ŠKODA AUTO produces two-millionth DQ 200 dual-clutch transmission at Vrchlabí plant
30.1.2018 | category: Company

› 2,200 dual-clutch transmissions are made every day at ŠKODA AUTO’s Vrchlabí plant
› To date, ŠKODA AUTO and Volkswagen Group have invested approx. 250 million euros in DQ 200 production
› Modern seven-speed transmission is used in many ŠKODA models as well as other vehicles from Volkswagen Group
› With around 1,000 employees, the high-tech plant in Vrchlabí is among the most significant employers in the Region around Hradec Králové

Vrchlabí/Mladá Boleslav, 30 January 2018 – At its Vrchlabí plant in the Czech Republic, ŠKODA AUTO has produced the two-millionth DQ 200 dual-clutch transmission (DSG) since production began in September 2012. The DQ 200 is used in numerous ŠKODA models as well as in other vehicles from Volkswagen Group. Currently, 2,200 of the transmissions come off the production line at the high-tech Vrchlabí plant every day.

“ŠKODA AUTO’s plant in Vrchlabí is considered to be one of the most cutting-edge component factories in the industry. As a pillar of ŠKODA’s production activities and also within the production network with Volkswagen Group, Vrchlabí is vitally important,” said Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Production and Logistics, adding, “The major investments in this location contribute to the sustainability of the entire region.”

Frank Engel, Head of Component Manufacturing at ŠKODA AUTO added, “With their high level of personal commitment and outstanding expertise, our colleagues here have made a decisive contribution to the plant achieving the impressive figure of two million DQ 200 transmissions produced in just five years.”

The DQ 200 dual-clutch transmission is among the most modern of its kind in the entire automotive industry. It impresses with gear changes that are both extremely smooth and lightning quick. The DQ 200 is used in numerous ŠKODA models as well as in other vehicles from Volkswagen Group.

ŠKODA AUTO’s Vrchlabí plant is one of the most advanced production facilities in Volkswagen Group and, with its workforce of around 1,000 staff, it is also one of the most significant industrial employers in the region of Eastern Bohemia. In production, it relies on state-of-the-art technology such as cooperating robots. They help the employees with one of the most sensitive tasks in transmission production, inserting the clutch piston. The handling robot supplies dozens of machines with parts and brings empty containers back to the warehouse. Added to these are a logistics vehicle that is controlled automatically as well as the state-of-the-art ‘Transparent Factory’ IT system. The latter was successfully implemented in November of last year following a three-year preparation phase. Furthermore, ŠKODA AUTO recently opened several new transmission test stands at the Mladá Boleslav production site.

The Vrchlabí plant has been part of ŠKODA AUTO’s production network for over 70 years. The location was transformed from a vehicle manufacturing plant into a cutting-edge component factory in 2012. Within 18 months, a new factory hall was built and existing production halls were modernised. The rapid preparation of the DQ 200 production facility and the dynamic development of the location earned the Vrchlabí plant the European ‘Factory of the Year’ title in 2015. This is one of the most prestigious awards for the manufacturing industry in Europe.

In the past five years ŠKODA AUTO, together with Volkswagen Group, has invested a total of around €250 million in the facilities for DQ 200 production, including the renovation of the production halls, technical equipment, the training centre for transmission production and logistics.
At the Mladá Boleslav production site, ŠKODA AUTOa invested in the production of gearboxes too and opened several new transmission test stands recently.

› Generous proportions and three-dimensional surfaces characterise the VISION X exterior
› Large colour display and impressive lighting effects highlight the interior design
› Urban crossover will be the third series-production model to conquer a new segment
› Expanding the model range in the fast-growing SUV segment is the cornerstone of ŠKODA’s Strategy 2025

Mladá Boleslav, 1 February 2018 – The Czech car manufacturer is presenting an outlook on the further development of their model range with the hybrid study ŠKODA VISION X. The concept of the urban crossover transfers the characteristic features of ŠKODA’s successful SUV models to another vehicle segment. The ŠKODA VISION X is celebrating its world premiere at the International Motor Show 2018 in Geneva.

With its compact proportions, the ŠKODA VISION X is presented as the ideal companion for an active, urban lifestyle. Precise lines and clear surface contours characterise the exterior and highlight the dynamic character of the FlexGreen-painted hybrid study. A roof in contrasting Anthracite sets sporty accents. In addition, distinctive bumpers, dominant side sills, a large panoramic glass roof and 20-inch alloy wheels create a powerful look. The sharp design was inspired by traditional Czech glasswork.

