Around the World Eighty Years Ago: ŠKODA RAPID‘s Trip Round the Globe
› On 1 August 1936 at 11.55 Břetislav Jan Procházka and Jindřich Kubias returned in their ŠKODA RAPID from trip round the world to Prague
› The ŠKODA RAPID drove 27,700km across 15 countries and three continents in 44 days
› In the 1930s spectacular long-distance trips put ŠKODA in the centre of attention, advertising the brand on global scale
› 1934 saw ŠKODA POPULAR complete 15,000 kilometres from Prague to Calcutta followed by 25,000km travel across Europe, USA and Mexico
› ŠKODA RAPID endured two-year-long African safari involving 52,000 kilometres in 1934
› New ŠKODA RAPID has continued success story since 2012
Mladá Boleslav, 1 August 2016 – 80 years have passed from the long-distance drive that led the ŠKODA RAPID and its crew around the world. On the 97-day trip involving 44 days of driving Břetislav Jan Procházka and Jindřich Kubias managed to drive 630 kilometres per day on average, demonstrating the exceptional robustness of the ŠKODA model. Long-distance travels of the ŠKODA RAPID and ŠKODA POPULAR stretching over 52,000 kilometres drew global attention.
"The world tour undertaken by Břetislav Jan Procházka and Jindřich Kubias demanded a great deal of the men and the car," explains Andrea Frydlová, Head of the ŠKODA Museums. "The success of the trip highlights the high performance and build quality of ŠKODA vehicles even at that time. With their trip around the globe in the 1930s, Procházka and Kubias made a significant contribution to making the ŠKODA brand popular worldwide."
The world tour began in Prague on 25 April 1936. The 27,700km ŠKODA RAPID expedition was led by the Prague entrepreneur Břetislav Jan Procházka (1897-1971). In the co-pilot’s seat was Jindřich Kubias (1909-1967). During their adventure the duo put their trust in a slightly adjusted ŠKODA RAPID with central tube frame equipped with a 1.4l and 23kW (31 HP) four-cylinder.
The car boasted independent wheel suspension and even hydraulic brakes. It proved to be the right choice also off the road, with most of the road network consisting of gravel tracks back then. The round-the-world trip took 97 days in total, out of which 53 days were taken up by ship transport and customs proceedings.
After the start in Czechoslovakia Procházka and Kubias drove through Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia and further to the former Soviet Union. Following the stage from Moscow to Baku, Azerbaijan, the ŠKODA RAPID took a day of rest in the Russian city of Kaluga. Today the new ŠKODA RAPID, a grandson of the globe-trotting model, rolls down the assembly line in the ŠKODA plant there.
After sailing over the Caspian Sea the RAPID crossed Iran, where the crew had to endure a sandstorm. The resulting time loss forced Prcoházka and Kubias to complete the stretch from Quetta, Pakistan, to Mumbai in three days, so that they would not miss the ferry from India to Sri Lanka. Having driven through Malaysia and Singapore they were taken aboard a ship via Hongkong and Shanghai to Kobe, Japan. Passing through Honolulu the pair reached San Francisco. After 5,300 kilometres, 100 hours and 55 minutes they finally conquered the Big Apple, breaking the current record by more than nine hours. The last stage took them from the French city of Cherbourg to France and further via Paris and Nuremberg to Prague.

52,000 kilometres across Africa in ŠKODA RAPID
As early as 1934, the ŠKODA POPULAR completed the 15,000 km journey from Prague to Calcutta. The travels of František Alexander Elstner (1902-1974) and his wife Eva were also legendary. They managed to cover the 25,000 kilometres across the USA, Mexico and Spain in their ŠKODA POPULAR 1.0l SV with 16kW (21 hp) engine between February and May 1936. Two years later, the couple drove a ŠKODA POPULAR 1100 OHV, which had 22 kW (30 PS), approximately 6,000 kilometers across Argentina to Buenos Aires in only twelve days.
In June 1936 Stanislav Škulina (1908-1961) and his wife Maria in their ŠKODA RAPID saloon set off on a two-year-long trip around Africa, which eventually stretched over 52,000 kilometres from Dakar to the Equator and further to Johannesburg in South Africa. After service stop at the local ŠKODA dealer they continued to the Cape of Good Hope and returned back to Prague via Egypt and the Mediterranean, where their ŠKODA RAPID arrived on 18 May 1938.
New ŠKODA RAPID continues the success story
With the new ŠKODA RAPID the Czech car manufacturer introduced the current generation of the production line in 2012. As the first model fully embodying the new ŠKODA brand design language, the saloon was followed by a hatchback, the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK, in 2013. Both varieties have enjoyed popularity world-wide; in the first half of 2016 more than 102,600 ŠKODA RAPIDs were delivered to the customers. Apart from the production in the main plant in Mladá Boleslav, the RAPID also rolls down the line in Yizheng (China), Kaluga (Russia) and Pune (India).

ŠKODA receives award for eco-friendly logistics innovation
› Czech Packaging Association SYBA dignify prestigious award for ŠKODA AUTO’s innovative transport solution with 'Packaging of the Year 2016' award in automotive category
› Clever 4-in-1 packaging solution utilizes container space efficiently
› Reduced freight traffic from Czech Republic to India reduces transport-related CO2 emissions by a quarter
› New 'Green Logistics' measure is part of ŠKODA AUTO’s 'Green Future' environmental strategy
Mladá Boleslav, 4 August 2016 – ŠKODA AUTO has been presented with the ‘Packaging of the year 2016’ award for their resource-efficient transport solution. The judges from the Czech Packaging Association SYBA chose ŠKODA AUTO’s innovative logistics technology for best concept in the automotive category. Thanks to purpose-built wooden constructions, four instead of the previous three body shells in addition to production parts can be transported in a single container. This means ŠKODA AUTO has reduced CO2 emissions in transit between the Czech Republic and India by a quarter. This ‘Green Logistics’ concept is part of ŠKODA AUTO’s 'Green Future' environmental protection strategy.
“At ŠKODA we are constantly working on ways to make the logistics more efficient and therefore more environmentally friendly,” says Jiří Cee, Head of Brand Logistics at ŠKODA AUTO. “The area of logistics is fully committed to the objectives of the 'Green Future' sustainable development strategy. Our new 4-in-1 transport solution is an important step in achieving our ambitious environmental targets.”
ŠKODA AUTO has developed an innovative 4-in-1 packaging system in cooperation with the packaging supplier company Pilous for shipping painted bodies from the main plant in Mladá Boleslav to the Indian plant in Aurangabad. The Czech automobile manufacturer uses novel wooden constructions, specially made for each model series, to optimize the use of the cargo space in a container. The clever carrier systems arrange two bodies horizontally on the floor and two others diagonally above in the limited space. Manufacturing parts can also be fitted into appropriate gaps in the wooden construction and secured for transport.
The 4-in-1-loading technology reduces the number of containers by a quarter. This saves ŠKODA AUTO well over 800 tonnes of CO2 per year on the 13,270-kilometre transport route. Nearly all materials used can be recycled.
