› The best rally car within its class: ŠKODA presents the WRC2 World Champion FABIA R5

Mladá Boleslav / Vienna, 10 January 2017 – An even more striking design, new equipment and state-of-the-art technology for assistance, infotainment and connectivity – the ŠKODA OCTAVIA presents itself a new, in top shape. The comprehensive upgrade has been applied to the hatchback as well as the Combi. With the new design language, now ŠKODA’s compact bestseller has received an injection of even more vigour and emotiveness too.

It is the heart and soul of ŠKODA, it embodies all of the Czech car manufacturer’s strengths and lays the foundations for its success – the ŠKODA OCTAVIA. The large compact car offers interior space that is among the most generous in its segment and brings the equipment and the technology of a mid-size car into the compact segment. Its design is striking, its quality is on the highest level, and above all it represents exceptional value for money.

The OCTAVIA is ŠKODA’s top seller: since its market launch in 1996, the Czech car manufacturer has produced more than five million ŠKODA OCTAVIAs. In 2016, now in its third generation, the large compact car made up more than 40 per cent of ŠKODA’s total sales worldwide with 436,000 vehicles sold. 255,000 cars found buyers in Europe, 4.2 per cent more than in the previous year.

The model range has fanned out: additions to the hatchback and Combi are the all-terrain OCTAVIA SCOUT, the extremely economical OCTAVIA G-TEC with CNG powertrain, as well as the RS models, which – as with the higher-end variants – are increasingly moving into the focus of customers. Comprehensively upgraded, the OCTAVIA hatchback and the OCTAVIA COMBI are now starting the second half of their life cycle. In many European countries, they will be available for order from the end of 2016.

Design
The ŠKODA design team have streamlined the OCTAVIA’s lines even further. The new front end with wider radiator grille, which has been expanded by introducing additional headlights with a crystalline look, and the even wider air inlets with honeycomb structure in the redesigned bumper create a masculine and dynamic look – and provide increased recognition value. As an option, the headlights are available in full-LED technology with adaptive front headlights (AFS).

The LED tail lights come in a choice of two variants; the C-shaped lights now illuminate in a uniform manner across the surface. The upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA has grown a few millimetres in length, and the width of its rear track has increased by 20 or 30 mm (depending on engine and rear axle).

The interior comes across as high-quality and functional, the multifunction display and the air-conditioning controls have been retouched slightly. Subtle lighting units in the doors (optional) provide ambient lighting which can be adjusted to one of ten different colours.

Infotainment systems and ŠKODA Connect
The infotainment systems in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA are part of a new generation. Their capacitive displays react to even the lightest touch. With the exception of the standard Swing music system, all the infotainment systems (optional) feature a glass design. The top-of-the-range Columbus navigation system comes with a 9.2-inch display, provides passengers with a Wi-Fi hotspot and has an optional extra LTE module for super fast data transfer. In addition, Phonebox enables inductive smartphone charging.

The connectivity features are also groundbreaking. ŠKODA Connect offers a range of new mobile online services that are divided into two categories, with the Infotainment Online services providing information and entertainment, and the Care Connect services providing assistance and support. Other online services, including remote access to the car, operate using the ŠKODA Connect app on your smartphone. The SmartLink+ platform incorporates the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink™ and SmartGate standards to pair the mobile phone with the car.

Driver assistance systems
The new generation of electronic assistance systems makes driving the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA even safer and more comfortable. They surpass the usual level in the compact segment by far – in typical ŠKODA style – and there is a wide range to choose from. Trailer Assist, the Predictive Pedestrian Protection function, Blind Spot Detect and Rear Traffic Alert are new to the portfolio. The same applies to Crew Protect Assist; it works together with Front Assist including the City Emergency Braking function. Park Assist comes in a new, enhanced configuration.

Engines and chassis
The range of engines consists of four TSI engines, four TDI engines and one CNG powertrain; they combine strong performance with low consumption. Their power ranges from 63 kW (86 PS) to 135 kW (184 PS). The 1.4-l G-TEC with 81 kW (110 PS) is a particularly economical engine which is designed for use with CNG.

Besides manual gearboxes, DSG transmissions with six or seven speeds are available for almost all of the engines; ŠKODA offers all-wheel drive for the 1.8 TSI and the 2.0 TDI. Optional Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) is a highlight for the chassis – with it, the driver can regulate the character of the suspension by selecting the Comfort, Normal or Sport modes. All engines conform to the Euro 6 standard.

Interior space and equipment
When it comes to interior space, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA continues to set benchmarks. The hatchback and the Combi each offer 1,782 mm of interior length and 73 mm of kneeroom in the rear. Their boot capacities measure 590 and 610 l respectively, with the back seats folded down it’s 1,580/1,740 l. For the Combi, an electric tailgate is available as an option.

Some new ideas have been added to the many ‘Simply Clever‛ features already offered by the ŠKODA OCTAVIA to date: two USB ports in the rear, folding tray tables on the back of the front seats, bottle holders that make the opening of PET bottles easier, and a removable LED torch in the Combi’s boot. The heated steering wheel and customisable keys in particular ensure extra comfort and convenience.

The 2.0 TDI (110 kW / 150 PS) with DSG transmission and all-wheel drive constitutes a new powertrain option – the first all-wheel-drive OCTAVIA with 7-speed DSG.

The RS models
At the top end of the upgraded OCTAVIA portfolio are two RS engine variants – the 2.0 TSI petrol and the 2.0 TDI diesel. The hatchback and the Combi combine their high performance with the great strengths of the model range and the new groundbreaking technology for the infotainment, connectivity and assistance systems.

The RS models also present themselves in the new, streamlined design with the expressive four-eyed face. The headlights, fog lights and tail lights feature LED technology; details like the black radiator grille, the distinctive air ducts, the spoiler and the large exhaust pipes hint at the dynamic character. In the interior, there are RS sports seats with leather/fabric covers (Alcantara® as an option), elegant decorative strips and ambient lighting.

For the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 2.0 TSI, the power output has been increased to 169 kW (230 PS), the top speed is 250 km/h. The 135 kW (184 PS) 2.0 TDI wows with its efficiency – over 100 km, it consumes only 4.5 litres of diesel on average (115 grams of CO2/km). The RS models are available with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed DSG transmission. The sports chassis lowers the body by 15 mm, the rear track is 30 mm wider than before. Wheel dimensions range from 17 to 19 inches. The ESC stability system with XDS+ electronic inter-wheel lock, and Performance Mode Select with the Performance Sound Generator (optional) complete the dynamic character of the upgraded OCTAVIA RS models.

The ŠKODA FABIA R5 rally car
At the press event for the upgraded OCTAVIA in Vienna, ŠKODA presents yet another highlight – the FABIA R5, the winning rally car in the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC 2).

Having started seven times in the WRC 2 with the ŠKODA FABIA R5, the Finnish works crew Esapekka Lappi / Janne Ferm scooped the world championship drivers’ classification with four victories and two other podium finishes. In total, the car won 10 of the 13 world championship rallies. In addition, ŠKODA won the continental championships in South America, Asia-Pacific and in the Middle East as well as ten national titles in the 2016 season. “The many national and international titles and victories show that we have created a real winners’ car with the ŠKODA FABIA R5.,” said Christian Strube, ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development. “The entire ŠKODA team is very proud of the extraordinary successes of our motorsport team.”
The best rally car within its class is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo engine, which produces 205 kW (290 PS) and 420 Nm of torque. A sequential five-speed transmission transfers the power to the 4×4 drive system that uses mechanical differentials on both axles. The wheel dimensions are 15 inches on gravel and 18 inches on tarmac. In accordance with regulations, the minimum weight for the rally car, which is just short of four metres long, is 1,230 kg; the price for customer teams is 180,000 euros.

› New driver assistance systems for improved safety and comfort
› Wide range of engines: four TSI and four TDI engines as well as one G-TEC engine with power outputs ranging from 63 kW (86 PS) to 135 kW (184 PS)

Mladá Boleslav / Vienna, 10 January 2017 – The curtain is raised on the new edition of ŠKODA’s bestseller: the premiere of the extensively upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA is taking place today. ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier and ŠKODA’s Head of Design Jozef Kabaň will introduce the revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI and ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS in advance of the Vienna motor show to the public during a vehicle presentation lasting around 20 minutes. With its new design language, ŠKODA’s compact bestseller is given even more dynamism and emotiveness.

