Readers' Choice ‘Best Cars’: ŠKODA Octavia First Place for Third Year Running

› Success: ŠKODA Octavia named best import compact car in Germany for third consecutive time by readers of ‘Auto, Motor und Sport’
› Bestseller: ŠKODA Octavia sales increase 11% in 2015
› Versatile model: ŠKODA Octavia available in 13 versions

Mladá Boleslav/Stuttgart, 28 January 2016 – The readers of car magazine ‘Auto, Motor und Sport’ (‘AMS’) have voted the ŠKODA Octavia best import car in the compact class for the third consecutive year. Taking 18.1% of the votes, ŠKODA’s bestseller prevailed against the international competition in this fiercely competitive category.

“The ‘Auto, Motor und Sport’ readers’ choice is a very special award for us. These are the very people for whom we developed and built the car. The third success in a row makes it clear that we’ve got a lot right with the Octavia. This award is also an acknowledgement of the whole ŠKODA team’s tremendous commitment. They have worked hard to make the Octavia a very special car,” said ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier.

In 2015, ŠKODA delivered more than 430,000 Octavia models to customers around the world. This corresponds to a sales increase of 11.1% over the previous year. Almost 58,000 of these Octavias were newly registered in Germany in 2015, making this model series the sixth most popular overall, and the number-one imported model in the German Federal Motor Transport Authority’s (KBA) registration statistics. Not only is the Octavia a winner among the AMS readership; the true success of the model is evidenced in Germany’s new car registration figures.

Following the market launch of the ŠKODA Octavia RS 4×4 in November last year, 13 versions of ŠKODA’s top model are now available on the market: from the economical ŠKODA Octavia GreenLine and ŠKODA Octavia 4×4 to the Octavia RS 230 – the fastest ŠKODA Octavia of all time.

This year marked the 40th time renowned magazine ‘Auto, Motor und Sport’ had run their readers’ survey of the best cars. A total of 364 models were entered in eleven categories. With 18.1% of all votes in the compact-car category, the ŠKODA Octavia was voted number one among imported cars.

In Memory of a Legend: ‘Graf Kilowatt’ Born 130 Years Ago

› Successful racing driver, Count Alexander Joseph ‘Sasha’ Kolowrat Krakowsky born 29 January 1886
› ‘Graf Kilowatt’ won numerous prestigious races between 1904 and 1914 with motorbikes and automobiles produced by the Laurin & Klement brand
› ŠKODA Museum Director: “Kolowrat was one of the most important figures in motorsport at the turn of the 20th century”

Mladá Boleslav, 29 January 2016 – Graf Alexander Joseph Kolowrat-Krakowsky was born 130 years ago. The successful racing driver and Board Member at Laurin & Klement made a huge contribution to the successful development of the largest automobile manufacturer in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. He also achieved great motorsport successes.

“Sasha Kolowrat was one of the most important figures in motorsport at the turn of the 20th century,” explains Andrea Frydlová, Director of the ŠKODA Museum. “The impressive winning streak in prestigious international races and competitions was crucial for the future development of Laurin & Klement and later for ŠKODA. The successful career of Count Kolowrat and his colleagues from the factory team of Laurin & Klement is retold in a new exhibition at the ŠKODA Museum, which covers 115 years of the Mladá Boleslav brand’s success in motorsport.”

The member of one of the oldest noble families in Bohemia was born in Glen Ridge (New Jersey, USA) and grew up in the West Bohemian village of Týnec near Klatovy. His first motorcycle, a one-cylinder Laurin & Klement, was given to him by his father on passing his A-levels. He received a car made by the Mladá Boleslav brand two years later.

Kolowrat began his motorsport career in motorcycle racing. The Count’s first win was in September 1906 in the <65 kg motorcycle category of a hill climb near the Austrian spa town of Semmering. This was also the location of his victory one year later at the wheel of a Laurin & Klement car. In 1908, he won the first year of the race Zbraslav-Jíloviště in the two-litre class; the following year he went up against 102 rivals in the German Prince-Heinrich Rally. Kolowrat was also instrumental in the Laurin & Klement team’s success in the challenging St. Petersburg-Sevastopol race, keeping the upper hand in competing for the Karpathenpokal (1911). Kolowrat, who was also known as ‘Count Kilowatt’ for his energetic personality, not only stood out for his fast and safe driving style but also due to his exceptionally solid physique. His racing career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I in 1914.