Resource-efficient logistics solutions have a tradition at ŠKODA AUTO: the Mladá Boleslav car manufacturer was using recyclable wooden constructions for container transport as early as 2000 and progressively developed this technology. Before the millennium, two vehicles were sent to India in each container; by 2006, there were three body shells, including all hardware needed for the final product. Further advancements and comprehensive field tests have since enabled ŠKODA AUTO to implement their 4-in-1 transport system.
This even greener logistics solution has now received an award from the Czech Packaging Association SYBA. From the many proposals submitted in the automotive category, the jury selected ŠKODA’s 4-in-1 container system for 'Packaging of the Year 2016'. The official award ceremony takes place on 3 November at the SpeedCHAIN conference in Prague.
ŠKODA AUTO bundles all their environmental activities under the umbrella of the 'GreenFuture' strategy that rests on three pillars: ‘Green Product’ is concerned with the development of environmentally sound vehicles – both in terms of fuel consumption, and recycling capabilities. The brand supports their dealerships with 'Green Retail' and servicing garages in environmentally friendly economies. 'Green Factory' is primarily concerned with running as resource-efficient production as possible. This pillar also includes the field of 'Green Logistics' for sustainable logistics solutions.

ŠKODA’s growth continues in July
› ŠKODA delivered 83,700 vehicles in July (2015: 82,800); up 1.0%
› Surge in unit sales in China (up 16.1%) and Russia (up 11.6 %)
› Third-generation ŠKODA SUPERB sales increase significantly (up 92.7%)
› New SUV model ŠKODA KODIAQ world premiere on 1 September in Berlin
› Werner Eichhorn: “Young model range appeals to new consumer groups”
Mladá Boleslav, 10 August 2016 – ŠKODA delivered 83,700 vehicles to customers worldwide this July (July 2015: 82,800 vehicles). This corresponds to a growth of 1.0% over the same period last year. The traditional Czech manufacturer made significant gains, particularly in China (up 16.1%) and Russia (up 11.6%). The ŠKODA SUPERB continues to enjoy great popularity, with sales increasing 92.7% over last year.
“ŠKODA’s growth has also continued in July,” says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “Across all markets, we see that our young model range is appealing increasingly to new consumer groups.” ŠKODA will be consistently expanding their model range over the coming years. In this context, the brand will be strengthening their position in the important SUV segment. The ŠKODA KODIAQ – a new large SUV model above the ŠKODA YETI – will be celebrating its world premiere on 1 September in Berlin; the market launch is set for February 2017.
In Western Europe, delivering 32,700 vehicles, ŠKODA recorded a sales decline of 8.7% in July as expected. This development was mainly due to the break in production at the Czech plants during the three-week factory holiday (4 July to 22 July). In Germany 10,500 customers received their new ŠKODA in July (down 19.7% compared to July 2015). The brand recorded double-digit growth in July in Italy (1,600 vehicles; up 11.0%), Finland (900 vehicles; up 23.1%) and the UK (6,100 vehicles; up 12.5%).
In Central Europe ŠKODA’s July sales were down slightly on last year’s figures with 13,900 delivered (down 4.2%). Here too, the holiday-related break in production at the Czech plants had an expected influence on the sales development. In the brand’s home market, 7,100 customers received their new ŠKODA (down 8.1%). ŠKODA had a positive July, however, in Croatia (July 2016: 300 vehicles; up 45.6%), Hungary (July 2016: 900 vehicles; up 4.5%) and Slovenia (July 2016: 500 vehicles; up 9.6 %).
In Eastern Europe, excluding Russia ŠKODA’s deliveries to customers in July increased 11.2% to 3,100 cars (2015: 2,800 cars). During the same period, ŠKODA’s models enjoyed increasing demand in Russia: Sales volumes increased 11.6% to 4,700 vehicles (July 2015: 4200 vehicles).
Thanks to a completely revised model range, sales in July developed particularly positively in Turkey and Israel; compared to July 2015, deliveries to customers climbed 22.8% to 2,200 vehicles (July 2015: 1,800 vehicles) and 45.8% to 2,700 vehicles (July 2015: 1,800 vehicles) respectively. ŠKODA gained significant market shares in both countries in contrast to the market trend (Turkey: down 29%; Israel: down 11.9%).
In the brand’s strongest global market, China, ŠKODA recorded a significant sales increase compared to the same month last year: Deliveries to customers rose substantially by 16.1% to 21,400 vehicles (July 2015: 18,400 vehicles).
ŠKODA deliveries to customers in July 2016 (in units, rounded off, listed by model; +/- in % compared to July 2015):
ŠKODA CITIGO (sold only in Europe: 3,400; -1.7 %)
ŠKODA FABIA (15,500; -13.4 %)
ŠKODA RAPID (16,100; +16.8 %)
ŠKODA OCTAVIA (32,200; -5.7 %)
ŠKODA SUPERB (9,500; +92.7 %)
ŠKODA YETI (7,000; -11.1 %)

Aerodynamic finesse: ŠKODA supports Olympic track cyclist
› ŠKODA supports Czech Olympic cyclist Pavel Kelemen with aerodynamic know-how gained from car manufacturing
› 150 high-definition cameras produce a 3D image of the athlete, CFD simulation makes the smallest air currents visible
› Video on the ŠKODA web portal WeLoveCycling.com shows exciting details and lets you see behind the scenes
Mladá Boleslav, 11 August 2016 – At the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, professional cyclist Pavel Kelemen is racing in two track cycling events for a place on the podium. The 25-year-old Czech is benefiting from ŠKODA’s extensive technological know-how. With the help of the latest airflow research and modern camera technology, which is usually only used in the development of vehicle prototypes, the experts at ŠKODA analysed the aerodynamics of the Olympic athlete and his bicycle. An elaborate 3D model and the CFD simulation generated from it accurately display all wind currents that develop around Kelemen and his bike as he rides. Thanks to this cutting-edge transfer of technology, the athlete receives the perfect finishing touch, particularly in regards to his posture.
In the fight for Olympic medals, the difference between victory and defeat in track cycling can be as little as a few tenths of a second. Similar to motorsport, best possible aerodynamics plays a crucial role. As well as training hard, the professionals therefore also rely on aerodynamic fine-tuning these days: the lower the air resistance of the athlete and bicycle, the greater the chance of finishing in a top position.
Thanks to the support of ŠKODA, official partner of the Czech Olympic Committee, talented Czech cyclist Pavel Kelemen was able to make use of the latest flow research findings in his preparation for the Olympic Games in Rio. At first, the athlete and his bike were “scanned”: with the help of 150 high-definition cameras, the aerodynamics experts at ŠKODA then created a three-dimensional image of the cyclist on his bike. ŠKODA usually uses this technology in the strictest secrecy for the development of prototypes. Using the data obtained, the ŠKODA aerodynamics department produced a so-called CFD simulation which illustrates all wind currents to the smallest detail.
Together with Kelemen’s trainer, Petr Klimeš, the digital information was accurately evaluated and analysed. The result: thanks to small adjustments to posture, the professional cyclist can minimise or even prevent unfavourable airflow around the helmet, calves, shins and hips. The aerodynamic bike, which is already extremely well designed, has very little room for improvements. However, the experts had a useful tip up their sleeves to reduce the air vortex just around the wheel rims.