New front and headlights with LED technology
The distinctive front with wider radiator grille is characterised by additional headlights with a crystalline look and even wider honeycomb air inlets in the redesigned bumper. The front headlights are available with adaptive lights featuring full-LED technology. The C-shaped LED tail lights now shine in a uniform manner across the surface. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA has grown a few millimetres in length; its rear track has increased by up to 30 mm.

The design of the interior exudes even greater quality and has the equipment to match; the instrument cluster and the operation of the air conditioning have been revised. The new LED ambient lighting in the doors can be set to one of ten different colours. New additional ‘Simply Clever’ features include two USB connections in the rear, folding tray tables on the backs of the front seats, a removable LED torch in the boot of the Combi, a heated steering wheel and a customisable key.

Helpful infotainment systems and pioneering ŠKODA Connect solutions
The controls for the new generation of infotainment systems are integrated in the glass design and their capacitive displays react to even the lightest touch. The top-of-the-range Columbus navigation system features a 9.2-inch screen and an LTE module for super-fast data transfer, and provides occupants with a Wi-Fi hotspot. Smartphones can be inductively charged via the Phonebox.

ŠKODA Connect provides groundbreaking mobile online services for information and entertainment, as well as for supporting the driver. Further online services run via the ŠKODA Connect app using a smartphone.

Driver assistance systems for improved safety and comfort
The electronic assistance systems surpass the usual level of the compact segment by far. Newly available features include Trailer Assist, the Predictive Pedestrian Protection function, Blind Spot Detect, Rear Traffic Alert and Crew Protect Assist, which works together with Front Assist including the City Emergency Brake function.

Wide range of engines, DSG transmissions and all-wheel drive
Four petrol engines (TSI), four diesel engines (TDI) and a G-TEC powertrain (CNG) are available for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI. The power output of the engines ranges from 63 kW (86 PS) to 135 kW (184 PS). In addition to the manual gearbox, a DSG transmission is available for all of the engines (with the exception of the entry-level petrol engine and the entry-level diesel engine) – a 7-speed DSG gearbox is brand new to the range. The 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TDI versions can be combined with all-wheel drive. The 2.0 TDI (110 kW / 150 PS) with DSG transmission and all-wheel drive constitutes a new powertrain combination: the first all-wheel-drive ŠKODA OCTAVIA with 7-speed DSG. Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), which can be used to select suspension modes ranging from comfortable to sporty, is available as an option. All of the engines comply with the Euro 6 standard.

RS models for pronounced sportiness
Both RS models, the hatchback and the Combi, are at the top end of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA range. The performance of the 2.0 TSI has been increased by 7 kW (10 PS) to 169 kW (230 PS). It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h. This makes the 2.0 TSI RS the most powerful and fastest ŠKODA OCTAVIA in the company’s history. The TDI engine wows with its efficiency: on average, it consumes as little as 4.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. The sports chassis lowers the body by 15 mm; the car’s rear track is 30 mm wider than that of the predecessor. The wheels are available in sizes ranging from 17 to 19 inches. The ESC stability system with XDS+ electronic inter-wheel lock and Performance Mode Select incl. Performance Sound Generator (optional extra) additionally emphasise the car’s dynamic character.

History of a bestseller
The ŠKODA OCTAVIA is the company’s bestselling model series. To date, more than five million vehicles have been sold worldwide since its launch in 1996. 436,300 third-generation OCTAVIAs were sold globally in 2016 – this equates to more than 38 per cent of the brand’s total sales. In Europe, 255,100 customers opted for the compact car – an increase of 4.2 per cent compared to the previous year.

Six wins for ŠKODA in 2017 Best Cars by ‘What Car?’

› New ŠKODA KODIAQ winner of large-SUV category
› ŠKODA FABIA receives ‘Best small car of the year’ title
› ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI awarded ‘Best Back-to-Back estate’
› ŠKODA CITIGO, ŠKODA FABIA COMBI and ŠKODA SUPERB receive prizes for best value for money

Mladá Boleslav / Milton Keynes, 12 January 2017 – Successful start to the new year for ŠKODA: In selecting the Best Cars of 2017, conducted by British magazine ‘What Car?’, the Czech carmaker was victorious in three categories, thus becoming the most successful brand in one of the most prestigious British car awards. The ŠKODA models KODIAQ, FABIA and SUPERB COMBI won the highest awards in their respective classes. The success was rounded off with the ŠKODA CITIGO, ŠKODA FABIA COMBI and ŠKODA SUPERB receiving the title of ‘Best Value for Money’ in their respective segments.

“The ‘What Car?’ awards are a testament to the entire ŠKODA team. For us, these honours are both an affirmation and motivation. They show that we have taken the right path in expanding, modernizing and emotionalizing our model range,” says ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier, adding: “At the same time, our vehicles’ success underscores the increasing appeal of our brand in the international markets. ŠKODA has performed particularly well in the UK over the last few years. In 2016 alone, we grew by 7.3% to over 80,000 car deliveries, making this our fourth largest market in the world.”

2017 could not have got off to a better start for ŠKODA. With three class victories and three value-for-money awards, the Czech car manufacturer was the big winner at the 2017 Best Cars award ceremony held by British automobile magazine ‘What Car?’ at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

“Great Sports Utility Vehicle”
By winning the award for Best Large SUV, the new ŠKODA KODIAQ received one of the most important European automotive awards shortly before its market launch.

“We were looking forward to ŠKODA’s first large SUV with great anticipation. Today, one thing is certain: the ŠKODA KODIAQ did not disappoint the judges. It is a fantastic sport utility vehicle with seven seats, all-wheel drive, a powerful diesel engine, a generous array of features – and all of that at an amazing price,” said Steve Huntingford, editor of What Car?.

With a length of 4.70m, up to seven seats and the largest boot in its class, the ŠKODA KODIAQ is the Czech carmaker’s first large SUV. ŠKODA’s latest model will be launched successively on the international markets from February. The SUV features stylish designs, exceptional space, practical intelligence and innovative technologies that would usually only be found in higher vehicle classes. The ŠKODA KODIAQ marks the beginning of ŠKODA’s broad-based SUV campaign. Five drivetrains – two TDI engines and three TSI engines – form the engine range at the launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ. Their displacement values range from 1.4 to 2.0 l, with outputs ranging from 92 kW (125 hp) to 140 kW (190 hp).

“The car to beat”
For the third time in a row, the ŠKODA FABIA has been named ‘Best Small Car’ at the What Car? awards. “In the last twelve months, a number of new small cars have been released – but the ŠKODA FABIA is still the car to beat,” said What Car? editor Huntingford. “The ŠKODA FABIA can be manoeuvred easily and safely in the city, but even on country roads and motorways it is more comfortable and refined than many considerably larger vehicles. The car doesn’t just stand out from the competition thanks to its impressive workmanship and the high level of safety but also owing to a number of features in the interior and its distinct practicality,” added Huntingford.

The current ŠKODA FABIA is now the third generation of the model on the market. It is hallmarked by its dynamic and emotive design language and sporty proportions. The small car is equipped with numerous safety, comfort and infotainment systems that are otherwise reserved for higher classes. There are four petrol engines and two diesel drivetrains available for the ŠKODA FABIA, ranging from 44 kW (60 hp) to 81 kW (110 hp). The ŠKODA FABIA is the Czech automobile manufacturer’s third bestselling model after the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA RAPID.

“Leading its segment”
The ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI also defended its title from last year at this year’s Best Cars selection. Chief Editor Huntingford reiterates the good reasons stated by the expert panel: “The ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI is still leading the way in its segment. Its performance, amount of space and comfort are crucial factors in that. Then there is its practicality and – as with all ŠKODA models – the excellent value for money. No other vehicle offers a similarly phenomenal combination.”

The ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI embodies the company’s core values in its current version and is more spacious, practical and clever than ever before. With the largest interior and largest boot in its class, the five-door model sports a dynamic, elegant and emotional design. The third generation of ŠKODA’s flagship is characterized by a high level of comfort, comprehensive safety features, high functionality and good price/performance ratio. Five petrol engines and three diesel engines with an output between 92 kW (125 hp) and 206 kW (280 hp) are available.

