New ŠKODA KAROQ celebrates motor show premiere at IAA 2017 in Frankfurt
› New compact SUV continues brand’s SUV campaign
› First for ŠKODA: Customizable digital instrument panel
› Always online with LTE module and ŠKODA Connect
› Largest luggage capacity in its class
› Compact SUV with modern design language continues brand’s SUV offensive
› All new ŠKODA models on show at IAA in hall 3 from 14 to 24 September
Mladá Boleslav/Frankfurt, 4 September 2017 – Curtain up for the new ŠKODA KAROQ. The traditional Czech brand presents their new compact SUV at the IAA in Frankfurt. The ŠKODA KAROQ will be making its public debut at the ŠKODA stand in hall 3. A first for ŠKODA: a digital instrument panel. The SUV also comes fully networked with LTE module and ŠKODA Connect. Its emotive and dynamic design with crystalline features characterises the brand's new SUV design language. ŠKODA will be presenting the SUV alongside a host of new models in hall 3 from 14 to 24 September.
The ŠKODA KAROQ is a sport utility vehicle with character: its emotional and dynamic design with numerous crystalline elements showcases ŠKODA’s new design language. The compact SUV measures 4382 mm in length, 1841 mm in width and 1605 mm in height. The long wheelbase of 2638 millimetres guarantees plenty of room for passengers. The boot has a volume of 521 litres with the rear seats in the default position. Folding the rear seats forward increases the boot capacity to 1630 litres. ŠKODA has incorporated several ‘Simply Clever’ ideas into the new compact SUV including the virtual pedal, which opens the boot hands-free and the optional VarioFlex back seats. In combination with the VarioFlex rear seat, the storage space is flexible and holds between 479 and 588 litres. The VarioFlex system consists of three separate rear seats that can be individually adjusted and completely removed – the compact SUV is then converted into a van with a maximum load volume of 1810 litres.
The ŠKODA KAROQ is the most digitalised vehicle in ŠKODA’s model range. This is the first time a fully customisable digital instrument panel has been offered in a ŠKODA. The displays can be personalised and are linked to the infotainment system. The vehicle’s extensive network ensures a comfortable and safe ride for driver and passengers alike. All connectivity solutions serve to improve the flow of information, and enhance the entertainment and safety. The ŠKODA KAROQ offers the latest infotainment systems. All capacitive touch displays feature ŠKODA’s characteristic glass design. ŠKODA KAROQ passengers are always online thanks to the LTE module and WLAN hotspot, to which each passenger’s mobile device can connect.
The new mobile online services of ŠKODA Connect are divided into two categories: the Infotainment Online services provide the information and navigation; the Care Connect services provide assistance in breakdowns and emergencies. For example, the emergency call feature automatically calls for assistance in the event of an accident. Additional online services are available on the ŠKODA Connect app, enabling users to remotely check, configure and find the car via their smartphone.
Intelligent networking between car and smartphone reaches a new level in the ŠKODA KAROQ. The phone box with inductive charging links the smartphone to the roof antenna and simultaneously charges it wirelessly.
The ŠKODA KAROQ also offers new driver assistance systems. Among others, Park Assist, Lane Assist and the traffic jam assistant enhance driving comfort. Blind Spot Detect, Front Assist with innovative pedestrian protection and the emergency assistant increase safety on the road. The compact SUV offers a comfortable light concept with full-LED headlights and rear lights, as well as ambient lighting for the interior.
Five engine variants are available, including two petrol engines and three diesel engines with outputs ranging from 85 kW (115 hp) to 140 kW (190 hp). Both petrol engines and two of the diesels are new to the programme. The displacement capacities are 1.0, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 litres. With the exception of the most powerful diesel, all powertrains can be ordered with a manual 6-speed gearbox or 7-speed DSG. The 2.0 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) comes as standard with 4×4 drive and 7-speed DSG. The new 1.5 TSI offers cylinder deactivation.
The ŠKODA KAROQ chassis sets new standards in its segment, demonstrating its quality even off the beaten track. From the Ambition equipment line up, driving profile selection with the modes Normal, Sport, Eco, Individual and Snow (4×4) is available on request.

ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE and ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT at the IAA 2017
› Two new variants expand the ŠKODA KODIAQ model range
› The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE: range of equipment emphasizes sporty orientation of the SUV derivate
› The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT: a robust appearance underlines off-road characteristics
› All new ŠKODA models will be on show in pavilion 3 at the IAA from 12-24 September
Mladá Boleslav, 5. September 2017 – With the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE and the ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT ŠKODA continues the brands SUV offensive campaign. The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE is the sporty variant with particularly dynamic equipment. The SCOUT variant of the large SUV comes as a standard as all-wheel drive and design elements of a typical off-roader. Both models are among the highlights on show on the ŠKODA stand in pavilion 3 at the IAA from 12-24 September.