With this transfer of technology, ŠKODA takes its support as an engine of cycling to a new level.
The ŠKODA Vélo Family’s ‘home’ is the web portal WeLoveCycling.com, where visitors can read exciting background stories about people across the world, who all share a passion for cycling. With a video, WeLoveCycling.com takes a look behind the scenes of ŠKODA’s aerodynamic fine-tuning, which Pavel Kelemen aims to turn into a medal at the Olympic Games.
The 25-year-old is racing in the sprint at the Olympic track cycling event in Rio from 12 August. From 13 August, the young Czech is also fighting for the top positions in the keirin. In this race, which originates from Japan, up to eight cyclists start behind an electric motorcycle – the so-called derny. This consistently accelerates up to a speed of 50 km/h and leaves the track at a particular time. Only then does the race begin and the cyclists duel at speeds of up to 75 km/h in a fight for the title.
ŠKODA’s deep commitment to cycling
The special relationship between ŠKODA and the bicycle, which is how the car manufacturer’s story began, is also mirrored in ŠKODA’s support for cycling. In 1895 – more than 120 years ago – Václav Laurin and Václav Klement founded a bicycle factory in the Bohemian town of Mladá Boleslav, now the brand’s headquarters. Just ten years later, the Voiturette A was the first automobile to roll out of the young company’s workshop. In 1925, Laurin & Klement merged with ŠKODA.
Today, ŠKODA is committed as an ‘engine of cycling’ in many different ways, and was the official sponsor and vehicle partner of the Tour de France this year for the 13th time. In 2016, ŠKODA took centre stage for the second time as the partner of the green jersey, which is worn by the best sprinter. As in previous years, ŠKODA also supports the Spanish cycling tour (‘La Vuelta’).

ŠKODA brings 115 years of motorsport history to life at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix
› ŠKODA is sending more than 30 racing, rally and series cars from various eras to the vintage car event at the Nürburgring
› A treasure trove of cars from the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav: a 1100 OHC sports car and a Formula 3 race car are represented at the ring for the first time
› ‘Slowly Sideways’: seven-time German Rally Champion Matthias Kahle aims to wow fans with thrilling drifts
› As the official partner of the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix, ŠKODA will also offer spectators lots of action away from the race track – including a rally simulator
Mladá Boleslav, 12 August 2016 – ŠKODA is celebrating a major anniversary at the 44th AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix, which is taking place from 12-14 August 2016 at the Nürburgring – 115 years since its first race victory. At the great Oldtimer spectacle, several ŠKODA 130 RS cars are reminiscient of the glorious 1970s and 1980s. Two motorsport treasures from the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav are among a total of 36 ŠKODA vehicles that are travelling to the Eifel region.
115 years ago, Narcis Podsedníček finished first on the challenging rally from Paris to Berlin with his Laurin & Klement motorbike. It was the beginning of a great success story, which continued both on circuits and in rally sport. With a wide variety of attractive racing, rally and sports cars, ŠKODA is marking this anniversary at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix, which is taking place at the Nürburgring from 12th-14th August 2016. Two extremely rare gems will also be amongst them, and will be on the starting line for the first time at this event. In addition, fans can look forward to numerous other highlights from the company’s history.
“The ŠKODA 1100 OHC from 1957 is an impressive example of Czech engineering prowess and, at the same time, a significant milestone in ŠKODA’s 115-year motorsport history,” said Andrea Frydlová, Manager of the ŠKODA Museum. “When developing the two-seater, the engineers were given free rein and as a result created a sports car of the highest quality.” The same goes for the Formula 3 single-seater from 1965 – with this model, Miroslav Fousek won the Eastern European Formula 3 Championship in 1968.
In the ŠKODA 1100 OHC, a longitudinally mounted in-line four-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts and a cylinder capacity of 1,089 cm3 makes for a racy driving performance. The small powerhouse shines with an engine output per litre of 85 HP – an extraordinary figure for the time. The bodywork was also advanced, because it is made from very light fibreglass. The 92-HP car weighs just 550 kg.
In its day, the sporty two-seater sped ahead of the competition with powerful acceleration and a top speed of 200 km/h. In 1958, Czech racing driver Miroslav Fousek took victory in Mladá Boleslav when competing in the new sports car for the first time. Further victories followed at local race events.
From the brand’s long and successful history in motorsport, ŠKODA also shows the legendary rally cars from the 1970s and 80s. A prime example: the ŠKODA 110 R showcased in 1970. The mass-production sports coupé was among the dream cars of the Eastern bloc. Rear-wheel drive, sports seats, sports steering wheel and three auxiliary instruments as well as the frameless side windows are among the special features included in the two-door car built until 1976.
The ŠKODA 110 R also provided the basis for the ‘Porsche of the East’: the ŠKODA 130 RS, successful in motorsport and especially popular among privateers, celebrated its debut in 1975. At the Monte Carlo rally in 1977, it won group 2 for cars with a cylinder capacity of up to 1.3 litres. In 1981, ŠKODA won the manufacturers’ rankings in the European Touring Car Championship with this model. At the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, ŠKODA will showcase both the rally version and the track version of the 130 RS. The latter will participate in the qualifying and main race for the ‘AvD Touring Car and GT Trophy’ on Friday and Saturday morning (09.45 and 08.55 respectively). The rally version will burn rubber as part of the popular ‘Slowly Sideways’ run on Saturday afternoon (from 13.40).
Furthermore, the newly built ŠKODA 200 RS – based on its historic predecessor and with seven-time German Rally Champion Matthias Kahle behind the wheel – will cause a furore at the event. The original prototype coupé, which, in comparison to the 130 RS, is about 15 centimetres lower, was only used on a few rallies in 1974 due to a change in the regulations. In spite of this, the 200 RS was a milestone in the Czech brand’s motorsport tradition.
On Friday (11.45) and Sunday (12.55), all of ŠKODA’s 36 cars wowing the public throughout the weekend at the Nürburgring will be on the Grand Prix circuit for some parade laps. A ŠKODA OCTAVIA World Rally Car as well as a ŠKODA RAPID, 120 GLS, FELICIA, SUPERB and TUDOR will all join the party. Almost all of the treasured cars come from private collections and are driven by their respective owners.
As an official partner of the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix, ŠKODA supports the famous event for historic motorsport and will provide fans and spectators with plenty of racing action off the track. In the paddock, enthusiasts can admire the treasures at close range and can even get behind the steering wheel themselves: a rally simulator awaits in the ŠKODA AUTO marquee.

ŠKODA sextet taking part in the 2016 Sachsen Classic
› A total of six ŠKODAs are taking part in the iconic rally in Saxony
› ŠKODA 430, ŠKODA FELICIA, ŠKODA 1100 MBX De Luxe, ŠKODA 130 RS, ŠKODA 110 R and ŠKODA FAVORIT ‘Monte Carlo Rally’ are among the large starting field of 180 teams of drivers
› 14th Sachsen Classic is taking place from 18th-20th August 2016
Mladá Boleslav, 17 August 2016 – It is considered to be the ‘Mille Miglia of the East’ – the Sachsen Classic. This year, ŠKODA is sending six ŠKODA icons to the beautiful roads of Saxony. The sextet of historic ŠKODA vehicles ranges from the 1926 ŠKODA 430 to the 1991 ŠKODA FAVORIT ‘Monte Carlo Rally’. The 14th Sachsen Classic begins on 18th August 2016 in Zwickau and ends two days later in Chemnitz after around 600 km. A total of 180 teams are participating.
