ŠKODA offers prospects of cooperation to 'International Smart Mobility Hackathon' winning teams

› ŠKODA is the official partner of International Smart Mobility Hackathon in Prague
› Event with 20 teams from 13 countries started at ŠKODA DigiLab
› Winning team created solutions for effective use of public transport
› Team Incinity receives ŠKODA Partner Prize for Smart Mobility project in cities
› Car manufacturer’s think tank analyses and develops ideas for mobility of the future

Mladá Boleslav, 20 March 2017 – In a total of 48 hours at the four-day event, which took place from 16 to 19 March, the participants developed new ideas for smart cities and the mobility of the future without interruption. The successful teams have been given the opportunity to further develop their projects with the ŠKODA DigiLab. The team Incinity has also won the ŠKODA Partner Prize and can spend a weekend with a ŠKODA KODIAQ.

"ŠKODA is firmly committed to establishing new digital business segments alongside traditional automotive production. We are also seeking dialogues with creative minds outside the company," says Andre Wehner, ŠKODA’s Chief Digital Officer. "At the Hackathon for Smart Mobility solutions, the participants presented many interesting ideas for smart cities. The work presented illustrates the extent to which connectivity and digital services will shape and facilitate our mobility in the future. Now I am looking forward to working with the winners at the DigiLab to develop more ideas.”

How can urban pollution be reduced? What will be the role of electric vehicles? And how can charging technology as well as network expansion make this technology even more attractive for active large cities? Might autonomous vehicles provide further incentives? And how do passengers pass the time when they are no longer steering the wheel themselves? These and other questions were addressed by the participants at the 'International Smart Mobility Hackathon' in Prague.

20 teams from 13 nations developed creative concepts for smart cities, green mobility and connectivity at the four-day event from 16 to 19 March 2017. Each group consisted of a creative director, a designer and a programmer. After the trio had got to know each other and a topic had been selected, the 48-hour creative marathon began on Friday. First, the group’s visionary thought up possible solutions to the respective problem in consultation with the teammates. The designer assessed the technical feasibility and drew up illustrative examples. The programmer took care of the final implementation. After two days of hard thinking, keyboard tapping and rapid development, the Hackathon teams presented their results to a renowned jury. These ranged from product prototypes and beta systems to almost fully rolled-out smartphone apps. The most innovative idea came from team RED, which consisted of students at the Technical University in Prague. The creative team presented their solution for the effective use of public transport.

The winning team takes home prize money of 5,000 euros from the organizer CEE Hacks Insane Business Ideas. The Czech manufacturer is also planning future cooperation with the ŠKODA DigiLab in the development of specific new projects.

The mayor of Prague, Adriana Krnáčová, was the patron of the 'International Smart Mobility Hackathon'. As the official partner, ŠKODA opened the event on 16 March at its DigiLab in the Czech capital. The think tank is conceptualised as a responsive information-technology start-up to analyse and develop new business models, solutions and products. The manufacturer also works intensively with external creative minds. At www.skodadigilab.com, developers, programmers and others can present promising projects, which lend themselves to cooperation with ŠKODA.

2016 ŠKODA achieves new records in vehicle sales and financial results

› Worldwide deliveries of 1,126,500 vehicles reach new highs (+ 6.7%)
› ŠKODA achieves new record sales revenue of 13.7 billion euros (+ 9.8%)
› Operating profit grows by 30.8 percent to 1.197 billion euros
› New best value in the strongest single market: 317,100 deliveries in China
› ŠKODA is on course for growth: Best January and February of all time with 174,900 deliveries
› ŠKODA continues product campaign in 2017, presenting eleven model innovations

Mladá Boleslav, 22 March 2017 – ŠKODA’s record performance continues. The Czech carmaker achieved new best values in 2016, both in terms of global vehicle sales and financial results. Compared to the previous year, deliveries rose by 6.7% to 1,126,500 vehicles (2015: 1,055,500). In the same period, sales revenue also increased by 9.8% to 13.7 billion euros (2015: 12.5 billion euros), thereby also reaching a new record high. The traditional Czech brand recorded an increase of 30.8% in operating profit at 1.197 billion euros (2015: 915 million euros). ŠKODA has set the course for further growth with Strategy 2025 and the associated model campaign. The brand expects additional growth impetus in particular from the introduction of the new ŠKODA KODIAQ SUV, the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA as well as other new models the company will be presenting in the course of the year.

"The results of the 2016 financial year exceeded our expectations. Achieving three record years in a row demonstrates the success of our sustainable growth strategy,” says ŠKODA CEO, Bernhard Maier. “With our Strategy 2025, we will consistently promote the growth of the ŠKODA brand over the coming years. In this context, we will renew and expand our model portfolio, and open up new markets, segments and digital business areas. We will also be focusing on the electrification of our vehicles. We are going to launch the first purely battery-powered ŠKODA model on the market in 2020. A first idea of how the electric future of ŠKODA might look will be presented at the motor show in Shanghai.”

Digitization, connectivity and new mobile services are among the cornerstones of Strategy 2025. Our aim is to develop completely new mobility services for ŠKODA customers. “The car will remain the core of our offer. We will be complementing this with services that make daily driving easier, safer, more comfortable and efficient. ŠKODA will be transitioning from being purely a car manufacturer to a mobility services provider. One component of this future-oriented strategy is the new ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab in Prague, with which we are strengthening our innovation and digital development expertise,“ Maier continued.

"Our profitable growth is primarily based on four pillars: a higher number of vehicles delivered, the utilization of capacities of our plants, an improved model mix, and optimized product costs," says ŠKODA CFO Klaus-Dieter Schürmann.

ŠKODA achieved new best figures in sales revenue and operating profit in the 2016 financial year. Sales revenue grew to 13.7 billion euros (2015: 12.5 billion euros), thus surpassing the previous record figure set in 2015 by 9.8%. Operating profit increased by 30.8% to 1.197 billion euros (2015: 915 million euros). This corresponds to 8.7% of the sales revenue (2015: 7.3%).

The profit before tax rose by 38.7% to 1.173 billion euros (2015: 846 million euros). After tax, the profit for 2016 was 951 million euros (2015: 708 million euros), 34.3% above the previous year. Investments amounted to 548 million euros in 2016 (2015: 591 million euros).

ŠKODA delivered a new record number of 1,126,500 vehicles to customers worldwide in 2016. This corresponds to an increase of around 71,000 vehicles or 6.7% compared to 2015 (1,055,500 deliveries). ŠKODA’s sales reached new highs in numerous key markets such as China (317,100), Germany (165,200), Great Britain (80,300) and Poland (56,200). In Turkey (28,900), France (23,000) and Israel (20,400), more people than ever before received a new ŠKODA car in 2016.

Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the successful partnership between the Volkswagen Group and the traditional Czech brand; a period in which ŠKODA transformed from being a regional market leader into an internationally successful car manufacturer. The product highlight of 2016 was the world premiere of the new large SUV ŠKODA KODIAQ in Berlin and its subsequent trade-fair debut at the Paris Motor Show. The KODIAQ marks the launch of the Czech carmaker’s broad SUV campaign with which the company intends to reach new customers and segments, expand its market shares and strengthen its position on the global markets.