For fans of a sporty appearance, ŠKODA has designed the KODIAQ SPORTLINE as an elegant and dynamic SUV variant. The exterior of the 4700 mm long car is complemented by 19-inch anthracite ‘Triglav’ alloy wheels‚ or optional 20-inch ‘Vega’ alloy wheels. The black radiator grille, black wing mirror housings (electrically adjustable, heated, folding), body-coloured protective door strips and individually designed rear bumper all help to create the SPORTLINE’s sporty appearance. Roof rails are available in black as an option. In addition, rear windows are tinted (SunSet).
Sports seats with silver stitching and Alcantara/leather covers, and silver-coloured pedals made from stainless steel and aluminium stand out within the black interior. The DSG variants come with gearshift paddles conveniently mounted behind the three-spoke sports leather steering wheel. The SPORTLINE logo is positioned on the front wings and the glove compartment.
The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE offers a specific set of indicators on central display of infotainment system. It displays oil and coolant temperatures, acceleration and boost pressure. The lap timer for example allows the driver to subsequently analyse statistics for each lap.
The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE comes with a choice of two petrol engines and two diesel engines ranging from 110 kW (150 PS) to 140 kW (190 PS).
The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT comes equipped with all-wheel drive as standard and emphasises its off-road capabilities both visually as well as through its technological features. Silver matt-coloured design elements such as parts on both bumpers, the roof rails and wing mirror housings as well as distinctive underbody protection at the front and rear emphasise the SCOUT’s robust appearance. The Rough Road package protects against damage to the engine and underbody. 19-inch, anthracite ‘Crater’ alloy wheels also contribute to its powerful appearance. There is a choice of two petrol engines with power outputs of 110 kW (150 PS) and 132 kW (180 PS) as well as two diesel engines producing 110 kW (150 PS) and 140 kW (190 PS).
The SCOUT logo is positioned on the front wings and the glove compartment. The black interior features seats covered with a leather/Alcantara combination that also bear the SCOUT logo. The door trims are also covered in Alcantara. The KODIAQ logo adorns all four door sills. The dashboard and the doors are furnished with special wooden decorative strips (‘Ash Wood’). The three-spoke multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in leather. The infotainment screen specially displays the steering angle, a compass, altimeter, and oil and coolant temperatures.
The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT stands out with its distinct design features. The SCOUT variant (4,706 mm) is nine millimetres longer than the base model KODIAQ and, just like the base model, offers up to seven seats as well as the largest boot in its segment. The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT impresses in many areas: with its modern design, it represents a successful mix of emotiveness and rationality.

ŠKODA with three attractive SUVs and VISION E study at IAA in Frankfurt
› ŠKODA presents VISION E and KAROQ as well as model variants KODIAQ SCOUT and SPORTLINE at IAA in Frankfurt
› ŠKODA VISION E is ŠKODA's first purely electric drive concept car
› ŠKODA KAROQ is traditional Czech brand’s first vehicle with digital instrument cluster
› ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT: series-standard four-wheel drive and underbody protection underline off-road qualities
› ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE with enhanced sports features
Frankfurt, 12 September 2017 – Today, ŠKODA presented the ŠKODA VISION E concept car for the first time in Europe at the IAA in Frankfurt (12-24 September). The study is the first all-electric vehicle in the company’s history. ŠKODA is also continuing its SUV campaign at the IAA: The new compact SUV ŠKODA KAROQ is celebrating its trade show premiere and is the traditional Czech brand’s first model to feature a fully customizable digital instrument cluster. With the ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT and ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE, the car manufacturer also introduces two attractive model variants of its large SUV.
The Press Kit including texts, photos and videos is available as digital presentation or at
www.skoda-storyboard.com
.
ŠKODA is taking a big step towards a digital future with the ŠKODA VISION Estudy, which is celebrating its European premiere in Frankfurt. The first electric concept car in the company's history offers autonomous driving at level 3 and raises connectivity to a new level: In addition to a screen on the dashboard and a central touch-screen display, each passenger also has their own screen.
Numerous details such as vehicle data and entertainment can be accessed via these touch-screens: In each door, there is a phone box that charges smartphones inductively. At the same time, the box serves as an interface: the individual touch-screen displays allow passengers to access personal settings, data and information conveniently.
The design of the ŠKODA VISION E study shows key elements of ŠKODA’s new design language for electric vehicles. Compared to the version that celebrated its world premiere in Shanghai, the front is now even more distinctive. The car’s unique features include counter-opening doors and four individual rotatable seats. A typical ŠKODA: Thanks to the long wheelbase of 2851 millimetres, the interior is extremely spacious and comfortable. The conceptual elimination of the central tunnel also provides additional room.
Electric engines with a total output of 225 kW (306 hp) drive all four wheels. The level-3 automated VISION E has an impressive range of up to 500 kilometres and a top speed of 180 km/h. On motorways, the concept car can accelerate, steer, brake and avoid obstacles without driver input. The Car Park Autopilot automatically manoeuvres the vehicle to empty spaces. The VISION E is charged inductively.