“One of the stages of this year’s Sachsen Classic will again pass through the Czech Republic, providing us with a great opportunity to evoke ŠKODA’s history in front of an enthralled crowd,” said Andrea Frydlová, manager of the ŠKODA Museum. “The wide variety of vehicles and the scenic route make the iconic rally a special event for ŠKODA. We are looking forward to impressing the many ŠKODA fans along the route with icons from the ŠKODA Museum and privately owned vehicles,” added Frydlová.
The 1926 ŠKODA 430 is racing in Saxony as the oldest classic ŠKODA. As the name suggests, the car is powered by a four-cylinder engine with a cylinder capacity of 1,661 cc and a power output of 30 PS. The ŠKODA FELICIA from 1969 is a popular vehicle at classic car rallies. The open motor car is one of the most coveted classic cars, similar to the rare two-door ŠKODA 1100 MBX De Luxe from 1969.
The three other ŠKODA icons taking part in the Sachsen Classic will also get the hearts of motorsport fans racing. The ŠKODA 130 RS from 1976 is a thoroughbred rally car and was one of the most successful rally cars of the 1970s and 80s. As well as in rallies, the 130 RS was also a staple of track races and won, among others, the 1981 European Touring Car Championship and the 1977 Monte Carlo Rally in the category for cars with a cylinder capacity of up to 1,300 cc.
Another reminder of ŠKODA’s motorsport successes at the 14th edition of the Sachsen Classic is the ŠKODA 110 R coupé from 1978. Under the bonnet beats a 1.1-litre engine with a power output of 52 PS.
ŠKODA’s presence is completed with a replica of the 1991 ŠKODA FAVORIT ‘Monte Carlo Rally’ rally car, whose year of manufacture marks this year’s 25th anniversary of the collaboration between ŠKODA and Volkswagen.
The 14th Sachsen Classic begins on Thursday 18th August at one minute past midday from the ‘Platz der Völkerfreundschaft’ in Zwickau with an approximately 125-km-long stage. A total of 180 participants will line up at the start this year. Awaiting them is a delightful and challenging route of around 600 kilometres of Saxony’s most beautiful roads. On Friday, participants will go for an all-day, approximately 250-kilometre-long drive through the Ore Mountains, including a short detour to the Czech Republic. They will reach the finishing line in Chemnitz on Saturday afternoon after a stage of approximately 230 kilometres.

› Strong Tradition: bicycle manufacturing by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement laid foundation stone for the corporate success story 121 years ago
Mladá Boleslav, 19 August 2016 – Just four weeks after the winners of this year’s Tour de France raised crystal glass sculptures designed by ŠKODA into the sky above Paris, the next cycling highlight will be starting next Saturday with the ‘Vuelta’. This year, ŠKODA will be at the start of the Tour of Spain for the sixth time as the official partner. The ‘engine of cycling’ will be providing the event organisers with more than 70 vehicles. A ŠKODA SUPERB will be leading the riders as the ‘Red Car’. In addition, the brand will once again be partner for the Green Jersey for best sprinter. The 71st Tour of Spain takes place from 20 August to 11 September, over 21 stages covering 3,315 kilometres.
After the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, the Vuelta a España is one of the most important stage races in the world; it starts next Saturday with the Team Time Trial covering 29.4 kilometres in the region of Galicia in the far northwest of Spain. The climbing specialists, in particular, will have an important say in the fight for the Red Jersey, worn by the overall winner, especially in the light of ten summit finishes. The 196-kilometre crowning stage of this year’s ‘Vuelta’ leads the riders across the border to France and the legendary Pyrenean climb Col d’Aubisque on 3 September. The winners will be announced in Madrid On September 11.
“Every year, millions of people eagerly follow the ‘Vuelta’ cycling action – either live along the route or at home in front of the television screens,” says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “We are looking forward to this cycling highlight, which ŠKODA has been supporting as the official partner since 2011, and as the second-time partner of the Green Jersey. Of course, a special highlight is the use of the SUPERB as the official ‘Red Car’”. In 2014 ŠKODA extended their ‘Vuelta’ and Tour de France sponsorship until 2018. The agreement also includes other international cycling classics.
As in previous years, ŠKODA will be sending a strong fleet to the Spanish cycling show. More than 70 cars from Mladá Boleslav will be used as escort vehicles in the 21 stages - primarily ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI and ŠKODA SUPERBs. Over the years, the Czech carmaker’s models have impressively demonstrated their high reliability and versatility. During their three-week deployment across Spain, the ŠKODA fleet covers around half a million kilometres. Since 2011, the total distance driven adds up to more than 2.5 million kilometres – and all without a single breakdown.
Driving alongside the cycling pros, the ŠKODA SUPERB will be drawing attention over the coming weeks: the car leads the field of competitors as the ‘Red Car’ and serves the organizers as a mobile control centre. Appropriately, the SUPERB limousine is finished in the colour ‘Corrida-Red’.
In addition, ŠKODA AUTO and ŠKODA Spain will be accompanying the sponsorship with a high-profile publicity campaign. ŠKODA’s website WeLoveCycling.com features live reports, videos and a wide range of information about the fascinating world of cycling. Fans can also receive the latest updates from ŠKODA on their Facebook wall facebook.com/skoda-cycling.
ŠKODA is the ‘engine of cycling’
ŠKODA’s commitment to cycling demonstrates the special relationship the brand has to the sport: The carmaker’s history began 121 years ago in 1895 with Václav Laurin and Václav Klement founding their bicycle production workshop in Bohemian Mladá Boleslav – the location of the brand’s headquarters today. Cycling has traditionally been a cornerstone of ŠKODA’s sponsorship strategy. This year, ŠKODA was the official sponsor and partner of the Tour de France for the 13th time and since 2015 is as well the partner of the Green Jersey for best sprinter. In addition, the car manufacturer supports other international and national cycling competitions and grass-roots cycling events. Last but not least, ŠKODA’s extended product portfolio includes practical accessories for amateur cyclists as well as bicycles.

Smart glove: ŠKODA Logistics is focusing on future technology
› Industry 4.0: ŠKODA is preparing for production work of the future and is continuously testing state-of-the-art technology
› Intelligent glove: ProGlove optimises the supply of parts in ŠKODA Logistics
› Head of ŠKODA Brand Logistics, Jiří Cee: “The glove helps our team work more quickly, more efficiently and with virtually no errors.”
Mladá Boleslav, 22 August 2016 – ŠKODA is preparing intensively for the forth industrial revolution. With the smart ProGlove industrial glove, the Czech car manufacturer is focusing on innovative future technology. Use of the glove facilitates and improves the work of ŠKODA Logistics.