"The success of the ŠKODA brand in the 2016 fiscal year can be attributed to the great commitment of the entire workforce. We would like to thank all our employees as well as the KOVO trade union, which constructively supported the company's growth throughout 2016," says Bohdan Wojnar ŠKODA Board Member for HR.

"ŠKODA greatly appreciates the efforts of its employees, which is also reflected in their remuneration. The average wage at the company has increased by 30% since 2010. We are also intensively preparing our employees for the future challenges related to Industry 4.0, especially with regard to developing their IT skills," adds Wojnar.

ŠKODA has also made a strong start to 2017. In January and February, the brand achieved new records, increasing its deliveries to customers in the first two months by 2.7% to 174,900 units (2016: 172,300 vehicles). In March, the extensively revised OCTAVIA, RAPID, RAPID SPACEBACK and CITIGO series, as well as the KODIAQ SCOUT and KODIAQ SPORTLINE, OCTAVIA RS 245 and OCTAVIA SCOUT model versions celebrated their world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. ŠKODA will be presenting a total of eleven model innovations in 2017.

World Water Day: ŠKODA campaigns for sustainable water management

› ŠKODA’s water consumption has reduced to 2010 levels; during this period, production increased by 25 per cent
› 40 per cent of ŠKODA’s total water consumption is recycled
› ŠKODA is preparing further expansion of the most up-to-date technology for sustainable production
› ‘GreenFuture’ strategy combines the brand’s environmental protection activities and objectives

Mladá Boleslav, 22 March 2017 – ŠKODA has been involved in sustainable production for many years and is pressing ahead with numerous projects to conserve natural resources as part of its ‘GreenFuture’ strategy. These include saving as much water as possible. To mark World Water Day, which is being promoted today by the United Nations on the topic of ‘wastewater’, the Czech car manufacturer is introducing several initiatives.

Water is essential component in vehicle production where is used during washing and filtering processes as well as in numerous cooling systems. ŠKODA has been developing innovative technologies and concepts for sustainable water management for many years.

During vehicle production, the manufacturer uses special measures which prevent disproportionate increases in water usage and warn of possible leaks and unusual flows. In the paint shops, modern filtration systems recycle wastewater and recirculate it. In the future, a more sophisticated purification system that uses particularly thin membrane filters is expected to reduce the requirement for fresh water further still. ŠKODA intends to save an additional 60,000 cubic metres of water, which corresponds to four per cent of the entire annual consumption.

Employees are also contributing to sustainability at ŠKODA. On the internal portal ‘Green Z.E.B.R.A’, suggestions are regularly put forward concerning environmentally friendly activities. These measures improve the ecological balance for the company: since 2013, resources, materials or energies valued 1.6 million euros are being saved every year.

At present, ŠKODA’s water consumption of 1.5 million cubic metres is at 2010 levels, whilst production figures during this period have increased by around 25 per cent. 590,000 cubic metres of water are recycled annually – this equates to 40 per cent of the company’s overall consumption. The water consumption per vehicle built has reduced by 32 per cent compared to 2010. In the coming year, ŠKODA intends to further improve this figure and save 35 per cent.

Every two years, ŠKODA discloses its objectives and actions relating to environmental protection in a sustainability report. It discusses all three pillars of ŠKODA’s ‘GreenFuture’ strategy: for example, ‘GreenProduct’ deals with the development of vehicles that are as environmentally friendly as possible – in terms of fuel requirements as well as materials and recycling capabilities. With ‘GreenRetail’, the brand is promoting eco-friendly operations in their dealerships and workshops. ‘GreenFactory’ brings together all of the activities that help to conserve resources during production.

Since 1993, the United Nations has called for the support of World Water Day, which takes place annually on 22 March. This year, the topic is ‘wastewater’. Alongside considerate handling of this vital resource, the organisation is reminding us of opportunities for the treatment of drinking water, as well as its safe use in agricultural irrigation or in industrial processes.

ŠKODA DESIGN: Clear and emotive design language inspired by Czech crystal glass art

› The brand-typical design language is constantly developing and evolving
› Precision and clarity are the fundamental principles of car design at ŠKODA
› An emotive design, full of character and with features inspired by crystal glass art

Mladá Boleslav, 23 March 2017 – ŠKODA DESIGN emphasises its commitment to a distinct design identity with continuous development of its design language. Harmonious proportions, clean-cut lines, bold contours and crystalline features are combined to create a design that places a focus on precision and clarity. One of the sources of inspiration for ŠKODA’s designers is Czech crystal glass art, which is characterised by outstanding craftsmanship. This yields an expressive, emotionally charged design which harmoniously combines aesthetics and functionality.

“Within just a few years, ŠKODA’s new design language has already yielded a number of sensational design studies which point towards the future of our brand,” said Karl Neuhold, Head of Exterior Design at ŠKODA. “Our objectives are clearly defined and we are now ready to present the next step.”

With harmonious proportions, clear contours, precise lines and clean-cut edges in both the exterior and interior, the ŠKODA DESIGN DNA demonstrates a strikingly clear and particularly distinct style. This DNA is an expression of the timeless elegance and modern functionality that is typical for ŠKODA cars. Equally characteristic are the powerful contours, which set the stage for a sensational interplay between light and shade that conveys dynamism and emotiveness. Crystalline structures can also be seen in headlights, tail lights and other features. Their crystalline, three-dimensional design gives them a high-quality character defined by modern technology and particular finesse.

Czech crystal glass art is internationally renowned and steeped in tradition. It combines classic manufacturing processes with modern aesthetics. Thus ŠKODA DESIGN pays respect to the cultural heritage of the brand’s homeland and pays tribute to the artists who create sculptures of timeless beauty through precision craftsmanship and attention to detail. To a large extent, their ability to produce high-quality, emotive works of art from simple, clear shapes chimes with the fundamental values of the Czech car brand, whose vehicles harmoniously combine aesthetics and functionality.

With this awareness of tradition and heritage, ŠKODA has developed a design language that distinguishes the brand and has already been applied to numerous concept studies. Charting its progress from the ŠKODA VISION D design study in 2011 through to the ŠKODA VISION C (2014) and ŠKODA VISION S (2016) concepts reveals a continuous development that is also reflected in the appearance of the brand’s most recent models and which will also decisively shape design at ŠKODA in future. In the near future, another concept study will enable ŠKODA to underline the constant evolution of the ŠKODA DESIGN.

The future is electric with the ŠKODA VISION E

› World premiere: ŠKODA’s first electric-study VISION debuts at Shanghai Motor Show 2017
› Looking to the future: VISION E gives an insight into ŠKODA’s electromobility strategy
› Wide range: Five electric vehicles in various segments by 2025
› Start: ŠKODA SUPERB with plug-in hybrid drive coming in 2019
› Autonomous Driving: ŠKODA VISION E meets level-3 requirements

Mladá Boleslav, 29 March 2017 – ŠKODA’s appearance at the Shanghai Motor Show 2017 (19 – 28 April) is characterized by electric change: With the Vision E study, the company provides its first brand-specific outlook on the future of individual mobility. The emotionally designed five-door SUV coupé can travel up to 500 kilometres on purely electric power and meets the level 3 requirements for autonomous driving. ŠKODA is intensively perusing the electrification of its model range, and will be offering five purely electric models in various segments by 2025.

