergonomic position on one of the screens in the interior. For example, if the driver turns to the central in-car monitor to select their desired entertainment program, driving-related information and possible warning messages are also briefly displayed there. This enables the driver to see all the important information, which is normally shown on the head-up display, in front of them – even when they intermittently take their eyes off the road.
The Eye Tracking function can also be used to analyse how alert the driver is. When the driver’s concentration is waning, the Driver Fatigue Monitor is activated and prompts the driver to take a break. Another system that optimises safety and that is being introduced in the ŠKODA VISION E is the heart rate monitor, which constantly monitors the driver’s heart rate and warns them if it is at a dangerous level. Should a medical problem arise, the VISION E can use its automatic driving functions to steer the car onto the hard shoulder without the driver’s help and bring the car to a stop. In the event of an emergency (e.g. a heart attack), the system can call the emergency services.
Infotainment and ŠKODA Connect
Comprehensive connectivity between the car, driver and passengers provides an extremely comfortable and safe journey. All of the connectivity features available offer improved access to information, a wide range of entertainment and an even higher level of safety. Via the car network, all ŠKODA VISION E passengers can send data such as route suggestions or playlists to the driver and communicate with each other as they like.
The range of new connectivity features available extends to topics such as individual car preconditioning. Playlists, auxiliary heating and navigation destinations, for instance, can be programmed prior to the journey and the electric range can also be checked. A digital key on a smartphone, smartwatch or tablet can be used to open the car. The route planner can also suggest routes based on the driver’s preferences. Information about the weather and traffic are also customised.
The ŠKODA VISION E is equipped with the latest infotainment systems. All of the capacitive touchscreens come in a ŠKODA-typical glass design. Thanks to a superfast LTE module and the most cutting-edge navigation systems that come with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, which connects all of the occupants’ mobile devices, the occupants of the ŠKODA VISION E are ‘always online’.
The range of infotainment features is complemented by the ŠKODA mobile online services, which provide navigation, information, entertainment and assistance. Via the ŠKODA Connect portal, the customer can even configure services from their home computer as well as transfer destinations, routes and points of interest to the car.
Online Traffic Information transfers traffic flow on the selected route to the car in real time and suggests alternative routes in the event of a traffic jam. The services also provide tailored information on parking spaces, news and the weather.
Navigation in the ŠKODA VISION E uses photo-realistic map views, street views can be seen in the form of 360-degree panoramic images. Destinations are requested by text entry or voice control. If the driver is planning the route in advance from home, the ŠKODA Connect app informs them of the best time to set off.
The Care Connect services support the VISION E’s occupants in many situations. The data is transferred via a SIM card that is installed in the vehicle. If the restraint systems have been activated following an accident, the Emergency Call establishes a voice and data connection to a dedicated emergency call centre and transfers all of the relevant information. The Emergency Call can also be operated manually.
Using the Breakdown Call function, the driver can have technical questions answered or request assistance in the event of a breakdown. With the help of the Proactive Services feature, service appointments can be arranged with a dealership and vehicle-related data can be passed on to the garage. Numerous online services can be run via the ŠKODA Connect app on a smartphone and allow the status of the car, e.g. whether it is locked and whether the lights are on, to be checked remotely. The current range of the ŠKODA VISION E can also be accessed when away from the vehicle.

› SAIC and ŠKODA to invest over two billion euros in the coming years
› SUV campaign to further strengthen ŠKODA’s position in Chinese market
Mladá Boleslav/Shanghai, 19 April 2017 – ŠKODA is on the road to success in China. More than two million vehicles have been handed over to Chinese customers since the company’s market entry ten years ago. In 2016 the company achieved a new delivery record with 317,100 vehicles (+12.6%). In the coming years, ŠKODA will further strengthen its position in its most important individual market. To this end, the brand, alongside its joint venture partner SAIC Motor Corporation, will be investing more than two billion euros into the expansion of the model range. At the Shanghai Motor Show 2017 (19-28 April), ŠKODA will be highlighting the importance of the Chinese market with the world premiere of the concept study VISION E and the launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI.
“Since we entered the Chinese market ten years ago, ŠKODA has developed very positively on the Chinese automotive market. Today, more than a quarter of our total annual sales are delivered to customers in China,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “We will continue to accelerate along this growth path over the coming years by broadening our model range. The primary focus of our model campaign on the Chinese market is the expansion of our SUV range: With the ŠKODA KODIAQ, our currently largest SUV is being launched on the market and additional attractive models will follow shortly after. Our goal is to double our deliveries in China to over 600,000 units by 2020.”
ŠKODA was a pioneer in the Chinese automotive market. As early as 1936, the brand had five trade representatives in the region. In 2007, the Czech manufacturer returned to the Chinese market. At that time, ŠKODA began locally producing the OCTAVIA under the umbrella of SAIC Volkswagen. In close cooperation with the Chinese joint venture partner, China became the largest single market for ŠKODA in 2010. The first million vehicles had been delivered after 75 months, the second million cars in just 42.
As a bestseller, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA enjoys the greatest popularity. Among the two million vehicles delivered in China, there were almost 1,107,000 ŠKODA OCTAVIAs, more than 305,000 ŠKODA RAPIDs, nearly 268,000 ŠKODA SUPERBs, more than 251,000 ŠKODA FABIAs and around 69,000 ŠKODA YETIs. Today, the brand is one of the established volume producers in the People's Republic. A total of six ŠKODA series are sold in China: FABIA, RAPID, RAPID SPACEBACK, OCTAVIA, YETI and SUPERB. The launch of the first large SUV ŠKODA KODIAQ takes place on 19 April 2017.
2016 was the first year that ŠKODA sold more than 300,000 vehicles in China – a record for the brand. Compared to the previous year, ŠKODA grew by 12.6 percent to 317,100 vehicles (2015: 281,700 vehicles) in its strongest individual market.
ŠKODA will be presenting several highlights at Auto Shanghai, held from 19 to 28 April. The brand’s appearance at the motor show is mainly characterised by the change to e-mobility: The VISION E study provides the company’s first brand-specific outlook on the future of individual mobility. The emotive five-door SUV coupé can travel up to 500 kilometres purely on electric and achieves level 3 autonomous driving. Electromobility plays a central role in the company's global growth strategy. ŠKODA's first fully electric-powered series-produced vehicle will be launched in 2020. By 2025, the brand will have expanded its offer to include five purely electrically driven vehicles in various segments.