“Nowadays, logistics is an important economic and competitive factor which contributes considerably to a car manufacturer’s success,” said Jiří Cee, Head of ŠKODA Brand Logistics. “At ŠKODA, we therefore continuously test cutting-edge technology in order to improve the day-to-day work of our employees. The intelligent ProGlove helps our team to work more quickly, more efficiently and with virtually no errors,” added Cee.
ŠKODA intends to bring the digital age onto their factory floors. The ProGlove is an electronic glove with a built-in scanner designed to improve work in logistics. This smart glove underwent an endurance test which convinced ŠKODA Logistics. “ProGlove proved itself to be the ideal solution for series production and has been used in our logistics ever since,” said Cee.
Most importantly, the smart glove is designed to make day-to-day work easier and quicker for the wearer. The device shows, for example, whether the right part is being used and whether production steps are being correctly followed.
Like a traditional scanner, the glove can also capture data – but in one simple action and without any additional device. This allows goods to be registered quickly and easily. In addition, workflow becomes more ergonomic for the user: data collection or material testing are incorporated into natural hand movements.
Using the intelligent glove, codes can be read both vertically and horizontally. The code is then confirmed using the activation button on the index finger. The code is confirmed either by a sound or a vibration therefore preventing an incorrect code from being scanned.
ŠKODA Logistics currently employs over 3,000 members of staff who plan and ensure successful delivery of worldwide brand logistics.

Five vintage ŠKODAs start in the Hamburg-Berlin Klassik
› ŠKODA participating in ‘Rally of the North’ for seventh time
› Rolling Rarities: From the legendary ŠKODA 440 SPARTAK of 1957 to the racing car ŠKODA 130 RS
› Three-day rally leads 180 driver teams through picturesque streets of Hamburg in federal capital
Mladá Boleslav, 24 August 2016 – ŠKODA’s participation in the Hamburg-Berlin Klassik has become a tradition. ŠKODA classic cars will be starting in the prestigious 'Rally of the North' for the seventh time. Spectators watching the 9th Hamburg-Berlin Klassik can look forward to five ŠKODA classics this year. The vintage cars from Mladá Boleslav show the variety of ŠKODA’s model history, ranging from the well-known ŠKODA 440 SPARTAK dating back to 1957, to the racing car ŠKODA 130 RS from the year 1976.
“Taking part in this fascinating drive is an absolute must for ŠKODA,” says Andrea Frydlová, Head of ŠKODA Museum. “ŠKODA is represented by five rolling rarities this year. Last year we gained the upper hand in the Hamburg-Berlin Klassik in the category of post-war vehicles. ŠKODA’s vehicles also have a very high chance of success this year,” Frydlová is convinced.
The ‘Rally of the North’ is one of the finest vintage- and classic-car rallies in Germany. The 9th Hamburg-Berlin Klassik tour takes place from 25 to 27 August along marvellous routes from the Hanseatic City to the capital. A colourful array of 180 vehicles is now on its way to the pleasure trip. The uniformity and reliability rally is characterized by a scenic route, exciting stages and a varied programme.
The oldest ŠKODA vehicle in the Hamburg-Berlin Klassik is the ŠKODA 440 SPARTAK dating back to 1957. Under the hood of the distinctive classic there is a 40 horsepower engine with 1,089 cc engine. ŠKODA’s fleet this year also includes a car of the same type but one year younger, which has been carefully restored by an owner from Germany.
Hardly any other car casts a spell on spectators as does the elegant convertibleŠKODA FELICIA. The specimen from the ŠKODA Museum’s inventory was produced in 1961. Since this vintage car weighs a mere 930 kg, its 50 hp engine makes this model surprisingly spritely.
The sporty coupé ŠKODA 110 R is currently in high demand and every interesting specimen attracts the attention of collectors. The automobile, which was produced in 1978, features a 1107 cm3 engine with an output of 52 hp.
The racing-car legend ŠKODA 130 RS from 1976 is pure emotion. Behind the wheel is the seven-time German Rally Champion Matthias Kahle. By winning the European Touring Car Championship in 1981 and its class victory in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1977, the 'Porsche of the East' is an outstanding representative of ŠKODA’s 115-year motorsport history and one of the most fascinating racing cars of its time.
The start of this year’s Hamburg-Berlin Klassik takes place against the spectacular backdrop of the fish auction hall in Hamburg. The first vehicle will be rolling onto the launch ramp on Thursday 25 August at twelve o'clock. The all-day stage on Friday will take the participants past Mecklenburg Fleesensee. Starting from there, the vintage and classic cars will enter the final stage on Saturday, taking the participants to Berlin.

ŠKODA KODIAQ: Interior Revealed
› More car: Third row of seats and boot capacity set standards
› New interior design: instrument panel with two symmetrical zones, upright air vents, touch display in sophisticated glass design
› Intuitive operation: cockpit features logical and user-friendly layout
› ŠKODA presents new SUV model in Berlin on 1 September 2016
Mladá Boleslav, 30 August 2016 – This is how ŠKODA’s new large SUV looks in the interior: Shortly before its world premiere, the Czech automobile manufacturer gives a first glimpse inside the new large SUV. The photos emphasize that ŠKODA has implemented their modern, clear, expressive design language in the cockpit and the interior. At the same time, the images highlight the brand’s high and uncompromising standards in terms of functionality and build quality. ŠKODA is once again setting new standards in interior space: The ŠKODA KODIAQ features the largest boot in its class and is optionally available as a seven-seater.
The interior of the ŠKODA KODIAQ is powerful and robust, yet welcomes passengers with a friendly character. As with all ŠKODA models, the KODIAQ is modern and elegant whilst meeting the functional requirements of an SUV. Every detail conveys clarity and calm; form and function are harmonized.
The expressively and elegantly designed dashboard is uncluttered. It is divided into two symmetrical zones for driver and passenger. Distinctive vertical elements, such as the four large air inlets characterise the interior. The middle ones flank the on-board monitor. Their edges run along the top of the instrument panel and form a trapezoid, which reflects the ŠKODA KODIAQ’s bonnet. The large display has an elegant glass design with ‘Simply Clever’ operation – logical and intuitive. All switches and functions are easily accessible with a self-explanatory layout. The seats are made of high quality materials, offering the driver and front passenger superior comfort.
The above-average space, which sets new standards in its class, is characteristic of ŠKODA: The developers of the KODIAQ have made the largest interior possible from the external dimensions of 4.70 meters in length and 1.88 meters in width. For the first time in a ŠKODA, the SUV is also available with seven seats. The model can react flexibly to various seating and cargo requirements thanks to longitudinally adjustable reclining seats.
With a volume of 720 to 2,065 l (with rear seats folded), the five-seater ŠKODA KODIAQ offers the largest boot in its class. Options such as the heated steering wheel ensure high comfort. The same is true of the more than 30 ‘Simply Clever’ solutions, such as the door edge protection, electric child safety and sleep headrests.
The new ŠKODA KODIAQ celebrates its world premiere in Berlin on 1 September 2016. ŠKODA will be broadcasting the impressive production of film, music and choreography live on the Internet from 19:00 CEST.
