Electric tow tractor in the ŠKODA plant: Solar panels charge batteries during operation

› ŠKODA has fitted electric tow tractors with solar panels at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav
› The use of solar energy achieves average annual savings of approx. 10 % of mains electricity
› A fleet of seventeen Still R 07 electric tow tractors have been deployed by ŠKODA Logistics
› Over the medium term, ŠKODA aims to use alternative power in a part of its in-plant utility vehicles
› Zero-emissions logistics vehicles are another stepping stone in ŠKODA´s GreenFuture strategy of extensive environmental measures

Mladá Boleslav, 9 September 2016 – ŠKODA Logistics is intensifying the use of in-plant battery-powered electric vehicles at the carmaker´s main plant in Mladá Boleslav. As part of a pilot project, an electric tow tractor with two trailers was fitted with solar panels. The photovoltaic modules charge Li-ion batteries during operation. ŠKODA expects to save approx. 10 % of power on average annually by using solar power in the operation of these vehicles. Photovoltaic technology will be applied on a large scale if the trial is successful.

The solar modules are installed on the roofs of the trailers and charge the traction batteries of the tow tractor, which lowers the frequency at which the battery must be replaced at charging stations. A solar-powered tractor consumes approx. 10 % less mains electricity and also has extended endurance between charging cycles. The solar panels typically charge the batteries of the vehicle to full capacity over the weekend. The battery-powered electric tow trucks cover a distance of almost 70 kilometres every day in the Mladá Boleslav plant. For every day of operation, it is possible to measure the length of each charging cycle, the amount of energy supplied by mains electricity, and the share provided by the solar panels. This data is continuously stored and will be processed as part of the Green Logistics semester course at the ŠKODA AUTO University.

Along with the electric tow tractor fitted with additional solar panels, there are fifteen other battery-powered electric tractors deployed in logistics at the Mladá Boleslav plant. These rigs operate purely on battery power supplied by charging stations where the battery packs are replaced. As part of its environmental strategy, ŠKODA aims to use alternative power sources to operate a part of its in-plant logistics vehicle fleet. The carmaker´s vision for the near future is that most suppliers (in the vicinity of the ŠKODA plant) will deliver components to the main plant with utility vehicles using alternative power.
The electric drive offensive for logistics vehicles is another stepping stone in the environmental activities of ŠKODA AUTO. These are defined by the carmaker´s GreenFuture strategy and target various areas.

The GreenProduct section focuses on making ŠKODA cars environmentally acceptable at every stage of their whole life cycle – from research and development up to environmentally friendly recycling. The fundamental focus lies with low emission vehicles. The brand currently offers 107 vehicle variants with CO2 emissions of less than 120 g/km, of which 37 models achieve values below 100 g of CO2/km.

In line with the GreenFactory principle, ŠKODA is implementing numerous measures to maximise resource conservation in production.

In the period of 2010 to 2015, ŠKODA was able to lower its environmental impact by 35.8 % thanks to a decrease in energy and water consumption, waste, CO2emissions, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Even more ambitious environmental targets have been set in order to accelerate this positive trend. According to these objectives, ŠKODA will reduce the impact of its production on the environment by 45 % by 2018 compared to 2010, i.e. it will decrease this value by almost one-half. The fulfilment of the GreenFuture strategy will also be based on environmentally optimised logistics processes, including electrically powered in-plant transport.

Continued high demand: ŠKODA expands YETI capacities

› ŠKODA increases capacity for YETI production due to high demand
› The Czech manufacturer entered the SUV segment with the ŠKODA Yeti in 2009, creating a global success model
› More than 580,000 of the compact SUV sold

Mladá Boleslav, 14 September 2016 – While the Czech automaker has launched their broad SUV campaign with the recently presented ŠKODA KODIAQ, the ŠKODA YETI – the brand’s first SUV – is enjoying an unexpected rise in popularity in its seventh production year.  Since its debut in 2009, the ŠKODA YETI has been one of the most successful compact SUVs ever. In total, the manufacturer has delivered more than 580,000 ŠKODA YETIs to customers worldwide. Due to high demand, ŠKODA is currently expanding the capacity for the production of the compact SUV.

“We are delighted to be able to deliver as many ŠKODA YETI to our customers in Europe as they wish,” says Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA Board Member for Production and Logistics. “By using the production capacities of another European plant within our international production network, we can respond satisfactorily to the high demand.”

The compact SUV is currently produced at four plants: In addition to Kvasiny in ŠKODA’s home country the Czech Republic, the model is manufactured at Solomonovo (Ukraine), Nizhniy Novgorod (Russia), Öskemen / Ust Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan) and Anting (China). In order to meet the high demand for the YETI models in Europe, ŠKODA is utilizing the additional production capacities at the Nizhniy Novgorod plant. The ŠKODA YETI has been produced here since 2012 alongside the ŠKODA OCTAVIA. Production in Nizhny Novgorod is carried out in partnership with the Volkswagen Group Russia and the Russian automobile manufacturer GAZ Group.

ŠKODA entered the compact-SUV segment with the YETI model series in 2009. In Europe, the award-winning ŠKODA Yeti is one of the best-selling SUVs in its class and underlines the all-wheel-drive competence of the Czech brand.

Its distinctive design language, high functionality, extremely generous interior space yet compact external dimensions and an excellent value for money distinguish the Czech all-rounder. In addition, the model features robust off-road capabilities and top safety: On its debut, the independent Euro NCAP organization (New Car Assessment Programme) awarded the ŠKODA YETI the highest rating of five stars for occupant safety.

The series has been available in two versions since 2013: The elegant ŠKODA YETI is the crossover for the city; the adventurous ŠKODA YETI Outdoor emphasises its suitability for rough terrain with its particularly powerful off-road elements. Features include bumper with integrated underride guard and silver coloured door mirrors; the side panels and door sills are finished in black plastic for the ŠKODA YETI Outdoor. Both versions feature newly designed front and rear sections, fresh interiors, new 'Simply Clever' ideas, highest functionality and extended engine/transmission combinations. All available engines and transmissions, as well as front and all-wheel drive are available for both variants.

ŠKODA further enhanced the model series in mid-2015, equipping the popular SUV with five new, more powerful engines. They meet the requirements of the EU-6 emission standard across the board. Consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced at the top by around 20 percent. Furthermore, the ŠKODA YETI and ŠKODA YETI Outdoor come with an even more extensive range of standard equipment and the latest generation of music and infotainment systems.