The interior of the ŠKODA VISION X defines a fundamentally new design language. The wide, ergonomically contoured dashboard with freestanding colour display dominates the visual impression in the interior. The infotainment and connectivity services can be accessed quickly and intuitively via the screen. Updated ŠKODA FABIA makes its debut at Geneva Motor Show 2018

› ŠKODA FABIA gets redesigned front and rear end including LED head and rear lights
› Four lively and efficient 1.0 engines to choose from
› Additional assistance systems, ‘Swing’ infotainment system with 6.5-inch display and more ‘Simply Clever’ features

Mladá Boleslav, 8 February 2018 – The ŠKODA FABIA is embarking on the next chapter of its success story with wide-ranging enhancements in terms of both design and technology. The popular small car made by the Czech carmaker will now boast even greater appeal thanks to restyled front and rear sections, the introduction of LED head and rear lights, as well as a refined interior. Lively and efficient 1.0 gasoline engines, as well as additional assistance systems underline the sophisticated character of the ŠKODA FABIA. The revised model is being unveiled at the International Motor Show 2018 in Geneva. The market launch is in the second half of 2018.

New design highlights inside and out

Front and rear design updates produce a remarkably high-class appearance, while headlights and front fog lights with new outlines and state-of-the-art lighting technology also freshen up the look of the car. LED headlights and LED rear lights are now being offered for the ŠKODA FABIA for the first time. The choice of alloy wheels has been extended too, including the addition of 18-inch wheels for the hatchback. The redesigned instrument cluster, new trim strips for the dashboard and two-tone finishes for the seats help to give the interior a more noble feel.

Economical and lively petrol engines

The line-up of engines for the ŠKODA FABIA will consist of four petrol drivetrains, each with three cylinders and a capacity of 1.0 litre, whose performance is as eager as it is efficient. The MPI engines feature indirect injection and produce outputs of 44 kW (60 hp) and 55 kW (75 hp) respectively. The two TSI drivetrains are both packed with advanced engineering, including turbocharging and direct petrol injection, enabling them to generate 70 kW (95 hp) and 81 kW (110 hp). Both TSI engines are fitted with gasoline particulate filter. The most powerful of the quartet of engines can be matched with a seven-speed DSG gearbox as an option.

By concentrating on sophisticated petrol engines for its drivetrain portfolio, ŠKODA is paying careful consideration to the requirements of the target groups in the small car segment. Boasting further improved economy and exceptional emissions performance, the state-of-the-art three-cylinder power units are on a par with frugal diesel engines for fuel efficiency.

New driver assistance systems for increased safety and convenience

By expanding the choice of driver assistance systems, ŠKODA AUTO has once again transferred advanced technology from higher vehicle classes to the small car segment. The new Blind Spot Detection feature alerts the driver to the presence of vehicles in the blind spot or approaching rapidly from behind when driving on multi-lane highways. The Rear Traffic Alert system monitors what is going on behind the vehicle and warns of a risk of collision when reversing. Another newly available feature is Light Assist, which automatically switches to low beam as soon as the system detects oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead.

Infotainment system ‘Swing’ now with 6.5-inch display and ŠKODA Connect

The infotainment system ‘Swing’ now offers a 6.5-inch display and also allows drivers to use the full range of mobile online services from ŠKODA Connect. When equipped with the ’Amundsen ’ navigation system, the ŠKODA FABIA will also now offer the Online Traffic Information service with real-time information on traffic holdups. Meanwhile, innovative SmartLink+ technology makes it possible to enjoy all the benefits of the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLinkTM and SmartGate standards.

Even greater variety of ‘Simply Clever’ features

The brand’s signature characteristics that set the ŠKODA FABIA apart in the small car segment include a wealth of practical touches designed to increase comfort and functionality in day-to-day use. An even greater number of these ’Simply Clever‘ features is now available. The ice scraper concealed in the fuel filler flap now incorporates, as a new function, a gauge for measuring the tyre tread depth. The car can also be equipped with USB ports for the rear-seat passengers for added comfort. Customers can also opt for a double-sided boot mat. The side compartment in the boot of the ŠKODA FABIA COMBI also features a portable LED flashlight.

Important part of the ŠKODA model portfolio

The ŠKODA FABIA plays a key role in the Czech carmaker’s current model range. Its trademark brand qualities have turned it into an international bestseller in the small car segment, while it has also provided the basis for ŠKODA’s most recent successes in the world of rallying. Since 1999, over four million units of the ŠKODA FABIA have been sold worldwide, with the current third model generation alone accumulating sales in excess of the 500,000 mark. As a result, the ŠKODA FABIA is presently ranked third in the brand’s list of best-selling model series. The main markets for the hatchback model are Germany, UK and Poland, whereas the ŠKODA FABIA COMBI is particularly popular in Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland.