The market launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ is another highlight at the Auto Shanghai. Since its world premiere last September, both the Chinese media and customers have eagerly awaited the ŠKODA KODIAQ. The ŠKODA KODIAQ features all of the brand’s strengths: with a distinctive design and exceptional space, and with practical intelligence and innovative technologies that would otherwise only be found in higher vehicle classes. The market launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ marks the starting signal for the brand’s SUV campaign in China and will help ŠKODA to develop new dynamically growing market segments.
The premiere of ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI is another highlight at this year's Auto Shanghai. This model variant is being presented to the Chinese public for the first time.
ŠKODA allows Chinese customers’ specific requirements and preferences to be incorporated into the concept, design and equipment of newly developed models. With the SUV campaign, which starts with the launch of the KODIAQ, ŠKODA is transferring its expressive design to the SUV segment and underlines the brand's emotional power.
ŠKODA will continue to develop its position and presence in the Chinese market in the future. During the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the Czech Republic on March 30, 2016, Volkswagen, SAIC Motor Corporation Limited and ŠKODA AUTO signed a Memorandum of Understanding laying out investment plans of more than two billion euros over five years. The aim is to expand the current model series, for example, vehicles with alternative drives and several SUVs.

ŠKODA Museum Exclusive: Clay model of ŠKODA VISION E
› ŠKODA VISION E celebrates world premiere at Auto Shanghai (19 – 28 April)
› Manufacturer presents concept study at ŠKODA Museum from 21 April to 12 May
› Emotive SUV coupé gives outlook on future design language for electric cars
Mladá Boleslav, 21 April 2017 – The ŠKODA VISION E is celebrating its world premiere at Auto Shanghai. The exterior design of the brand’s first electro study can be seen at the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav from 21 April to 12 May. The painted clay model with its futuristic design shows the features of ŠKODA’s new design language for future electric vehicles. Thanks to state-of-the-art virtual reality technology, visitors to the museum can experience the dynamic SUV Coupé in even more detail.
ŠKODA is displaying the design template of the concept study VISION E, which is celebrating its world premiere at Auto Shanghai at the same time, exclusively at the company-owned museum in Mladá Boleslav. The painted clay model was built at ŠKODA DESIGN and gives an outlook on the design language of the brand’s future electric vehicles. The emotive five-door coupé features eye-catching car body details, such as counter-opening doors and missing B-pillar. In the light-flooded interior, the four rotatable individual seats are slightly elevated, guaranteeing a good view and maximum comfort during autonomous driving as well as getting in and out. The electro study lacks a middle tunnel, which creates a particularly generous sense of space. Another highlight: visitors are immersed in virtual reality at the ŠKODA Museum. Thanks to virtual reality technology, they can explore the ŠKODA VISION E in the digital world and customise the interior of the future-oriented study according to their wishes.
The ŠKODA VISION E is the first purely electrically driven and autonomous concept car in the company's history. Thanks to intelligent management, the two electric motors interact with maximum efficiency and drive the ŠKODA VISION E over all four wheels. The powerful lithium-ion battery and optimal recuperation enable a range of up to 500 kilometres. At the same time, the concept car is equipped with various sensors and cameras to fulfil the prerequisites for level 3 autonomous driving. It drives independently in traffic jams, can cover great distances on motorways, as well as find and drive into and out of parking spaces.
The ŠKODA VISION E is the first step towards the electrification of ŠKODA’s model range, which will be launched in 2019 with the introduction of the ŠKODA SUPERB with plug-in hybrid drive. In the following year, the brand’s first purely electrically driven series model will follow. ŠKODA will be expanding its offer to include five purely electric cars in various segments by 2025.
The ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav displays many milestones in the 122-year history of the company. At the same time, the modern multifunctional building provides the perfect setting for many cultural, political and social events. The Mladá Boleslav museum hosted 242,000 visitors in 2016 – an increase of 16.4% compared to the previous year. In addition to the visitors from the home country the Czech Republic, international guests travel to the historic heart of the company, most from Germany, Denmark and Poland, while visitors from China, Australia and the USA also come to enjoy the ŠKODA experience.
For ŠKODA fans, the manufacturer offers other attractions at its headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. They can stroll through the former Laurin & Klement production halls, which recreate the company's early days. On display, there are rare prototypes demonstrating the high level of innovation that still characterises ŠKODA to this day. A factory tour of ŠKODA’s modern production halls provides the perfect contrast.
In addition to its own museum, ŠKODA maintains a close partnership with external cultural institutions. At Mladá Boleslav airport, the Metoděj-Vlach Aviation Museum houses a collection of 25 original aircraft as well as photographs and other impressive testimonies documenting aviation past and present. Ferdinand Porsche's birthplace in Reichenberg-Maffersdorf is also worth a visit. ŠKODA offers a range of discounts for all the mentioned cultural centres.

ŠKODA produces one million SUPERBs and 250,000 of the third generation
› One millionth ŠKODA SUPERB manufactured at Kvasiny
› 250,000 of the current third generation produced worldwide
› Tradition of the brand’s flagship dates back to 1930s
Mladá Boleslav, 27 April 2017 – ŠKODA has produced the one millionth SUPERB. The milestone vehicle, a top-of-the-range Laurin & Klement saloon, left the production line at ŠKODA’s Kvasiny plant in the Czech Republic. The current third generation has made a major contribution to this success: since the market launch in March 2015, ŠKODA has produced 250,000 vehicles of this top model. The brand’s flagship brings the success story of the series dating back to 1934 to a new level.
"This production milestone is an impressive demonstration of ŠKODA's high production competence and its employees," says Michael Oeljeklaus, Board Member for Production and Logistics, adding “The name SUPERB represents one of the best and most successful cars in the automotive mid-class.”
The third-generation ŠKODA SUPERB has led the brand into a new era since its production launch in March 2015. With its sharp lines, state-of-the-art assistance systems for safety and comfort, powerful yet economical engines, largest interior space in the segment and numerous 'Simply Clever' details, the current generation has successfully established itself in the mid-class.
For its exceptional qualities, the ŠKODA SUPERB has been awarded the ‘Red Dot Award’ for outstanding product design and the title ‘Car of the Year’ in numerous European countries. The production figures also underscore the success of the brand's flagship: After producing 136,100 vehicles of the first generation, which was launched in 2001, the production figures of the second generation increased significantly. Between 2008 and 2015, 618,500 ŠKODA SUPERBs left the ŠKODA plant in Kvasiny. The current third generation was launched in March 2015. In just the two years since, ŠKODA has produced 250,000 vehicles. The modern flagship is celebrating an impressive milestone and raising the popularity of the series to a new level.