The new ŠKODA KAROQ is an SUV with a unique character. Its emotional and dynamic design with numerous crystalline elements demonstrates the brand’s current SUV design language. The long wheelbase (2638 mm) also guarantees plenty of space for passengers and luggage. With the rear seat in the default position, the boot has a capacity of 521 litres – the largest luggage compartment in its class. The ŠKODA KAROQ also features many ‘Simply Clever’ details, such as the virtual pedal, which opens the boot door with a foot swipe beneath the rear bumper. The optional VarioFlex rear seat solution makes the storage volume variable – between 479 and 588 litres. The VarioFlex system consists of three separate rear seats that can be adjusted individually and completely removed; the compact SUV is then transformed into a van with a maximum load volume of 1810 litres.
The ŠKODA KAROQ is the brand’s most digitised vehicle. This is ŠKODA’s first vehicle with a fully customizable digital instrument cluster. The display can be personalised and linked to the infotainment system. All captive touch displays feature the brand’s characteristic glass design. Thanks to the LTE module and WLAN hotspot that each passenger can connect to, everyone in the ŠKODA KAROQ is always online. Five engine variants with a power output of 85 kW (115 hp) to 140 kW (190 hp) are available – including two petrol engines and three diesel engines. Both petrol engines and two of the diesel variants are new to the programme.
With the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE, the Czech car manufacturer presents a particularly dynamic version of its new large SUV. The series-standard anthracite-coloured 19-inch ‘Triglav’ alloy wheels and the optional 20-inch ‘Vega’ Anthracite alloys characterise the exterior of the dynamic model version. Sporty highlights also include the black grille, black exterior mirrors (electrically adjustable, heated, foldable), door protection strips finished in the car colour, and an individually designed rear bumper. The rear windows are tinted (SunSet), a black roof rack is available as an option.
Also in the black interior, there are many new details and features – such as sports seats with Alcantara® upholstery and silver-coloured seams. The stainless steel and aluminium pedals also underline the sporty, dynamic character of the vehicle. In the DSG versions, the multifunction leather steering wheel also has shift paddles. SPORTLINE logos are located on the front mudguards and glove compartment.
The central infotainment display of the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE shows the oil and coolant temperatures, acceleration, and boost pressure. The lap timer can also be used to measure the time of each lap.
The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT also stands out visually and technically from the basic model. It is equipped with all-wheel drive. Details such as the roof rack, exterior mirror casing and the special underbody protection (front and rear) are also in silver and underline the robust appearance of the ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT. The Alcantara®-upholstered seats in the black interior bear the SCOUT logo and come as standard along with the door trim in the same material. The four door sill trims feature the KODIAQ logo. The infotainment screen displays the steering angle, compass and altimeter, as well as oil and coolant temperatures.
Petrol and diesel engines with outputs ranging from 110 kW (150 hp) to 140 kW (190 hp) are available for the ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT and SPORTLINE model versions.

ŠKODA AUTO CEO Bernhard Maier voted Brand Manager of the Year 2017
› Bernhard Maier wins honorary award in Automotive Brand Contest 2017
› Panel recognises his outstanding achievements for brand and design
› Award was presented at start of International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt
Mladá Boleslav/Frankfurt am Main, 13 September 2017 – The panel of the German Design Council (GDC) has named ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier Brand Manager of the year 2017. Maier received the award from the GDC for his outstanding achievements with ŠKODA. At the same time, the GDC acknowledged how important design is to the ŠKODA brand. The GDC presented the award in Frankfurt on Tuesday evening as part of the Automotive Brand Contest, which is now one of the most important competitions in the automotive world.
“I am delighted with this special award, which I gladly accept as a representative of the entire ŠKODA team,” Bernhard Maier said last night at the ceremony, which took place at the start of the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt Palm Garden. “Under the new global brand management, we have not only launched great new products, such as the ŠKODA KODIAQ and the new ŠKODA KAROQ, but also sharpened and realigned ŠKODA as a brand in all dimensions.”
The Automotive Brand Contest is held annually by the GDC and has gained in importance since first appearing in 2011. With 14 competition categories and four special categories, it covers the complete design spectrum, ranging from vehicle design for premium and volume brands through brand design and multimedia networking to campaigns and events. The independent panel of experts consists of representatives of media, design, brand communication and universities with a keen interest in the automotive world.
ŠKODA has already received several awards from the German Design Council for outstanding design: In 2015, the ŠKODA SUPERB won the ‘Best of Best’ award in the ‘Exterior Volume Brand’ category; the ŠKODA OCTAVIA (2013) and the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK (2014) had won the international design competition previously.

ŠKODA wins five family car of the year awards as voted for by readers
› Traditional Czech brand has been given a total of 22 awards since the first ‘AUTOStraßenverkehr’ and ‘Leben & Erziehen’ readers’ choice awards in 2011
› Double success: ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI is overall winner and best import car in the €15,000–20,000 category
› Best import cars in their respective segments: SUPERB COMBI and YETI
› ŠKODA FABIA COMBI voted best car under €15,000
› ŠKODA models prove their worth as great family cars with exemplary safety, generous space and a high degree of reliability
Mladá Boleslav, 13 September 2017 – The best family cars of the year have been confirmed. Readers of the German specialist magazine ‘AUTOStraßenverkehr’ and parenting magazine ‘Leben & Erziehen’ voted four ŠKODA models family car of the year. The ŠKODA FABIA COMBI, ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI, ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI and ŠKODA YETI were victorious as the best family car across five categories. This means the traditional Czech brand has been given a total of 22 awards since the first readers’ choice awards in 2011.