More than 580,000 ŠKODA YETIs have been sold to customers around the world to date. In 2015 alone, ŠKODA delivered around 99,500 YETI models. Between January and August 2016, approximately 61,700 customers worldwide opted for a vehicle in this series.

ŠKODA FELICIA awarded ‘Most Elegant Car’ in China Classic Rally

› ŠKODA participates in Top City Classic Rally China 2016
› ŠKODA FELICIA wins award for ‘Most Elegant Car at the Event’
› Further success: victory in a special stage and award for 'Historical Revival of the Rally'
› Around 35 classic cars produced by various brands participated in the rally

Mladá Boleslav, 15 September 2016 – The ŠKODA FELICIA, the most popular open-top model, won the award for ‘Most Elegant Car’ at the Top City Classic Rally China 2016. The ŠKODA cabriolet, which was produced in 1960, drove over 500 km in each of the Beijing and Shanghai stages of the rally. The model completed the rally successfully and impressed droves of spectators along the way.

Andreas Hafemann, President of ŠKODA China, took part in the rally in Beijing and attended the award ceremony at the stage destination Zhangjiakou – one of the host cities of the Winter Olympics 2022. “ŠKODA is one the oldest automobile manufacturers in the world, with a legendary history spanning 121 years. We are very glad to share the classic and iconic ŠKODA models, as well as ŠKODA’s unique auto culture and heritage with consumers and auto fans in China,” said Mr. Hafemann.

The Top City Classic Rally China was organized by the German magazines Auto Motor und Sport and Motor Klassik. The rally was divided into two stages: The Beijing stage involved 35 vintage cars from various brands starting in a Beijing suburb, passing by the picturesque grassland of Hebei province and finishing in Zhangjiakou. In the Shanghai stage, 36 classic cars started from the landmark Oriental Pearl Tower, heading through the ancient town of Wuzhen and finishing at the beautiful Thousand Island Lake in Zhejiang province.

ŠKODA took part in the first Top City Classic Rally China in 2014, when two vintage cars from the Czech brand – a ŠKODA FELICIA and a Laurin & Klement – became the stars of the show.

This year, the ŠKODA FELICIA was once again the highlight of the event. The car was originally produced in 1960. Over the last 56 years, the car has been painted in various colours and some parts were lost or damaged. Recently, only with great support from the ŠKODA Museum’s historical archives, technical documents and auto parts was the car fully restored and re-furbished.

The ŠKODA FELICIA is ŠKODA’s most famous open-top car model. Continuing the company’s tradition of manufacturing open-top cars, the ŠKODA FELICIA was series-produced between 1958 and 1964. The car offered elegant bodywork that became a symbol of the Czech social revolution of the 1960s and also appeared in numerous films. Whilst inspired by the classic English roadsters, it surpassed them with its driving features, universal character and driving comfort. With a total of 14.863 units manufactured, the FELICIA became the most popular open-top model by ŠKODA.

2016 marks 121 years since the company was founded, making ŠKODA AUTO one of the longest-established vehicle manufacturers in the world. The company was one of the pioneers in the industry, launching bicycle production in 1895, followed soon after by the production of motorcycles and cars at their headquarters in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. ŠKODA has sold more than one million vehicles for the second year in a row and is present in over 100 markets worldwide. The most comprehensive model range in the company’s history is manufactured at 14 plants in Europe and Asia.

Since entering the Chinese market in 2007 with the first locally produced vehicle – the OCTAVIA, ŠKODA has established a very successful partnership with SAIC Volkswagen. Over the past nine years, the partners have jointly established ŠKODA as one of the major car brands in China, so far delivering a total of 1.8 million cars to customers in China.

International Motor Show Premiere 80 years ago: The ŠKODA POPULAR Sport Monte Carlo

› One of the most important models in ŠKODA’s history celebrates anniversary
› Success in Monte Carlo Rally inspired limited-edition series
› 70 roadsters, convertibles and coupés built between 1936 and 1939
› Innovative chassis with independent suspension and transaxle drive

Mladá Boleslav, 27 September 2016 – One of the most distinctive models in the history of ŠKODA celebrates the 80th anniversary of its motor show premiere: On October 1, 1936, the ŠKODA POPULAR Sport Monte Carlo was presented to visitors of the 20th International Motor Show in Paris. Over the following three years, limited edition sporty roadsters, convertibles and coupés were developed, which are now considered among the most attractive vintage cars to have ever been produced by the brand from Mladá Boleslav.

“The extraordinary vehicles of the POPULAR Monte Carlo type are tied to ŠKODA’s successful motorsport involvement 80 years ago, which had begun in 1901,” says Andrea Frydlová, Head of the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav. “The limited-edition series was directly derived from the one-off vehicle built for the Monte Carlo Rally in 1936, their buyers benefited from the experience of ŠKODA’s racing department.”

In January 1936, ŠKODA achieved an unusual success in motorsport: The team Zdeněk Pohl / Jaroslav Hausman was virtually unheard of, however, they finished in second place at the Monte Carlo Rally in the <1500 cc class with a modified Roadster ŠKODA POPULAR. The company seized this opportunity to launch a limited series of sports models with a distinctive design – the ŠKODA POPULAR Sport Monte Carlo. Exactly 80 years ago, the model celebrated its motor show premiere at the International Motor Show in Paris.

Much like the rally car, the customer vehicles also had the more powerful four-cylinder engine under the bonnet, with a 1.4-litre displacement and 23 kW (31 hp) from the RAPID model. The three-speed transmission sat above the rear axle, forming a bloc with the differential (transaxle system). The model had a top speed of 110 km/h, and the effective hydraulic brakes completed the sporty disposition of ŠKODA POPULAR Montecarlo. In 1936, the base price of the limited edition model was 28.500 crowns, while the standard Roadster POPULAR 1.0 l / 16 kW (22 PS) started at 18,700 crowns.

The first two vehicles of the ŠKODA POPULAR Montecarlo type were built in July 1936; the last copy - a coupé with dark grey metallic paint - was delivered on 13 January 1939. Of the 70 cars produced, 24 were roadsters in a lighter version with simpler equipment. In addition, 17 comfortable roadsters were produced with handle-operated side windows instead of the attachment windows. 23 coupés, two convertibles, two chassis for the individual body construction and two suspension variants and a range of engines completed the series.

There were two roadsters that were particularly luxurious, which the Czechoslovak government sent to the Yugoslavian Head of State in 1938 – the then 14-year old king Petar II. Karađorđević. Discerning private customers could opt for the two-seater coupé ŠKODA POPULAR Monte Carlo, which cost 35,000 crowns. It was 4.20 meters long, 1.50 meters wide and 1.37 meters high, weighing in at 960 kg.