In motorsport circles, Count Kolowrat’s name is most frequently associated with the Alpine Rally – a challenging race of up to 2932 kilometres. Kolowrat took poll position from the very first year (1910); in 1912, 1913 and 1914 he crossed the finish line without a single penalty point. The Alpine Rally had to be completed without stop gaps; the engines were constantly running. In addition, the drivers were given time limits for the completion of individual stages, with a referee travelling as a passenger in each racing car. The engine, transmission and other important vehicle parts were sealed, so they could not be replaced. Racers were given penalty points for late arrivals or starts, as well as unfair behaviour during the race. With all of those challenges, Sasha Kolowrat certainly knew his way around Laurin & Klement automobiles, often dominating the competition.

At the age of 24, the racing driver and entrepreneur became a member of the then ten-member Board of Directors for the automobile manufacturer in Mladá Boleslav. Kolowrat retained his stake in the company even after the First World War – at that time he was already a citizen of former Czechoslovakia. Following his marriage to Russian Princess Sophia Trubetskaya, he abandoned his racing career and dedicated his professional life to cinematography, working from then on with legendary stars like Marlene Dietrich and director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca).

At the height of his second career, Sasha Kolowrat fell ill with cancer of salivary gland at the age of 40. He later died of the disease on 4 December 1927 in Vienna. A street in Vienna was named after him in 1975; in honour of Count Kolowrat, it bears the name Kolowratgasse. Posthumously, the Count returned to the silver screen in 1956 in Alfréd Radok’s ‘Grandpa Automobile’, based on the book by Adolf Branald.
ŠKODA has been successful in motorsport for the past 115 years. Narcis Podsedníček kick started the company’s racing history, participating in the Paris-Berlin race in June 1901 on a Laurin & Klement motorcycle. Be it on the racing track or in rallies, ŠKODA has celebrated title wins throughout the world. Historical highlights include multiple title wins in the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC), the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), as well as the victory in the European Touring Car Championship in 1981. ŠKODA has also triumphed in the oldest and most famous rally in the world: ŠKODA rally cars have won several class titles in the legendary Monte Carlo, which has been held since 1911.

Nowadays, ŠKODA continues this proud racing tradition with the ŠKODA Fabia R5 rally car. Immediately after the first season with this car, factory team Pontus Tidemand/Emil Axelsson (S/S) scored the fourth APRC championship title in a row for ŠKODA. The Fabia R5 has also won a further five national titles for the brand. In 2016, the factory driver teams Pontus Tidemand / Jonas Andersson (S/S), Jan Kopecký / Pavel Dresler and Esapekka Lappi / Janne Ferm (FIN / FIN) will be competing in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC 2) with the ŠKODA Fabia R5.

ŠKODA VisionS: SUV Design Study Celebrates Premiere in Geneva

› Outlook: ŠKODA VisionS shows the future of ŠKODA’s SUV portfolio
› Presence: Modern, powerful, expressive design language
› Extremely spacious: Now with three rows of seats and a total length of 4.70 m

Mladá Boleslav, 2 February 2016 – ŠKODA communicates their new, modern design language in the SUV segment. The brand will be showcasing their new show car – the ŠKODA VisionS – at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, hinting at how ŠKODA’s future SUV could look. The design represents a good balance of aesthetics, power and functionality. Over recent years, ŠKODA has completely renewed and expanded their model range. The next phase will involve broadening the range of models in the SUV segment.

ŠKODA unveiled their new design language in 2014 with the VisionC design study. The brand is now transferring this to the SUV segment. The VisionS (‘S’ stands for SUV) shows how the brand’s future SUV, which will be larger than the successful ŠKODA Yeti, could look: with a length of 4.70 meters and a width of 1.91 meters, the 1.68-meter-high show car creates an instant presence on the road. Inside, the brand has recreated their classic large interior that has made the brand popular: ŠKODA’s VisionS features three rows of seats, offering a generous amount of room for six passengers.

The exterior design of the ŠKODA VisionS reflects the brand’s new emotional appeal: All the edges and lines are clear, precise and sharp; crystalline design elements accentuate the exterior. The interplay of light and shadow creates powerful effects on the strikingly chiselled surfaces.