Tomorrow's mobility – planning and development is in full swing at ŠKODA. The first purely electrically driven and autonomous driving concept car in the company's history embodies the brand’s interpretation of electric vehicles.
At 4,645 mm long, 1,917 mm wide and 1,550 mm tall, the ŠKODA VISION E has great road presence. Thanks to the long wheelbase of 2,850 mm, as well as the short overhangs at the front and rear, the designers have created an extremely spacious interior – as always with ŠKODA. In the future-oriented vehicle concept, the elevated seating position typical of SUV models and the generous space combine with a dynamic silhouette and gently sloping roof line in the style of a coupé.

Thanks to the system output of 225 kW, the ŠKODA VISION E accelerates instantaneously and dynamically. The top speed is 180 km/h. The powerful lithium-ion batteries and optimal recuperation allow a range of up to 500 kilometres. Thanks to intelligent management, the two electric engines cooperate with maximum efficiency and drive the ŠKODA VISION E over all four wheels. The front- and rear-wheel drive is suitably adjusted to ensure the highest degree of stability, dynamism and safety at all times.

With the VISION E, ŠKODA is also providing an outlook on the forms of autonomous driving coming soon. According to the latest surveys, around 15 percent of all new cars could be driving completely autonomously in 2030. The concept car ŠKODA VISION E achieves the prerequisites for level 3 autonomous driving: It can operate independently in traffic jams, go into autopilot on motorways, stay in lane and swerve, carry out overtaking manoeuvres, independently search for free parking spaces and park and leave parking spaces alone. To enable this, various sensors with different ranges and numerous cameras constantly monitor the traffic situation.
Electric mobility strategy

Electromobility plays a key role in the company's global growth strategy. ŠKODA develops its own vehicle concepts for purely electric mobility on the basis of the MEB Group platform.

The electrification of ŠKODA’s model range will begin as early as 2019 with the launch of the ŠKODA SUPERB with plug-in hybrid drive. ŠKODA’s first purely electric series-produced vehicle will be released shortly afterwards in 2020. By 2025, the brand will have expanded its range to include five purely electric cars in various segments.

‘What drives you?’ exhibition in Berlin showcases exciting world of the ŠKODA brand

› ŠKODA ‘What drives you?’ exhibition at the DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum in Berlin runs from 1 April to 8 July 2017
› Focus of ŠKODA exhibition on design, connectivity and sponsorship
› ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier receives Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka for the opening of the exhibition
› Star guests on four wheels: the large SUV ŠKODA KODIAQ, the upgraded bestseller ŠKODA OCTAVIA and the top model ŠKODA SUPERB
› Exhibition in the heart of ŠKODA’s largest single European market
› Strong partnership: ŠKODA has been part of Volkswagen Group for over 25 years

Mladá Boleslav / Berlin, 3 April 2017 – From 1 April to 8 July, ŠKODA is presenting its diverse brand world at the DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum in Berlin with the ‘What drives you?’ exhibition. In the modern DRIVE. Forum environment, visitors can discover the current and fascinating topics of design, connectivity and sponsorship on an area of 1,200 m2. At the opening of the exhibition, ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier received the Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka, who was in Germany on a visit.

“Today ŠKODA is one of the international volume manufacturers. As the most important single market in Europe, Germany makes a large contribution to the success of the company. That’s why we are particularly pleased to be able to present the ŠKODA brand world in Germany for the first time,” said ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier. “ŠKODA will continue its growth strategy and strengthen its brand profile further in the coming years. With the 2025 Strategy, we have set the course for the future of ŠKODA. Our SUV campaign, which we have commenced with the ŠKODA KODIAQ, is an important part of this. The brand’s first large SUV is part of the exhibition ‘What drives you?’ in addition to other exhibits on design, connectivity and sponsorship,” added Maier.

At the opening of the ‘What drives you?’ exhibition, ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier received the Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka. The head of government was visiting Berlin to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Agreement on Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between Germany and the Czech Republic. The agreement signed in 1992 has formed the basis of German-Czech relations since the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and the reunification of Germany. This is another reason why visiting the ŠKODA exhibition was important to Prime Minister Sobotka. The Czech car manufacturer and Volkswagen have been under one umbrella for a quarter of a century and have been setting new sales records ever since. This model of German-Czech friendship continues as a global success story.

At the DRIVE. Forum, the Prime Minister gained an impression of how the important Czech company presents itself outside of ŠKODA’s homeland, in Germany – the strongest single market in Europe – and how the more emotive brand image contributes to ŠKODA’s success.

In recent years, ŠKODA has caused a sensation with several design studies. The exciting, emotive design language is reflected in the latest models such as the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA or the new ŠKODA KODIAQ in particular. The ‘What drives you?’ exhibition relates the development of the new ŠKODA Design DNA, which is defined by harmonious proportions, precise lines and clean-cut edges as well as crystalline 3D design. And talking of crystalline, visitors of DRIVE. can cut their own crystal object under the professional guidance of a Bohemian glass artist and take it home with them.

How drivers benefit when a ŠKODA model is ‘always online’ is demonstrated by the topic of connectivity. From the inductive charging of smartphones to the Wi-Fi hotspot and the wide range of ŠKODA Connect services, it provides an overview of the various connectivity solutions and illustrates the innovative systems with films, for example. At the moment, ŠKODA Connect is available for the large SUV, the KODIAQ, and the upgraded bestseller, the OCTAVIA. Soon ŠKODA will also offer the system for the FABIA, RAPID and SUPERB.

As a third section besides design and connectivity, the topic of sponsorship completes the exhibition. The top events in cycling, motorsport and ice hockey that are supported by ŠKODA enthrall millions of people around the world. In 2017, the Czech brand will spur on the Tour de France for the 14th time as official sponsor and vehicle partner. ŠKODA will appear as main sponsor at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Germany and France – for the 25th time already. The brand earned an entry in the Guinness book of records for the longest-lasting sponsorship in the history of sports world championships. Furthermore, ŠKODA is among the most successful participants on rally courses around the world. In the last year alone, ŠKODA drivers celebrated numerous successes at the wheel of the ŠKODA FABIA R5. In 2016, Esapekka Lappi and Janne Ferm triumphed in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC 2). In addition, ŠKODA won continental championships in South America, the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. On top of that came nine national titles. Visitors to the DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum can see the FABIA R5 turbo all-wheel-drive vehicle at close quarters or test their driving skills thanks to virtual reality glasses in the rally simulator.

DRIVE. Forum, the stage to experience VW Group brands
The DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum is located on Friedrichstraße in the heart of Berlin, close to the Brandenburg Gate, and provides a stage for the total of twelve brands that are part of Volkswagen Group. On an area measuring over 4,500 m2, visitors can gain a whole new perspective on mobility and find out how the companies within the Group are dealing with the issues around the environment, sustainability, innovations, alternative drive systems, technology and design.