ŠKODA’s top model has been synonymous with high quality from the Czech Republic on the global markets since 2001. The carmaker builds on the tradition of large, prestigious vehicles from Mladá Boleslav that date back to the early 20th century. In 1907 the Laurin & Klement FF became the first eight-cylinder model in Central Europe. In the 1920s, the luxurious ŠKODA Hispano-Suiza mobilised the first state president of Czechoslovakia. The inspirational eight-cylinder ŠKODA 860 was released in the early 1930s.
The ŠKODA 640 SUPERB followed in 1934. Since then, the sonorous name has represented the brand’s particularly high-class cars. The term comes from the Latin word 'superbus', meaning ‘distinguished’, ‘excellent or ‘magnificent.’ Just as the current generation, the predecessors also featured pioneering technology. The 640 SUPERB used the technological platform of the POPULAR; its 2.5-litre six-cylinder had an output of 55 hp. The Cardan shaft ran through the tube frame. Also, advanced independent suspension was utilised instead of rigid axles front and rear. An advantage of this design was, for example, that the stress on the body was reduced due to significantly higher torsional rigidity. This model is a rarity with only 200 ever built.
ŠKODA SUPERB – in 2001 the new model was launched in the mid-class
In 2001 ŠKODA gave the evocative name a new lease of life. The new flagship of the brand immediately set new standards in the mid-class: no competing model in the segment offered as much space as the new model of the brand from Mladá Boleslav. At the same time, the SUPERB scored points with an attractive design and state-of-the-art technology. A navigation system, GSM telephone preparation, heated seats, xenon headlights, parking sensors and sunroofs were added to the high comfort on request. As standard, modern systems such as ABS, ESC and six airbags ensured maximum safety.
The second generation of the modern ŠKODA SUPERB celebrated its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show of 2008. The impressive new model had even more space, an elegant appearance and build quality of the highest level. In addition, the SUPERB was available for the first time with all-wheel drive. The particularly practical ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI followed in 2009.
SUPERB III is the first ŠKODA model to offer comprehensive connectivity
In 2015 ŠKODA heralded a new era with the current third generation SUPERB. Never before had such high demands been put on the design of a ŠKODA car. Never had so many new technologies gone into the development of a model. Never before had there been so many new ‘Simply Clever’ ideas, and never had ŠKODA engineers created so much room for drivers, passengers and their luggage. An array of assistance systems from higher vehicle classes ensures greater safety and comfort. The new EU-6 engines are also more powerful than previously, whilst also being up to 30 percent more economical.
At the same time, the SUPERB, introduced in 2015, was the brand’s first model to support full connectivity. The modern infotainment system can be automatically connected to Smartphones via SmartLink. SmartLink includes the standards MirrorLinkTM, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system allows users to operate many apps from their smartphone on the car’s display. In addition, the driver can use the SmartGate function to retrieve vehicle data on their device. The SUPERB was also the first ŠKODA hotspot on wheels with high-speed Internet access. Another highlight is the innovative and particularly practical Phonebox, which charges mobile phones wirelessly.
The experience and passion of 122 years of ŠKODA vehicle construction went into the development of the third generation model. The SUPERB impressively demonstrates the company's engineering and design competence.

New compact SUV is called ŠKODA KAROQ
› Name and spelling have been derived from the language of Alaska’s indigenous people
› The name KAROQ is a combination of the terms ‘KAA’RAQ’ (car) and ‘RUQ’ (arrow)
› With the KAROQ, ŠKODA is consistently advancing its SUV campaign
› World premiere of the new compact SUV will take place in Stockholm on 18 May
Mladá Boleslav, 28 April 2017 – ŠKODA’s new compact SUV is called the KAROQ. The name and its spelling originate from the language of the Alutiiq, an indigenous tribe who live on an island off the southern coast of Alaska. For the name of the new compact SUV, ŠKODA has drawn on the spelling of the ŠKODA KODIAQ and in doing so, has created a consistent nomenclature for the brand’s current and future SUV models. The ŠKODA KAROQ will be introduced to the public for the first time in Stockholm on 18 May and represents a further milestone in ŠKODA’s SUV campaign.
“The ŠKODA KAROQ is a completely newly designed SUV that sets new benchmarks for our brand and its segment in every way. With this new SUV, we are taking the next logical step in our SUV strategy,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “The ŠKODA KAROQ impresses with its unique brand identity and a distinctive product identity and is introducing – alongside the typical ŠKODA strengths – the brand’s new, emotive design language into the compact SUV segment,” adds Maier.
As before with the ŠKODA KODIAQ, the people from Kodiak Island provided the inspiration for the name of the ŠKODA KAROQ. The coordinates of the remote archipelago off the southern coast of Alaska are 57°N and 153°W, and its untamed, unspoilt landscape is fascinating. In the language of the indigenous people from the Alutiiq tribe who live there, ‘car’ is ‘KAA’RAQ’. They use the term ‘RUQ’ for ‘arrow’, the symbol that constitutes the central element of ŠKODA’s logo and represents the brand’s dynamism. In the end, the name for ŠKODA’s new compact SUV – the ŠKODA KAROQ – was formed from the powerful combination of both words.
“It is important to us to give our new SUV a powerful name. It also forms part of a naming approach across our SUV models,” said Werner Eichhorn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “At the same time, we are creating exceptional and memorable brand recognition value for our customers,” continued Eichhorn.
As part of ŠKODA’s 2025 future strategy, the brand will continue to consistently advance the expansion of its model range in the coming years. The focus will be on expanding the SUV portfolio in particular. With the launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ, a new large SUV was introduced to the international markets only recently. With the introduction of the ŠKODA KAROQ, the company is now setting the next milestone. The new compact SUV will be celebrating its world premiere on 18 May in Stockholm. Its market launch will follow in the second half of 2017.

ŠKODA produces 1.5-millionth third-generation OCTAVIA
› Milestone vehicle rolls off the production line at the main plant in Mladá Boleslav
› More than five million customers have opted for the ‘heart of the brand’ since 1996
› The ŠKODA OCTAVIA is one of the most successful model lines in the automotive world
Mladá Boleslav, 2 May 2017 – The ‘heart of ŠKODA’ has reached a special milestone: the car manufacturer’s employees at the main plant in Mladá Boleslav have produced the 1.5-millionth third-generation OCTAVIA. The comprehensively upgraded new version of the bestseller has continued the model range’s success story since the beginning of February. It impresses with redesigned front and rear sections as well as state-of-the-art solutions in terms of driver assistance systems, infotainment and connectivity. Since the first modern OCTAVIA generation was launched 21 years ago, over five million customers around the world have chosen the compact model from the long-established Czech brand. This makes the OCTAVIA model range one of the most successful in the automotive world.