The bonnet relies on the creative use of plastics, with contours flowing towards the brand logo. The wide grille and four tapered, high-set LED headlights characterize the face of the show car, emphasizing the vehicle’s SUV character. The logo and the vertical struts in the grill are characterized by crystalline elements – ŠKODA’s tribute to the Czech art of crystal-glass design.

The side view also illustrates the strong SUV character of ŠKODA’s VisionS. The sharp tornado line spans the entire length of the powerful car body. The wheel arches are angular, emphasizing the off-road character. The upper-shoulder contour forms a deep groove over the sills. The quickly sloping roofline with the long spoiler and drawn-in rear visually accelerate the show car even when stationary.

The rear of ŠKODA’s VisionS has been sculpturally designed. A strong diffuser insert borders the large exhaust pipes, giving the large SUV a visually powerful stance on the road. The ŠKODA logo and shallow rear lights with dynamically cut crystalline housings sit just beneath the low rear window. The C-graphic – characteristic of ŠKODA, beginning at the rear lights – runs into the flat reflectors in the bumper.

ŠKODA Superb among Finalists for Renowned Car Prize

› ŠKODA Superb on the ‘Car of the Year 2016’ (COTY) shortlist and selected for ‘World Car of the Year 2016’ (WCOTY)
› ŠKODA flagship inspires expert jury with emotive design, space and superior technology
› Search for the best vehicles enters decisive phase

Mladá Boleslav, 12 February 2016 – Great success for the new ŠKODA Superb: The brand’s flagship has been shortlisted for both ‘Car of the Year (COTY) 2016’ and ‘World Car of the Year 2016’ (WCOTY). Both awards are among the most coveted international awards in the automotive industry.

With its expressive design, superior technology and the most space in its class, ŠKODA’s completely redesigned flagship is setting standards in its segment. In addition, the brand’s top model has reached a new level in terms of safety, comfort, connectivity and the environment, moving to the upper end of the automotive mid-class. The new ŠKODA Superb has been available on the European market since last June, and was released on the Chinese market in the October and now will enter to India market. The estate version of the newcomer has been available from dealerships since September 2015. Its annual worldwide sales in January grew by 62,3 percent, in Western Europe sales increase even by 104.5 percent.

The search for the best vehicles is entering a crucial phase: The new ŠKODA Superb is one of ten finalists for the 'World Car of the Year 2016'. This year’s jury comprises 73 expert journalists from 23 countries. The top three finalists will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show in early March 2016. The winners in each category will be named at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) in April.

The seven finalists for 'Car of the Year' have also been announced. The jury chose their favourites from 35 recent market launches in the European automotive industry. On the eve of the Geneva Motor Show 2016, the best newcomer of the year will be presented with the longest-running and most important award in the automotive industry. Before the ceremony, the jury, consisting of 58 automobile experts from 22 countries, will have put the seven finalists through their paces. This will involve the experts evaluating all the models in terms of design, innovation, quality and value for money.

The ŠKODA Superb has received positive feedback and various prestigious awards over recent months. Last September, the top model was awarded 'Best of Best' in the category 'Exterior Volume Brand' in the 'Automotive Brand Contest 2015' thanks to its precise, expressive and emotive design. This was the final vote from the panellists in the German Design Council. The British magazine ‘What Car?’ evaluated the ŠKODA Superb Combi under the title “Best Estate Car of 2016“.

Geneva Motor Show: ŠKODA Electrifies with New Study

› Highlight at Lac Léman: Design study ‘ŠKODA VisionS’ gives an insight into future SUV models
› Plug-in-hybrid drive with high efficiency
› Emotive design study demonstrates evolution of ŠKODA design language
› Generous interior with three rows of seats, and a total length of 4.70 m
› New production models: Power package ŠKODA Octavia RS 4×4 and ŠKODA Fabia Combi Scout Line celebrate motor show premiere
› CNG campaign continues: ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC now available with DSG transmission

Mladá Boleslav, 17 February 2016 – ŠKODA continues to grow: Over recent years, the brand has fundamentally expanded and renewed their model range. The SUV range is now also being strengthened. With the ŠKODA VisionS, the Czech car manufacturer gives an insight into how ŠKODA’s future SUV design language might look. The brand also presents their most important future technologies with the show car. The new ŠKODA Octavia RS 4×4, the ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC with DSG transmission and the ScoutLine version of the Fabia Combi round off ŠKODA’s appearance at Lac Léman.