On ŠKODA Storyboard you will find an article on this topic as well as an interview with Jiří Hadaščok, coordinator of exterior design at ŠKODA AUTO.

Mladá Boleslav / Geneva, 22 February 2018 – The Czech car manufacturer ŠKODA will present numerous model updates at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. At the exhibition, the spotlight will be on the world premiere of the ŠKODA VISION X design study, which offers a look ahead to further developments in the model range. The extensively revised ŠKODA FABIA will be making its debut and the ŠKODA KODIAQ L&K, the new range-topping variant of the popular SUV model line-up, will be presented to the public for the first time. The ŠKODA SUPERB will be available with a new 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine and 7 speed DSG, and the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS comes with a Challenge Plus package. All direct-injection petrol engines are fitted with petrol particulate filters. In addition, the digital instrument panel has been introduced to the OCTAVIA, KODIAQ and SUPERB model ranges.

ŠKODA AUTO is keeping a close eye on the future. The Czech car manufacturer’s appearance at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show (8–18 March 2018) also illustrates this. The centrepiece of the ŠKODA stand is the Innovation Tunnel, where detailed and interactive displays inform visitors about the VISION X study. On the right side of the tunnel smart solutions will be visible. Through a story it will be possible to get information about the ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab apps, the longboard and other new elements. On the opposite side materials used in vehicle production will be shown. The design of interior surfaces will be on show, as will the high quality of the components that have been used. The materials used in the exterior can also be experienced in a variety of ways in the Innovation Tunnel. In addition, ŠKODA is giving visitors a glimpse into the brand’s current connectivity and mobility services. At the end of the tunnel, displays and tablets also provide visitors in an interactive way with comprehensive information about the VISION X concept study.

ŠKODA VISION X: an emotionally rich study that focuses on automotive sustainability and agility
In addition to its vision of a modern crossover, the Czech car manufacturer is also providing a glimpse of a third model for the successful SUV family with the ŠKODA VISION X. The study transfers the brand-typical design language used in the SUV models into a further vehicle segment. The VISION X also features crystalline design accents inspired by traditional Bohemian glass art. The large touchscreen display is new and enables a new operating concept in terms of infotainment and connectivity. The hybrid drive concept is particularly innovative: it couples a CNG-powered (compressed natural gas), four-cylinder, turbo engine with an electric drive and thereby allows for particularly low fuel consumption and emissions.

ŠKODA FABIA: bestseller in the small car segment with an extensive range of new features
The comprehensively revised ŠKODA FABIA is also making an attractive entrance. A modified design at the front and rear provide the exterior with an appearance that is as elegant as it is dynamic and modern. In addition, LED headlights and LED rear lights are available for the first time. Inside, a newly designed instrument cluster and redesigned seats provide fresh visual highlights. The range of driver assistance systems and ‘Simply Clever’ features has also been expanded once more. From now on, the ŠKODA FABIA and ŠKODA FABIA COMBI will be powered by responsive and efficient petrol engines. There is a choice of four engines with power outputs ranging from 60 to 110 PS.

ŠKODA KODIAQ L&K: the exclusive, range-topping variant of the successful SUV model line-up
Distinct design features and a range of exclusive equipment as standard set the ŠKODA KODIAQ L&K apart. The top-of-the-line variant of the large SUV features 19-inch ‘Sirius’ alloy wheels, full-LED headlights, a radiator grille with chromed slats as well as model-specific front and rear bumpers. In the interior, the leather upholstery and uniquely designed decorative strips emphasise the elegant and stylish tone of the ŠKODA KODIAQ L&K. The large SUV’s engine portfolio has also been updated for the market launch of the ŠKODA KODIAQ L&K. A 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110 kW (150 PS) is new to the range, as is the 2.0-litre TSI engine with 140 kW (190 PS).

ŠKODA SUPERB and ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS to provide even greater driving fun
In Geneva, a new powertrain is making its debut for the ŠKODA SUPERB. The 2.0-litre TSI engine produces 200 kW (272 PS), which is transferred by an equally new 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. In addition, from now on a selection of new specification features will be available for the ŠKODA SUPERB, including the KESSY extended security function (Keyless Entry, Start and Exit System) or the ambient lighting, which is connected to Driving Mode Select.