“With the OCTAVIA, the rapid development of our company really gathered pace from 1996,” said Michael Oeljeklaus, Board Member for Production and Logistics. “It has been an important pillar of the ŠKODA portfolio for over two decades. With the third generation of our bestseller, we have seamlessly built on the success story of the first two editions. Much of the credit for the success of the OCTAVIA and the ŠKODA brand goes to our motivated and highly skilled workforce, which now has 1.5 million reasons to be proud of its achievements,” added Oeljeklaus.
With more than five million units sold, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA is the Czech car manufacturer’s bestselling model. The first generation alone, which rolled off the production line from 1996 until the end of November 2010, won over more than 1.4 million buyers. The second-generation OCTAVIA continued the success of its predecessor: between 2004 and 2013, ŠKODA sold a total of 2.5 million vehicles. The third generation of the OCTAVIA, which is considered to be the cornerstone of ŠKODA’s model range, has been in production since November 2012; its one millionth vehicle left the production halls in Mladá Boleslav at the end of March 2016. In total, almost 1.4 million vehicles from the third generation were produced by the end of 2016. Production of the comprehensively upgraded OCTAVIA commenced at the beginning of February 2017. ŠKODA makes the compact model at its main plant in the Czech Republic as well as in China, India, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
ŠKODA offers the comprehensively upgraded third-generation OCTAVIA as a hatchback and an estate. With its redesigned front and rear sections, streamlined body and wider track, it comes across as even more dynamic than before. The new version of the compact model impresses with proven strengths and sets new standards in its segment in terms of the amount of interior space, functionality, technology for safety as well as comfort, and value for money. Customers have a choice of four trim levels: Active, Ambition, Style and L&K. Furthermore, they can also choose Scout and RS versions. The engine portfolio comprises state-of-the-art petrol and diesel units with power outputs ranging from 63 kW (86 PS) to 180 kW (245 PS). Depending on the engine version, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA is also available with advanced direct-shift transmission (DSG) and all-wheel drive.

Vintage cars & Alpine scenes: ŠKODA sends two cult cars to the Bodensee Klassik
› At the start: ŠKODA FELICIA convertible and ŠKODA 440 SPARTAK
› Bodensee Klassik: three countries, 180 teams driving over 600 kilometres
› ŠKODA’s authentic appearance: with contemporary rally kit and wind in the hair
Mladá Boleslav, 3 May 2017 – At the sixth Bodensee Klassik, which takes place from 4 to 6 May, ŠKODA will be participating with two selected classics from the late 1950s. The ŠKODA 440 SPARTAK from 1957 and the convertible ŠKODA FELICIA from 1961 will be tackling the 600-kilometre route through Austria, Germany and Switzerland during this spring’s three-country rally. Both vehicles come from the ŠKODA Museum at the brand’s headquarters in the Czech town of Mladá Boleslav. The start and destination of the tour is the Austrian festival town of Bregenz at Lake Constance.
The vehicles of the traditional Czech brand have been at home on the challenging routes in the foothills of the Alps for more than 110 years: It was during the pioneering days of the automobile that the modern constructions from Mladá Boleslav were taking part in rallies, bringing home hill-climb victories, whilst the attractive series models were establishing themselves on the Austrian, German and Swiss markets. The place where these three countries meet has been the home of the prestigious Bodensee Klassik for the last six years. This year, the rally will be held over three days, where the participants will be travelling along beautiful routes through southern Germany, the Austrian state of Vorarlberg and the Swiss Appenzell region. The contrasting scenery is particularly appealing: The historical vehicles will be going head to head from the backdrop of the spectacular Lake Constance up to the very high mountain passages.
ŠKODA is meeting this challenge with two particularly popular classics: an open-top FELICIA from 1961 and the legendary two-door ŠKODA 440, nicknamed 'SPARTAK' dating back to 1957. Both vehicles have already taken part in many vintage car rallies on European and Asian roads.
The ŠKODA 440 SPARTAK, the direct predecessor of the OCTAVIA series built between 1959 and 1971, was manufactured in 1957 and delivered to a customer in the northern Bohemia of Ústí nad Labem. In 1995 the vehicle was purchased by the ŠKODA Museum, where it has been faithfully restored: The SPARTAK was rebuilt to the exact specifications as the ŠKODA factory team used in Czech and international rallies at the end of the 1950s. In the series-production version, the engine produced an output of 40 hp (29.4 kW) with a displacement of 1,089 cc, accelerating the two-door saloon to 110 km/h.
The turquoise ŠKODA FELICIA from 1961 is one of ŠKODA’s great success stories: Between 1959 and 1964, almost 15,000 customers opted for one the chic convertibles of the FELICIA or FELICIA SUPER series – the latter having a slightly more powerful engine. The two-seaters are among the most beautiful open-top vehicles of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The models’ special features include the characteristic tail fins, which optically lengthen the rear and effectively round off the proportions of the approximately four-meter-long vehicle. The FELICIA is based technically on the 440 but achieves a higher output of 50 hp (36.8 kW) thanks to dual carburettors. Also, due to a low weight of 930 kilogrammes, the convertible reaches a top speed of 130 km/h. The ŠKODA Museum acquired the FELICIA starting at Bodensee from private ownership in 1995. After restoration, it became a true crowd pleaser at ŠKODA’s booth at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt 1998, where it drew the attention of the audience alongside the brand’s contemporary models.
The Bodensee Klassik is being held for the sixth time this year and is open to vintage and modern classics built before 1997. Thanks to the picturesque landscapes, excellent organisation and high-quality participants, the tour is one of the most popular classic car events in the first half of the season. Along the route of more than 600 kilometres, the teams will experience the full range of steep mountain passes with countless bends over breath-taking descents in picturesque valleys that often present the temptation to pick up the pace.
The first of the 180 registered vehicles will start in the Vorarlberg metropolis Bregenz on Thursday, 4 May at 2 pm. Two days later, the vintage and modern classics will cross the finish line in the same place on Saturday afternoon.

ŠKODA’s sales revenue, deliveries and operating profit increase
› ŠKODA achieves best first quarter in company’s history
› Sales revenue increases by 28.3% to 4.3 billion euros compared to same period last year
› Operating profit increases by 31.7% to 415 million euros
› ŠKODA delivers 283,500 vehicles (+ 2.5%) in first three months of 2017
› Bernhard Maier: “ŠKODA was doing well during the first three months of the year and is on a stable growth path. However, the 2017 automotive year remains challenging.”