The bestselling ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI came top overall in the €15,000–20,000 category and was the best import car in its segment. The ŠKODA YETI won best import car in the €20,000–25,000 category, whilst the ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI was voted best import car in the €25,000–30,000 price range. The ŠKODA FABIA COMBI small car was the overall winner for models under €15,000.
The
ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI
achieved two victories: 13.7 per cent of readers voted ŠKODA’s bestseller the overall winner in the €15,000–20,000 category. In addition, the versatile Combi received 22 per cent of readers’ votes for best import car in this price range, matching its success of the previous year.
With 39.1 per cent of all votes, the
ŠKODA FABIA COMBI
came top amongst cars costing under €15,000. This means ŠKODA’s popular small car has snapped up the title of family car of the year for the fourth time in a row.
The best family car among the import models costing €20,000–25,000 was the
ŠKODA YETI
. 11.6 per cent of all votes went to the compact SUV. Its successor, the SKODA KAROQ, is ready to be launched, celebrating its exhibition premiere at this year’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt.
The
ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI
impressed as the best import car in the €25,000–30,000 category. 24.3 per cent of readers voted for the estate version of ŠKODA’s top-of-the-range model, meaning ŠKODA’s flagship has repeated its success from 2016.
For this year’s readers’ choice awards, 152 models competed across seven price categories. There was an award for best import car and the overall winner in each category – with the exception of cars costing less than €15,000, which only featured import cars. A total of 18,270 readers of the German specialist magazine ‘AUTOStraßenverkehr’ and parenting magazine ‘Leben & Erziehen’ cast their vote. ŠKODA has achieved a total of 22 victories since the first readers’ choice awards in 2011.
The models produced by the long-established Czech brand offer many qualities that are particularly important for families. In every segment, ŠKODA models offer larger-than-average space for passengers and luggage, as well as numerous storage solutions – perfect for stowing travel provisions and children’s toys. The cars from the traditional Czech brand also score points based on their versatility: folding seats and numerous ‘Simply Clever’ features such as practical bag hooks or nets in the boot make it easy to load the family car using its space effectively. Another important criterion is safety. ŠKODA models regularly achieve top ratings in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

Mladá Boleslav, 15 September 2017 – 30 years ago, ŠKODA entered a new era with the introduction of the modern FAVORIT hatchback. The premiere on 16 September 1987 at the International Engineering Fair in Brno marked a turning point for the traditional Czech company. With its state-of-the-art design, as well as the combination of front engine and front-wheel drive, the ŠKODA FAVORIT was on par with Western competitors in its class. The agile compact model also excelled in rally racing.
“The FAVORIT signalled the start of ŠKODA’s dynamic development, which has continued to this day,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. "Although the circumstances were anything but favourable, a team of passionate and enthusiastic engineers created a vehicle that could immediately compete on the western market. The progressive concept of the FAVORIT as well as the developers’ expertise and experience were decisive factors behind the Volkswagen Group’s interest in the ŠKODA brand in Czechoslovakia following the 1989 Velvet Revolution.”
The project of a modern passenger car with front engine and front-wheel drive was based on a decision by the Czechoslovak government in December 1982. The implementation deadlines were extremely short: The development stage was to be completed within two and a half years (by June 30, 1985) and production was to start within five years. As the team leader, experienced engineer Petr Hrdlička teamed up with a group of highly qualified and motivated employees who took on the task with great personal commitment. At least, they were not starting from scratch, as the engineers had previously dealt with this concept and developed the front-wheel drive prototype ŠKODA 780.
Attractive coat for modern technology: Design by Bertone
The design played a major role in the acceptance of the new vehicle. Following the trend of the early 1980s, ŠKODA decided to entrust the design of the new compact car to an Italian designer. The Turin studio ‘Stile Bertone’ was chosen to develop the body versions of the hatchback, estate, notchback and coupe, as well as several interior versions. In addition, the design studio was commissioned to construct a total of 19 prototype models in various designs. A team from ŠKODA’s headquarters in Mladá Boleslav was responsible for implementing the design in series production. The Czech engineers demonstrated a great deal of creativity and expertise in this area as well: Compared to the ŠKODA 120 rear-engine model, they reduced the number of press parts from 405 to just 227. In addition, the 40mm shorter FAVORIT had an interior space that was 85mm longer and a larger boot volume than its predecessor. The ŠKODA FAVORIT became a fully-fledged family car and formed an excellent basis for the subsequent ŠKODA FORMAN estate version.
Diverse international cooperation
The ŠKODA team worked closely with the Institute of Motor Vehicles in Prague (ÚVMV), where, for example, simulated test drives were carried out amounting to the equivalent of 100,000 kilometres within a week. Later, the prototypes were put to the test on actual roads, covering over a quarter of a million kilometres. Road trials were also conducted over the Alps and in the heat of the Italian Riviera. The brakes were tested for effectiveness and stability on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and the Turracher Höhe in Austria. During the development phase, the ŠKODA engineers cooperated with many external specialists. Experts from Porsche, for example, contributed to the suspension of the engine, the geometry of the front axle and the reduction of the interior noise level. The final phase of the ŠKODA FAVORIT’s development involved dynamic tests on Porsche’s test track in Weissach.