The ŠKODA VisionS incorporates the brand’s new design language, carrying it over into the SUV segment: the design is clearly influenced by Czech Cubism and the tradition of Bohemian crystal art. The lines are precise, sharp and clean-cut; the distinctive interplay of light and shadow on the contoured surfaces creates exciting effects, which are accentuated by the Island-Green color.
With a 2.79-meter wheelbase, at 4.70 meters long, 1.91 meters wide and 1.68 meters tall, the ŠKODA VisionS makes a bold statement on the road. Based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), this is ŠKODA’s first vehicle to feature six seats across three rows.

Another highlight of the concept vehicle is its plug-in hybrid drive: with 165 kW (225 hp), the show car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds with a top speed of almost 200 km/h. 1.9 litres of petrol is all the car needs to travel 100 km (45 grams CO2 per kilometre). The ŠKODA VisionS can go up to 50 km on electric alone, and will travel up to 1000 km with both systems combined.

The internal combustion engine is a 1.4 TSI with 115 kW (156 hp) and 250 Nm of torque. This works alongside an e-motor that provides 40 kW of continuous power and 220 Nm peak torque. It is integrated into the six-speed DSG, which directs the power to the front wheels. A second electric motor with up to 85 kW and 270 Nm of torque drives the rear axle. This works independently of the front axle drive, meaning the show car has a smart four-wheel drive, which requires no mechanical coupling. The three engines cooperate in a highly flexible manner: The driver of the ŠKODA VisionS can choose between several modes of operation – from purely electric drive to charge modes, always with the goal of maximum efficiency. The lithium-ion battery with a 12.4kWh capacity is positioned in front of the rear axle.

ŠKODA has responded to the rapidly growing scope of information and the passengers’ desire to communicate by introducing automotive digital networking (mobile services), providing large displays for optimum vehicle and infotainment services for all passengers, who can connect to the network several ways from each seat in the vehicle.

The ŠKODA Octavia RS 4×4 will also be celebrating its debut at this year’s motor show: ŠKODA’s top-of-the-range Octavia is available as a saloon or estate with the 2.0 TDI engine with 135 kW (184 PS) and DSG transmission. With a drive unit, which is both sporty and safe, the Octavia RS 4×4 makes a strong partner for families, work and leisure. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 228 km/h. In NEDC, the model will manage 4.9 litre diesel per 100 km; CO2 equivalent of 129 grams per km (all values for sedan).

The ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC is particularly economical: It currently costs less than four euros in fuel to drive this model 100 km. On request, ŠKODA can fit the natural-gas car with DSG transmission. The 1.4 TSI provides 81 kW (110 hp) per km, emits less than 100 grams of CO2. The ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC is available in saloon and estate versions.
ŠKODA’s ScoutLine range also continues to grow. Alongside the Rapid Spaceback ScoutLine, there is now the ŠKODA Fabia Combi ScoutLine – with its unique off-road look and attractive, practical equipment features. Three petrol engines with 55 kW (75 hp), 66 kW (90 hp) and 81 kW (110 hp) and three diesel engines with 55 kW (75 hp), 66 kW (90 hp) and 77 kW (105 hp) are available.

ŠKODA Vrchlabí Plant Produces One Million DQ 200 Gearboxes
18.2.2016 | category: Events

› ŠKODA manufactures one million dual-clutch gearboxes since October 2012
› Daily capacity of 2000 DSG transmissions; 245 million euros invested
› Vrchlabí plant awarded European prize ‘Factory of the Year’

Mladá Boleslav/Vrchlabí, 18 February 2016 –ŠKODA’s Vrchlabí plant has produced the millionth DQ 200 dual-clutch gearbox since production began in 2012. The modern direct shift gearbox is used in ŠKODA cars as well as vehicles produced by Volkswagen Group.

“Manufacturing one million DSG transmissions highlights the capabilities of our staff at the Vrchlabí plant, and marks another milestone in ŠKODA’s component production in the Czech Republic,” says ŠKODA Board Member for Production Michael Oeljeklaus, adding: “The state-of-the-art DQ 200 dual clutch transmission, which is manufactured by the local ŠKODA team, is of great strategic importance to the entire Volkswagen Group.”