In October 1937, the facelift model went on sale, its characteristics included a modified suspension and tuning, as well as a longer wheelbase. The compact body featured many aspects of the then streamlined design; the headlights were partially embedded in the wings. Among the prominent clients were the popular actor of the Prague theatre ‘Na Vinohradech’ Otomar Korbelář.

Today about a dozen cars bear the ŠKODA POPULAR Monte Carlo name, and they are among the most sought-after classic cars produced by the brand. In 1968, the newly founded ŠKODA Museum acquired a black coupé dating back to 1937, which subsequently underwent careful restoration at the turn of the century. Since then, the two-seater has been used for presentations on the history of the brand from Mladá Boleslav, it has also taken part in many classic car events. Another copy of the limited edition POPULAR Sport Monte Carlo is currently being restored with great care at the ŠKODA Museum workshop.

Mladá Boleslav/Paris, 29 September 2016 – With a length of 4.70 m, up to seven seats and the largest boot within its class, the ŠKODA KODIAQ is the Czech car manufacturer’s first large SUV. From early 2017, ŠKODA’s latest model will present itself with all of the brand’s strengths: a design that is full of character, extraordinary interior space, practical intelligence and innovative technology that can otherwise only be found in higher vehicle classes. The ŠKODA KODIAQ marks the beginning of ŠKODA’s extensive SUV campaign.

“With the ŠKODA KODIAQ, we are striking out in a new direction and opening up new markets,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “With our first large SUV, we are conquering a new segment for the brand – and new customer groups. Our new addition to the ŠKODA model range is truly as strong as a bear: it makes the brand even more attractive thanks to its concept, striking design and as the first ŠKODA that has the option of always being online, thereby offering more comfort, safety and real-time information. The ŠKODA KODIAQ is at the forefront of ŠKODA’s extensive SUV campaign.”

ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development, Christian Strube, added, “The ŠKODA KODIAQ offers all of our brand’s strengths: well-thought-out functionality, superior interior space and excellent value for money. The largest boot compared to the competition and the optional third row of seats alone make our new SUV the ideal companion for day-to-day demands. And when it comes to driver assistance systems, infotainment and connectivity, the ŠKODA KODIAQ proves ŠKODA’s innovative capabilities, offering the technology of higher classes and therefore putting itself at the top of its segment.”

Exterior design
The ŠKODA KODIAQ is an all-rounder: the SUV is suitable for business, as well as family and leisure use – and drives off-road with ease. The brand transfers its new design language into the SUV segment with a design that reflects the car’s versatile character: the ŠKODA KODIAQ features a bold interplay of elegant lines, sporty contours and robustness, which make it easily recognisable.

All of the ŠKODA KODIAQ’s lines are clear, precise and clean-cut – this applies in particular to the distinctive, highly recessed shoulder line. Double horizontal lines on the front symbolise protection and strength. The wide, three-dimensional radiator grille is striking and conveys the robust character. The narrow, raked headlights, which flow seamlessly into the radiator grille, give the ŠKODA KODIAQ a distinctive appearance. The two double-headlights create a striking four-eyed face and stand out due to their crystalline structure, which can also be seen in other features such as the rear lights. Here, ŠKODA’s Head of Design, Jozef Kabaň, and his team were inspired by traditional Czech crystal glass art, which is also reflected in the effective interplay of light and shade on the SUV’s highly contoured surfaces.

In the side view, the long wheelbase and short overhangs point to the large interior. The wheel arches are slightly angular – a key element of ŠKODA’s SUV design language. LEDs are used as standard in the tail lights; the rear lights also feature the C-shaped design that is typical of ŠKODA. A choice of 14 paint finishes is available – four standard colours and ten metallic colours. The appearance of the components varies according to the three trim levels – Active, Ambition and Style – which are offered in the ŠKODA KODIAQ as optional extras.

Body
With its dimensions, the ŠKODA KODIAQ is at the upper end of the compact car segment. It is 4,697 mm long, 1,882 mm wide and 1,676 mm tall (including roof rails); its wheelbase measures 2,791 mm. The KODIAQ is based on Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) in which strict lightweight construction plays an important role. For the body, a combination of hot-stamped metal sheets forms the
ultra-strong backbone. With the entry-level TSI engine and front-wheel drive, the large SUV weighs just 1,452 kg when empty (without driver), or 1,540 kg with the 1.4 TSI engine and all-wheel drive.

Torsional stiffness, manufacturing precision, drive comfort and crash safety are also superior. Thanks to its highly aerodynamic finesse, the large SUV achieves a cx value of just 0.33.

Interior
The amount of space is typical of ŠKODA: the ŠKODA KODIAQ is just 38 mm longer than the ŠKODA OCTAVIA, but offers a larger-than-average interior for the SUV segment. Achieving extraordinary interior space from the exterior dimensions available once again proves the brand’s excellent engineering prowess. The large SUV’s interior length is 1,793 mm, elbow room is 1,527 mm in the front and 1,510 mm in the rear. Head room is 1,059 mm in the front and 1,014 mm in the rear. Rear legroom measures up to 104 mm.

The large SUV’s interior is also protective and robust. The crisp exterior design carries on into the interior: the double lines – with their three-dimensional appearance – also feature on the instrument panel. The interior is characterised by bold vertical elements, such as the four large air vents. The large display splits the instrument panel into two equal sections for the driver and passenger.

The high-quality workmanship as well as the logical and easy-to-understand operation are typical of ŠKODA. The large circular instruments have a precise and clear design. The steering wheel is available in a choice of different versions – one of which is heated. The optional three-zone Climatronic, which has its own control panel for the rear seats, is another feature which is often only found in higher vehicle classes. The electro-mechanical parking brake is activated by pressing a button.

Numerous comfort features are available for the front seats. As an option, they can be heated, ventilated and adjusted electronically; the latter optional extra also includes a memory function. The ŠKODA KODIAQ’s rear seats are also extremely versatile: they can be folded in a ratio of 60:40, can be moved lengthways by 18 cm as standard and the angle of the backrest is individually adjustable. Two more seats in the third row are available as an optional extra – the ŠKODA KODIAQ is the first 7-seater in the brand’s recent history.

As an alternative to the standard fabric covers, a fabric/leather combination and leather or Alcantara® covers are offered. The decor is available in five designs. In darkness, the optional ambient lighting adds an individual touch to the interior. It is built into the door trims and can be set to one of ten different colours.