Techno Classica 2017: ŠKODA shows rare aerodynamic studies and magnificent jubilarians

› ŠKODA presents milestones of company’s 122-year history at Essen’s classic car show
› ŠKODA 935 Dynamic, POPULAR Monte Carlo coupé and convertible, RAPID ‘Dalnice’ and 130 RS A5 testify to brand’s pioneering work in  building aerodynamic vehicles
› 30 years ago ŠKODA FAVORIT paved way for one of most fruitful partnerships in automotive history
› ŠKODA 130 RS celebrated double victory at Rally Monte Carlo 1977; in Essen, other rally classics recall the brand’s glorious racing history
› Contemporary witness reports retell ŠKODA’s eventful success story

Mladá Boleslav, 4 April 2017 – ŠKODA looks back on impressive milestones in 122 years of corporate history at this year’s Techno Classica (5 to 9 April) in Essen. As one of the world’s oldest automotive manufacturers still producing cars, the traditional Czech brand will be focusing on three main topics at their stand in hall 7: Innovative aerodynamic prototypes testify to ŠKODA’s pioneering achievements and engineering skill. In 1977 the ŠKODA 130 RS achieved a highly acclaimed class double victory at the Rally Monte Carlo. Ten years later, the ŠKODA FAVORIT paved the way for one of the most fruitful partnerships in automotive history.

"At this year's Techno Classica, we are taking three special themes from the impressive history of ŠKODA," says Andrea Frydlová, head of the ŠKODA Museum at the headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. "One of the highlights at our stand in Hall 7 is the ŠKODA 935 Dynamic, which represents the brand’s development competence in the field of aerodynamics. It is the world’s only preserved specimen of this type and has been faithfully restored by our restoration department – even the hue corresponds to that of the original vehicle,” Frydlová added.

Since the pioneering days of the automobile, ŠKODA has been one of the frontrunners in development thanks to the engineers’ and craftsmen’s passion for technology.  The brand repeatedly built exceptional vehicles, which made a great contribution to the technical progress. One example of this is the ŠKODA 935 Dynamic; the brand’s first aerodynamic prototype was presented at the Prague Motor Show in 1935 and caused a sensation around the world with its particularly low air resistance. On show at the Techno Classica, ŠKODA will be presenting the unique model – once again in top form after an eventful history.  Also at the classic car show: the ŠKODA POPULAR Monte Carlo in coupé and convertible body variants. Both were far ahead of their time with elegant and aerodynamic bodies. The same is true of the rare ŠKODA RAPID ‘Dalnice’ of which only 110 were produced between 1938 and 1941. This is also one of the highlights at the ŠKODA stand. Its streamlined design was created in a wind tunnel – a rarity in this early phase of automobile construction. In combination with a 34 kW (46 hp) powerful four-cylinder, which draws its power from a 1.6-litre displacement, the model has a top speed of 120 km/h.

The ŠKODA 130 RS represents the brand’s motorsport passion in the 1970s. Visitors of the Techno Classic 2017 can experience an extraordinary variant of the legendary rear-wheel drive at the traditional Czech brand’s stand: the ŠKODA 130 RS A5, Type 738, was used in 1978 in numerous aerodynamic tests at the airport in Hoškovice, Czech Republic. With a large wing as well as the body widening towards the rear, the engineers achieved a higher contact pressure and thus improved handling at high speeds. This was also necessary for the streamlined prototype to reach its top speed of 250 km/h. The 140-hp (190 hp) four-cylinder rear-engine model had to be ventilated by large air inlets.

On the topic of the ŠKODA 130 RS, the ‘Porsche of the East' won the 1,300 cm3 class with the duo Václav Blahna / Lubislav Hlávka at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1977. In second place Milan Zapadlo / Jiří Motal rounded off the brand’s double victory perfectly. The predecessor of the current ŠKODA FABIA R5 wrote of the most glorious chapters in ŠKODA's 117-year engagement in motorsport. A ŠKODA 130 RS, as well as a ŠKODA FABIA R5 in the 1977 look  can be seen alongside other representatives of ŠKODA’s racing history at the classic-car event in Essen.

With the debut of the ŠKODA FAVORIT on 16 September, 1987, at the International Engineering Fair in Brno, the car manufacturer reinvented itself and set the course for an unprecedented success story. In the difficult final years of the socialist era, the compact model designed by the Italian studio Bertone used a transversely mounted front engine and front-wheel drive for the first time. The new model signalled a turning-point for the entire company: With its modern concept, it provided Volkswagen with a decisive reason for its commitment in the Czech Republic. At the Techno Classica 2017 in Essen, the FAVORIT 5-door model will stand alongside other representatives of the series: the estate model FORMAN quickly established itself as a family favourite.  With the FAVORIT F2 Rally, ŠKODA won the Rally Manufactures’ World Championship 1994 in the front-wheel drive category, while the FAVORIT saloon demonstrated the enormous diversity of the model range and the brand’s development potential.

ŠKODA previews interior of VISION E

› ŠKODA’s electric concept with futuristic interior
› ‘Simply Clever’: individually rotating seats make getting in and out particularly easy
› Long wheelbase and short overhangs ensure comfortable interior dimensions
› ŠKODA-typical large boot
› VISION E celebrates world premiere at Auto Shanghai 2017

Mladá Boleslav, 6 April 2017 – ŠKODA is showcasing their purely electrically driven concept car at Auto Shanghai 2017 (19 - 28 April). The futuristic design shows the characteristics of ŠKODA’s new design language for future electric vehicles. The most striking body features include counter-opening doors and the absence of a B-pillar. In the bright interior, four rotatable single seats and the missing central tunnel ensure a generous sense of space.

The seats are slightly elevated, and so ensure a good view. They can also be rotated by 20 degrees. When the doors are opened, the seats swing outwards, making getting in and out easier. After the counter-opening doors have been electrically closed, the seats return to their original position. The concept vehicle introduces this new ‘Simply Clever’ idea that provides additional comfort thanks to its ergonomically optimized design and mechanics. A particularly generous sense of space is created, as the ŠKODA VISION E does not require a middle tunnel either in the front or rear.

In addition to the cockpit screen, on which the classic vehicle data is displayed, the ŠKODA VISION E features additional screens for passengers. The centre of the dashboard houses the central touch-screen display, on which the driver and front passenger can read and operate all the important functions and services of ŠKODA Connect.

Each passenger has their own screen that can be used for numerous comfort functions such as information and entertainment. The front passenger’s monitor is located in the instrument panel, and the screens for the passengers in the rear are built into the backrests of the front seats. In addition, passengers can personalize their entertainment programme via their own touch displays. The control element for the front passenger is located in their right armrest; the passengers in the rear have theirs in the between the two individual seats.

There is an integrated phone box located in the inside of each door, with which smartphones can be inductively charged; personal settings, data and information on the smartphone can be accessed via the individual passenger’s display. Ambient lighting, which can be programmed in ten colours, is integrated into the decor strips in the doors and below the dashboard.

Under the large rear door, there is a large boot – characteristic of ŠKODA.

The front seats can be reclined and the steering wheel raised to provide maximum space utilization and comfort.

ŠKODA KODIAQ and OCTAVIA COMBI win the ‘Red Dot Award’ for exceptional product design

› The international jury awards the new ŠKODA KODIAQ SUV and the extensively upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI with the coveted Design Award for 2017
› The brand’s new design language impresses with crystalline shapes and emotiveness
› ŠKODA’s whopping eleventh ‘Red Dot Award’

Mladá Boleslav, 6 April 2017 – The international jury of experts for the ‘Red Dot Award’ declared the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI and the ŠKODA KODIAQ the winners. The extensively upgraded compact car and the brand’s new large SUV therefore win one of the most well-known and prestigious design competitions in the world. The ŠKODA models continue their winning streak; these two trophies are, incredibly, ŠKODA’s tenth and eleventh at the Red Dot Awards since 2006.