Mladá Boleslav, 4 May 2017 – ŠKODA is highlighting its path to growth with the best first quarter in the company’s 122-year history. Never before has the traditional Czech brand achieved such strong results in sales revenue, deliveries and operating profit between January and March. The manufacturer delivered 283,500 vehicles (+ 2.5%) worldwide. Sales revenue increased by 28.3% to 4.3 billion euros in the same period, while ŠKODA’s operating profit increased by 31.7% to 415 million euros.
“ŠKODA was doing well during the first three months of the year and is on a stable growth path. However, the 2017 automotive year remains challenging; the volatile developments in some markets and the harsh competitive environment require careful attention,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier, adding: “With our Strategy 2025, we are preparing the company for the social and technological changes facing the automotive industry. The recently presented electric study VISION E provides an outlook on how ŠKODA is actively shaping the individual mobility of tomorrow.”

“Despite a challenging market environment and high volatility in exchange rates, ŠKODA achieved desirable results in the first quarter. The higher profitability is mainly attributable to positive volume, mix and exchange-rate effects,” says ŠKODA CFO Klaus-Dieter Schürmann. “We continue to operate from a position of financial strength. In light of the sometimes unpredictable developments in some regions of the world, it is more important than ever to work very cost-effectively.”
In terms of model series, the brand's flagship, the ŠKODA SUPERB, the small car FABIA and the compact RAPID achieved above-average growth rates. From January to March the SUPERB increased by 18.9% to 38,300 deliveries compared to the same quarter last year. The FABIA also posted strong growth in the first quarter (54,600 vehicles, + 10.2%). The RAPID developed positively with sales of 51,800 vehicles (+ 6.8%) in the first quarter of 2017.
With Strategy 2025, ŠKODA is consistently driving the growth of the brand, while simultaneously preparing for the technological and social changes facing the international automotive industry. Key elements of the strategy include expanding the SUV model range, the electrification of ŠKODA’s model range, the brand’s further internationalisation, and developing new integrated digital mobility solutions.

The dynamic ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK – compact on the outside, huge on the inside
› Main headlights with energy-efficient bi-xenon lights, daytime running lights and indicators with LED technology
› Compact hatch with lots of space, a high degree of functionality and ‘Simply Clever’ ideas
› Vast panoramic glass roof and longer rear window
› Engines ranging from 66 kW (90 PS) to 92 kW (125 PS), new 1.0 TSI with three cylinders – efficient, dynamic and sporty-sounding
› Assistance systems for the highest level of safety and comfort
› ‘Always online’ – infotainment systems open up new dimensions in terms of connectivity
The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK combines the practical advantages of all ŠKODA models with a compact hatch body. Its dynamic design increases its appeal to a younger target group. The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK impresses with strengths that are typical of the brand, namely generous interior space, numerous ‘Simply Clever’ ideas as well as a high level of both active and passive safety. From the Ambition trim level upwards, the main headlights feature LED daytime running lights. The optionally available bi-xenon headlights, are also combined with LED daytime running lights and indicators. The lengthened rear window now comes as standard for the Style trim level and achieves a distinct feeling of space, particularly with the optional panoramic glass roof. New dynamic and efficient three cylinder 1.0 TSI engines replace the units with a cylinder capacity of 1.2 l. The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK is also available in the sporty MONTE CARLO variant.
Distinct design makes for a dynamic appearance
The visual upgrade of the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK is particularly apparent when looking at the front. The modified fog lights in the redesigned lower section of the bumper are connected by a narrow chrome strip (as standard for Style), which makes the front section appear even wider. Five new wheel designs are available in a new design (optional). In addition, there are 13 paint finishes available, three of which are new colours and nine of which are metallic.
The front design of the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK comprises the characteristic elements of the ŠKODA RAPID hatchback. Apart from the striking radiator grille with its 19 vertical slats and chrome surround as well as the cloverleaf arrangement of the headlights and front fog lights, these also include the ŠKODA logo. The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK can also be ordered with front fog lights including cornering function in the Ambition and Style trim levels.
The longer rear window is also a distinctive feature top-of-the-range variant of the upgraded ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK. Black-tinted covers on the tail lights in the brand-typical ‘C’ shape lend the rear an even sportier appearance. The black diffuser element and the reflectors in the bumper emphasise the horizontal orientation.
In combination with the longer rear window (as standard for Style), the panoramic glass roof lends the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK a unique appearance. This sees the glass area stretch from the front window and glass roof deep into the tailgate, offering unobstructed views as well as a particular feeling of spaciousness for the occupants. The glass roof measures 1,713 x 1,155 mm with a transparent area measuring 1,210 x 780 mm.
The side view is shaped by the 2,602-mm-long wheelbase and the coupé-like silhouette with the sharp tornado line, which creates an interplay between light and shade on the body’s surfaces. In comparison to conventional hatchback models, the side view of the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK comes across as sportier and more elongated. A third side window between the C-pillar and the additional D-pillar improves all-around visibility in the blind spots. Together with the large window surfaces, the slimline roof beams also ensure a high degree of clarity, thereby lending the interior a bright ambience with plenty of light.
Compact on the outside, spacious on the inside – the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK sets the benchmark
Although the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK falls 18 cm short of the RAPID hatchback in terms of exterior length, it provides virtually the same incredible amount of interior space as its hatchback sister model. As a result, the SPACEBACK boasts segment-topping dimensions with 65 mm of kneeroom as well as front and rear headroom of 1,014 mm and 980 mm respectively. The boot space is also among the largest in this category with a capacity of 415 l, or 1,381 l with the rear seats folded down.
New light technology – intelligent and energy-efficient
From Ambition upwards, the main headlights are now available with energy-efficient bi-xenon lights as an option and the daytime running lights use LED technology as standard. When the driver indicates, the LED unit becomes an LED indicator. Light Assist rounds off the programme. This turns on the daytime running lights when the ignition is switched on. A sensor continuously assesses the light conditions and automatically switches the headlights on and off as required. This works in twilight as well as when driving through forests or tunnels. The lights are also turned on automatically as soon as the windscreen wipers are operated. The Coming Home and Leaving Home functions provide lighting for a predefined period of time. The vehicle’s surroundings are illuminated, allowing occupants to safely get into or out of the car.
The Light Assist feature High-beam Assist ensures optimum illumination of the road at all times. In darkness and when the speed exceeds 60 km/h, the sensor recognises vehicles ahead (at a distance of up to 400 m) as well as oncoming traffic (up to 1,000 m) and dips the beam when required.
The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK can also be ordered with front fog lights including cornering function in the trim levels Ambition and Style.