Boot
With a volume of 720 to 2,065 l (with the rear seats folded down), the ŠKODA KODIAQ offers the largest boot within its class. If the optional folding passenger seat is chosen, the SUV can transport items up to 2.80 m long. An electrically operated tailgate is available as an option, and can – as an additional optional extra – also be opened and closed using foot gesture command or a button in the interior. The ŠKODA KODIAQ with the TDI/DSG/4×4 drivetrain can tow a trailer weighing up to 2.5 tonnes. An electrically retractable tow bar is available for this.

Equipment
The ‘Simply Clever’ features available in the ŠKODA KODIAQ are further proof that ŠKODA always offers a little bit ‘more car’ for your money – practical and convenient assistance in everyday life which is typical of the brand. These features include, for example, door-edge protection: thanks to preloaded springs, this deploys automatically when opening the car door and prevents the metal edge of the door from coming into contact with a garage wall or an adjacent car. When shutting the door, the trim folds itself back in. This ‘Simply Clever’ feature thereby prevents bumps and scratches to your own car, as well as to neighbouring vehicles. An electric child safety lock for the rear doors, In-Car-Communication, as well as sleep headrests are available as optional extras for the first time in a ŠKODA. All in all, the ŠKODA KODIAQ provides more than 30 ‘Simply Clever’ features, seven of which are new.

Driver assistance systems
ŠKODA’s large SUV takes to the roads with a wide range of driver assistance systems – many of which have, until now, only been seen in higher vehicle classes. Some systems come as standard, others are available as an option – individually, but also as a package.

An innovation for the portfolio is Tow Assist: when the ŠKODA KODIAQ is towing a trailer, the system takes over steering when reversing slowly. Additionally, while reversing, the new Manoeuvre Assist function will brake as soon as an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle. The system is controlled using an enhanced function of the rear parking sensors.

The Area View system is also a first for the brand: the surround-view cameras, which are located in the front and rear sections as well as in the wing mirrors of the ŠKODA KODIAQ, come with wide-angle lenses and allow views of the area immediately surrounding the car to be displayed on the monitor. These include a virtual, top-down view and 180-degree images of the areas to the front and rear. This makes it easier to drive in confusing situations or on rough terrain.

Front Assist including City Emergency Brake comes as standard and, using radar, can detect dangerous situations involving pedestrians or other vehicles in front of the car. If necessary, the system warns the driver and, when required, partially or fully applies the brakes. City Emergency Brake is active up to 34 km/h. Predictive Pedestrian Protection complements Front Assist.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is also radar assisted and helps the driver to maintain the selected speed and the desired gap between the ŠKODA KODIAQ and the vehicle in front. Lane Assist, Blind Spot Detect and Rear Traffic Alert help the driver to stay in lane, make changing lanes safer using the rear radar and help when manoeuvring in reverse. If the car is fitted with Lane Assist, ACC and DSG transmission, Traffic Jam Assist comes as an additional function. It maintains speed and applies the brakes in slow-moving traffic. Additionally, the car will be kept in lane up to speeds of 60 km/h thanks to the Lane Assist function.
Driver Alert detects signs of fatigue in the driver and prompts the driver to take a break. Emergency Assist, also only in combination with DSG transmission, is a further function of the ACC and Lane Assist combination. Should a situation arise where the driver becomes unable to drive the vehicle, the system can bring the large SUV to a standstill. Crew Protect Assist, available in a choice of two variants, closes the windows and sunroof, and tensions the seat belts automatically in the event of an impending accident. If you have an accident, the Multi-Collision Brake, which comes as standard, prevents any further uncontrolled movement of the ŠKODA KODIAQ. The camera-based Travel Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition displays speed limits and other road signs as images on the in-car computer as well as the navigation system.

ŠKODA Connect
With its infotainment and connectivity solutions, the large SUV from ŠKODA shows how an SUV can always be online. With the new, groundbreaking and innovative mobile online services, ŠKODA presents a new dimension of navigation, information and entertainment. At the same time, ŠKODA Connect helps with remote access to the vehicle as well as assistance.

ŠKODA Connect is comprised of two categories: the Infotainment Online services provide more information and real-time navigation details. Care Connect provides remote access as well as assistance.

Infotainment Online includes online traffic information, which shows traffic flow on the chosen route in real time. The Google Earth™ services (available for the Columbus system) embed the route into a topographical view from Google; Google Street View™ (available for the Columbus system) displays a street view of the destination. Map updates as well as the fuel price, parking information, online news, weather information and ‘My Points of Interest’ services round off the infotainment package. Infotainment Online services are provided free of charge for the first year after purchasing a new car and are available at an extra cost thereafter.

The Emergency Call after an accident is the most important feature of the Care Connect services: the Emergency Call (eCall) is sent directly to an emergency call centre when a restraint system is deployed. This comes as standard and is integrated into the Care Connect services. It also comes with a notification function for minor accidents as well as a breakdown call. Proactive Service is also included in the Care Connect services. When this is activated, all of the required data is sent to the garage in a timely manner before a vehicle’s service. The third Care Connect service is Remote Access.

ŠKODA now also offers the ŠKODA Connect app, which can be used to access and control additional services. For example: the smartphone will alert the owner if their car is being moved by a third party in an unauthorised manner – be that too fast or outside a specified area. Using the app, the route planner can be transferred from home to the navigation system in the car.

For the first time, the SmartLink+ app also integrates SmartGate in the new ŠKODA KODIAQ SUV – alongside the existing Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink™ standards. All of the popular services are available in just one app: navigational data, music and news, as well as all of the relevant vehicle data via the car’s infotainment system – and this is the case for every trim level.

Infotainment systems
The music and infotainment systems in the ŠKODA KODIAQ represent the latest technology. They work quickly, offer state-of-the-art functions and interfaces, and feature capacitive touch displays in a glass design – they react to the touch of a finger and not just to pressure. The basic functions are easy to operate using physical buttons and control dials.

The Swing infotainment system with its 6.5-inch screen comes as standard. It can be supplemented with a smartphone Bluetooth connection and ŠKODA SmartLink+. SmartLink+ supports the use of the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLinkTM standards in the car. When the customer connects their phone to the USB port, the relevant setting shows on the infotainment display.

The optional Bolero infotainment system features a high-definition 8.0-inch touchscreen, including the In-Car-Communication (ICC) function. The hands-free microphone records the driver’s voice, and transfers it to the back seats via the rear speakers.

The Amundsen navigation infotainment system builds on the capabilities of the Bolero system with a navigation function as well as a special display mode for driving off-road or even in narrow car parks. The top-of-the-range infotainment system, the Columbus navigation system, adds a 64-GB flash memory and DVD drive. An optional LTE module facilitates high-speed online access in the ŠKODA KODIAQ. Using a WLAN hotspot (optional), passengers can use their mobile devices to surf, stream and send emails at their convenience.