“These awards make us very proud,” said Karl Neuhold, Head of Exterior Design at ŠKODA. “We are searching for beauty in simplicity, and combine functionality with aesthetics. Our lines are clean and clear-cut, and are inspired by Bohemian crystal glass art. We call it crystalline design. These details can be found in the exterior and in the interior. It makes our models unique,” added Neuhold.

In the new ŠKODA KODIAQ and the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI, the crystalline design can be seen in the structure of the headlights, for example. Traditional Czech crystal glass art provided the inspiration for this refined design.

In typical ŠKODA style, the new large SUV as well as the compact bestseller also impress with an extraordinary amount of interior space, innovative connectivity solutions and numerous driver assistance systems, which are normally only found in higher segments. With these qualities, the two models won over the highly distinguished expert panel.

To receive the coveted Design Award, products have to impress the jury in criteria such as the degree of innovation, design quality, functionality and environmental compatibility. The independent jury for the Red Dot Awards discusses and judges each individual submission live and on-site. The ‘Red Dot’ is regarded worldwide as a seal of high-quality product design and was awarded this year for the 62nd time. Every year, around 5,000 products are entered – this time from 54 countries, making it one of the most well-known design competitions in the world. The jury of roughly 40 people is made up of independent designers, design professors and specialised journalists.

Eleven ‘Red Dot Awards’ now adorn the trophy cabinets in Mladá Boleslav. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI was the first to win the prestigious award in 2006. In 2007, the prize went to the ŠKODA ROOMSTER and the second generation of the ŠKODA FABIA; the third generation was also awarded the prize in 2015. ŠKODA also claimed a double victory in 2010 – with the ŠKODA SUPERB COMBI and the ŠKODA YETI. In 2013, the ŠKODA RAPID won, presenting the brand’s new design language for the first time. In 2014, the hatchback variant, the ŠKODA RAPID SPACEBACK, also brought home the award. The flagship, the ŠKODA SUPERB, triumphed in 2016.

Resource-saving production: New ŠKODA servo press line PXL II starts full operation

› First ŠKODA press line for aluminium body parts is one of the most modern in Europe
› Flexible production processes, shorter set-up times, 15% energy saving
› ŠKODA creates 140 new jobs in Mladá Boleslav with a second press line
› ŠKODA’s 'GreenFuture' strategy focuses on sustainable production and economical models

Mladá Boleslav, 6 April 2017 – At ŠKODA’s headquarters in Mladá Boleslav, the state-of-the-art servo press line PXL II has commenced full operation. The line enables large aluminium parts to be processed for the first time. Up to 23,000 press parts can be produced each day for various models. PXL II makes the production process significantly more flexible and reduces energy consumption by 15 percent compared to conventional systems, making it an important part of ŠKODA’s ‘GreenFuture’ environmental strategy. The car manufacturer is creating 140 new jobs in Mladá Boleslav thanks to the press line.

“The new press is an important element in our 'GreenFuture' environmental strategy, which focuses on resource-saving and sustainable production as well as energy-efficient vehicles,” says Michael Oeljeklaus, Board Member for Production and Logistics. “In continuous operation, up to 15 percent less energy is used compared to conventional press lines. The line is one of the most modern of its kind in Europe.”

The new PXL II, alongside the servo-mechanical press line PXL I, which went into operation in 2013, is the second press line at ŠKODA’s headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. Both are among the most advanced of their kind in Europe. There are only 20 presses of this type in the entire Volkswagen Group. One special feature of PXL II is the energy-recovery system, whereby the energy released during the pressing process is recuperated and reused later in the production process.

The new press line enables a particularly flexible production process: The conversion energy can be adjusted and regulated as required via 14 decentralized servomotors. Add to this the ease of use and significantly shorter set-up times; exchanging a press tool now takes less than three minutes. Each one of up to 23,000 press parts produced daily on the new line goes through quality control.

The construction work on the 11,600-square-meter hall 4 for the new press line began in late 2015, and the entire 3,000-tonne line was transported from Erfurt to Mladá Boleslav in spring 2016. The first, 561-kilometre stage to the Czech town of Mělník was completed on the Elbe River. For the final 195 kilometres to the destination, the PXL II was split up and carried on 40 trucks. The trial operation of the new press line began in December 2016.

ŠKODA focuses on sustainable production and fuel-efficient vehicles
ŠKODA bundles its environmental activities under the umbrella of the ‘GreenFuture’ strategy. Investments such as the new resource-conserving press line fall under 'GreenFactory'.  In the case of vehicle production, key figures such as energy and water consumption and the amount of waste generated per car are precisely measured and optimized.  The same applies to emissions of CO2 and volatile organic compounds (VOC), which are generated, for example, when painting the car bodies. In these parameters, ŠKODA has achieved a 45.8 percent lower environmental impact over the past six years alone – and the trend is rising. The second pillar, ‘Green Product’, focuses on new ŠKODA cars. Today, for example, they are characterized by a recycling rate of at least 85 percent of the vehicle weight.

To accelerate this positive trend, the company has set ambitious environmental goals: ŠKODA will halve the environmental impact of its production by 2018 compared to 2010. The corresponding measures cover all areas of the company. The car manufacturer has reduced power consumption by means of motion-detector lighting systems in storage rooms, as well as new lighting concepts at its loading stations. Added to this, there are special oil filter systems, which allow the lubricants required in the production process to be used for an even longer period of time.

ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS: sportsters with plenty of space for the entire family

› Exterior design with a sporty look, full-LED headlights, and RS-specific features
› High-quality interior with sports seats, generous equipment, and many ‘Simply Clever’ features
› Power output of the 2.0 TSI increased to 169 kW (230 PS), 2.0 TDI also available with all-wheel drive
› Sports chassis and red brake callipers as standard, wheels up to a diameter of 19 inches
› New technologies for infotainment, connectivity and driver assistance systems from higher segments

Mladá Boleslav / Pachfurth, 10 April 2017 – The extensively revised and upgraded top-of-the-range ŠKODA OCTAVIA models are presented: the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS and the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS. Their dynamic character is noticeable at first glance. A new front section, modified rear and a high-quality interior with black sports seats are the most striking features. Combined with all of the model range’s strengths – a unique package, an above-average amount of interior space, a level of equipment from the mid-size car segment, high-quality workmanship, and exceptional value for money. For both body variants there is a choice of two high-performance, four-cylinder engines. Whilst the 2.0 TDI diesel continues to produce 135 kW (184 PS), the power output of the 2.0 TSI petrol has increased by 7 kW (10 PS) to 169 kW (230 PS). New technologies for infotainment, connectivity and driver assistance systems emphasise the compact sports cars’ exceptional status in their segment.

Sporty exterior design
The ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS are the sporty, top-end models in the extensively revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA family. As both a hatchback and an estate they embody strong emotiveness and dynamics. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models present themselves in the globally successful model range’s new, streamlined look and create the impression of dynamism even when stationary.

The new front section with wider radiator grille comes across as masculine and sporty. The grille is enhanced by additional full-LED headlights with Adaptive Frontlight System (AFS) in the characteristic crystalline look. They create individually configured light beams for country roads, motorways, urban traffic and rain. Using the front camera, Light Assist recognises oncoming vehicles or illuminated urban streets, and – if necessary – turns the high beam on or off automatically. A lighting unit for indicators and daytime running lights runs along the bottom edge of the headlights. Fine, longitudinal lighting units run through the surfaces containing the headlights.