Best value for money
In addition to the three class victories, ŠKODA also won three categories for best value for money in the ‘What Car?’ awards. The ŠKODA CITIGO in the ‘City Car’ category, the ŠKODA FABIA COMBI in the ‘Estates up to £18,000’ and the ŠKODA SUPERB in the ‘Executive Cars up to £25,000’.

ŠKODA anniversaries in 2017 at a glance

› Construction of ŠKODA vehicles began at Kvasiny plant 70 years ago
› Roadster ŠKODA 450 and streamlined racing car ŠKODA 1100 OHC celebrate 60th anniversary
› Four decades ago, ŠKODA 130 RS won double victory in its class at Monte Carlo rally
› FAVORIT series with front drive debuted 30 years ago

Mladá Boleslav, 13 January 2017 – ŠKODA is celebrating several important anniversaries this year. The models ŠKODA 450, ŠKODA 1100 OHC and ŠKODA FAVORIT have their round anniversaries, and 2017 marks 40 years since the  ŠKODA 130 RS coupé’s double class victory at the Monte Carlo Rally.

The ŠKODA 130 RS at the Monte Carlo Rally: double victory in its class

40 years ago – on Friday, January 28, 1977 – the ŠKODA 130 RS with factory duo Václav Blahna/Lubislav Hlávka were victorious in the class under 1,300 cm3 at the Monte Carlo rally. In the overall ranking, the fast coupé took 12th and 15th place against many larger and stronger rivals. Thus, the predecessor of the current ŠKODA Fabia R5 wrote one of the most glorious chapters in ŠKODA’s 116-year involvement in motorsport.

The ŠKODA 450: Predecessor of the Roadster FELICIA turns 60

The production of the ŠKODA 450 open-top car – the predecessor of the well-known ŠKODA FELICIA – was launched at Kvasiny in September 1957. The four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,089 cm3 and an output of 50 hp gave the attractive ŠKODA 450 a top speed of 128 km/h. A total of 1,010 of these vehicles were built, around two thirds of which were exported.

ŠKODA FAVORIT: World premiere 30 years ago

With the ŠKODA FAVORIT, the development team of the then Czechoslovak automotive manufacturer provided proof of their skills and commitment in the difficult final years of the socialist era. The compact car, designed by the Italian studio Bertone, rolled off the line with a transversely mounted front engine and front-wheel drive – a revolution for the brand. The concept, design and driving behaviour of the ŠKODA FAVORIT was comparable to that of Western competitors, and was one of the few passenger cars in the so-called Eastern bloc not to be built under licence.

The ŠKODA FAVORIT debuted on 16 September, 1987, at the International Engineering Fair in Brno. The hatchback model was delivered to customers starting in 1988; two years later came the estate version ŠKODA FORMAN, followed by light-commercial-vehicle derivatives and recreational vehicles. Even electric vehicles were developed based on the ŠKODA FAVORIT. By 1995, 1,077,126 units of the FAVORIT / FORMAN series had been produced.

Kvasiny plant: 70 years of ŠKODA production in East Bohemia

The tradition of automobile production in Kvasiny dates back to 1934. The first ŠKODA vehicle built there was the prestigious ŠKODA SUPERB in October 1947. Many successful models followed, including the ŠKODA FELICIA (1959-1964), ŠKODA 110 R Coupé (1970-1980) and ŠKODA PICK-UP, as well as Volkswagen’s CADDY Pick-up (1995-2001). The Kvasiny site currently produces the ŠKODA SUPERB, SUPERB COMBI, YETI and KODIAQ.

ŠKODA 1100 OHC: The racing car appeared 60 years ago

In December 1957, ŠKODA surprised motorsport fans with two streamlined ŠKODA 1100 OHC roadsters. They were equipped with an elegant and lightweight GRP body, a steel lattice frame and an engine that featured two overhead camshafts and dual ignition. With a displacement of 1,089 cm3, the 4-cylinder engine provided 92 hp at 7,700 rpm assisted by its two twin-carburettors. The roadster weighed in at only 550 kg without a crew; the car’s top speed was 190 to 200 km/h.

ŠKODA World Dealer Conference entirely dedicated to the new KODIAQ
23.1.2017 | category: Events

› ŠKODA partners from all over the world get to know the ŠKODA KODIAQ in the flesh in Bilbao
› An event full of superlatives: 4,500 participants from 72 countries test 250 production models of the brand’s new large SUV
› New ŠKODA KODIAQ captivates with a powerful design and innovative technologies from higher vehicle segments

Mladá Boleslav / Bilbao, 23 January 2017 – ŠKODA’s World Dealer Conference (WDC) is entirely dedicated to the brand’s first large SUV: from 23 January to 3 February, everything in the northern Spanish city of Bilbao will revolve around the ŠKODA KODIAQ. With the brand-new KODIAQ, ŠKODA begins its extensive SUV campaign and enters into a new fast-growing segment.

“At the World Dealer Conference, we are beginning an exciting year together that offers excellent prospects for ŠKODA and all of our partners: the KODIAQ marks the start of a comprehensive product campaign. Alongside our trade partners, we will be bringing eleven new models to the road in 2017,” said Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing.

Just a few weeks before the market launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ, ŠKODA partners from all over the world are full of anticipation for the brand’s new SUV. A good proportion of the new SUV’s annual production has already been sold – several weeks before its market launch.

In the lively cultural metropolis of Bilbao, more than 4,500 participants from 72 countries – importers, dealerships, fleet customers and other guests – will get to know the brand’s new large SUV in all its facets. 250 production cars are ready for test drives around the Basque industrial port city. At the Bilbao Exhibition Centre, WDC participants will also get a first glimpse of other new models that will make their debuts over the course of this year. Besides the brand’s European sales partners, guests will also include ŠKODA dealers from China and Australia, and even guests from the Caribbean and several African countries.

The new ŠKODA KODIAQ is the brand’s first large SUV. It captivates with its impressive combination of a powerful design, larger-than-average interior, high degree of functionality, state-of-the-art assistance systems and groundbreaking connectivity features. Many of these innovative technologies can otherwise only be found in higher vehicle segments. With the ŠKODA Connect online service, the KODIAQ demonstrates how an SUV can always be online. The system reaches a new dimension in terms of navigation, information and entertainment, and also enables remote vehicle access via the app. This makes the ŠKODA KODIAQ the first fully connected vehicle to be produced by the brand from Mladá Boleslav.

The exterior design of the SUV is characterised by the ŠKODA-typical clear-cut lines, distinctive radiator grille and bold wheel arches. The ŠKODA KODIAQ is the first of the brand’s models to offer an optional third row of seats, allowing up to seven people to enjoy excellent travelling comfort. With a loading capacity of between 720 and 2,065 l (with the rear seats folded down), it has the largest boot within its segment. In many countries, the brand’s first large SUV will be delivered to customers from spring 2017.

Czech and Slovenian heads of government visit the ŠKODA DigiLab

› ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier informs Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar about ŠKODA AUTO’s digitalisation strategy
› ŠKODA on its way to becoming a mobility service provider
› ŠKODA will increasingly test innovative digital concepts from Slovenia
› ŠKODA seeks to intensify partnerships with technical universities in the Czech Republic and Slovenia on the topic of digitalisation

Mladá Boleslav / Prague, 23 January 2017 – Today, the Prime Ministers of the Czech Republic and Slovenia, Bohuslav Sobotka and Miro Cerar, have visited the ŠKODA DigiLab in Prague. In conversation with ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier, the heads of government discussed the future of the automotive industry in the digital age with a primary focus on innovative mobility services. Amongst other things, the possibility of collaborations between Czech and Slovenian companies was addressed. In this context, Bernhard Maier also explained ŠKODA’s digitalisation strategy and encouraged the intensification of partnerships with technical universities in the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

“The development of digital technologies, particularly in respect of mobility services, is of central importance for the future direction of our company,” said ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “In this context, the DigiLab is an integral part of our 2025 strategy, with which we are preparing ŠKODA for the digital age. We are delighted that politicians are showing an interest in the challenges posed by digitalisation in the automotive industry and that they actively support development,” added Maier.