Attractive additional components round off the hardware offering in the ŠKODA KODIAQ: the Phonebox charges a smartphone inductively using the Qi standard and connects to the car aerial – both processes occur wirelessly. The Canton Sound System features ten speakers, including a subwoofer, and has a power output of 575 W. As an option, the ŠKODA KODIAQ can be equipped with tablet holders that can be attached to the front headrests. The devices can be charged using optional 230-V and USB sockets.

Engines
Five powertrains, two TDI and three TSI engines, make up the engine range at the launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ. They have capacities of 1.4 and 2.0 l, and power output ranges from 92 kW (125 PS) to 140 kW (190 PS). The diesel and petrol engines feature turbocharged direct injection and fulfil EU6 emission standards. All engines also feature a Stop-Start system, brake energy recovery and a powerful thermo-management system, contributing to low consumption despite the mighty power delivery.
The 2.0 TDI is available in two versions. The first version generates 110 kW (150 PS) and 340 Nm. The top-of-the-range version delivers 140 kW (190 PS) and puts 400 Nm on the crankshaft. On average, the entry-level TDI consumes 5.0 l of diesel (131 g CO2/km) per 100 km. The most powerful diesel engine accelerates the large SUV from 0-100 km/h in 8.6 s and reaches a top speed of up to 210 km/h.

The range of petrol engines consists of two 1.4 TSI engines and one 2.0 TSI. The entry-level version of the compact four-cylinder generates 92 kW (125 PS) and 200 Nm of torque. Its NEDC consumption is 6.0 l per 100 km, which corresponds to 140 g CO2/km. In the more powerful version, the 1.4-litre exerts 110 kW (150 PS) and 250 Nm of torque; its ACT system – Active Cylinder Technology – shuts down the second and third cylinders when the load and engine speed are low. The top-of-the-range 2.0 TSI petrol engine features a new combustion process for high efficiency. Power output is 132 kW (180 PS), torque is 320 Nm.

Transmission
The ŠKODA KODIAQ is available with various different transmissions. Depending on the engine, there is a 6-speed manual gearbox or DSG transmissions with six or seven speeds.

The new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is making its debut at ŠKODA. It is a variant that has been designed for powerful engines with torque of up to 600 Nm. The DSG transmission is a very compact construction and enables quick and comfortable gear changing.

The driver can operate the 7-speed DSG in the automatic D and S mode, or control it manually using the gear lever or the steering wheel paddles. When Eco mode is selected in the optional Driving Mode Select, the car is taken out of gear: as soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator at a speed above 20 km/h, drive is disengaged – the ŠKODA KODIAQ is coasting.

Both top-of-the-range engines – the TDI with 140 kW (190 PS) and the TSI with 132 kW (180 PS) – are coupled with the 7-speed DSG and all-wheel drive. This combination is new at ŠKODA. The manual 6-speed transmission and 6-speed DSG are the options for the 1.4 TSI with 110 kW (150 PS) and all-wheel drive; front-wheel drive is coupled with the 6-speed DSG. The entry-level diesel with all-wheel drive is offered with the manual 6-speed transmission or the 7-speed DSG; the front-wheel-drive version is offered solely with the 7-speed DSG. The entry-level TSI is available with manual
6-speed transmission and front-wheel drive.

The all-wheel-drive system with electronic control is available for most engine variants. It delivers a big increase in traction, stability and driving safety – even off-road.

The centrepiece of the all-wheel drive is an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The all-wheel-drive system works intelligently and quickly. The control unit constantly calculates the ideal driving torque for the rear axle; loss of traction is virtually eliminated due to a control system that is dependent on driving status. When in overrun or at low load, drive is provided via the front axle, which saves fuel.

Chassis
The chassis of the ŠKODA KODIAQ is also the result of concentrated expertise. The components of the MacPherson front struts consist partially of aluminium; the steel four-link rear axle absorbs the longitudinal and transverse forces separately. The power steering, using an efficient electro-mechanical drive, ensures exact contact with the road and works in close harmony with several assistance systems in the ŠKODA KODIAQ.

In the Active and Ambition trim levels, the large SUV from ŠKODA comes equipped with 17-inch wheels as standard; 18-inch wheels are standard in the Style trim level. The range of optional extras extends to burnished 19-inch wheels. The brakes – with large ventilated brake discs at the front – are strong and stable. When cornering quickly, the electronic differential lock XDS+, which is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), makes handling even smoother and safer for both front- and all-wheel drive.

As an optional extra, ŠKODA is making Driving Mode Select available in its large SUV. It allows the driver to adjust the operation of the engine and DSG management, power steering, air conditioning and other systems in Normal, Eco, Sport and Individual modes. The all-wheel-drive versions offer Snow mode on top of this, which is designed for driving on roads and does not have a speed limit. Snow mode adapts the operation of the ABS, ASR and ACC (if fitted) systems, as well as the engine management and electronically controlled, all-wheel, multi-plate clutch to slippery and snow-covered roads.

Adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) is also available as an option, and is integrated into Driving Mode Select. Here, electric valves control the work of the shock absorbers depending on the situation. Combined with Driving Mode Select, the system adapts to the driving style of the driver and manoeuvres the driver safely on the road. Using DCC, the driver can choose between Comfort, Normal or Sport modes.

And the ŠKODA KODIAQ keeps going when the paved road ends. Off-road mode can be selected by the simple touch of a button (optional for the all-wheel-drive versions in combination with Driving Mode Select). Here, the chassis, engine management and brakes adjust their operation specifically to rough terrain. This mainly involves pulling away, traction and deceleration. In off-road mode, Hill Descent Assist helps the driver to safely master driving downhill over rough terrain by braking appropriately.

ŠKODA KODIAQ Production Launch in Kvasiny

› Extensive expansion and modernization of manufacturing facilities for production launch in Kvasiny
› Seventh series expands ŠKODA’s portfolio in a strongly growing segment
› Michael Oeljeklaus: “Production launch is an emotional moment for the entire company.”

Mladá Boleslav/Kvasiny, 18 October 2016 – Launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ: The series production of ŠKODA’s new large SUV model was launched today at the Czech plant in Kvasiny.

“We are pleased that it’s now underway. The series production launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ is an emotional moment for the entire company and especially for our colleagues in Kvasiny“, says ŠKODA Board Member for Production Michael Oeljeklaus. “Over the last few months, the whole team has been preparing for the start of production of our new SUV model.”