Considerable attention was paid to the "heart" of the new model. This was the proven OHV four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1,289 cc and a power output of 43 kW (58 hp) or 46 kW (63 hp) – initially with a carburettor; from 1993, with fuel injection. ŠKODA satisfied the high demands of the European clientele in terms of reliability and the new exhaust regulations through the use of particularly durable materials for the valve seats, pistons with steel core, higher quality cylinder liners, stiffer cylinder and crank cases, a hardened crankshaft and many other optimizations.
Acclaimed premiere at the International Engineering Fair in Brno, 1987
The ŠKODA FAVORIT celebrated its official world premiere on September 16, 1987, at the
29th International Engineering Fair in Brno where hundreds of thousands of curious motorists and journalists from all over Europe took a closer look at the new model. Initially, a limited number of vehicles was built at Vrchlabí for homologation. Full production was launched in early December 1987. From August 1988, the FAVORIT series was also produced at the headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. The first FAVORIT 136 L (de Luxe) type vehicles headed to the dealerships in the fourth quarter of 1988 and were available starting at 84,600 Czechoslovakian crowns.
The modernised FAVORIT: continuously improving
Following the Velvet Revolution in November 1989 and the transition to a market economy, it quickly became apparent that only the entry of a strong foreign partner could ensure ŠKODA’s long-term competitiveness. After intensive negotiations with several interested parties, ŠKODA became a member of the Volkswagen Group in the spring of 1991. The ŠKODA FAVORIT, one of the few passenger cars of modern construction designed in the former Eastern bloc, proved to be an excellent base even after entering Volkswagen. Now, the model received upgrades in technology, appearance and quality. The first facelift rolled out in 1991, with the asymmetrically mounted logo being moved to the centre of the radiator grille. The major revision of January 1993 will be remembered by many drivers for its impressive advertising campaign: ŠKODA attached 548 flags to the FAVORIT– one for each improvement to the compact model.
Thanks to the successive modifications, the FAVORIT series kept pace with customers’ increasing requirements regarding safety, comfort and design. This ensured the model family’s continued success in challenging markets; in Germany, sales between 1990 and 1991 almost doubled. Sales of the ŠKODA FAVORIT and the FORMAN estate version received a further boost with the introduction of special editions, for example, Sport Line, Black Line, Marathon and Excellent. 783,168 ŠKODA FAVORITs were built between August 1987 and September 1994. Alongside the FORMAN estate and commercial vehicle derivatives, including the PICK-UP model, ŠKODA built a total of 1,077,126 vehicles of this model before the ŠKODA FELICIA and the FELICIA COMBI took the baton.
Motorsport: ŠKODA FAVORIT at rallies – success even at the world cup
With the new FAVORIT, ŠKODA entered the rally world championship at the end of 1989, quickly continuing the successes of the Mladá Boleslav rear-wheelers. In 1990, the ŠKODA FAVORIT took part in selected rallies at the World Championship, the European Championship and the Czechoslovakian Rally Championship. Gradually, ŠKODA increased its involvement in motorsport; in 1994, the FAVORIT completed all the World Cup races for the first time. The model achieved its greatest success at the most famous rally in the world – the Monte Carlo Rally. The highly experienced duo Pavel Sibera/Petr Gross won in their class with the FAVORIT 136L four times in a row between 1991 and 1994. In 1994 the traditional brand succeeded in the biggest coup of all: in the category for vehicles with <2.0-litre displacement and a driven axle, the ŠKODA FAVORIT took the title in the FIA World Cup Formula 2.
ŠKODA AUTO is celebrating the anniversary of this model series, which is particularly significant for the company's history, with a special exhibition at the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav. From 18 September, various prototypes and documents will be on display. On 26 September at 17.30, a discussion panel, which will include leading figures from the early days of the model, will be speaking about the exciting time of change 30 years ago. They will be sharing their memories and providing a unique insight into the time when ŠKODA wrote the first chapter in its modern-day success story.

Anniversary of the ŠKODA 450: predecessor of the FELICIA Cabriolet celebrates its 60th birthday
› In September 1957, the 2+2-seater with folding roof had its exhibition premiere in Brno
› The ŠKODA 450 was the immediate predecessor of the extremely popular ŠKODA FELICIA Cabriolet
› A total of 1,010 ŠKODA 450s rolled off the production line, around two-thirds of which were delivered to customers abroad, including the USA
Mladá Boleslav, 25 September 2017 – ŠKODA AUTO is celebrating the birthday of a groundbreaking model: exactly 60 years ago, in September 1957, the ŠKODA 450 made its debut at the Mechanical Engineering Trade Fair in Brno. The elegant roadster featured a folding roof and stood out thanks to its attractive, sporty design. The model rolled off the production line at the Kvasiny plant and was predominantly destined for demanding international markets including Germany, the United Kingdom and the USA. In 1959, the long-established Czech brand introduced the extremely popular successor, the ŠKODA FELICIA Cabriolet.