“The digital agenda is a priority for the Czech government – and not just within the Czech Republic. It is important to view the digital market agenda as a key part of the European Union’s economic policy. It is the government’s role to support the development of modern technologies and to do everything possible to ensure that these improve the life of our citizens,” said the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Bohuslav Sobotka, during his visit to ŠKODA’s DigiLab.

With the foundation of the DigiLab, ŠKODA has strengthened its expertise in both innovation and digital development. Creative teams will research and develop new business models here. In particular, this will include greater integration of digital technologies into ŠKODA’s existing core business and the development of innovative connectivity and mobility services. With modern services for individual mobility, ŠKODA intends to develop new business segments.

During the visit by the heads of government, ŠKODA launched the websitewww.skodadigilab.com. Here start-ups can submit projects that lend themselves to cooperation with ŠKODA. Topics include solutions for smart cities, a shared economy and concepts for the use of big data.

The visit saw both heads of government highlight the exceptional importance of digitalisation for the economic development of their countries and explain which political frameworks they considered to be useful for the promotion of digital innovations. They also addressed the prospects of fully interconnected production in the Czech Republic and Slovenia in accordance with the Industry 4.0 concept.

During the Prime Ministers’ visit, Bernhard Maier announced that the ŠKODA DigiLab will step up testing of innovative digital concepts also from Slovenia in the future. This includes projects from centres of excellence and ICT (information and communication technology) start-ups, from research and development departments as well as governmental projects. Furthermore, the long-established Czech brand would like to enter partnerships with technical universities in the Czech Republic and Slovenia for specific digital projects in the future in order to gain digitalisation talent for the company.

Both countries are amongst the most important European automotive locations with plants of multiple well-known car manufacturers and numerous suppliers. Many other companies are also concerning themselves with the challenges and opportunities presented by digitalisation. That’s why Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka and his Slovenian counterpart Miro Cerar also spoke with representatives of mobility-oriented ‘digital’ start-ups from Slovenia at ŠKODA’s DigiLab in Prague. Amongst other things, in the future the DigiLab is to connect digital projects in the Czech Republic and Slovenia and build bridges between companies from both countries.

ŠKODA only recently defined digitalisation as a central course of action within its 2025 strategy. As a cross-departmental function, it will involve all of the company’s departments – from the training and development of staff and the development of vehicles using modern virtual reality and 3D technology through to Industry 4.0 solutions. For one thing, this means that digitalisation will influence the classic ŠKODA business of car manufacturing even more heavily. For another, the revenue from the digital business, such as mobility services for example, is expected to reach a similar level to the income generated from the core business of vehicle manufacturing by as early as 2025.

Digital Showroom enhances ŠKODA brand experience

› ŠKODA consultant assists customers live via video telephony in a real exhibition space, presenting ŠKODA models on the screen
› First digital showroom to combine customer experience in a car showroom with the strengths of online car searches
› The ŠKODA SUPERB and ŠKODA KODIAQ showcase the brand’s digital dealership in Spain

Mladá Boleslav/Madrid, 25 January 2017 – ŠKODA has opened their first digital showroom. Internet users can now experience a virtual ŠKODA showroom on their own computer, tablet or smartphone – almost as though they were in a real car dealership. Via video telephony, the ŠKODA consultant takes customers into the showroom and introduces the ŠKODA models live. If a customer has specific questions, such as the operation of the infotainment system, the consultant shows them how the cockpit works – thanks to mobile cameras, customers are close to the action. ŠKODA is launching the Digital Showroom as a pilot project in Spain.

“We have linked the live customer experience in a car showroom with the advantages of digital presentation, and we now introduce ŠKODA's first digital showroom,” says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “The consultant in the digital showroom becomes the customers’ eyes and ears. We open up a dialogue with future customers in their usual digital environment and encourage them to visit a ŠKODA dealership and test drive our models in person.”

ŠKODA has created a new brand experience, bringing customers and ŠKODA partners closer together: On the Spanish ŠKODA website www.skoda.es, prospective customers now have the possibility of engaging in an online a consultation with ŠKODA experts and experiencing the brand’s latest models live on their computer screens, tablets or smartphones. A simple button on the homepage allows users to call a hotline, request an immediate call back or arrange a convenient appointment.

The conversation is conducted via video telephony. The expert takes the caller live into an exhibition space with current ŠKODA models. Twelve stationary and four mobile cameras show vehicles from different perspectives. The consultant can present the exterior and interior of the vehicle, demonstrate ‘Simply Clever’ features, explain details such as the infotainment-system menu, and answer specific questions. If the potential buyer is interested in the boot, the customer consultant can take them to the rear by mobile camera and demonstrate the loading space live.

During the conversation in the virtual showroom, the advisor can assist the customer in the online configuration of their desired vehicle and the search for a local dealership. The ŠKODA expert can also arrange an appointment for a test drive in person. The customer can input text via a chat window, for example, to confirm their name, address or payment details for an ordering process. In addition, files can be transferred – for example, a vehicle configuration that has already been prepared in advance.

The top model ŠKODA SUPERB and the new ŠKODA KODIAQ are ready for live presentation in the first digital showroom. This gives users an exciting preview of the brand’s first large SUV. The ŠKODA consultant can present the KODIAQ to customers in detail, and will carry out the configuration and ordering process with them directly.

Alongside enhancing the virtual brand experience, ŠKODA is currently completing the customer-friendly optimization of the car dealerships worldwide. The traditional Czech brand has almost 3200 dealerships around the world – more than 75% of which feature the new corporate identity design at the beginning of 2017. Customers are greeted by the fresh brand appearance in the modernized car dealerships. The new showroom concept focuses on personal, direct and open communication with customers.

ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT: Robust appearance emphasises off-road capabilities

› Premiere in March 2017 at the Geneva International Motor Show
› Model-specific front and rear sections as well as 19-inch wheels
› Specific equipment features accentuate robust character
› Four engines available ranging from 110 kW (150 PS) to 140 kW (190 PS)
› Infotainment and assistance systems set benchmarks within the SUV segment
› Also travels safely off-road with all-wheel drive as standard

Mladá Boleslav, 26 January 2017 – ŠKODA continues its campaign in the SUV segment. With the ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT, the Czech car manufacturer will present a model variant at the Geneva International Motor Show (7 to 19 March 2017) that exerts its off-road capabilities both visually and in terms of technology. The rugged and robust appearance is accentuated by silver-coloured design details including distinctive underbody protection at the front and rear. The 19-inch alloy wheels specially created for the ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT also contribute to its powerful appearance. A choice of two petrol and two diesel engines is available for the new model variant, which comes with all-wheel drive in all versions.

With a length of 4.70 m, up to seven seats as well as the largest interior and boot within its class, the ŠKODA KODIAQ has celebrated a debut that has attracted a lot of attention. The design reflects the brand’s design identity and represents a good combination of emotiveness and rationality. The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT model variant clearly underlines robustness and strength with its distinct design features.

Design – silver as a reflection of its powerful character
Besides the underbody protection, the ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT is recognisable from the outside by the tinted rear window and rear side windows (SunSet), which protect from the glare of the sun. Aside from this, silver-coloured details create the robust impression and highlight the powerful character of the Czech manufacturer’s new large SUV.

The radiator grille is framed by a silver-coloured trim. The roof rails, housing of the wing mirror, the side window trims as well as the front and rear underbody protection, which is positioned beneath the bumpers and visually split into three parts, are also silver in colour.

The side view of each of the ŠKODA KODIAQ models is characterised by short overhangs, their sloping roofline that is visually extended by a line in the D-pillar, and the tapered rear. The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT is also fitted as standard with 19-inch alloy wheels specially created for this model variant. Furthermore, it bears a small badge with the model designation on the front wing and the glove compartment.

Equipment
The equipment and interior design are also tailored to the robust character. They are based on the Ambition trim level. The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT comes with Off-Road Assist, a Rough-Road package with underbody and engine protection as well as a front and rear Park Assist. The generous array of standard equipment includes Driving Mode Select (Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, Individual, Snow), which can be used to control the engine, automatic transmission, power steering and air conditioning. Snow mode adjusts the ABS, ASR, ACC (where present) systems and the engine management to the specific conditions of the snow-covered or slippery road.