The brand is strengthening its position in the world’s fastest growing market segment with the ŠKODA KODIAQ. From February 2017, ŠKODA’s latest model will be showcasing all the brand’s strengths: with a distinctive design and an exceptional amount of space, with practical intelligence and innovative technologies that would usually only be found in higher vehicle classes. Orders can now be placed for the new SUV in many markets.

The manufacturing facilities in Kvasiny have been extensively modernized and expanded for the production of the Czech automobile manufacturer’s latest models. In addition to the newly commissioned car body construction and the conversion of the assembly line, the paint shop and logistics areas have also been expanded.

Kvasiny is one of ŠKODA’s three production sites in the Czech Republic. Approximately 5900 people are currently employed there, making the plant one of the largest industrial employers in the Hradec Králové region. The plant is currently undergoing the most extensive modernization and expansion in its history. Over the next few years, the production capacity of the East Bohemian site will increase to 280,000 vehicles annually. In this context, ŠKODA will be creating jobs for around 2000 specialists and investing some 7.2 billion Czech crowns into the expansion of the Kvasiny plant by 2018.

Besides the ŠKODA KODIAQ, the ŠKODA models SUPERB and YETI currently run off the production lines at the Kvasiny site. In 2015, around 142,000 ŠKODA vehicles were produced here. The automobile plant was founded 82 years ago.

15 years of ŠKODA SUPERB: Brand’s flagship celebrates production milestone

› In 2001 ŠKODA revitalized the traditional name that dates back to the luxury 640 SUPERB of the 1930s
› To date, around 900,000 ŠKODA SUPERB have been manufactured
› 100,000 vehicles of the third generation already delivered
› ŠKODA SUPERB has always impressed with timeless and elegant design, optimal space and modern technology for safety and comfort

Mladá Boleslav, 21 October 2016 – The ŠKODA SUPERB is celebrating its 15th anniversary: Since the first ŠKODA SUPERB in 2001, the traditional Czech manufacturer has produced around 900,000 vehicles of all three SUPERB generations. Since March 2015, more than 100,000 of these have been produced in the current third generation, which has successfully established itself in the automotive mid-class.

With a new, expressive design and innovative technologies, the new ŠKODA SUPERB led the brand into a new era: thanks to the sharp lines of the exterior, the most modern assistance systems for safety and comfort, powerful yet economical engines, the largest available space in the segment and numerous ‘Simply Clever’ details, the current generation has successfully established itself in the mid-class.
For its extraordinary qualities, the ŠKODA SUPERB has been awarded the ‘Red Dot Award’ for outstanding product design and the title of ‘Car of the Year’ in numerous European countries. The production figures also underline the success of the brand's flagship: Since the first ŠKODA SUPERB of the third generation, which ran off the line in March 2015, ŠKODA has manufactured over 100,000 vehicles of the popular series. In total, the car manufacturer has produced nearly 900,000 ŠKODA SUPERB of the first, second and third generation.

The origins of ŠKODA’s large representative vehicles date back to the early years of automobile manufacturing. In 1907 the Laurin & Klement FF became the first eight-cylinder model in Central Europe. In the 1920s, the luxurious ŠKODA HISPANO-SUIZA, among others, was used by Czechoslovakia's first president, Tomás Garrique Masaryk; the eight-cylinder ŠKODA 860 was an impressive sight in the early 1930s. A representative ŠKODA model named SUPERB was launched for the first time in 1934: the ŠKODA 640 SUPERB. Just like the current generation, the forefather also featured trendsetting technology. The 640 SUPERB used the technological platform of the POPULAR model, its 2.5-litre six-cylinder mobilized 55 hp. The cardan shaft passed through the tube frame. In addition, advanced independent suspension was used instead of star-brakes at the front and rear. The advantage of this design was that the significantly higher torsional rigidity placed less stress on the body. Only around 200 vehicles left ŠKODA’s production halls.

ŠKODA Digital Lab: Future workshop for new digital technologies and solutions

› ŠKODA establishes ideas workshop in Prague – pilot phase started
› Mobility of the future – new mobility services and business models for ŠKODA
› Digitization and connectivity important pillars of ŠKODA Strategy 2025

Mladá Boleslav, 24 October 2016 – ŠKODA is strengthening its innovative power and digital development expertise by establishing a digital lab in Prague. Creative teams will be exploring and developing new business models in the innovative ideas workshop. This will involve integrating digital technologies more strongly into ŠKODA’s current core business, and developing innovative connectivity and mobility services. The pilot phase for the development of the digital lab will run until the end of 2016. The digital lab is then going to operate as an independent ŠKODA business entity.

“The development of new digital technologies and solutions is of central importance for ŠKODA’s future development,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier “We are preparing for the digital age with our Digital Lab. Digitization, connectivity and new mobile services are among the cornerstones of our 2025 strategy. Our goal is to develop entirely new mobility solutions for our customers. The car shall remain our core product. In the future, we will complement this with services that make daily driving easier, safer, more efficient and comfortable. As a result, ŠKODA will be shifting from being purely a car manufacturer towards a mobility service provider.”
Innovative connectivity and mobility services will make a significant contribution to the company's future sales. The requirements for this are being created at the ŠKODA Digital Lab. Customer-oriented ideas and solutions can be quickly generated, tested and turned into marketable products.

In addition, the ŠKODA Digital Lab will be developing new working methods and forms of cooperation with external partners. This will include, among others, speed, adaptability and flexibility. The experience gained from the digital lab will be integrated into ŠKODA's corporate culture. Following the fundamental change in the automotive industry, the company will be in a position to meet the requirements of modern industrial culture.
“We want to send out signals for the mobility of the future – both internally and externally,” explains André Wehner, Head of Corporate Development and Digitization at ŠKODA. “The digital lab is creating the prerequisites for even greater innovative strength at ŠKODA, and will connect the automobile to the digital world.”

The exchange with other future workshops within the Volkswagen Group will be key. The ŠKODA Digital Lab will be working closely with the people responsible for digitizing the Volkswagen Group and the brands. The exchange of experience and results will therefore benefit the entire Volkswagen Group. At the ŠKODA Digital Lab, creative minds from various fields will be developing ideas, and solutions – regardless of their parent company, start-up centre or incubator – that can be used in practice by the Czech automobile manufacturer. “With the Digital Lab, ŠKODA is taking a new path in the development of products and services. It will be important to optimally combine the learned working methods of the automotive industry with the requirements of the young digital world,” says Wehner.