The fog lights also feature LED technology, can be combined with the cornering function as an option and sit in the wide lower air intake. The chrome-framed radiator grille is available in black as an option. The outer headlights produce the dipped beam. The inner headlights, tapered towards the grille, produce the high beam.

Placing radiator grille and lighting units immediately next to each other creates a graphic entity which gives all of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA models a high recognition value. Powerful contours enclose the outer air inlets, whose lower sections are filled with inserts featuring a honeycomb lattice design. With its raked appearance and high level of precision, the new design of the front section with its horizontal orientation is inspired by the motifs of Bohemian crystal glass art.

The new headlights with the contrasting dipped beam units, are just one design feature which makes the front section appear wider and more sculptural. Even the bumpers are designed with a particularly bold horizontal line. The bonnet and wings have a clear and striking design, the brand logo is even more prominent.

The wing mirrors and door handles of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS and the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS have the same colour finish as the body. For the sporty top-of-the-range model a choice of eleven colours is available, including the special colours ‘Steel Grey’ and ‘Rally Green’. In addition, customers can also opt for the ‘Black Design’ style pack.

The precise, sharply cut lines shaping the design of the comprehensively revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models continue along the sides and on the rear, and create an intensive interplay of light and shade on the surfaces.

On the tailgate, the spoiler lip (hatchback) or the roof spoiler (Combi) create design accents. With its new shape, the rear bumper appears powerful and neat thanks to subtle contours. A red reflective strip caps off the diffuser inset; the large tailpipes of the exhaust system are made from stainless steel. The rear lights are embedded in the body like jewels. The tail lights and the number plate illumination feature LED technology. The C-shaped rear lights now appear as a homogeneous lighting surface, a break separating the lines in the upper corner makes the design even more striking. Contours in the lights improve the flow separation, which enhances the vehicle’s aerodynamics.

RS abbreviation on the back
The rear of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS sports the RS logo. The abbreviation was first used in motorsport in 1974 and was introduced to the ŠKODA model range in 2000. Since then, the sporty top-of-the-range models have proven to be a great success and continue to increase in popularity. The Czech car manufacturer has sold around 200,000 RS models to date – a whopping 100,000 of which are from the third generation of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA, which was launched in 2013.

Black dominates the generously equipped interior
In terms of interior space, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS and the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS set benchmarks for the competition. Thanks to a wheelbase of 2,680 mm, the engineers have created an exceptionally generous interior, which measures 1,782 mm in length. Legroom for the rear passengers measures 73 mm – values, which are normally only achieved in the mid-size car segment. The boot is also bigger-than-average. In the hatchback, it measures in at 590 l, with the rear seats folded down it is 1,580 l. The values for the estate: 610 l and 1,740 l respectively.

The interior of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models comes across as clear, calm and focused on the essentials. Its design continues the exterior lines, the impression of generous width is further emphasised by the horizontal orientation. The surfaces and shapes are geometrically clear and taut. The round instruments are large and easy to read, and thanks to a new design, are even crisper.

The interior of the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models comes in a sporty, elegant black design; it impresses with its generous equipment, high-quality materials, precision and perfection right down to the smallest detail. The door trims are equipped with new LED ambient lighting. Slim lighting units at the upper end of the trim strips produce a discreet light which can be set to one of ten different colours. The RS sports seats have high side supports and integrated headrests – electric adjustment is available as an option.

Drive, chassis, steering, and sound – sport is coming up trumps
There is a choice of two high-performance, four-cylinder turbo engines for the intensively revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS and ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS – one petrol and one diesel.

The power delivered by the 2.0 TSI has increased by 7 kW (10 PS) to 169 kW (230 PS). Maximum torque of 350 Nm is achieved between 1,500 and 4,600 rpm. The hatchback with a manual gearbox darts from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and reaches a top speed that is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The 2.0 TSI is optionally available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Like its predecessor, the 2.0 TDI delivers 135 kW (184 PS). From as little as 1,750 rpm, it produces 380 Nm of torque – enough to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 232 km/h. Nevertheless, the diesel only consumes 4.5 litres of fuel per 100 km on average (corresponding to 119 grams of CO2/km – all figures given for hatchback with a manual gearbox). The 2.0 TDI is also optionally available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 2.0 TDI also comes as an all-wheel-drive version with a 6-speed DSG transmission.

Compared to the conventional sister models, the sports chassis lowers the RS variant’s body by 15 mm. Large brakes ensure reliable deceleration. Red brake callipers behind the standard 17-inch ‘Dorado’ wheels point to the sporty design. As an option, the alloy wheels are available in 18- and 19-inch formats.

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models are equipped with a four-link rear axle whose track, in comparison to the model before the intensive revision, has been widened by 30 mm to 1,544 mm. A MacPherson design is used for the front axle.

Progressive steering and the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with XDS+ electronic differential lock are further components. One highlight of the chassis in the comprehensively revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models is the adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC). Electrically operated valves adjust the dampers’ settings depending on the preference of the driver, who can choose one of three modes – Comfort, Normal and Sport. In addition, DCC also contributes to active safety by automatically switching to Sport mode in dangerous situations. In doing so, it ensures greater stability, better traction and shorter braking distances.

Performance Mode Select with Performance Sound Generator (optional) allows the driver to change the steering characteristics, the operation of the dual-clutch transmission and the settings for other systems in the Normal, Eco, Sport and Individual modes. The settings are saved on the optional personalisable key.

Driver assistance systems
The wide range of driver assistance systems featured in the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA models includes several that are otherwise only available in higher vehicle segments. All of the systems serve to make driving even safer and more relaxed.

Newly available features include Front Assist with Predictive Pedestrian Protection, Blind Spot Detect, Rear Traffic Alert, Trailer Assist and Manoeuvre Assist.

Front Assist with Predictive Pedestrian Protection is designed for use in urban traffic. The system initiates an emergency stop at speeds between 10 and 60 km/h if a pedestrian dangerously attempts to cross the path of the car. The Predictive Pedestrian Protection function is part of Front Assist including the City Emergency Brake function. Both systems work in conjunction with Crew Protect Assist, which closes the windows and sunroof in the event of an impending accident and tensions the seat belts for the driver and passengers. Its new radar sensor is incorporated into the radiator grille.

The new Blind Spot Detect system makes changing lane safer. To do so, it uses two radar sensors in the tailgate with a reach of approximately 20 metres. If another vehicle rapidly approaches from behind or is already in the blind spot, an LED warning light illuminates in the housing of the wing mirror on the corresponding side. If the driver uses the indicator despite the warning, the LED flashes several times at short intervals.

Rear Traffic Alert is another new feature and makes reversing out of parking spaces or drives safer. The system detects vehicles approaching from the sides very early on and warns the driver in three stages: visually, acoustically and finally – if necessary – it automatically applies the brakes. The information for the system is provided by Blind Spot Detect’s tailgate radar sensors. Rear Traffic Alert is a key component of the Blind Spot Detect system.

Another new feature in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA model range is Trailer Assist, which makes reverse manoeuvres with a trailer in tow easier. Using the wing mirrors’ turn-switch, the driver first sets the angle they would like to use for reversing. Then he gently applies the accelerator. The system adjusts the steering wheel to the chosen course and manoeuvres the trailer safely into the intended space or position. If the angle between the car and the trailer becomes too large, a warning signal is emitted. In critical situations, the system applies the car’s brakes automatically, slowing the car and trailer.