Standard equipment in the interior includes a multifunction steering wheel, LED ambient lighting in ten colours, a Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIB) with eight speakers, Alcantara-covered seats with the KODIAQ logo, door trims in the Alcantara design, steel pedals, textile floor mats and the KODIAQ logo in the front door sills.

Range of engines
There is a choice of two petrol and diesel engines:

1.4 TSI 110-kW (150-PS) 4×4, top speed 197 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 9.8 seconds, combined consumption 6.8 l /100 km, 153 g CO2/km

2.0 TSI 132-kW (180-PS) 4×4, top speed 207 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 8.0 seconds, combined consumption 7.3 l/100 km, 168 g CO2/km

2.0 TDI 110-kW (150-PS) 4×4, top speed 197 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds, combined consumption 5.3 l /100 km, 139 g CO2/km

2.0 TDI 140-kW (190-PS) 4×4, top speed 210 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds, combined consumption 5.7 l /100 km, 150 g CO2/km

All-wheel drive
The centrepiece of the all-wheel drive is an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that is located directly in front of the rear differential, i.e. at the end of the drive shaft, for optimal distribution of the load on the axles. The all-wheel-drive system works quickly and intelligently, its control unit constantly calculates the ideal driving torque for the rear axle. Loss of traction is virtually eliminated due to a control system that is dependent on driving status. In normal driving conditions, especially with a light load and when coasting, the multi-plate clutch transfers the engine power in a fuel-economical way mainly to the front wheels.

Off-road capabilities
The ŠKODA KODIAQ also feels at home on off-road terrain. With a ground clearance of 194 mm, it can even negotiate larger bumps with ease. It has a ramp angle of 19.7 degrees; the approach and departure angles are an impressive 22.0 and 23.1 degrees due to the short overhangs. In addition, the Rough-Road package, which comes as standard, protects against damage to the underbody, engine, brake and fuel lines as well as cables. When the road ends, the driver can select off-road mode simply by pressing a button. The optional DCC shock absorbers change their mode of operation accordingly; the throttle response is somewhat slower. The ABS anti-lock braking system permits a certain amount of slip in order to create a wedge effect in front of the wheels. In order to improve traction in off-road mode, ASR allows a greater amount of slip, and electronic differential lock (EDL) reacts more quickly. When required, the Hill-Hold Control and Hill-Descent Control functions are activated – the latter maintains the car’s speed at the level at which the driver enters the slope.

Driver assistance systems
With their wide range of driver assistance systems, all variants of the ŠKODA KODIAQ set benchmarks within their segment. New functions include Trailer Assist, Blind Spot Detect, which warns of any vehicles in the blind spot, and Rear Traffic Alert, which monitors traffic coming from the sides and behind when manoeuvring etc. The Crew Protect Assist function, which closes windows and the sunroof in the event of an impending accident and tensions the seat belts of the front seats, works in conjunction with the improved Front Assist function, which includes the City Emergency Brake and predictive Pedestrian Protection functions. Park Assist’s functions have been further perfected. The Area-View system is also a first for the brand: the surround-view cameras, which are located in the front and rear sections as well as in the wing mirrors, come with wide-angle lenses and allow views of the area immediately surrounding the vehicle to be displayed on the monitor. These include a virtual top-down view and 180-degree images from the areas to the front and rear. This makes it easier to drive in confusing situations or on rough terrain.

Infotainment and ŠKODA Connect
The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT is equipped with all the modern infotainment systems of the new large SUV. The capacitive touch displays feature a glass design (except for the standard Swing sound system). The top-of-the-range version, the Columbus navigation system, has a 9.2-inch monitor, a Wi-Fi hotspot and an LTE module. The automatic Emergency Call function comes as standard. The mobile online services from ŠKODA Connect are the perfect addition for the state-of-the-art infotainment system. They set new benchmarks in terms of navigation, information, entertainment and assistance, and can even be configured using your home computer or via the app.

World premiere at the Geneva Motor Show
The ŠKODA KODIAQ SCOUT will make its debut at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. The world-renowned motor show is open to the public from 9th to 19th March 2017. ŠKODA will present the new model variant of the large SUV and numerous other novelties in hall 2 on the first floor of the Palexpo Exhibition Centre.

› New assistance systems and advanced infotainment services
› Four engines available ranging from 110 kW (150 PS) to 140 kW (190 PS)

Mladá Boleslav, 27 January 2017 – With the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE, the Czech car manufacturer will present an elegant, dynamic variant of its new large SUV. Design features specifically developed for the sporty model variant shape the exterior and interior. For the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE, which will make its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show (7 to 19 March 2017), a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines is available.

The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE, with its individual interior and exterior design, emphasises the agility and dynamism of the brand’s large SUV above all else. The new model variant combines its distinct appearance with the versatile nature of the ŠKODA KODIAQ – its exterior length of 4.70 metres offering up to seven seats as well as the largest amount of interior space and largest boot capacity within its segment. The design of the new all-rounder mirrors the brand’s design identity and represents a good mix of emotiveness and rationality. Furthermore, the soon-to-be presented ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE comes with features designed to provide pure driving pleasure.

Black design features underline its dynamic appearance

The bodywork elements and special features finished in black underline the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE’s dynamic focus. The radiator grille, roof rails, wing mirror housings and side window trims all come in black. The rear window and rear side windows are tinted (SunSet). The rear is enhanced by a narrow, silver-coloured trim below the bumper.
The side view of each of the ŠKODA KODIAQ models is characterised by short overhangs, their sloping roofline that is visually extended by a line in the D-pillar, and the tapered rear. The protective side trims of the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE are body-coloured. It comes with 19-inch alloy wheels in a special new design as standard. As an option, 20-inch wheels are also available. Furthermore, it bears a small badge with the model designation on the front wing.

The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE’s equipment

The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE is based on the Ambition trim level. Additionally, it is equipped with sports seats (driver’s side electronically adjustable including memory function) with Alcantara covers and silver-coloured stitching. The seats guarantee good lateral support. The sporty character is also emphasised by the multifunction steering wheel, which – just like the gearstick – is leather covered and the aluminium pedals. Display with sporty visuals includes representation of G-forces, the turbocharging pressure, the current engine output and the temperature of the oil and coolant.

The generous array of standard equipment includes Driving Mode Select (Normal, Sport, Eco, Individual, Comfort, Snow), which can be used to control the engine, automatic transmission, power steering and air conditioning. Furthermore, the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE comes with the following standard equipment: electronically adjustable and foldable wing mirrors with dip and memory function as well as Boarding Spot (lights in the wing mirror which shine onto the floor), rear-view mirror with rain sensor and dip function, a Maxi DOT display, LED ambient lighting for the interior which can be set to one of ten colours, the KODIAQ logo in the door sills, ‘Sport’ trim, Alcantara decorative inserts and floor mats with silver-coloured stitching.

Engine portfolio

There is a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines available for the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE:
1.4 TSI 110 kW (150 PS) 4×4, top speed 197 km/h,
0-100 km/h in 9.8 seconds, combined consumption of 6.8 l per 100 km, 153 g CO2/km
2.0 TSI 132 kW (180 PS) 4×4, top speed 207 km/h,
0-100 km/h in 8.0 seconds, combined consumption of 7.3 l per 100 km, 168 g CO2/km
2.0 TDI 110 kW (150 PS) 4×4, top speed 197 km/h,
0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds, combined consumption of 5.3 l per 100 km, 139 g CO2/km

0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds, combined consumption of 5.7 l per 100 km, 150 g CO2/km

All-wheel drive

The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE is available with all-wheel drive as standard. The all-wheel-drive system works quickly and intelligently, its control unit constantly calculates the ideal driving torque for the rear axle. In normal driving conditions, especially with a light load and when coasting, the multi-plate clutch transfers the engine power in a fuel-economical way mainly to the front wheels.

Driving characteristics

Adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) is available as an option for the ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE. Electronically regulated dampers can be set by the driver to one of three modes, Comfort, Normal and Sport.
All-wheel drive provides an increase in safety and traction. This is particularly noticeable when towing a trailer. But this technology also means the sporty SUV is well equipped for rough terrain. With a ground clearance of 194 mm, it can even negotiate larger bumps. It has a ramp angle of 19.7 degrees; the approach and departure angles are an impressive 22.0 and 23.1 degrees due to the short overhangs.