Vrchlabí was transformed from a vehicle-manufacturing plant to a component-production site in 2012. New factory building was built and the existing production halls were modernized within 18 months. Last year, the Vrchlabí plant was awarded ‘Factory of the Year’ for the quick preparation of DQ 200 production and the dynamic development of the site. The prize is one of the most prestigious awards for the manufacturing industry in Europe.

“In preparing for DQ 200 production, ŠKODA and the Volkswagen Group invested a total of 245 million euros into reconstructing the production halls, acquiring technical equipment, building the Training Centre for gear production, and logistics. “In recent years, the Vrchlabí plant has evolved into a high-tech location,” says Head of ŠKODA Component Manufacturing, Frank Engel.

ŠKODA’s Vrchlabí plant, with around 1000 staff, is one of the most important employers in the Hradec Králové region. The production capacity for DSG gearboxes is set to increase this year to 2000 units per day.

In addition to gearbox production at Vrchlabí, the transmissions MQ 200 and MQ/SQ 100 run off the production lines at the main factory in Mladá Boleslav. To date, more than seven million of them have been produced there – around six million MQ 200 transmissions and more than one million MQ-100. This mechanical gearbox is also used in ŠKODA cars, as well as other brands within the Volkswagen Group. Currently, around 700 people are employed in gearbox manufacturing at the Mladá Boleslav plant.

Selected milestones in ŠKODA AUTO gearbox production:

02/2016: 1 million DQ 200 from Vrchlabí plant
12/2015: 6 million MQ 200 from Mladá Boleslav plant

Wireless Charging: The ŠKODA Phonebox
› ŠKODA expands their range of modern infotainment devices
› Phonebox charges your Smartphone using the Qi wireless standard
› Technology featured in ŠKODA Octavia and ŠKODA Superb from spring 2016

Mladá Boleslav, 19 February 2016 – ŠKODA is expanding their range of state-of-the-art infotainment devices: From April 2016, customers purchasing a Superb or Octavia will be able to opt for ‘Phonebox with wireless charging’. This technology charges compatible smartphones inductively according to the Qi standard.

The Phonebox with wireless charging is an upgrade to the Phonebox, which is already available for the ŠKODA Superb and ŠKODA Octavia. The technological centrepiece is a planar array, communicating with the smartphone via near-field coupling and transmitting signals to the car antenna. The Phonebox combines good voice quality and high connection security with convenient operation.

In spring 2016, Phonebox with wireless charging will be available for the Superb and Octavia model series, which the brand will be displaying at the Geneva Motor Show. This technology charges compatible smartphones inductively according to the Qi standard. The current flows wirelessly from a coil in the bottom of the Phonebox with wireless charging to a receiver coil in the phone; data is also transferred between the transmitter and receiver to ensure optimum energy transfer. The mobile phone remains fully operational during charging.

Many smartphones by Google, Blackberry, LG, Nokia, Microsoft, Samsung and Sony already feature Qi technology. Other devices, such as the iPhone can be charged wirelessly using specially designed cases.

Wireless data flow from smartphone: ŠKODA presents Wireless MirrorLink

› Smartphone transmits content wirelessly to the infotainment system
› New technology debuts at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
› Presentation at co-developer RealVNC’s stand

Mladá Boleslav/Barcelona, 22 February 2016 – ŠKODA enhances car-smartphone networking: the brand is presenting their new Wireless MirrorLink prototype technology, developed in partnership with RealVNC, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The system transfers content wirelessly from the phone to the infotainment system.

Nowadays, almost all ŠKODA models – from the Fabia to the Superb – feature the optional MirrorLink technology, which is widely supported on Android OS handsets, and is compatible with smart devices made by Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC and others. ŠKODA has integrated this technology into the SmartLink package, which also includes Android Auto and Apple Car Play. The connection between the smartphone and the ŠKODA infotainment system (from Bolero upwards) is currently via a cable.

ŠKODA is now introducing their new Wireless MirrorLink technology at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), which takes place in Barcelona from 22 to 25 February 2016. The wireless connection from the handset to the ŠKODA infotainment system has been developed by ŠKODA in cooperation with TechniSat and RealVNC. Wireless MirrorLink transfers data via Wi-Fi not a cable. The phone can either be left in a pocket or placed in the new ‘Phonebox’ dock with inductive charging that ŠKODA will soon be releasing.