In September 1957, the largest Czech car manufacturer offered a particular highlight to the more than 1.6 million visitors of the third Czech Mechanical Engineering Trade Fair: the new ŠKODA 450 roadster. The production model was very closely based on the ŠKODA 440 roadster design study, which the car manufacturer had presented to the public in the same place one year earlier. In October 1957, the ŠKODA 450 also created a sensation outside of Czechoslovakia: at its debut at the Motor Show in London, the roadster shared centre stage with the incumbent Miss USA, Charlotte Sheffield (1936–2016). Renowned photographer Vilém Heckel shot the ŠKODA 450 and the beauty queen together. To date, this series of pictures is considered to be amongst the crème de la crème of Czechoslovakian advertising photography.
The ŠKODA 450 was the top-of-the-range variant in the 440-445-450 model series. The model designation originated from the number of cylinders and the engine’s power output of 50 PS (36.8 kW). The longitudinally mounted, four-cylinder engine drove the rear wheels. Thanks to its innovative chassis design with independent suspension, passengers benefited from the roadster’s comfortable ride, even on rougher roads. Besides its attractive design, the spacious interior and the practical, folding roof contributed to the 2+2-seater’s popularity. Both the driver and front passenger sat on a one-piece bench seat. The individually folding backrests made for easy access to the two rear seats.
With a kerb weight of 930 kg and dimensions (LxWxH) of 4.07x1.60x1.38 m, the ŠKODA 450 accelerated up to 128 km/h. The 1,089-cc four-cylinder was equipped with two carburettors and made do with an average of nine litres of petrol per 100 km. The driver could engage each of the gears in the 4-speed gearbox using the lever built into the steering column.
Up to the end of 1957, the first ten pre-series ŠKODA 450 models were produced at the Kvasiny plant and series production began in the summer of 1958. By the end of production, ŠKODA had manufactured a total of 1,010 of the roadsters. Around two thirds of all ŠKODA 450s produced went to customers abroad. Particularly remarkable is the fact that ŠKODA exported 408 of this vehicle type to the USA, which, at the time, was a unique accomplishment for a product from an Eastern bloc state. In Czechoslovakia, the ŠKODA 450 signalled a turning point in the automotive market. This was because it was one of the first models that customers could buy on the free market without having to wait several years for the necessary coupon like they usually had to before. The price of the ŠKODA 450 was 42,000 korunas. This made the roadster considerably cheaper than the competition’s models, which were also available without a coupon: for a GAZ 21, customers had to pay 55,000 korunas and the Tatra 603 cost as much as 98,000 korunas. In addition, the ŠKODA 450 impressed with a higher level of practicality in comparison to its rivals.
With the ŠKODA FELICIA, the successor to the 450 rolled off the production line in Kvasiny at the start of 1959. The new model successively benefited from several technical developments. For example, ŠKODA replaced the front axle’s transverse leaf springs with coil springs. Other changes included the newly designed dashboard and the sporty, central gear lever which was now mounted on the transmission tunnel. The rear fins, which at the time were state-of-the-art, were also a real eye-catcher. By 1964, ŠKODA had produced a total of 14,863 FELICIAs. This also included the open-top sports car variant, the FELICIA SUPER, which came with the choice of a folding roof or a hardtop and was predominantly intended for export. With its combination of timeless, elegant design and more robust and reliable technology, the FELICIA is one of the most important icons in ŠKODA’s company history to date. The model ranks as one of the most coveted classic cars from the Czech post-war era.

ŠKODA AUTO reaches milestone of 20 million cars produced
› The milestone vehicle, a ŠKODA KAROQ, rolled off the production line at the Kvasiny plant
› In 1905, car production started in Mladá Boleslav with the Laurin & Klement Voiturette A
› The new ŠKODA KAROQ will be launched onto the markets from the end of October 2017
Mladá Boleslav / Kvasiny, 27 September 2017 – At the ŠKODA AUTO Kvasiny plant, the company’s 20 millionth vehicle rolled off the production line. The milestone vehicle is the ŠKODA KAROQ. The current production milestone underlines ŠKODA AUTO’s successful growth strategy. Company’s development has been exemplary, particularly since becoming part of Volkswagen Group in 1991.
"Producing 20 million cars is a tremendous milestone in our company's history," says ŠKODA AUTO CEO Bernhard Maier. "We are aiming for another production and sales record this year. The basis for this is our Strategy 2025, which will sustainably prepare ŠKODA AUTO for the processes of change in society and the automotive industry."
"We have 20 million reasons to be proud," says ŠKODA Board Member for Production and Logistics, adding: "This achievement highlights the performance of our Czech and international manufacturing sites and the expertise of our team."