The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE is equipped with all the modern infotainment systems of the new large SUV from Czech Republic. They set new benchmarks in terms of navigation, information, entertainment and assistance and can even be configured using your home computer or the ŠKODA Connect app.

World premiere at the Motor Show Geneva

The ŠKODA KODIAQ SPORTLINE will be presented for the first time at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. ŠKODA will present the new model variant of the large SUV as well as numerous other novelties in hall 2 at the Palexpo exhibition centre. The motor show will be open to the public from 9 to 19 March 2017.

40 years ago: double victory for the ŠKODA 130 RS on the Rallye Monte Carlo

› 1977 Rallye Monte Carlo: the ŠKODA works team claimed 1st and 2nd place in the category for cars up to 1,300 cc
› ‘Porsche of the East’: the ŠKODA 130 RS was one of the most successful rally cars of its era
› A 105-year tradition: a car from Mladá Boleslav took part in the ‘Monte’ as early as 1912
› The perfect anniversary: at the same location 40 years after the ŠKODA 130 RS’s triumph

Mladá Boleslav, 27 January 2017 – 40th anniversary of the sensational achievement at the Col de Turini: in January 1977, the ŠKODA 130 RS, driven by the works pairing of Václav Blahna and Lubislav Hlávka, won the Rallye Monte Carlo in the category for cars up to 1,300 cc. Milan Zapadlo / Jiří Motal came second in its sister car. With this double victory, the predecessor to the ŠKODA FABIA R5 – the current WRC 2 car – wrote one of the most renowned chapters of the brand’s motorsport history.

“In the 70s and 80s, the ŠKODA 130 RS achieved exceptional results on rallies and in circuit races,” said Michal Hrabánek, Head of ŠKODA Motorsport. “This great history still motivates us today. The current ŠKODA FABIA R5 carries on the success of the ŠKODA POPULAR, ŠKODA 130 RS, ŠKODA FAVORIT and other models,” Hrabánek added.
“Cars from Mladá Boleslav have been a participant on the Rallye Monte Carlo since 1912,” said Andrea Frydlová, Director of the ŠKODA Museum in Mladá Boleslav. “The ŠKODA 130 RS shaped the ŠKODA brand’s impressive motorsport reputation thus far. Getting this rally car on its wheels during Czechoslovakia’s planned economy was not easy, and demonstrates the technical expertise and commitment of the ŠKODA designers and engineers at the time,” Frydlová continued.
In 1912 count Sascha Kolowrat-Krakowski took part in the rally to Monte Carlo in an open-topped Laurin & Klement car. In 1936, the ŠKODA POPULAR roadster driven by Pohl /Hausman took 2nd place in the category for cars up to 1,500 cc. Besides the Czech drivers, drivers from Finland, Norway and Germany also brought home accolades for ŠKODA. In 1961, Scandinavian privateer teams took part in the Rallye Monte Carlo with the ŠKODA OCTAVIA Touring Sport. The Finnish pairing Keinänen / Eklund claimed victory in the category for cars up to 1,300 cc, whilst Norwegians Gjolberg / Martinsen fought their way to second place.

In 1977, ŠKODA was able to repeat this triumph against even tougher competition. The works team had prepared themselves meticulously for the ‘Monte’ with a daily training schedule of up to 500 kilometres per car. On 22nd January 1977, there were 198 starters; only 45 cars crossed the finish line on 28th January. Václav Blahna won the category for cars up to 1,300 cc with Lubislav Hlávka, followed by Milan Zapadlo and Jiří Motal. In the overall rankings, the ŠKODA 130 RS claimed 12th and 15th place against the considerably bigger and stronger competition. The third ŠKODA team, Svatopluk Kvaizar / Jiří Kotek, had to retire due to a technical problem.

The greatest success of ŠKODA 130 RS was the overall win in the manufacturers’ rankings of the 1981 European Touring Car Championship; it had reached third just the year before. The successful era ended in 1983, when the homologation – which had already been extended by the FIA – finally expired.

The ŠKODA 130 RS was considered the ‘Porsche of the East’ in the 1970s and 80s, making its rally debut in 1975. The approximately four-metre-long coupé weighed only 720 kg. The roof, bonnet and door skins were made from aluminium, while the wings and the engine cover were manufactured from glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (GRP). A cage made from steel tubing protected the driver and the navigator.

The ŠKODA 130 RS was powered by a rear-mounted, water-cooled, four-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1.3 litres and overhead valve train; depending on the gear ratio, its power output of 140 PS (103 kW) was enough to achieve a top speed of up to 220 km/h. The technical subtleties included the twin Weber carburettors and dry-sump lubrication. The crankcase was cast in aluminium.

Last weekend, ŠKODA Motorsport repeated the success on the Rallye Monte Carlo of 40 years ago, and in doing so set another milestone in the team’s success story. Andreas Mikkelsen / Anders Jæger won the FIA World Rally Championship’s most famous rally in their first start driving a ŠKODA FABIA R5. Finishing second, Jan Kopecký / Pavel Dresler completed the double victory for ŠKODA Motorsport.

Mladá Boleslav, 3 February 2017 – Please fasten your seatbelts: the most powerful ŠKODA OCTAVIA in the company’s history is on its way. The new ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 delivers 180 kW (245 PS) – this is 11 kW (15 PS) more than the previous top-of-the-range RS variant had to offer. The powerful engine and innovative chassis technology including the electronically regulated VAQ limited-slip differential offer the ultimate driving experience. The powerhouse is available as a hatchback or an estate and will be celebrating its world premiere at the 87th International Motor Show in Geneva. The compact sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds (Combi: 6.7 seconds); its top speed is limited to 250 km/h. As is usual for a ŠKODA, the car features a spacious interior and luggage compartment. In addition, the latest driver assistance systems are also available for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245. Using the infotainment system, the occupants can be ‘always online’ thanks to the optional Wi-Fi hotspot and LTE module. Numerous ‘Simply Clever’ features are further testimony to the compact car’s practical talents.

Gloss-black features and an unmistakeable high-performance sound

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 features the new face of the brand and has particularly sporty design details. The completely new front section with wider radiator grille and the wide honeycomb air inlets in the redesigned bumper provide the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 with a masculine and dynamic appearance. The slats on the radiator grille and the trim that frames the radiator grille both come in gloss-black. The redesigned headlight clusters in a crystalline look feature full-LED technology and AFS adaptive front headlights as standard. The fog lights, tail lights and number plate illumination also feature LED technology and a crystalline appearance.

The exterior mirror housings and the trapezoid tailpipes are also black. The radiator grille and the tailgate both sport the RS logo featuring a gloss-black ‘V’ (for victory). Features such as the spoiler at the back of the hatchback or roof spoiler on the Combi are further attributes of the car’s emotive and sporty design. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 can also be recognised as a high-performance sportster acoustically thanks to the husky sound of its exhaust system.

Sports seats and aluminium design details in the interior

The sporty look also dominates in the interior, which has also been designed largely in black – from the roof lining to the footwell including its silver-coloured pedals with an aluminium finish. With their high sides and integrated headrests, the Alcantara sports seats provide maximum support in fast corners. The front seats bear the RS logo – as do the front door sills. The multifunctional sports steering wheel with perforated leather and integrated steering wheel paddles (for DSG transmissions) matches the car’s dynamic ambience. The LED ambient lighting in the RS-245-specific decorative trims immerses the interior in one of the ten choices of colours. A colour Maxi-DOT display forms part of the instrument cluster.

A lot of power, little consumption

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA’s top-of-the-range model has a 180-kW (245-PS), four-cylinder, TSI petrol engine under its bonnet – that’s 11 kW (15 PS) more than its predecessor had to offer. Maximum torque of 370 Nm is achieved between 1,600 and 4,300 rpm. There is a choice of a 6-speed manual gearbox or – for the first time in a ŠKODA OCTAVIA – a 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission. From a standing start, the hatchback reaches 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds; the Combi does it in 6.7 seconds. In addition, the engine’s flexibility is particularly impressive. When accelerating quickly in the two highest gears on a country road or motorway, the high-end ŠKODA OCTAVIA instantly delivers power. In fifth gear, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 with a manual gearbox can manage the short burst from 60-100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds (Combi: 6.5 seconds), 80-120 km/h takes only 6.6 seconds (Combi: 6.8 seconds) – a reassuring safety buffer.