You can follow the 45-minute vehicle presentation via live stream. The media also have the opportunity to broadcast the transmission via embed code on their own channels.

Mladá Boleslav/Berlin, 1 September 2016 – With a length of 4.70 m, up to seven seats and the largest boot within its class, the ŠKODA KODIAQ is the Czech car manufacturer’s first large SUV. From early 2017, ŠKODA’s latest model will present itself with all of the brand’s strengths: a design that is full of character, extraordinary interior space, practical intelligence and innovative technology that can otherwise only be found in higher vehicle classes. The ŠKODA KODIAQ marks the beginning of ŠKODA’s extensive SUV campaign.
“With the ŠKODA KODIAQ, we are striking out in a new direction and opening up new markets,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “With our first large SUV, we are conquering a new segment for the brand – and new customer groups. Our new addition to the ŠKODA model range is truly as strong as a bear: it makes the brand even more attractive thanks to its concept, striking design and as the first ŠKODA that has the option of always being online and thereby offering more comfort, safety and real-time information. The ŠKODA KODIAQ is at the forefront of ŠKODA’s extensive SUV campaign.”
ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development, Christian Strube, added, “The ŠKODA KODIAQ offers all of our brand’s strengths: well-thought-out functionality, superior interior space and excellent value for money. The largest boot compared to the competition and the optional third row of seats alone make our new SUV the ideal companion for day-to-day demands. And when it comes to driver assistance systems, infotainment and connectivity, the ŠKODA KODIAQ proves ŠKODA’s innovative capabilities, offering the technology of higher classes and therefore putting itself at the top of its segment.”
Exterior design
The ŠKODA KODIAQ is an all-rounder: the SUV is suitable for business, as well as family and leisure use – and drives off-road with ease. The brand transfers its new design language into the SUV segment with a design that reflects the car’s versatile character: the ŠKODA KODIAQ features a bold interplay of elegant lines, sporty contours and robustness, which make it easily recognisable.
All of the ŠKODA KODIAQ’s lines are clear, precise and clean-cut – this applies in particular to the distinctive, highly recessed shoulder line. Double horizontal lines on the front symbolise protection and strength. The wide, three-dimensional radiator grille is striking and conveys the robust character. The narrow, raked headlights, which flow seamlessly into the radiator grille, give the ŠKODA KODIAQ a distinctive appearance. The two double-headlights create a striking four-eyed face and stand out due to their crystalline structure, which can also be seen in other features such as the rear lights. Here, ŠKODA’s Head of Design, Jozef Kabaň, and his team were inspired by traditional Czech crystal glass art which is also reflected in the effective interplay of light and shade on the SUV’s highly contoured surfaces.
In the side view, the long wheelbase and short overhangs point to the large interior. The wheel arches are slightly angular – a key element of ŠKODA’s SUV design language. LEDs are used as standard in the rear lights; the rear lights also feature the C-shaped design that is typical of ŠKODA. A choice of 14 paint finishes is available – four standard colours and ten metallic colours. The appearance of the components varies according to the three trim levels – Active, Ambition and Style – which are offered in the ŠKODA KODIAQ as optional extras.
Body
With its dimensions, the ŠKODA KODIAQ is at the upper end of the compact car segment. It is 4,697 mm long, 1,882 mm wide and 1,676 mm tall (including roof rails); its wheelbase measures 2,791 mm. The KODIAQ is based on Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) in which strict lightweight construction plays an important role. For the body, a combination of hot-stamped metal sheets forms the
ultra-strong backbone. With the entry-level TSI engine and front-wheel drive, the large SUV weighs just 1,452 kg when empty (without driver), or 1,540 kg with the 1.4 TSI engine and all-wheel drive.
Torsional stiffness, manufacturing precision, drive comfort and crash safety are also superior. Thanks to its highly aerodynamic finesse, the large SUV achieves a cx value of just 0.33.
Interior
The amount of space is typical of ŠKODA: the ŠKODA KODIAQ is just 40 mm longer than the ŠKODA OCTAVIA, but offers a larger-than-average interior for the SUV segment. Achieving extraordinary interior space from the exterior dimensions available once again proves the brand’s excellent engineering prowess. The large SUV’s interior length is 1,793 mm, elbow room is 1,527 mm in the front and 1,510 mm in the rear. Head room is 1,020 mm in the front and 1,014 mm in the rear. Rear legroom measures up to 104 mm.
The large SUV’s interior is also protective and robust. The crisp exterior design carries on into the interior: the double lines – with their three-dimensional appearance – also feature on the instrument panel. The interior is characterised by bold vertical elements, such as the four large air vents. The large display splits the instrument panel into two equal sections for the driver and passenger.
The high-quality workmanship as well as the logical and easy-to-understand operation are typical of ŠKODA. The large circular instruments have a precise and clear design. The steering wheel is available in a choice of different versions – one of which is heated. The optional three-zone Climatronic, which has its own control panel for the rear seats, is another feature which is often only found in higher vehicle classes. The electro-mechanical parking brake is activated by pressing a button.
Numerous comfort features are available for the front seats. As an option, they can be heated, ventilated and adjusted electronically; the latter optional extra also includes a memory function. The ŠKODA KODIAQ’s rear seats are also extremely versatile: they can be folded in the ratio 60:40, can be moved lengthways by 18 cm as standard and the angle of the backrest is individually adjustable. Two more seats in the third row are available as an optional extra – the ŠKODA KODIAQ is ŠKODA’s first 7-seater.
As an alternative to the standard fabric covers, a fabric/leather combination and leather or Alcantara covers are offered. The decor is available in five designs. In darkness, the optional ambient lighting adds an individual touch to the interior. It is built into the door trims and can be set to ten different colours.
Boot
With a volume of 720 to 2,065 l (with the rear seats folded down), the ŠKODA KODIAQ offers the largest boot within its class. If the optional folding passenger seat is chosen, the SUV can transport items up to 2.80 m long. An electrically operated tailgate is available as an option, and can – as an additional optional extra – also be opened and closed using foot gesture command or a button in the interior. The ŠKODA KODIAQ with the TDI/DSG/4×4 drivetrain can tow a trailer weighing up to 2.5 t. An electrically retractable tow bar is available for this.
Equipment
The ‘Simply Clever’ features available in the ŠKODA KODIAQ are further proof that ŠKODA always offers a little bit ‘more car’ for your money – practical and convenient assistance in everyday life which is typical of the brand. These include, for example, door-edge protection: thanks to preloaded springs, this deploys automatically when opening the car door and prevents the metal edge of the door from coming into contact with a garage wall or an adjacent car. When shutting the door, the trim folds itself back in. This ‘Simply Clever’ feature thereby prevents bumps and scratches to your own car, as well as neighbouring vehicles. Electric child safety lock for the rear doors, In-Car Communication, as well as sleep headrests are available as optional extras for the first time in a ŠKODA. All in all, the ŠKODA KODIAQ provides more than 30 ‘Simply Clever’ features, seven of which are new.
Driver assistance systems
ŠKODA’s large SUV takes to the roads with a wide range of driver assistance systems – many of which have, until now, only been seen in higher vehicle classes. Some systems come as standard, others are available as an option – individually, but also as a package.