ŠKODA AUTO is one of the longest-established vehicle manufacturers in the world. As early as 1905, the company started car production in Mladá Boleslav with the Voiturette A that had been developed by the company founders Laurin and Klement. Since then, ŠKODA AUTO has produced 20 million vehicles at its Czech and international plants. Then, as now, mobility is at a historical turning point. At the beginning of the 20th century, the triumph of the automobile over other forms of individual transport became apparent and, a little later, mass motorisation started. Today, the automotive industry is facing radical change too. It is characterised by the core topics of electromobility, autonomous driving and connectivity in particular. With the 2025 Strategy, the long-established Czech brand is very well prepared for these challenges. ŠKODA AUTO is vigorously pressing ahead with the electrification of its model range and will offer five purely electric models in various segments by 2025. With the ŠKODA VISION E the manufacturer presented its vision of electric and autonomous driving at the IAA in Frankfurt.
Rise to become a high-volume brand again
ŠKODA AUTO’s development has been exemplary, particularly since becoming part of Volkswagen Group 26 years ago. Since then, the company has rapidly risen to again become an internationally successful high-volume brand that currently offers seven model ranges and more than 40 model variants. As part of its growth strategy, ŠKODA AUTO utilises an international and efficient production network. At present, ŠKODA vehicles are manufactured at a total of 15 sites in eight countries. In recent years, the Czech car manufacturer has further expanded its production capacity. To this end, the brand has invested more than 300 million Czech korunas in production
processes and factories in the Czech Republic alone since 1991.
In 2014, ŠKODA produced more than one million vehicles in a calendar year for the first time. In December 2016, the 19 millionth vehicle of the long-established Czech brand rolled off the production line at the main plant in Mladá Boleslav.
In the coming years, ŠKODA AUTO will continue its growth strategy. The growth strategy is currently driven by the SUV campaign that was started last year. The latest coup is the new ŠKODA KAROQ, which will set new benchmarks in the dynamically growing SUV segment. The market launch will start at the end of October 2017. The ŠKODA SUV model range also includes the ŠKODA KODIAQ, which celebrated its launch in February of this year.

ŠKODA KAROQ awarded Best New Design among all compact SUVs
› ŠKODA KAROQ wins prestigious 'Autonis' award in 'auto motor und sport' readers' poll in Germany
› Traditional Czech brand’s SUV secures 28.7% of votes, prevailing against 17 contenders
› KAROQ features distinctive emotive design and numerous crystalline elements
Mladá Boleslav, 2 October 2017 – The readers of the German trade magazine 'auto motor und sport' have voted the new ŠKODA KAROQ as the best new design in the category of compact SUV’s. The ŠKODA KAROQ prevailed against 17 competitors to win the converted ‘Autonis’ award. ŠKODA KAROQ’s design language is typical of the brand – emotive and dynamic.
“We are proud that the ŠKODA KAROQ has been voted Best New Design by the readers of ‘auto motor und sport’,“ said Christian Strube, Board Member for Technical Development at ŠKODA AUTO. “The expressive design and clear design language of our vehicles has been exceptionally well received by the customers. The ‘Autonis’ award is a confirmation of our work, whilst also being an incentive for us to sharpen the design profile of our models,” added Strube.
In the 17th 'Autonis' reader poll, 88 new models from the last 12 months went head-to-head in a total of ten vehicle categories. The field of compact SUVs or off-road vehicles was the most fiercely competitive with 18 models. The ŠKODA KAROQ gained 28.7% of the 16,600 votes cast, securing the title of Best New Design among all compact SUVs.
The emotional and dynamic design of the ŠKODA KAROQ, with its clear lines and crystalline elements, is characteristic of the brand's SUV design language. The front is dominated by the two separate headlight units, the striking radiator grille and the three-dimensional surface design of the bumper and bonnet. Short overhangs, the retracted rear as well as the early falling roof line, which is optically extended by a contour in the D-pillar, characterize the sides. The modern design features include the tornado line, which extends from the front wings to the rear lights. The wheel arches are enclosed by wide wheel panels – a design feature typical of ŠKODA’s SUVs – and give the ŠKODA KAROQ a particularly powerful look.
The Czech car manufacturer is pushing ahead with its SUV campaign with the ŠKODA KAROQ. In addition to its powerful design, the KAROQ also boasts ŠKODA's typical qualities such as generous space, convenient Simply Clever features and modern connectivity solutions. From spring 2018, this will be the brand’s first model to feature a digital instrument cluster; information such as speed, revs and the navigation map are displayed digitally instead of on an analogue cluster. The driver can choose between various individually programmable layouts.

70 years of ŠKODA car production in Kvasiny
› ŠKODA SUPERB was the car manufacturer’s first vehicle to be produced in Kvasiny
› A pillar of the ŠKODA AUTO production network: three ŠKODA models, around 8,000 employees
› The Kvasiny plant is one of the most significant employers in the Hradec Králové region
› Production capacity will increase to more than 300,000 vehicles per year in the future
Mladá Boleslav/Kvasiny, 17 October 2017 – ŠKODA AUTO is celebrating 70 years of ŠKODA car production in Kvasiny. ŠKODA vehicles have been rolling off the production line at the Kvasiny plant from as early as 1947. Today, approximately 8,000 employees produce around 1,000 cars each day. In early 2017, the brand’s two-millionth vehicle was made here. In the future, more than 300,000 vehicles are to be produced at the location in Eastern Bohemia every year – to this end, ŠKODA AUTO is constantly modernising the plant.