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS provides pure driving fun. In Geneva, it is being shown for the first time with the optional Challenge Plus package, which consists of exclusive design and equipment features for both the interior and exterior. From summer 2018, the sporty top-of-the-range variant of the bestseller will feature a 180-kW (245-PS) TSI engine providing dynamic drive. The electronically regulated VAQ limited-slip differential brings the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS’s sporty ambitions to the fore.

Digital instrument panel available for additional ŠKODA models
The digital instrument panel first introduced in the ŠKODA KAROQ compact SUV will be available for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA, ŠKODA SUPERB and ŠKODA KODIAQ. The panel’s displays can be individually programmed; there’s a choice of different layouts. The size and positioning of the information displayed can also be freely configured. In addition to speed, rpm, fuel gauge or the navigational destination, information about the sound system, telephone or assistance systems can also be displayed on the screen behind the steering wheel.

World premiere in Geneva: ŠKODA VISION X study combines CNG, petrol and electric drive

› Czech manufacturer’s urban crossover study gives an outlook on the future of the automobile
› ŠKODA VISION X is the first hybrid vehicle in ŠKODA’s history with natural gas, petrol and electric drive
› CO2 emissions of only 89 g/km
› ŠKODA’s first all-wheel drive without cardan shaft

Mladá Boleslav, 28 February 2018 – ŠKODA AUTO looks into the future of the automotive world at the Geneva Motor Show 2018 (6 – 18 March). The Czech automobile manufacturer is presenting a vehicle with CNG, petrol and electric drive for the first time. In addition to the further developed SUV design language, the ŠKODA VISION X also features a newly configured hybrid system. The particularly sustainable drive concept with a CNG/electric engine combination ensures spontaneous power delivery, increased agility and low CO2 emissions of only 89 g/km. The VISION X drives with front, rear or four-wheel drive as needed.

"At ŠKODA AUTO, the developments and preparations for the mobility of tomorrow are in full swing," says Christian Strube, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Technical Development. "With the ŠKODA VISION X hybrid study, we offer an outlook on the further development of our model range. CNG vehicles are clean and inexpensive. Moreover, with the hybrid, our customers can experience zero-emission driving.”

The particularly sustainable drive concept of the FlexGreen-painted urban crossover study features an impressive combination of a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and petrol-powered drivetrain and two electric motors. The new technology keeps CO2 emissions low at only 89 g/km.

The internal combustion engine is a 1.5-litre TSI G-TEC four-cylinder turbocharged engine specifically designed for use with CNG (compressed natural gas). The CNG drive produces a maximum output of 96 kW (130 hp) and a maximum torque of 250 Nm. One CNG tank is located under the rear seat; the second behind the rear axle. The CNG unit drives the front axle; an electric motor drives the rear axle. This is activated as needed – to engage additional power when starting (boost effect) or to improve the traction on smooth surfaces and off-road. The capacity of the compact energy storage unit for the electric motor is sufficient to drive the concept study over a distance of up to two kilometres on electric power alone.

The VISION X is ŠKODA’s first all-wheel-drive vehicle without a cardan shaft. This has clear benefits: Lower weight automatically means less consumption. In addition, the electric motor only starts when needed. Two electric motors support the CNG drive. The four-wheel drive consist of the combustion engine equipped with one of the two electric motors – a belt-driven starter-generator (BSG) and the second electric motor on the rear axle, powered by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery system. Thanks to recuperation, the lithium-ion battery charges while driving: During braking and rolling, the VISION X converts kinetic energy into electrical energy and uses this energy later for driving. The maximum torque of 70 Nm is available from standstill, noticeably intensifying the spontaneity when starting and the agility in short bursts of speed. The advantages of the rechargeable batteries include low weight, higher capacity and affordable price.

The study drives with front, rear or four-wheel drive as needed. The rear-wheel-drive brings 1000 Nm to the road, and the model has a range of up to 650 kilometres thanks to the additional petrol reserve tank.

The system performance of the two drive units enables the ŠKODA VISION X to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.3 seconds, with a top speed of 200 km/h. Electro-mobility strategy Electro-mobility plays a crucial role in ŠKODA AUTO's global growth strategy. The electrification of ŠKODA’s model range will start in 2019 with the introduction of the ŠKODA SUPERB with plug-in hybrid drive. In addition to the production of electric cars, the plant in Mladá Boleslav will also be producing electrical components for the plug-in hybrid models of several Volkswagen Group brands from 2019 onwards. The first fully electric ŠKODA production vehicle will follow shortly afterwards. By 2025, the brand will have expanded its range of hybrid and battery-powered models in various segments.