Comprehensive active and passive safety
The long wheelbase, a precise chassis and the rigid body structure form the basis for stable driving dynamics. The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK features a comprehensive range of safety systems. Standard equipment includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and continuous tyre pressure monitoring (in EU countries). Every ŠKODA RAPID now comes with Multi-Collision Brake as standard, which reduces the risk of multiple collisions in the event of an accident. Modern assistance systems such as the Driver Alert fatigue detection system and Front Assist, including City Emergency Brake function, are also available for the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK. Optional functions such as fog lights with cornering function or Hill-Hold Control increase the level of active safety. Front and rear parking sensors provide comfort and safety.
The passive safety systems protect the occupants in the event of a collision. They include six airbags as standard (front, side and curtain airbags) as well as height-adjustable three-point seat belts with tensioners in the front. The rigid body exhibits excellent deformation behaviour for the vehicle in the event of a collision.
Efficient and dynamic 1.0-litre TSI engines with three cylinders
The technology under the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK’s bonnet is also state-of-the-art: all engines feature fuel efficiency measures such as brake energy recovery and a Stop-Start function and fulfil the EU6 emissions standard. Depending on the engine variant, there is a choice of a 5-speed or a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 7-speed DSG transmission.
1.0-litre TSI engines are available for the upgraded ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK for the first time. The particularly agile and efficient three-cylinder engines are available in two power versions:
1.0 TSI, 70 kW (95 PS), top speed of 184 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 11.0 seconds, combined consumption of 4.4 l per 100 km, 101 g CO2/km. Transmission: choice of 5-speed manual or 7 speed DSG.
1.0 TSI, 81 kW (110 PS), top speed of 198 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 9.8 seconds, combined consumption of 4.5 l per 100 km, 104 g CO2/km. Transmission: 6-speed manual.
(All values given apply to the manual gearbox variant.)
Due to their compact construction and aluminium crankcase, they both now weigh ten kilograms less than the 1.2-litre engines they are replacing, and their running is particularly smooth and refined. The free inertial forces are low and the otherwise customary balancing shaft for three-cylinder engines is therefore not necessary. This saves on weight and helps to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Besides the two new three-cylinders, three more engines are available for the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK. There is a choice of:
1.4 TSI, 92 kW (125 PS), top speed of 205 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds, combined consumption of 4.8 l per 100 km, 113 g CO2/km. Transmission: 7-speed DSG.
1.4 TDI, 66 kW (90 PS), top speed of 183 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 11.6 seconds, combined consumption of 3.9 l per 100 km, 103 g CO2/km. Transmission: choice of 5-speed manual or 7 speed DSG.
1.6 TDI, 85 kW (116 PS), top speed of 198 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 9.9 seconds, combined consumption of 4.1 l per 100 km, 107 g CO2/km. Transmission: 5-speed manual.
(All values given apply to the TDI variant with a manual gearbox and the TSI variant which is coupled with DSG.)
The diesel engines operate with common-rail direct injection and a diesel particulate filter.
‘Always online’ with ŠKODA Connect
If they wish, the occupants in the upgraded ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK can be ‘always online’ using a Wi-Fi connection. The new ŠKODA Connect services consist of Infotainment Online for information and entertainment, and the Care Connect services for assistance and services. The Infotainment Online services include real-time Online Traffic Information, petrol stations (including up-to-date fuel prices), parking spaces, current news or the weather report.
The Care Connect services support the driver in many situations and are available for all trim levels with the Amundsen and Swing infotainment systems. The range includes the automatic Emergency Call, which connects to an emergency call centre when a restraint system has been deployed, the Breakdown Call and the Proactive Service with direct contact to the ŠKODA garage of choice to have questions answered or to arrange the next service.
Via the ŠKODA Connect app, the driver can, at any time, remotely access information about the car or check its condition on the smartphone. Furthermore, it is possible to send navigation destinations to the car. Those who struggle to remember where their car is parked can also have its current location displayed on their smartphone.
Comprehensive infotainment programme
The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK’s music and navigation systems are based on the second generation of the Modular Infotainment Matrix. Features such as the ŠKODA surround system, the Bluetooth hands-free system and USB ports are now available as standard or as an optional extra. The SmartLink+ smartphone interface – supporting the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink™ standards – allows the use of selected apps via the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK’s display. The Media Command 2.0 Rear Seat Entertainment system (available as an option from Ambition upwards) allows two tablets attached to the back of the front headrests to be connected to the infotainment system via the Wi-Fi hotspot. This enables navigational destinations to be transferred from the tablet’s address book and calendar as well as allowing the infotainment system to be controlled from the back seat.
‘Simply Clever’: two additional USB ports in the rear
The numerous ʽSimply Clever’ features make ŠKODA models particularly popular. The new features in the upgraded ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK include two USB ports in the rear, which can be used to charge smartphones or other small mobile devices.
In addition, there are 20 smart ‘Simply Clever’ features in the car (as standard or optional): an ice scraper in the fuel filler flap, a double-sided boot liner with a carpet and a rubber side, a high-vis-vest holder under the driver’s seat or an umbrella in a compartment under the passenger seat.
The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK’s boot distinguishes itself with an adjustable false floor, which allows the luggage compartment to be divided into two horizontal sections. The parcel shelf, which lowers vertically behind the rear seats, is also very practical.
Three trim levels and a MONTE CARLO variant available
The ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK is available in the Active, Ambition and Style trim levels and as a MONTE CARLO variant.
The lifestyle-oriented MONTE CARLO variant offers a sporty touch. Black design features emphasise its dynamic character both on the inside and the outside. Thanks to its longer rear window, the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK MONTE CARLO now has an even more attractive rear section. There is an almost unobstructed view of the sky through the panoramic glass roof which is fitted with a retractable sunblind and comes as standard. Bi-xenon headlights, a lit glove compartment and electrically adjustable, heated wing mirrors also come as standard.

ŠKODA RAPID – the family favourite
› New design for front and rear sections
› Redesigned interior with modified instrument cluster
› In typical ŠKODA style: generous space and a lot of car for your money
› Main headlights with energy-efficient bi-xenon lights, daytime running lights and indicators with LED technology
› A wealth of safety equipment and state-of-the-art assistance systems for increased safety and comfort
› Connectivity – in-car Wi-Fi ensures you are ‘always online’
› Efficient and sporty three-cylinder 1.0 TSI engines
› Three trim levels: Active, Ambition and Style, and a sporty MONTE CARLO variant
The ŠKODA RAPID has been further upgraded in terms of design and equipment. The interior space is still massive and remains outstanding amongst its competitors. The elegant ŠKODA RAPID offers many new technical features including new lighting and driver assistance systems, which ensure even more safety, and a new connectivity solution with ŠKODA Connect. This allows the occupants to be ‘always online’. Furthermore, the engine range with the new 1.0-TSI three-cylinder engines is now even more efficient.