MirrorLink can turn a smartphone into a cutting-edge media server, transferring stored music and a range of approved apps to the touch screen, including Internet services, such as web radio, weather, audiobooks, navigation and parking information. ŠKODA custom-designed MirrorLink apps, including ŠKODA MFA Pro and ŠKODA Drive are also available. The driver can access the apps via the touch screen, and the on-board audio system manages the sound output.

The prototype to the future Wireless MirrorLink technology will be presented at the MWC at RealVNC’s stand. Alongside TechniSat, RealVNC is a driving force behind MirrorLink and is a member of the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), which seeks to establish MirrorLink as a global standard. ŠKODA is also working closely with the CCC.

ŠKODA at the Geneva Motor Show 2016 - Press Kit

› Highlight at Lake Geneva: ŠKODA VisionS design study gives an insight into future SUV models
› With highly efficient plug-in hybrid drive system
› Emotive design study demonstrates the evolution of ŠKODA’s design language
› Generous interior typical of ŠKODA with three rows of seats, and a total length of 4.70 m
› New production models: the power pack ŠKODA Octavia RS 4×4 and the ŠKODA Fabia Combi ScoutLine celebrate their motor show premiere
› CNG campaign continues: ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC now available with DSG transmission

Mladá Boleslav/Geneva, 29 February 2016 – ŠKODA continues its dynamic growth strategy: over recent years, the brand has fundamentally updated and expanded its model range. The SUV range is now also being extended. With the ŠKODA VisionS at the Geneva Motor Show, the Czech car manufacturer gives an insight into what ŠKODA’s future SUV design language might look like. The brand is also presenting their most important future technologies with the show car. The new ŠKODA Octavia RS 4×4, the ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC with DSG transmission and the ScoutLine version of the Fabia Combi round off ŠKODA’s appearance at Lake Geneva.

“Our brand continues to develop at a rapid pace,” said ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “We already have a successful model in the compact SUV segment with the ŠKODA Yeti; now we are using our expertise in 4×4 technology to develop the new SUV model. In terms of design, package and functionality, the VisionS bears some similarity. This study also demonstrates our most important future technologies, such as the plug-in hybrid drive system; a similar drive system is also being tested for production cars.”

The ŠKODA VisionS incorporates the brand’s new design language, carrying it over into the SUV segment: the design is clearly influenced by cubism and the tradition of Bohemian crystal glass art. The lines are precise, sharp and clean-cut; the distinctive interplay of light and shadow on the contoured surfaces has a powerful effect, which is accentuated by the Iceland Green colour.

At 4.70 metres long, 1.91 metres wide, 1.68 meters tall and with a 2.79-metre wheelbase, the ŠKODA VisionS makes a bold statement on the road. Based on Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), this is ŠKODA’s first vehicle to feature six seats across three rows.

Another highlight of the concept vehicle is its plug-in hybrid drive: with 165 kW (225 PS), the show car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, and has a top speed of almost 200 km/h. 1.9 l of petrol is all the car needs to travel 100 km (45 g CO2/km). The ŠKODA VisionS can drive up to 50 km on electric mode alone, and travels up to 1,000 km with both systems combined.

The internal combustion engine is a 1.4 TSI with 115 kW (156 PS) and 250 Nm of torque. It works alongside an e-motor that provides 40 kW of continuous power and a peak torque of 220 Nm. The e-motor is integrated with the six-speed DSG, which transfers the power to the front wheels. A second electric engine with up to 85 kW and 270 Nm of torque drives the rear axle. This works independently from the front axle drive, meaning the show car has clever four-wheel drive, which requires no mechanical coupling. The three engines cooperate in a highly flexible manner: the driver of the ŠKODA VisionS can choose between several modes of operation – from the purely electric engine to charge mode, always with the goal of maximum efficiency. The lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 12.4 kWh is positioned in front of the rear axle.

ŠKODA has responded to the rapidly growing range of information and the passengers’ desire to communicate by introducing automotive digital networking (mobile services), providing large displays for optimum vehicle and infotainment services for all passengers, who can connect to the network in several ways from each seat in the vehicle.

The ŠKODA Octavia RS 4×4 is also celebrating its debut at this year’s motor show: ŠKODA’s top-of-the-range Octavia is available as both a hatchback and an estate with a 2.0 TDI engine producing 135 kW (184 PS) and DSG transmission. With its equally sporty and safe drive unit, the Octavia RS 4×4 makes a strong partner for families, work and leisure time. The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 228 km/h. It consumes just 4.9 l of diesel per 100 km, which is a CO2 equivalent of 129 g/km (all values for the hatchback).

The ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC is particularly economical: its fuel costs are currently below four euros per 100 km. As an optional extra, ŠKODA now also equips the natural-gas car with DSG transmission. The 1.4 TSI provides 81 kW (110 PS), emitting 94 g of CO2/km. The ŠKODA Octavia G-TEC is available as a hatchback or an estate.

ŠKODA’s ScoutLine range also continues to grow. Alongside the Rapid Spaceback ScoutLine, there is now also the ŠKODA Fabia Combi ScoutLine – with its unique offroad look and attractive, practical specification features. Three petrol engines with 55 kW (75 PS), 66 kW (90 PS) and 81 kW (110 PS) and three diesel engines with 55 kW (75 PS), 66 kW (90 PS) and 77 kW (105 PS) are available.

Cult Car ŠKODA 1000 MBX Celebrates 50 Years

› The elegant two-door ŠKODA 1000 MBX celebrates its debut half a century ago
› Construction of MBX version based on popular classic ŠKODA 1000 MB
› Brand produced total of 2517 ŠKODA 1000 MBX; more than half exported

Mladá Boleslav, 8 March 2016 – The ŠKODA 1000 MBX De Luxe turns 50. The elegant two-door celebrated its debut at the International Motor Show in Geneva in March 1966. The spacious five-seater with rear engine and rear wheel drive was launched into series production in the October of the same year. The model represented the pinnacle of the one-litre class in its day.
“The legendary two-door ŠKODA 1000 MBX with its liberally glazed body crowned the success of the first Czech large production car – the four-door ŠKODA 1000 MB,” says Andrea Frydlová, Head of the ŠKODA Museum. “This makes the vehicle an important milestone in ŠKODA’s history. The production figures increased significantly throughout the 1960s in Mladá Boleslav. Many progressive technologies in mass production caught on, including high pressure die-casting for cylinder and crank cases, as well as gearbox casing.”

The MBX was based on the mass-produced four-door ŠKODA 1000 MB, which boasted a modern monocoque body and the engine was installed behind the driven rear axle. ŠKODA built an entirely new plant in the immediate vicinity of the existing factory buildings in Mladá Boleslav for the construction of the ŠKODA 1000 MB at the beginning of the 1960s. The new production plant comprised modern facilities with more than 40 production halls and other buildings on the 80 hectare site.

The history of the two-door MBX dates back to 1960 when the two prototypes to the ŠKODA 990 Tudor were being built. The special bodywork with clearly negative-sloping rear pillars that flow into the panoramic rear window and two doors with frameless windows was created at the Kvasiny plant. The body shell retained the generous space of the original notchback with an enhanced side view. It was not only the driver and front passenger that could wind down the door windows, but also the passengers in the back could open the small windows in the rear. In addition, the triangular-shaped fold-out doors improved the ventilation in the interior.

The ŠKODA 1000 MBX De Luxe was first presented to the public at the opening of the Geneva Motor Show on 10 March 1966. The model delighted the visitors with the originality of its shape. The two-door gave the impression of not having a central pillar with its extensively glazed surfaces. In fact, the centre pillar ended in the middle of the vehicle body under the window line, and its narrower upper portion could be rolled down together with the rear side windows. At this moment, the occupants could enjoy brilliant views and an exceptionally airy and spacious interior.

The ŠKODA 1000 MB and the two-door MBX set standards in innovative engine and drive technology. In terms of engine manufacturing, ŠKODA was the first European producer ever to incorporate the aluminium die-casting process in cylinder-block production. The four-speed transmission case was also produced using this construction method. Thus, ŠKODA built on a process originally devised in 1922 by Czech engineer Josef Polák, the main advantage being significantly shorter production times.

The ŠKODA 1000 MBX was powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 988 cm3 and an output of 38 kW (52 hp) at 5000/min. With an unladen weight of 815 kg and a load capacity of 375 kg, the automobile reached a top speed of 127 km/h. The fuel consumption was 7.8-8.0 litres of petrol per 100 km. The car was fitted with two Jikov carburettors as standard; an engine with a single carburettor was only installed in a few dozen units. The time-consuming assembly of the ŠKODA 1000 MBX, demanding a lot of manual labour, began in October 1966 in the standalone operation section of the Mladá Boleslav plant, so as not to slow down the main production line. The last twelve MBX models of the total 1403 of the one-litre version rolled off the production line in early 1968.