“Kvasiny is a state-of the-art plant with a rich tradition and an excellent, highly competent workforce,” said Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Production and Logistics. “As a key part of the production network, our plant in Kvasiny is playing an important role in achieving the production targets defined in our 2025 Strategy. In the coming years, the plant’s annual production volume will increase further. To this end, we are investing heavily in the location and are upgrading Kvasiny to a production competence centre – for SUVs amongst other things,” added Oeljeklaus.
Cars have been built at the production site in Eastern Bohemia from as early as 1934; ŠKODA commenced production in Kvasiny with the ŠKODA SUPERB 13 years later – even back then the car was the brand’s flagship. Subsequent years saw further models being made here, including the FELICIA (1958 to 1964), the 110 R Coupé (1970 to 1980), the PICK-UP (1995 to 2001), the first and second generations of the SUPERB, and then the ROOMSTER and the YETI.
Currently, the ŠKODA AUTO plant in Kvasiny is undergoing the largest modernisation and expansion in its history. As part of the SUV campaign, which began with the ŠKODA KODIAQ, the manufacturer will invest a total of around seven billion Czech korunas in modernising the production processes. In the next few years, the production capacity will increase to more than 300,000 vehicles per year. Today, ŠKODA’s SUPERB and KODIAQ models are made here, as well as the newly developed compact SUV, the KAROQ. The ŠKODA AUTO plant in Kvasiny produces also the SUV SEAT ATECA.
In 2016, the workforce was augmented by a further 2,600 employees. ŠKODA AUTO currently employs around 8,000 members of staff in Kvasiny, making the company one of the region’s largest employers. In addition, the car manufacturer invests in regional infrastructure measures and promotes the appeal of the location by pursuing a variety of social endeavours.

› State-of-the-art technologies and cooperating robots – innovations at the Vrchlabí site have won several awards
› Vrchlabí site celebrates fifth anniversary of transmission production
Mladá Boleslav/Vrchlabí, 19 October 2017 – ŠKODA AUTO has produced 10 million gearboxes. These are used in ŠKODA models as well as other brands in the Volkswagen Group. Around 1700 people are currently employed in gearbox production at Mladá Boleslav and Vrchlabí.
“Producing ten million transmissions underscores the competitiveness of our component manufacturing,” says SKODA Board Member for Production Michael Oeljeklaus, adding: “The transmissions built in Mladá Boleslav and the DSG gearboxes produced in Vrchlabí boast the highest quality and reliability in daily use by millions of drivers.”
ŠKODA AUTO currently produces three types of gearbox, which are used in the ŠKODA model range. Last year, a total of 300,000 MQ200 transmissions, more than 325,000 MQ/SQ100 transmissions and approximately 469,000 DQ200 transmissions were produced.
The MQ 200 gearbox has been running off the production lines in Mladá Boleslav since 2000. It is used in petrol engines with displacements of 1.0 to 1.6 litres. These include current ŠKODA vehicles, as well as models made by Volkswagen, Audi and Seat. The production volume for the MQ 200 is currently around 1900 units per day; more than 6.5 million gearboxes of this type have been produced already.
Since 2011, the MQ100 / SQ100 transmission has also been built in Mladá Boleslav. Originally, these transmissions were developed for the ‘New-Small-Family’ models of the Volkswagen Group (ŠKODA CITIGO, VW up! and Seat Mii). The MQ100 / SQ100 transmissions have since been used in the ŠKODA FABIA and other small cars of the Volkswagen Group, each in combination with 1.0-litre petrol engines. The daily production volume is around 1400 units. To date, more than 1.6 million of these transmissions have been produced.
In addition to manual transmissions, ŠKODA AUTO also produces the automatic dual clutch transmission (DSG). The DQ200 seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is one of the most modern gearboxes of its kind in the automotive industry. Today the Vrchlabí workforce produces around 2100 units of this gearbox type every day, recently passing the 1.8 million mark. Cooperating robots are used for the production of DSG transmissions at the Vrchlabí plant. They support the employees in one of the most sensitive tasks in transmission manufacturing – inserting the gear actuator piston. A handling robot is also used, which can supply dozens of machines with parts and take empty containers back to the warehouse.
In 2012, the Vrchlabí site was transformed from a vehicle construction plant to an ultra-modern component manufacturing location. Within 18 months, a new factory was built and the existing production halls were modernized. The factory was awarded the European title ‘Factory of the Year 2015’ two years ago. The rapid changeover from a vehicle construction site to a component plant won it the title ‘Factory of the Year’ in the category ‘Outstanding location development’. Additional awards followed.
"The plant in Vrchlabí is now one of the most important DSG plants in the Volkswagen Group", says ŠKODA Head of Component Manufacturing Frank Engel. “Our awards fill us with pride, but at the same time, they represent an obligation. I am convinced that thanks to the expertise, commitment and high flexibility of the local workforce, the Vrchlabí plant has a great future.”