The pilot phase of ŠKODA Digital Labs is currently underway. The Czech carmaker is working on this project in a strategic partnership with several development companies. IT professionals from ŠKODA and development companies are jointly developing novel technologies and solutions.

ŠKODA examined three vibrant areas of Prague, which are characterized by their creative environment, as possible locations for the digital lab. The Czech capital also has the advantage of being in close proximity to ŠKODA’s headquarters in Mladá Boleslav and leading technology companies in the country. The company envisages the workshop will commence operations as an independent ŠKODA business entity in 2017.

ŠKODA OCTAVIA in new top form: Major revision of the bestseller

› ‘Heart of the brand’ with new design elements in the front and rear
› Headlights available with latest full-LED technology
› Latest generation of infotainment systems with displays in glass design
› ŠKODA Connect provides versatile networking with mobile online services
› Driver assistance systems with technologies from the mid-class
› Five TSI and four TDI engines with high performance and low consumption

Mladá Boleslav, 27 October 2016 – ŠKODA has made major revisions to the bestseller. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA will be available from the end of the year with a newly designed front and rear section, state-of-the-art driver assistance solutions, infotainment and connectivity, as well as new equipment. The compact model is presented in top form as both a saloon and estate, and once again highlights its unique position in the category.

“The ŠKODA OCTAVIA has always been in a class of its own in the compact segment,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “As the 'heart of the brand', the Octavia has decisively shaped ŠKODA’s outstanding development from the very start, and has made the company what it is today: an internationally successful automotive manufacturer with a presence in more than 100 markets worldwide. With the now extensively revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA, we are keen to continue this development sustainably.”

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA is the Czech automaker’s best-selling model by far. At the upper end of its segment, ŠKODA’s bestseller has set new standards in terms of space, functionality, safety and comfort technology, design and value for money. In the 20 years since the 1996 reintroduction of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA, five million customers from all over the world have opted for one of the model versions in the OCTAVIA family. With the extensively revised version of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA, the brand plans to continue the success story of its predecessors and to further strengthen ŠKODA’s position in the international markets.

The lines of the new ŠKODA OCTAVIA have been further streamlined, especially at the front. The two adjacent headlights form the dual face with a crystalline look. On request, they shine in full-LED technology. The brand logo has gained even more presence, the front is more powerful, wider, and has more character.

The space available in the revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA remains one of the largest in its class. Both the saloon and estate offer 1782 millimetres of interior space and 73 millimetres of legroom in the rear. Their luggage compartments measure 590 and 610 litres, respectively; with folded rear seat backrests up to 1580 and 1740 litres respectively. There is an optional electric tailgate available for OCTAVIA COMBI.

The revision has brought new infotainment systems to the ŠKODA OCTAVIA. All four – Swing and Bolero as well as the navigation systems Amundsen and Columbus – now have capacitive displays in glass design that respond to light touch. The Columbus now features a full 9.2-inch display; the top system has a WLAN hotspot and, if desired, a SIM card module with an LTE speed for an ultra-fast connection to the Internet.

The revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA also offers state-of-the-art solutions for connectivity. ŠKODA Connect is divided into Infotainment Online and CareConnect. CareConnect is available in all equipment variants (except G-TEC) of the revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA.

The revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA is also moving ahead with assistance systems – with technologies that have so far only been used in the mid-class. If the OCTAVIA is used as a towing vehicle, the trailer assistant will take over the steering when the vehicle is slowly reversing. . Predictive pedestrian protection complements Front Assist. In addition, the parking assistant has been further optimized. Thanks to the rear radar, Blind Spot Detection and Rear Traffic Alert ensure safe lane changes and also help while reversing out of a parking space. The rear-view camera displays the car’s immediate surroundings on the on-board monitor.

New features have been added to the ŠKODA OCTAVIA’s numerous ‘Simply Clever’ solutions: a customizable key, allowing multiple users to save their own vehicle settings, as well as a heated steering wheel, folding tables on the back of the front seats, bottle holders which facilitate the opening of PET bottles, and the estate version features a removable torch in the boot.

The five TSI and four TDI that make up the engine programme combine strong performance with low fuel consumption. Their displacements range from 1.0 to 2.0 litres, the output range begins at 63 kW (84 hp) and ends at 135 kW (184 hp). › New 'Simply Clever' features such as folding tables and LED lamps
› Comfort options: heated steering wheel, customizable keys
› Connectivity and new infotainment systems with up to 9.2-inch displays

Mladá Boleslav, 4 November 2016 - ŠKODA is expanding the equipment range of their bestseller for even greater comfort. The comprehensive upgrade brings new design elements and improved operating solutions to the interior. The infotainment systems, which come from a new generation of devices, have screen sizes of up to 9.2 inches.

The interior of the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA is characterized by an exceptionally generous amount of space and simple elegance. Its horizontally oriented design emphasizes the spaciousness of the width; the lines, surfaces and volumes are geometrically clear. On the dashboard, the round instruments are large and easy to read and their new graphics give them an even finer appearance.

ŠKODA presents several innovations in terms of the materials and colours for the interior: The Ambition equipment line features a new black/brown reference combination; the instrument panel is entirely in black. The other equipment lines are enhanced with the inclusion of new reference patterns.

In addition, the inlays have been revised. For the equipment lines Style and Laurin & Klement, ŠKODA completes the decorative strips in the doors with ambient lighting as standard. Narrow light guides create subtle lighting that can be regulated in ten colours.

In the compact class, the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA continues to set the benchmark for interior space. Both the hatch and combi versions have 73 millimetres of knee room in the rear – a mid-class value. The hatch and combi models have boot volumes of 590 litres (1580 litres with rear seats folded) and 610/1740 litres respectively. If the backrest of the passenger seat (option for Ambition and Style) is folded down, objects of up to 2.92 meters in length fit into the vehicle.
For the combi, ŠKODA can supply an electric boot door on request. In addition, there are numerous ‘Simply Clever’ solutions for the luggage compartment, including the variable loading floor (from Ambition up, excluding G-TEC), the multi-function shelf and the luggage net partition. Four bag hooks come as series standard.

The interior of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA also features numerous ‘Simply Clever’ solutions and new details have been added to the upgraded model. The bottle holders in the centre tunnel console are shaped so that they interlock with the bottom of PET bottles – which allows them to be opened with one hand. In the boot of the combi there is a removable LED flashlight, which is held in place by a magnet on the body. The front seat backrests can be fitted with folding tables.

There are also two major innovations in the comfort package: the heated steering wheel rim and three customizable keys. As soon as one driver unlocks the vehicle, their personal settings are initiated. These cover a wide range of operating areas, including driving profile selection, assistance systems, indoor and outdoor lighting, Climatronic, infotainment systems and electrically adjustable seats.