An innovation for the portfolio is Tow Assist: when the ŠKODA KODIAQ is towing a trailer, the system takes over steering when reversing slowly. Additionally, while reversing, the new Manoeuvre Assist will brake as soon as an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle. The system is controlled using an enhanced function of the rear parking sensors.
The Area View system is also a first for the brand: the surround-view cameras, which are located in the front and rear sections as well as in the wing mirrors of the ŠKODA KODIAQ, come with wide-angle lenses and allow views of the area immediately surrounding the car to be displayed on the monitor. These include a virtual, top-down view and 180-degree images of the areas to the front and rear. This makes it easier to drive in confusing situations or on rough terrain.
Front Assist including City Emergency Brake come as standard and, using radar, can detect dangerous situations involving pedestrians or other vehicles in front of the car. If necessary, the system warns the driver and, when required, partially or fully applies the brakes. City Emergency Brake is active up to 34 km/h. The optional Predictive Pedestrian Protection complements Front Assist.
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is also radar assisted and helps the driver to maintain the selected speed and the desired gap between the ŠKODA KODIAQ and the car in front. Lane Assist, Blind Spot Detect and Rear Traffic Alert help the driver to stay in lane, make changing lanes safer using the rear radar and help when manoeuvring in reverse. If the car is fitted with Lane Assist, ACC and DSG transmission, Traffic Jam Assist comes as an additional function. It maintains speed and applies the brakes in slow-moving traffic. Additionally, the car will be kept in lane up to speeds of 65 km/h thanks to the Lane Assist function.
Driver Alert detects signs of fatigue in the driver and prompts the driver to take a break. Emergency Assist, also only in combination with DSG transmission, is a further function of the ACC and Lane Assist combination. Should the danger arise that the driver is unable to drive, the system can bring the large SUV to a standstill. Crew Protect Assist, available in a choice of two variants, closes the windows and sunroof, and tensions the seat belts automatically in the event of an impending accident. If you have an accident, the Multi-Collision Brake, which comes as standard, prevents any further uncontrolled movement of the ŠKODA KODIAQ. The camera-based Travel Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition displays speed limits and other road signs as images on the in-car computer as well as the navigation system.
ŠKODA Connect
With its infotainment and connectivity solutions, the large SUV from ŠKODA shows how an SUV can always be online. With the new, groundbreaking and innovative mobile online services, ŠKODA presents a new dimension of navigation, information and entertainment. At the same time, ŠKODA Connect helps with remote access to the vehicle as well as assistance.
ŠKODA Connect is comprised of two categories: the Infotainment Online services provide more information and real-time navigation details. Care Connect provides remote access as well as assistance.
Infotainment Online includes online traffic information, which shows traffic flow on the chosen route in real time. The Google Earth services (available for the Columbus system) embed the route into a topographical view from Google; Google Street View (available for the Columbus system) displays a street view of the destination. Map updates as well as fuel prices, parking information, online news, weather information and ‘My Points of Interest’ services round off the infotainment package. Infotainment Online services are provided free of charge for the first year after purchasing a new car and are available at an extra cost thereafter.
The Emergency Call after an accident is the most important feature of the Care Connect services: the Emergency Call (eCall) is sent directly to an emergency call centre when a restraint system is deployed. This comes as standard and is integrated into the Care Connect services. It also comes with a notification function for minor accidents as well as a breakdown call. Proactive Service is also included in the Care Connect services. When this is activated, all of the required data is sent to the garage in a timely manner before a vehicle’s service. The third Care Connect service is Remote Access.
ŠKODA now also offers the ŠKODA Connect app, which can be used to access and control additional services. For example: the smartphone will alert the owner if their car is being moved by a third party in an unauthorised manner – be that too fast or outside a specified area. Using the app, the route planner can be transferred from home to the navigation system in the car.
For the first time, the SmartLink all-in-one app also integrates SmartGate in the new ŠKODA KODIAQ SUV – alongside the existing Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink™ standards. All of the popular services are available in just one app: navigational data, music and news as well as all relevant vehicle data via the car’s infotainment system – and this is the case for every trim level.
Infotainment systems
The music and infotainment systems in the ŠKODA KODIAQ represent the latest technology. They work quickly, offer state-of-the-art functions and interfaces, and feature capacitive touch displays in a glass design – they react to the touch of a finger and not just to pressure. The basic functions are easy to operate using physical buttons and control dials.
The Swing infotainment system with its 6.5-inch screen comes as standard. It can be supplemented with a smartphone Bluetooth connection and ŠKODA SmartLink. SmartLink supports the use of the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLinkTM standards in the car. When the customer connects their phone to the USB port, the relevant setting displays on the infotainment display.
The optional Bolero infotainment system features a high-definition 8.0-inch touchscreen, including the In-Car Communication (ICC) function. The hands-free microphone records the driver’s voice, and transfers it to the back seats via the rear speakers.
The Amundsen navigation infotainment system builds on the capabilities of the Bolero system with a navigation function as well as a special display mode for driving off-road or even in narrow car parks. The top-of-the-range infotainment system, the Columbus navigation system, adds a 64-GB flash memory and DVD drive. An optional LTE module facilitates high-speed online access in the ŠKODA KODIAQ. Using a WLAN hotspot (optional), passengers can use their mobile devices to surf, stream and send emails at their convenience.
Attractive additional components round off the hardware offering in the ŠKODA KODIAQ: the Phonebox charges a smartphone inductively using the Qi standard and connects to the car aerial – both processes occur wirelessly. The Canton Sound System features ten speakers, including a subwoofer, and has a power output of 575 watts. As an option, the ŠKODA KODIAQ can be equipped with tablet holders that can be attached to the front headrests. The devices can be charged using optional 230 V and USB sockets.
Engines
Five powertrains, two TDI and three TSI engines, make up the engine range at the launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ. They have capacities of 1.4 and 2.0 l, and power output ranges from 92 kW (125 PS) to 140 kW (190 PS). The diesel and petrol engines feature turbocharged direct injection and fulfil EU6 emission standards. All engines also feature a Stop-Start system, brake energy recovery and a powerful thermo-management system, contributing to low consumption despite the mighty power delivery.
The 2.0 TDI is available in two versions. The first version generates 110 kW (150 PS) and 340 Nm. The top-of-the-range version delivers 140 kW (190 PS) and puts 400 Nm on the crankshaft. On average, the entry-level TDI consumes 5.0 l of diesel (131 g CO2/km) per 100 km. The most powerful diesel engine accelerates the large SUV from 0-100 km/h in 8.6 s and reaches a top speed of up to 210 km/h.
The range of petrol engines consists of two 1.4 TSI engines and one 2.0 TSI. The entry-level version of the compact four-cylinder generates 92 kW (125 PS) and 200 Nm of torque. Its NEDC consumption is 6.0 l per 100 km, which corresponds to 140 g CO2/km. In the more powerful version, the 1.4-litre exerts 110 kW (150 PS) and 250 Nm of torque; its ACT system – Active Cylinder Technology – shuts down the second and third cylinders when the load and engine speed are low. The top-of-the-range 2.0 TSI petrol engine features a new combustion process for high efficiency. Power output is 132 kW (180 PS), torque is 320 Nm.