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 bristles with emotion and dynamism. In the compact car segment, it provides exceptional value for money for sporty and ambitious yet practical, down-to-earth drivers.

Sports chassis and mechanical limited slip

Compared to the ‘normal’ models in the range, the sports chassis lowers the body of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 by 14 mm. Its rear track is 38 mm wider than that of the predecessor. The standard, gloss-black alloy wheels are 19 inches in diameter. The ESC stability system with Sport mode, as well as the electronically regulated VAQ limited-slip differential are also part of the standard equipment. This electronic inter-wheel lock for the differential on the driving wheels allows for particularly dynamic acceleration when exiting corners: the amount of slip on one of the front wheels is limited and transferring power to the road is optimised. The electronically regulated VAQ limited-slip differential will remain a distinctive feature of the RS 245 model. Performance Mode Select with the Performance Sound Generator function enables individual adjustment of drive, chassis and comfort settings. The dynamic character of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 is additionally highlighted by the car’s progressive steering and the optional adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC).

Wi-Fi hotspot and real-time navigation

ŠKODA Connect offers pioneering mobile online services divided into the two categories of Infotainment Online (information/entertainment) and Care Connect (driver assistance). The controls for the new generation of infotainment systems are integrated in a glass design for the Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus versions and, with their capacitive touch screens, react even to a light touch; in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245, they display a special start screen. The top-of-the-range Columbus navigation system features a 9.2-inch screen and an optional LTE module for super-fast data transfer, and provides occupants with a Wi-Fi hotspot. One of the particularly helpful services is Online Traffic Information, which offers recommended alternatives to the chosen route in the event of a traffic jam. In the Columbus system, destinations can be entered via voice control using the POI (Point of Interest) search. The system also provides news and information on the weather, petrol stations along the route (including fuel prices) or parking spaces. A Phonebox charges smartphones inductively.

Further online services are offered by the ŠKODA Connect app on a smartphone. By using the Remote Access feature, windows, doors, the sunroof and lighting can be controlled, the fuel level can be checked, or your parking location can be displayed. Care Connect also allows an Emergency Call to be made (automatically in the event of an accident in which restraint systems have been activated). The system alerts your breakdown service at the touch of a button and connects the driver to experts who can answer any questions regarding vehicle functions.

Driver assistance systems usually seen in higher segments

The electronic assistance systems surpass the usual level of the compact car segment by far. Newly available features include Trailer Assist (which steers and brakes the car and trailer when reversing), Predictive Pedestrian Protection (which brakes in the event of an impending collision with pedestrians) as a component of Front Assist, Blind Spot Detect (which warns of any vehicles in the blind spot), Rear Traffic Alert (its rear sensors warn the driver of approaching traffic when reversing out of parking spaces), Manoeuvre Assist (which brakes the vehicle as soon as the sensor detects an obstacle when moving forwards or reversing) and Crew Protect Assist (which closes the windows and sunroof in the event of an impending collision and tensions driver and passenger seatbelts). Crew Protect Assist works in conjunction with Front Assist including the City Emergency Braking function. In the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245, the proven Adaptive Cruise Control ((ACC), which helps the driver to maintain the selected speed and the desired distance from the car in front) can be activated up to a speed of 210 km/h.

A wealth of ‘Simply Clever’ features

The numerous ‘Simply Clever’ features in the new ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS 245 include special bottle holders in the centre console (allowing PET bottles to be opened with one hand), a heated steering wheel, two USB ports in the rear, a personalisable key (allowing up to three users to programme their individual settings for the air conditioning, seats, the audio system’s volume and Driving Mode Select) and a removable LED torch in the boot of the Combi; the battery of the torch will recharge automatically while driving.

The abbreviation RS for the sportiest ŠKODA models

ŠKODA used the abbreviation RS for the first time in motorsport in 1974. In 2000, the synonym of sportiness entered the ŠKODA model range. This marked the beginning of the success story. 200,000 RS models have been sold to date – a whopping 100,000 of which are third-generation OCTAVIAs and have been sold since 2013.

Mladá Boleslav / Porto, 6th February 2017 – The ŠKODA OCTAVIA begins the third decade of its success story with proven strengths and new qualities. Comprehensive revisions give the Czech car manufacturer’s bestseller a particularly striking design, a refined ambiance in the familiar generously sized interior and optimised driving characteristics. Nine engines, including a CNG variant, are available for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI. When coupled with the 110 kW (150 PS) TDI engine, the optional 7-speed DSG gearbox can also be combined with all-wheel drive for the first time. Dynamic Chassis Control is available and the range of driver assistance systems has also been extended. A new generation of infotainment systems enables the use of the ŠKODA Connect online services. The upgrade of the compact car segment models is completed by additional ‘Simply Clever’ features.

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA Press Kit including texts, photos, videos and technical data is available at www.skoda-storyboard.com.

New design features for a distinctive appearance

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI combine the typical strengths of the brand and contribute considerably to the Czech car manufacturer’s growth with more than 5 million cars sold to date. Following its comprehensive revisions, the third generation of the model that was originally introduced in 1996 once again presents itself in top shape, both visually and in terms of technology. In addition to its larger-than-average interior and its exceptional value for money, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA now offers even more of the safety and comfort features found in higher segments, strengthening its excellent position within the compact car segment.

The design modifications made as part of the comprehensive model upgrade give the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI a distinctive appearance, characterised in particular by the front section with its wide radiator grille. Additional lighting units within the headlights, with a crystalline look, and wider honeycomb air inlets provide them with more of a presence and create a masculine, dynamic and emotive overall impression. The outer headlights produce the dipped beam and the high beam shines from the inner headlights, tapered towards the radiator grille. Newly developed full-LED headlights are available from the Ambition trim level upwards.

The side view of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI is characterised by precise and clean-cut lines leading all the way to the rear section. The redesigned rear bumper appears powerful and bold with its subtle contours. The use of LED technology for the rear light cluster lends the characteristic C-shaped tail light the appearance of a homogeneous lighting surface.

As part of the model upgrade, the outer dimensions of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI have changed slightly. The hatchback has grown in length by 11 mm to 4,670 mm; the estate has grown by 8 mm to 4,667 mm. The rear track is 20 or 30 mm longer, depending on the engine variant. The wheelbase, which remains at 2,686 mm, is unusually long for a vehicle in the compact car segment. From these outer dimensions, ŠKODA engineers have created an interior where the amount of space for passengers and luggage far exceeds the usual dimensions found in this segment. Occupants enjoy generous, leg-, elbow and headroom in the front and rear. The boot capacity of the hatchback, which has a large tailgate hinged at the roof, is 590 l (1,580 l with the rear seats folded down). In the estate, it is a whopping 610 l, which can be expanded to up to 1,740 l if necessary.

The interior of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI impresses not only with its generous dimensions and great clarity, but also with its high-quality materials and new features. The revised multifunction displays are clear and easy to read. The type of information displayed on their screen varies according to the trim level. The air conditioning controls have also been visually refined. The door trims are now available with additional ambient lighting as an option. Slim LED lighting units at the upper edge of the trim strips emit a discreet, atmospheric light which can be set to one of ten different colours.

Wide range of engines, DSG transmissions and all-wheel drive

The revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI models are launched with a choice of nine engines: four TSI petrol, four TDI diesel and one CNG engine. The power outputs range from 63 kW (86 PS) to 135 kW (184 PS). The modern drivetrains contribute to the fact that all of the compact car’s variants have a good balance of driving performance, consumption and emissions. They feature a manual gearbox with 5 or 6 speeds or automatic DSG gearboxes with 6 or 7 speeds.