The infotainment program includes the sound systems Swing (series standard) and Bolero, as well as the navigation systems Amundsen and Columbus. All four systems belong to the latest generation of devices with impressively fast operation and easy operation. Typically ŠKODA, their basic functions can be adjusted using physical buttons and controls. The touch displays react to a light touch of the finger rather than pressure. For the Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus systems, the display features a new high-quality glass design.

The Swing sound system provides extensive connectivity, including to the SmartLink+ platform. This is compatible with the standards MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This enables many smartphone apps to be displayed and used through the car’s infotainment system. In addition, the optional SmartGate feature allows you to retrieve vehicle data from your smartphone and to use it intelligently with specific apps. The Bolero sound system (series standard in the Laurin & Klement equipment line) has a high-resolution 8.0-inch touch-screen in glass design with proximity sensors: When a finger approaches, the operating mode is activated, which allows swiping, scrolling and character input.

The Amundsen navigation system can be used to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot, giving passengers free access to the Internet to surf, stream and access email with their smartphones and tablets. The top navigation system Columbus features integrated Wi-Fi hotspot and a 9.2-inch, 1,280×640-pixel monitor. On request, an LTE module provides the ŠKODA OCTAVIA with high-speed Internet access with download speeds of up to 150 Mbit per second.

Additional components round off the hardware range: Phonebox (from the Ambition line up) that charges your smartphone wirelessly and connects it to the roof antenna. The CANTON sound system (also from Ambition up) integrates eight speakers, including centre speaker on the dashboard and subwoofer in the boot. Table holders, another option, can be attached to the front seats. 230 volt and USB ports can be fitted in the rear if required.

ŠKODA energy supplier ŠKO-ENERGO strengthens power grid stability using innovative electrode boiler

› Power-to-heat technology converts electricity to district heating and saves energy during peaks in power grid
› First electrode boiler in Czech Republic strengthens stability of power grid and reduces risk of blackouts
› ŠKO-ENERGO supplying ŠKODA AUTO’s Czech plants with electricity, water, heat and natural gas, as well as private households with district heating for more than 20 years
› Safe, efficient and low-carbon energy technology is important pillar supporting ŠKODA’s 'GreenFuture' environmental strategy

Mladá Boleslav, 4 November 2016 – The energy provider ŠKO-ENERGO, in which ŠKODA AUTO holds a 44.5% stake, has today commissioned a new electrode boiler in Mladá Boleslav. The innovative Power-to-Heat system produces environmentally friendly district heating, and at the same time serves as a buffer during peak loads in the public power grid. This once again makes ŠKO-ENERGO a pioneer in efficient and resource-efficient energy production. In addition, the company is making an important contribution to the environmental targets defined in ŠKODA AUTO’s ‘GreenFuture’ environmental strategy. Among other things, ŠKODA AUTO and the company, which has been operating for more than 20 years, have been able to halve the energy consumed in manufacturing each vehicle.

“ŠKO-ENERGO as an energy provider and supplier of energy services for ŠKODA AUTO constantly strives for innovation in the field of energy production,” says Michael Oeljeklaus, who serves as both ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Production and Logistics and Chairman of the Supervisory Board at ŠKO-ENERGO. “ŠKO-ENERGO works closely with ŠKODA AUTO to continuously reduce the consumption of resources. By implementing the ‘Power-to-Heat’ project, ŠKO-ENERGO has achieved another significant milestone in innovation.”

The electrode boiler, designed jointly by ŠKO-ENERGO and the energy supplier E.ON Czech Republic - also a shareholder in the company, is connected to ŠKO-ENERGO’s modern thermal power station in Mladá Boleslav. The new system converts electrical energy into heat. The core is a cylindrical tank in which electrodes heat the water at a voltage of 6.3 kV. In ŠKO-ENERGO’s power-to-heat project, the electrode boiler is coupled to a heat exchanger that feeds the heat generated into the existing district heating system.

In addition to generating district heating, the capacity of the public electricity network can be regulated via the electrode boiler. If critical load peaks occur during periods of low consumption, the excess current is used to heat the boiler. In this way, the new system reduces the risk of blackouts and increases the security of the power supply in the Czech Republic and Europe.

Miroslav Žďánský, who initiated the project of the electrode boiler at ŠKO-ENERGO, explains: “With the power-to-heat project, we have once again expanded our portfolio and created a new important service for the network operator ČEPS - in an innovative and highly efficient way.” As an exclusive service provider, ČEPS operates the electricity network in the Czech Republic, which is also closely linked to the European-wide networks.

In addition to ŠKODA AUTO Board Member Michael Oeljeklaus, the leading representatives of E.ON Czech Republic, ŠKO-ENERGO and the other shareholders of ČEZ and VW Kraftwerk took part in the commissioning of the electrode boiler.

ŠKODA AUTO combines all environmental activities under the umbrella of the 'GreenFuture' strategy that rests on three pillars: ‘Green Product’ deals with the development of environmentally friendly vehicles – both in terms of fuel consumption as well as materials and recycling capabilities. With ‘GreenRetail’, the brand supports dealerships and workshops through environmentally friendly management. ‘GreenFactory’ summarizes all activities supporting production operations that are as resource-efficient as possible. ŠKO-ENERGO has been making an important contribution to these measures since the company was founded in mid-1995.

ŠKO-ENERGO has been ŠKODA AUTO’s energy supplier for over 20 years. The main task of the company located in Mladá Boleslav is to supply ŠKODA AUTO’s three Czech plants in Mladá Boleslav, Kvasiny and Vrchlabí with electricity, water, heat, natural gas and compressed air. In addition, residents, businesses and institutions around Mladá Boleslav are supplied with district heating. ŠKO-ENERGO’s shareholders are, in addition to ŠKODA AUTO a.s. (44.5%), VW Kraftwerk GmbH (22.5%), E.ON Czech Holding AG (21.0 %) and the energy company ČEZ a.s. (12.0%).

Working in partnership with the energy supplier, ŠKODA AUTO achieved significant improvements in CO2 emissions per vehicle produced. Between 1995 and 2014, the automotive manufacturer more than halved this figure: the energy consumption per vehicle produced decreased from 3.9 to 1.75 MWh.

The increased use of biomass for generating electricity at the ŠKO-ENERGO heating power station in Mladá Boleslav has made a major contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The heat and power plant generates one third of its energy from wood pellets, i.e. renewable biomass. Compared with the former use of coal and gas, this measure alone saves up to 130,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