Manoeuvre Assist, which is also new, provides help when performing tricky movements without a trailer. This system applies the brakes automatically as soon as it detects an obstacle behind or in front of the vehicle. Manoeuvre Assist and Trailer Assist are based on the improved functionality of the ultrasonic parking sensors.

Proven assistance systems have retained their place on board the revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps the driver to maintain the desired gap between them and the car in front at a preset speed. The newly developed radar sensor, which is integrated within the radiator grille, is now active up to a speed of 210 km/h.

Lane Assist helps the driver to stay in lane by gently adjusting the steering where necessary. The fatigue detection system (Driver Alert) recognises when the driver’s concentration is waning and, if necessary, prompts them to take a break. The camera-based Travel Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition displays speed limits and other road signs as images on the in-car computer as well as on the navigation system display. Park Assist can automatically steer the vehicle into parking spaces and can also take over when manoeuvring out of parallel parking spaces. Light Assist, which automatically regulates the use of high and dipped beam, rounds off the offering.

Passive safety remains at a high level in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA model range. Five three-point seat belts working in complete harmony with up to nine airbags ensure safety on board. These include front airbags, front side airbags, side head airbags, rear side airbags and a knee airbag for the driver. Child seats can be secured using Isofix and additional top tether anchor points. Tyre pressure monitoring also comes as standard.

Infotainment and ŠKODA Connect
Just like all variants of the model range, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models also have the latest generation of infotainment systems on board. Their capacitive touch displays come in a glass design (except for the standard Swing music system); when starting the ignition, a special RS start screen appears. The top-of-the-range version is the Columbus navigation system with a 9.2-inch monitor, Wi-Fi hotspot and optional LTE module, with which occupants can be ‘always online’.

The new mobile online services of ŠKODA Connect are divided into two categories: with the Infotainment Online services providing information and entertainment, and the Care Connect services providing assistance and remote access. Via the new ŠKODA Connect portal, the customer can also use these services on their home computer. The driver can configure services as well as transfer destinations, routes and points of interest (POIs) to the vehicle. The data for the Care Connect services is transferred via a SIM card with high-speed LTE that is already installed in the vehicle.

One of the highlights of the Infotainment Online portfolio is the Online Traffic Information service, which displays live traffic on the chosen route and suggests suitable alternative routes in the event of a traffic jam. The services provide further helpful information on petrol stations, parking spaces, news and the weather.

There are further services exclusively available for the Columbus system: Google Earth™ integrates the navigation route into the interactive world map with its photo-realistic map views. The Online Map Update service makes new map material available on a regular basis. With the Online POI search (Voice Search), the driver can look for places which interest them via voice control.

The Emergency Call function is available as an optional extra with the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models. If a restraint system has been activated following an accident, the system establishes a voice and data connection to a dedicated emergency call centre and transfers all of the necessary information. An employee at the emergency call centre then initiates the appropriate support measures and, where necessary, sends an emergency vehicle to the site of the accident. The driver and passengers can also trigger the Emergency Call manually via a button in the roof module.

Further online services in the Care Connect portfolio work using the new ŠKODA Connect app on a smartphone. The driver can access information about the vehicle’s condition on their smartphone or send their route planner to the car via the app. With the new remote services, the driver can, for example, remotely access information on whether the lights are on, whether the doors are locked, how much fuel is in the tank and other aspects using the Vehicle Status service. The Parking Location function can direct the driver to their car. The Honk & Flash function, whereby the car sounds its horn and flashes its lights, makes it even easier to find the vehicle. The Area Notification, Online Anti-Theft Alarm and Speed Notification functions inform the owner if their vehicle is being moved in a manner which they have not permitted. The Route Statistics function rounds off the range of remote services.

The SmartLink+ platform incorporates smartphone apps and brings Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLinkTM into the ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models. As soon as the customer connects their smartphone to the USB port, the relevant environment opens. The range of apps that can be integrated via SmartLink+ in different variants which have been specially adapted for the vehicle is regularly updated. The availability of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay may vary depending on country.

Even more ‘Simply Clever’ solutions
The ŠKODA OCTAVIA model range has always provided practical support for everyday life with its ‘Simply Clever’ features. With the revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA RS models, a wealth of new features rounds off the range of clever solutions.

Drinks holders in the centre console allow for PET bottles to be opened using just one hand – the holders’ serrated shape secures the base of a bottle in place.

In the boot of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI RS, you’ll find a removable LED torch; its battery will recharge automatically whilst driving.

The personalisable key, which is available as an optional extra is also new. Up to three users can save their individual preferences to its memory, ranging from air conditioning and seat settings to the audio system’s volume and their Driving Mode Select profile.

Further typical ‘Simply Clever’ features include the heated steering wheel and two USB ports in the rear.

ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT: Practical all-rounder also for off-road trips

› Robust all-rounder with an off-road look and comprehensive equipment, generous space and excellent driving characteristics
› Also confident off-road: all-wheel drive as standard, increased ground clearance and larger departure angle
› Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, heated multifunction leather steering wheel and Thermo-Flux seat covers
› Three powerful and efficient engines: a 1.8 TSI petrol engine with a power output of 132 kW (180 PS) as well as a 2.0 TDI producing 110 kW (150 PS) or 135 kW (184 PS)

Mladá Boleslav / Pachfurth, 10 April 2017 – Silver-coloured underbody protection, protective side mouldings and black roof rails identify the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT as a robust all-rounder at first glance. The latest all-wheel-drive technology, a departure angle that has been increased to 14.5 degrees and 30 mm more ground clearance also allow off-road trips. The many ‘Simply Clever’ features on offer contribute to the high level of practicality. There is a choice of three engines available – one petrol and two diesel engines with a power output ranging from 110 kW (150 PS) to 135 kW (184 PS). The two most powerful engines are coupled with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) as standard.

Exterior design

The all-rounder in the model range is based on the extensively revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA COMBI and is presented with a distinctive off-road appearance. Its unique character can be recognised at first glance by the silver-coloured underbody protection at the front and rear as well as by the protective side mouldings which are now body-coloured. The Rough-Road package is also part of the standard equipment and features plastic coverings for the undercarriage as well as the brake and fuel lines. Other typical features include the Scout-design moulding on the bumpers, wheel arches and door sills, the aluminium-effect wing mirrors, the 17-inch alloy wheels and a wider rear track.
The ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT is also equipped with the new front section for the successful model range. The wider, dynamic radiator grille is enhanced by additional full-LED headlights with Adaptive Frontlight System. The crystalline look of the lighting units, which incorporates and reflects elements of Bohemian crystal glass art, is typical of the modern ŠKODA Design. The outer headlights produce the dipped beam. The inner lighting units, tapered towards the grille, produce the high beam. The headlights create individually configured light beams for country roads, motorways, urban traffic and rain. The bottom edge of the headlights contains a lighting unit that provides the indicators and daytime running lights. Using the front camera, Light Assist detects oncoming vehicles or illuminated urban streets and – if necessary – dips the beam automatically.
The fog lights, which sit in the wide lower air intake, also feature LED technology and can be combined with the cornering function as an option.