Three trim levels and the sporty MONTE CARLO variant
The ŠKODA RAPID sits between the ŠKODA FABIA and the ŠKODA OCTAVIA in the compact car segment. This A-segment, as it is known, represents around 36 per cent of the global automotive market. Within this vehicle segment, hatchbacks make up 42 per cent. According to industry experts, the number of this type of car sold worldwide will increase by around 50 per cent by 2020. The ŠKODA RAPID is still one of the most attractive models in this segment and is available in the Active, Ambition and Style trim levels, as well as the particularly sporty variant, the Monte Carlo.
New design for front and rear sections
The ŠKODA RAPID sets the benchmark for spaciousness amongst its direct competitors. Compact exterior, huge interior. At the front, the latest upgrade is particularly clear in the bumper’s lower section where the fog lights come in a modified design. A refined chrome strip in the bumper’s lower section (standard for the Style trim level), which visually connects the two fog lights, is just one of the design elements that makes the front section appear even wider than before.
The tail lights, in the brand’s typical ‘C’ shape, now come with a tinted glass cover, which gives the ŠKODA RAPID’s rear section an even sportier look. Several new designs are available for the wheels and wheel trims.
Thanks to its coupé-style silhouette and long wheelbase, the side view of the ŠKODA RAPID conveys a lot of emotive qualities. A sharply cut tornado line creates a fascinating interplay between light and shade on the body’s surfaces. As usual, the boot can be loaded with ease thanks to its large, wide-opening tailgate.
The changes to the design continue in the interior. When getting into the car, the decorative inlays in the four doors are immediately noticeable. The air vents and the decorative strip in the dashboard (from the Ambition trim level upwards), the circular instruments and the control panel for the air conditioning and heating have also been redesigned.
Benchmark for spaciousness
With the ŠKODA RAPID, the Czech manufacturer is particularly focusing on families as its key target group. The car’s adaptability is a crucial competitive advantage, given its space and its large tailgate. The ŠKODA RAPID is extremely popular with families due to its compact external dimensions (4,483 mm long, 1,706 mm wide, 1,461 mm high) and its interior which is, in relation to these dimensions, particularly spacious. It offers a convenient and comfortable ride for up to five occupants. The headroom in the rear is a generous 972 mm, the kneeroom is 65 mm – figures, which are amongst the best when compared to the competition. With a capacity of 550 l, the boot volume also sets the benchmark amongst its competitors.
The intelligent Light Assist function
From Ambition upwards, the main headlights are now available with energy-efficient bi-xenon lights as an option and the daytime running lights use LED technology as standard. When the driver uses the indicator, the LED unit also performs this function. Light Assist completes the offering. This turns on the daytime running lights when the ignition is switched on. A sensor then continuously assesses the light conditions and automatically switches the headlights on and off as required.
In addition, High Beam Assist ensures optimum road illumination at all times. In darkness and when the speed exceeds 60 km/h, the sensor recognises vehicles ahead (at a distance of up to 400 m) as well as oncoming traffic (up to 1,000 m) and dips the beam when required.
As an optional extra, the ŠKODA RAPID can also be ordered with front fog lights including cornering function in the Ambition and Style trim levels.
Comprehensive active and passive safety
The long wheelbase, a precise chassis and the rigid body structure form the basis for stable driving dynamics. The ŠKODA RAPID features a comprehensive range of safety systems. Standard equipment includes Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and continuous tyre pressure monitoring (in EU countries). The Trailer Roll Stability feature is an extension of ESC. In addition, the ŠKODA RAPID now comes with Multi-Collision Brake as standard, which reduces the risk of multiple collisions in the event of an accident.
Modern assistance systems such as the fatigue detection system Driver Alert and Front Assist including City Emergency Brake function are also available for the ŠKODA RAPID. Optional functions such as fog lights with cornering function or Hill-Hold Control increase the level of active safety. Front and rear parking sensors provide comfort and safety. The passive safety systems protect the occupants in the event of a collision. They include as standard six front, side and head airbags as well as height-adjustable three-point seat belts with tensioners in the front. The rigid body exhibits excellent deformation behaviour for the vehicle in the event of a collision.
Efficient and dynamic 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI engines
Depending on the engine variant, there is a choice of a 5-speed or a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 7-speed DSG transmission. 1.0-litre TSI engines are available for the upgraded ŠKODA RAPID for the first time. The particularly agile and efficient three-cylinder engines are available in two power versions:
1.0 TSI, 70 kW (95 PS), top speed of 187 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 11.0 seconds, combined consumption of 4.4 l per 100 km, 101 g CO2/km. Transmission: choice of 5-speed manual or 7 speed DSG.
1.0 TSI, 81 kW (110 PS), top speed of 200 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 9.8 seconds, combined consumption of 4.5 l per 100 km, 104 g CO2/km. Transmission: 6-speed manual.
(All values given apply to the manual gearbox variant.)
Due to their compact construction and the aluminium crankcase, they both now weigh ten kilograms less than the 1.2-litre engines they are replacing, and their running is particularly smooth and refined. The free inertial forces are low and the customary balancing shaft for three-cylinder engines is therefore not necessary. This saves on weight and helps to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
In addition to the two 1.0 TSI engines, three more engines are available for the ŠKODA RAPID. All engines feature brake energy recovery and a Stop-Start function and fulfil the EU6 emissions standard. The diesel engines operate with common-rail direct injection and a diesel particulate filter. There is a choice of:
1.4 TSI, 92 kW (125 PS), top speed of 208 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, combined consumption of 4.8 l per 100 km, 113 g CO2/km. Transmission: 7-speed DSG
1.4 TDI, 66 kW (90 PS), top speed of 185 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 11.7 seconds, combined consumption of 3.9 l per 100 km, 103 g CO2/km. Transmission: choice of 5-speed manual or 7 speed DSG.
1.6 TDI, 85 kW (116 PS), top speed of 201 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 10.0 seconds, combined consumption of 4.1 l per 100 km, 107 g CO2/km. Transmission: 5-speed manual.
(All values apply to the TDI variant with a manual gearbox and the TSI variant which is coupled with DSG.)
ŠKODA Connect – ‘always online’
Occupants in the upgraded ŠKODA RAPID have the option of being ‘always online’ via a Wi-Fi connection. The new ŠKODA Connect services consist of Infotainment Online for information and entertainment, and the Care Connect services for assistance and services. Infotainment Online services include Online Traffic Information in real time, petrol stations (including up-to-date fuel prices), parking spaces, current news and weather reports.