In November 1967, the brand’s range was extended to include the dynamic 1100 MBX De Luxe version. The engine output remained unchanged with a displacement of 1107 cm3, the advantage being the better lugging capability – 81.4 n.m compared to the original 75.5 n.m. Further improvements included a more powerful oil pump and more efficient cooling. 1114 of the stronger version had been produced by 1969, giving a total of 2517 MBX two-door units. Despite the relatively low production volume compared to the mass-produced four-door 1000 MB (443,156 units), this version made a significant contribution to the popularization of the ŠKODA brand in many discerning foreign markets. Today, the model is among the most sought after and highly valued vintage cars with significant appreciation in value. The legendary Coupé ŠKODA 110 R (1970-1980), followed by the ŠKODA models Garde and Rapid, continued the success of the attractive two-door MBX version.

ŠKODA Plant Receives ‘Factory of the Year’ Award’ Produced in Vrchlabí

› ŠKODA’s Vrchlabí production location receives award from trade journal ‘Produktion’ and A.T. Kearney management consultancy
› Expert jury commends successful transformation of ŠKODA’s Vrchlabí plant from vehicle assembly to modern gear production facility
› Volkswagen Group and ŠKODA have so far invested 245 million Euros into transmission production at Vrchlabí

Mladá Boleslav/Ulm, 9 March 2016 – ŠKODA’s Vrchlabí plant has received the ‘Factory of the Year’ award. The prize was presented on 1 March 2016 in Ulm (Baden-Württemberg, Germany). The quick and successful transformation of the production plant in Vrchlabí from a vehicle assembly to component production facility was decisive in the jury’s decision to award ŠKODA’s Vrchlabí plant with the ‘Factory of the Year’ award in the category ‘Outstanding Location Development’.

“Receiving this award makes us very proud, and it is a great acknowledgment of the outstanding work of the entire team,” says ŠKODA Board Member for Production Michael Oeljeklaus, adding “In a joint effort among the employees, trade union and the company, we have transformed Vrchlabí over recent years into a high-tech location for gearbox manufacturing, thereby securing the future of the site.”

ŠKODA won out against the completion, receiving first place in the category ‘Outstanding Location Development’. The plant was evaluated on the following criteria: value appreciation, customer satisfaction, quality, innovation and efficiency. In their statement, the jury of leading representatives from industry and research praised ŠKODA for quickly and successfully transforming the Vrchlabí plant from a vehicle assembly plant to component production facility.

“The award is a great tribute to the entire ŠKODA team who successfully implemented the location’s transformation process through their commitment, competence and great flexibility,” said Frank Engel, Head of Component production, at the award ceremony in Ulm.

The ‘Factory of the Year’ award is one of the most prestigious competitions for the manufacturing industry in Europe, and has been organised by the trade journal ‘Produktion’ and consultancy firm A.T. Kearney since 1992. From any industry, manufacturing companies with more than 100 employees can be entered into the ‘Factory of the Year’ competition.

The Volkswagen Group awarded Vrchlabí the contract for DQ 200 production in early 2011. The first DQ 200 gearboxes ran off the production lines there in October 2012. ŠKODA has invested around €245 million into the local DSG production in partnership with the Volkswagen Group. The majority of that sum has gone into technical facilities and other areas, such as the Training Centre for transmission production, the logistics area, the Measuring Centre, laboratories and the Centre for Quality Analysis. New buildings have been constructed and existing facilities modernised at a cost of around €27 million.

ŠKODA is currently increasing the location’s production capacity. From April 2016, the daily manufacturing volume will increase from 1500 to 2000 DQ 200 gearboxes. The manufacturer will be investing a further €25 million into the expansion.  The production capacity had already increased from 1000 to 1500 DSG gearboxes per day in 2014.

The DQ 200 seven-speed direct shift gearbox manufactured in Vrchlabí is used in ŠKODA vehicles as well as models from other group brands, and is one of the most innovative automatic transmissions in the automotive industry.

A total of one million DQ 200 gearboxes have been produced at the Vrchlabí site to date. Approximately 1000 people are employed in gearbox production at Vrchlabí, making ŠKODA one of the largest and most important employers in the Hradec Králové region.