part II:
Transmission
The ŠKODA KODIAQ is available with various transmission technologies. Depending on the engine, there is a 6-speed manual gearbox or DSG transmissions with six or seven speeds.
The new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is making its debut at ŠKODA. It is a variant that has been designed for powerful engines with torque of up to 600 Nm. The DSG transmission is a very compact construction and enables quick and comfortable gear changing.
The driver can operate the 7-speed DSG in the automatic D and S mode, or control it manually using the gear lever or the steering wheel paddles. When Eco mode is selected in the optional Driving Mode Select, the car is taken out of gear: as soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator at a speed above 20 km/h, drive is disengaged – the ŠKODA KODIAQ is coasting.
Both top-of-the-range engines – the TDI with 140 kW (190 PS) and the TSI with 132 kW (180 PS) – are coupled with the 7-speed DSG and all-wheel drive. This combination is new at ŠKODA. The manual 6-speed transmission and 6-speed DSG are the options for the 1.4 TSI with 110 kW (150 PS) and all-wheel drive; front-wheel drive is coupled with the 6-speed DSG. The entry-level diesel with all-wheel drive is offered with the manual 6-speed transmission or the 7-speed DSG; the front-wheel-drive version is offered solely with the 7-speed DSG. The entry-level TSI is available with manual
6-speed transmission and front-wheel drive.
The all-wheel-drive system with electronic control is available for most engine variants. It delivers a big increase in traction, stability and driving safety – even off-road.
The centrepiece of the all-wheel drive is an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The all-wheel-drive system works intelligently and quickly. The control unit constantly calculates the ideal driving torque for the rear axle; loss of traction is virtually eliminated due to a control system that is dependent on driving status. When in overrun or at low load, drive is via the front axle, which saves fuel.
Chassis
The chassis of the ŠKODA KODIAQ is also the result of concentrated expertise. The components of the MacPherson front struts consist partially of aluminium; the steel four-link rear axle absorbs the longitudinal and transverse forces separately. The power steering, using an efficient electro-mechanical drive, ensures exact contact with the road and works in close harmony with several assistance systems in the ŠKODA KODIAQ.
In the Active and Ambition trim levels, the large SUV from ŠKODA comes equipped with 17-inch wheels as standard; 18-inch wheels are standard in the Style trim level. The range of optional extras extends to burnished 19-inch wheels. The brakes – with large ventilated brake discs at the front – are strong and stable. When cornering quickly, the electronic differential lock XDS+, which is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), makes handling even smoother and safer for both front- and all-wheel drive.
As an optional extra, ŠKODA is making Driving Mode Select available in its large SUV. It allows the driver to adjust the operation of the engine and DSG management, power steering, air conditioning and other systems in Normal, Eco, Sport and Individual modes. The all-wheel-drive versions offer Snow mode on top of this, which is designed for driving on roads and does not have a speed limit. Snow mode adapts the operation of the ABS, ASR and ACC (if fitted) systems, as well as the engine management and electronically controlled, all-wheel, multi-plate clutch to slippery and snow-covered roads.
Adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) is also available as an option, and is integrated into Driving Mode Select. Here, electric valves control the work of the shock absorbers depending on the situation. Combined with Driving Mode Select, the system adapts to the driving style of the driver and manoeuvres the driver safely on the road. Using DCC, the driver can choose between Comfort, Normal or Sport modes.
And the ŠKODA KODIAQ keeps going when the paved road ends. Off-road mode can be selected by the simple touch of a button (optional for the all-wheel-drive versions in combination with Driving Mode Select). Here, the chassis, engine management and brakes adjust their operation specifically to rough terrain. This mainly involves pulling away, traction and deceleration. In off-road mode, Hill Descent Assist helps the driver to safely master driving downhill over rough terrain by braking appropriately.

Series production of best-selling ŠKODA OCTAVIA began 20 years ago
› First ŠKODA OCTAVIA rolled off production line at newly constructed plant in Mladá Boleslav two decades ago
› Modular vehicle design, advanced technology, high efficiency and ergonomics in OCTAVIA production
› Production figures rose by more than a third within a year
› ŠKODA OCTAVIA one of most successful model series in automotive world
› Undisputed bestseller in traditional brand’s 121-year history with more than five million units sold
Mladá Boleslav, 5 September 2016 – 20 years ago, on 3 September 1996, former Czech President Vaclav Havel gave the starting signal for the production of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA in the newly opened part of the plant at the company's headquarters. This also marked the beginning of a unique success story: Over the following two decades, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA became a worldwide bestseller and is still the best selling model of the brand from Mladá Boleslav. The popular compact car paved the way for ŠKODA’s success.
In February 1995 in Mladá Boleslav, the foundation stone for the new production line was laid, on which the first ŠKODA OCTAVIAs would be produced around 18 months later. For the new series ŠKODA built a modern production line in a 32,000-square-meter hall. In addition, a total of 2,500 square meters of office space and 3,000 square meters of social areas were created. In March 1996, the new paint shop was completed, where up to 1,800 bodies of model series ŠKODA FELICIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA would be painted every day
On 3 September 1996, former President of the Czech Republic Václav Havel inaugurated the new plant and also officially gave the go-ahead for the series production of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA. “The plant is beautiful, modern, really pretty. It would be great if all factories looked like this.” – Havel’s words of praise at the opening ceremony.
The development of the completely new OCTAVIA model series began in 1992, approximately one year after the traditional Czech brand joined the Volkswagen Group. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA was based on a Group platform which was completely new at the time. The robust body structure, which had been developed using the latest CAD (Computer Aided Design) technology, provided exemplary active and passive safety in combination with front airbags for driver and passenger. In addition, this was the first time that ŠKODA had offered the then new side airbags for the OCTAVIA.
With the clever liftback solution, the new compact featured an especially practical highlight: Thanks to the large tailgate of the hatchback model, customers benefited from excellent access to the 528-litre boot, which could be extended to as much as 1,328 litres by folding the rear seats down.
In 1996 – the first sales year – ŠKODA OCTAVIA customers could choose from two four-cylinder petrol engines or a turbodiesel drivetrain. In May 1998, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI extended the model range; from 1999 the estate version was also available with all-wheel drive. The last vehicle from the first generation rolled off the production line in November 2010. Between September 1996 and November 2010 around 970,000 saloons and more than 470,000 estates were delivered.
The second-generation ŠKODA OCTAVIA seamlessly continued the success story of its predecessor: Between 2004 and 2013, 1.6 million customers opted for the saloon, 900,000 buyers chose the ŠKODA OCTAVIA estate. The third generation of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA has been in production since November 2012. Today the bestseller is considered the heart of the brand and is extremely popular both as a family car and as a company vehicle. Since the start of production of the first generation on September 3, 1996, more than five million ŠKODA OCTAVIAs have left the production halls. In addition to the main plant in Mladá Boleslav the compact is also manufactured at the ŠKODA plants in China, India, Russia and Kazakhstan.