The Care Connect services support the driver in many situations and are available for all trim levels with the Amundsen and Swing infotainment systems.
The range includes the automatic Emergency Call, which connects to an emergency call centre when a restraint system has been deployed, the Breakdown Call and the Proactive Service with direct contact to a ŠKODA garage of the driver’s choice to have questions answered or to arrange the next service.
Via the ŠKODA Connect app, the driver can, at any time, remotely access information about the car and check on its status. Furthermore, it is possible to send navigation destinations to the car. Those who struggle to remember where their car is parked can also have its current location displayed on their smartphone.
Comprehensive infotainment programme
The ŠKODA RAPID’s music and navigation systems are based on the second generation of the Modular Infotainment Matrix. Features including the ŠKODA surround system, the Bluetooth hands free set and USB ports are available as standard or as an option. In addition, the SmartLink+ smartphone interface, which operates the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink™ standards, allows the usage of apps on the ŠKODA RAPID’s display.
The numerous ʽSimply Clever’ features make ŠKODAs particularly popular. New features in the upgraded ŠKODA RAPID include two USB ports in the rear, which can be used to charge smartphones or other small mobile devices.
In addition, there are 19 smart 'Simply Clever' features in the car (as standard or optional): including an ice scraper in the fuel filler flap, a double-sided boot liner with a carpet and a rubber side, a high-vis-vest holder under the driver’s seat and an umbrella in a compartment under the passenger seat.
ŠKODA RAPID MONTE CARLO
Sportiness, individuality and design are the hallmarks of ŠKODA’s unmistakeable Monte Carlo models. These models score points with their stylish sporty accents and interior as well as their attractive specification. The Monte Carlo name is a tribute to the brand’s long and successful history in motorsport.
Black design features underline the car’s dynamic appearance: the trim that frames the radiator grille and the wing mirror housings are black, as are the front and rear spoiler lips and the sill trims. The ŠKODA RAPID MONTE CARLO features black 16-inch alloy wheels in the Italia design with burnished rims; the black Torino 17-inch alloy wheels are newly available as an option (from CW 32/2017).
The rear window and rear side windows are tinted (SunSet), as are the tail lights. The black rear diffuser also demonstrates the car’s sporty character. The ŠKODA RAPID MONTE CARLO features bi-xenon headlights as standard; these include dark underlays for the front fog lights with integrated cornering function.
The interior of the ŠKODA RAPID MONTE CARLO also has a sporty feel. The three-spoke sports steering wheel is covered in black, perforated leather; red, decorative stitching provides a dramatic contrast. The gearstick knob, the centre armrest and the door armrests also come in black leather with red, decorative stitching. The driver and passengers sit on sports seats that are covered in unique fabrics in a black/red design with grey horizontal stripes. The front door sills bear the Monte Carlo lettering and the black floor mats feature black, decorative stitching. A carbon-effect trim along the dashboard underlines the sporty ambience. The pedals are stainless steel and, as before, the instrument cluster has a special sports-graphic background.

In April ŠKODA matches record level of global deliveries from last year
› Sales: ŠKODA delivered 97,300 vehicles to customers in April
› Markets: double-digit growth in Central Europe (+13.7%) and Eastern Europe (+11.4%)
› Models: deliveries of the ŠKODA FABIA increased by 2.4% in April
› World premiere: ŠKODA will unveil the new KAROQ SUV model on 18 May
Mladá Boleslav, 11 May 2017 – ŠKODA vehicles are continuing to enjoy great popularity worldwide. The Czech car manufacturer achieved 97,300 deliveries to customers in April, thereby matching the record level from the same month last year (April 2016: 97,200). In April, the brand performed particularly well in Central Europe (+13.7%) and Eastern Europe (+11.4%). ŠKODA expects further impetus for growth from its new ŠKODA KAROQ compact SUV. The new model will be celebrating its world premiere on 18 May in Stockholm.
“In April, we matched the record level from April 2016, thereby proving our strengths in challenging market conditions,” said Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “The ŠKODA KODIAQ’s positive start offers a glimpse of the strength of our SUV campaign. With the new KAROQ, which will be celebrating its world premiere in a few days’ time, we will further improve our position in the important SUV segment,” added Eichhorn.
As part of its 2025 Strategy, ŠKODA is consistently advancing the expansion of its model range with an extensive SUV campaign. Following the market launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ, another model – the ŠKODA KAROQ – will be launched. The brand’s new compact SUV will be introduced to the global public for the first time on 18 May in Stockholm. Its market launch will be at the end of the year.
In Western Europe, ŠKODA came close to last year’s high level in April with 41,100 deliveries (April 2016: 41,400 vehicles). With 14,400 deliveries (April 2016: 14,900 vehicles), Germany remains the strongest individual market in Europe. Growth has been achieved in France (2,300 vehicles; +7.4%), Belgium (2,300 vehicles; +12.3%), Austria (2,300 vehicles; +9.6%), Spain (2,200 vehicles; +3.2 per cent), Italy (2,100 vehicles; +3.9%) and Greece (400 vehicles; +66.1%).
In Central Europe, ŠKODA saw an increase of 13.7% to 18,700 deliveries (April 2016: 16,400 vehicles). In April, the brand increased sales by 8.4% to 8,700 vehicles (April 2016: 8,000). Particularly strong growth rates can be seen in Poland (5,400 vehicles; +14.5%), Slovakia (1,900 vehicles; +11.1%), Croatia (800 vehicles; +111.1%) and Slovenia (800 vehicles; +29.3%).
In Eastern Europe excluding Russia, vehicles delivered by the car manufacturer increased by 11.4% to 3,400 vehicles (April 2016: 3,100 vehicles). The Baltic states also achieved strong growth (700 vehicles; +15.5%), Serbia (600 vehicles; +16.8%), Ukraine (500 vehicles; +42.9%) and Bulgaria (300 vehicles; +19.0%). In Russia, ŠKODA deliveries increased in April by 8.9 per cent to 5,400 vehicles (April 2016: 4,900).
In China – ŠKODA’s largest individual market globally – the manufacturer achieved 20,900 deliveries last month (April 2016: 23,800 vehicles; -12.2%). The decrease – which was expected by ŠKODA – can largely be attributed to the changes currently being made to the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA RAPID. ŠKODA expects sales to return to normal in the second quarter.
Deliveries by the ŠKODA brand in April 2017 (in units, rounded, by model; +/- in per cent compared to same month last year):

ŠKODA RAPID (17,500; -3.4%)