The TSI engines have a turbocharger and direct petrol injection. The 1.2-l TSI engine with four cylinders and a power output of 63 kW (86 PS) is the entry-level variant and is combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine with the smallest capacity in the range has a power output of 85 kW (115 PS). The 1.0-l TSI engine with three cylinders is available with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The 1.4-l TSI G-TEC engine is a particularly efficient variant which, as a bivalent engine, can run on both CNG and petrol, and offers a power output of 81 kW (110 PS). In CNG drive and when combined with the 7-speed DSG, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI have CO2 emissions of 98 and 99 g/km espectively with this engine. As a pure petrol engine, the 1.4-l TSI produces 110 kW (150 PS). The 1.8-l TSI engine is the top-performing petrol engine with a power output of 132 kW (180 PS).

Turbocharging and high-pressure direct injection with Common rail technology are features shared by the TDI engines for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI. Both four-cylinder engines with a capacity of 1.6 and 2.0 l respectively are available with two performance levels. The entry-level 1.6-l TDI engine provides 66 kW (90 PS) and is combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox. A 7-speed DSG is available as an alternative to the manual gearbox for the second variant of the 1.6-l diesel engine, which now has a power output of 85 kW (115 PS). In this combination, the combined fuel consumption of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI totals just 3.9 l/100 km.

The two 2.0-l variants of the TDI engine offer power outputs of 110 kW (150 PS) and 135 kW (184 PS). The 110 kW (150 PS) diesel engine comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and is available both with front- and all-wheel drive. A 6-speed DSG is available as an alternative for front-wheel-drive models; a 7-speed DSG is available as an option for the first time in a ŠKODA OCTAVIA with all-wheel drive.

The most powerful diesel engine is only available with all-wheel drive. A 6-speed DSG is also part of the standard equipment for this model variant. The 1.8-l petrol engine with  132 kW (180 PS) is the third engine that can be combined with all-wheel drive.

The all-wheel drive system that provides the decisive increase in traction and safety in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI has a compact design and low weight. A key component of the system is an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, which is located in front of the rear axle. The system’s control unit constantly calculates the ideal driving torque for the rear axle. Based on this, appropriate power distribution to the four wheels is maintained at all times for any situation.

The XDS+ electronic differential lock, a function of the Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC), makes handling even safer when cornering quickly – in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. XDS+ gently slows down the inner wheels to transmit more power to the outer wheels.

Increased track width, Dynamic Chassis Control

The chassis technology of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI includes a MacPherson design with lower triangular wishbones on the front axle and, depending on engine variant, a multi-link or four-link rear axle. As part of the model upgrade, the rear track has been widened by 20 and 30 mm respectively. The rack-and-pinion steering uses an efficient electro-mechanical servo drive, which also enables interaction with numerous assistance systems. Large brakes ensure reliable deceleration.

Adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) is available for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI as an option. With this system, the way the dampers work is controlled using electrically operated valves. It can be adjusted to three modes, Comfort, Normal and Sport, which can be selected by the driver. DCC also contributes to active safety by automatically switching to Sport mode in dangerous situations to provide greater stability, better tyre grip and shorter braking distances.

DCC is available from the Ambition trim level upwards (not available for engines with a power output of less than 110 kW / 150 PS). With Driving Mode Select, the driver can change the steering characteristics, the operation of the DSG transmission, and the settings of other functions. There is a choice of Normal, Eco, Sport and Individual settings, and even a Comfort mode with Dynamic Chassis Control. The individually selected configurations can be saved on the personalisable key, which is available is an option.

New variety in the range of driver assistance systems

Five new features have been added to the range of driver assistance systems for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI as part of the model upgrade. They optimise safety when driving in city traffic, on country roads and on motorways, and provide additional comfort when parking and manoeuvring. The optional Front Assist with City Emergency Brake function also includes Predictive Pedestrian Protection. The system works using radar sensors and now also reacts to pedestrians crossing the road. This function is active between 10 and 60 km/h. Between these speeds, the system performs an emergency stop in the event of an impending collision and helps to prevent an accident or at least drastically reduce the consequences of the accident.

The new Blind Spot Detect feature contributes to safety when changing lanes on multi-lane roads. It can be used between 10 km/h and the top speed. Two radar sensors at the rear monitor traffic coming from behind. If another vehicle rapidly approaches from behind or is in the blind spot, a warning LED light illuminates in the corresponding wing mirror. The radar sensors at the rear are also used by Rear Traffic Alert, another new feature which assists the driver when reversing out of parking spaces or driveways. It detects passing traffic very early on, and warns the driver first visually, then acoustically, and finally with automatic braking if necessary.

The optional Trailer Assist transforms even those with little towing experience into experts. To make use of this feature, the driver has to engage reverse gear and press the park button. The driver then uses the turn-switch for the wing mirrors to set the angle they would like to use for reversing. For guidance, the image on the in-car monitor displays a diagram showing the turning angle of the trailer. The driver then only has to accelerate gently – the system steers the car and trailer automatically at the chosen angle. Manoeuvre Assist, another new feature, offers assistance when reversing without a trailer by braking the vehicle automatically as soon as it detects an obstacle behind it thanks to the rear parking sensors.

The new features supplement the range of driver assistance systems that were already available before the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI model upgrade. These include the radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which maintains the speed selected by the driver and the ideal gap from the vehicle in front, Lane Assist, which warns the driver should the vehicle unintentionally deviate from its lane, the fatigue detection feature Driver Alert, and the proactive occupant protection feature Crew Protect Assist, which initiates safety precautions in the event of an impending collision. In addition, Auto Light Assist, the camera-based Travel Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition, Park Assist and a rear-view camera are also available.

New generation of infotainment systems and ŠKODA Connect

The infotainment systems found in the comprehensively revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI models belong to a new generation. They bring the future of connectivity to the car with completely new functions. Thanks to ŠKODA Connect with the new mobile online services, passengers have the option of being ‘always online’.

There is a choice of four hardware components: the Swing (standard) and Bolero sound systems, and the Amundsen and Columbus navigation infotainment systems. All four systems can be operated intuitively and impress with their fast operation and intelligent functions. The capacitive touchscreens, which come in a high-quality glass design in the Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus systems, react to the lightest touch. Their screen sizes are between 6.5 and 9.2 inches, depending on trim level.

Even the standard Swing sound system is equipped with an SD-card slot, an aux-in and a USB port. Other connectivity features are available as an option, ranging up to the SmartLink+ platform which integrates smartphone apps and brings Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink™ as well as SmartGate to the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI. The Bolero sound system has a high-definition 8-inch touchscreen with proximity sensor technology. It can also read out text messages and enables them to be written on the display. The system also integrates a Bluetooth connection, eight speakers and SmartLink+. Voice control is available as an option.

The Amundsen navigation system is based on the Bolero system. In addition, it comes with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot that allows passengers to surf, stream and send emails using up to eight mobile devices. Maps for navigation can be updated during the device’s lifespan at no extra cost. The Columbus navigation system is at the top of the range (available from the Ambition trim level upwards), with a 9.2-inch screen, 64-GB flash memory and optional LTE module for a high-speed internet connection.

The ŠKODA Connect mobile online services are a perfect addition to the range of infotainment features. They are divided into two categories: the new Infotainment Online services provide information and entertainment whilst Care Connect services provide driver assistance and remote access to the vehicle.

One highlight in the Infotainment Online portfolio is Online Traffic Information, which transfers live traffic on the chosen route to the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and suggests detours in the case of traffic jams. The Petrol Stations service lists petrol stations (including fuel prices) along the route. The Parking Spaces, News and Weather services provide the customer with customised information.

The Care Connect services support drivers of the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI in many situations. Data is transferred via a SIM card that is permanently installed in the vehicle. The range includes automatic Emergency Call, which comes as standard in Europe from the Ambition trim level upwards (this may differ in some countries), Breakdown Call, which can, among other things, be used to organise assistance in the case of a breakdown, and the Proactive Service, which can be used to arrange and prepare for a vehicle service appointment.

The driver can also remotely access information about whether the windows and doors are closed as well as the vehicle’s fuel level via the ŠKODA Connect app on their smartphone at any time. It is also possible to send navigation destinations to the car or have the vehicle’s current parking location displayed on your smartphone.

‘Simply Clever’: a wealth of new ideas for comfort and everyday practicality
Practical features which increase comfort and everyday usefulness are part of the character of all ŠKODA models. As part of the model upgrade, numerous additional ‘Simply Clever’ features have been implemented for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI.