The visual combination of the radiator grille and lighting units creates a graphic entity which is typical for the new look and also ensures high recognition value. The outer air inlets have powerful contours; the lower section is filled with inserts featuring a honeycomb lattice design. The bumpers also have a clear horizontal orientation. The bonnet and wings have a clear and striking design; the brand logo above the radiator grille and on the tailgate has been further refined. The horizontal design of the front section emphasises the robust character of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT, as do the black ends of the underbody protection and the elements on the wheel arches and sills, which are also black.

The sides and rear of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT are characterised by precise, sharply cut lines that create a powerful interplay between light and shade on the surfaces.
The rear section appears powerful and bold thanks to its subtle contours. The tail lights and number plate illumination feature LED technology. The C-shaped tail lights that appear as a homogeneous lighting surface are typical of the brand. A break separates the lines in the upper corner and makes the design even more striking. Contours in the lights, which improve the flow separation, ensure better aerodynamics.

The ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT is available in 13 body colours, including the new metallic shade Maple Brown.
Comfortable interior, generous boot space

The external dimensions of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT have changed only slightly from those of its predecessor. The length has grown by 2 mm to 4,687 mm; however, the rear track has been increased by 30 mm to 1,539 mm. The wheelbase of 2,680 mm, which is unusually large for this vehicle segment, has allowed an interior to be created that is one of the largest amongst its competitors. Occupants in the front and rear seats enjoy generous leg-, elbow and headroom.

Besides the generous dimensions, excellent layout, high-quality materials and numerous new interior features, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT also impresses thanks to its raised seat position, which guarantees a good view. The height and width of the interior are further emphasised by the horizontal design approach. The design of the large and easy-to-read round instruments has been revised, making them even more crisp. Numerous storage solutions in the interior increase its practicality.
Comfort in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT has also been further improved with, for example, the heated three-spoke leather steering wheel with multifunctional buttons, the illumination of the front and rear interior door handles and the LED ambient lighting in the decorative door trims, which can be set to one of ten colours. Other standard comfort features include heated washer jets, heated front seats and special seat covers with Thermo-Flux technology, which are particularly breathable and have double the level of air and moisture permeability of conventional seat covers. The comfort specification is complemented by the standard cruise control with a Speedlimiter function and the electrically operated front and rear side windows.
The generously sized boot has a volume of 610 l, which can be increased to 1,740 l with the rear seats folded down. Even bulky items can be transported with ease thanks to the 1,010-mm-wide opening. The door sills bear the Scout lettering. The Scout logo is stitched onto the seats, as well as onto the leather steering wheel and the gearstick knob.

A choice of three engines
The car comes with a choice of three extremely efficient engines, all of which meet the EU6 emission standards. The petrol engine used in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT is a turbocharged, direct-injection TSI engine with four cylinders. The powerful 1.8 TSI produces 132 kW (180 PS), offers a maximum torque of 280 Nm and is coupled with a 6-speed DSG transmission as standard, enabling the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 216 km/h. Maximum torque of 280 Nm is achieved between 1,350 and 4,500 rpm. Average fuel consumption per 100 km is 6.8 l.
The 2.0-l diesel is available in two different power variants. Both are turbocharged, direct-injection TDIs with four-cylinders as well as four-valve technology, and impress with distinct smooth running and powerful torque. The variant that produces 110 kW (150 PS) is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or the newly developed 7-speed DSG. The manual version of the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds and its top speed is 207 km/h. Maximum torque of 340 Nm is achieved between 1,750 and 3,000 rpm. Average fuel consumption is about 5.0 l.
The top-of-the-range diesel engine fitted with a 6-speed DSG transmission as standard delivers 135 kW (184 PS), meaning that the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and has a top speed of 219 km/h. Maximum torque of 380 Nm is achieved between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm, whilst average fuel consumption is about 5.1 l per 100 km.

All-wheel drive as standard
The ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT comes with all-wheel drive as standard, which provides a critical increase in traction and safety. The central component of the system is a hydraulic multi-plate clutch with electronic control, which is positioned in front of the rear axle and stands out due to its compact design as well as its low weight. The torque distribution to all four wheels always depends on the driving situation with a control unit constantly calculating the ideal amount of driving torque for the rear axle.
In addition, the front and rear axles are equipped with the XDS+ electronic differential lock, that ensures pulling away is easy on any surface and that the handling is even safer when cornering quickly. XDS+ does this by gently slowing down the inner wheels to transmit more power to the outer wheels, thereby guaranteeing increased agility when cornering.
The multi-link rear axle distinguishes itself by providing a high level of comfort and good handling. The consistent separation of longitudinal and transverse stiffness is a fundamental design principle. The rear track has been widened by 30 mm and is now 1,539 mm.
On the front axle, a MacPherson design with lower triangular wishbones is used. The use of high-strength steel for the wishbone and an innovative bionic design for the pivot bearing saves on weight. The centrally positioned front axle subframe is designed to maximise transverse stiffness. Besides the front axle components, the frame also includes the steering and parts of the engine mount. The rack-and-pinion steering has an efficient electro-mechanical servo drive and the large brakes ensure superior deceleration.

Special ‘Simply Clever’ features
The ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT also offers numerous ‘Simply Clever’ features, typical of the brand. For example, new additions include the bottle holder in the centre console, that allows PET bottles to be opened with one hand, and the removable LED torch in the boot whose battery recharges automatically while driving. Additional features that have been specifically developed for the Combi are the adjustable false boot floor, the multifunctional shelf under the boot cover, the boot barrier net, four bag hooks, two boot lights and a 12-volt socket in the boot. Alongside the personalisable keys, which can save individual settings for up to three people, the portfolio of ‘Simply Clever’ features also includes a heated steering wheel, two USB ports in the rear and folding tray tables on the backs of the front seats.
New driver assistance systems
The new driver assistance systems in the revised ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT provide increased safety and their functionality and scope exceeds the usual offering in this vehicle segment.

Front Assist with City Emergency Brake function has been enhanced with the Predictive Pedestrian Protection function. The system increases safety in urban traffic by performing an emergency stop at speeds between 10 and 60 km/h if a pedestrian dangerously attempts to cross the path of the car. Front Assist, including City Emergency Brake and Predictive Pedestrian Protection, works together with Crew Protect Assist, which closes the windows and sunroof at lightning speed in the event of an impending accident and tensions the seat belts for the driver and passengers.
Blind Spot Detect, which makes changing lanes safer, is another new feature. Thanks to two radar sensors at the rear, Blind Spot Detect can detect vehicles that are approaching rapidly from the rear or that are already in the blind spot. The system then warns the driver with an LED light in the housing of the corresponding wing mirror. If the driver uses the indicator anyway, the LED flashes several times at short intervals.

The Rear Traffic Alert system, which monitors and safeguards when reversing out of parking spaces or driveways, is also newly available. Rear Traffic Alert detects cars that are crossing the space or the driveway, warns the driver first visually, then acoustically, and eventually initiates braking if necessary. The information for the system is provided by Blind Spot Detect’s tailgate radar sensors.
Manoeuvring cars and trailers is not to everyone’s taste. The new Trailer Assist feature in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT is a real help when doing this. Trailer Assist makes reverse manoeuvres with a trailer into an easy exercise. In order to do so, the driver first sets the angle they would like to use for reversing using the wing mirrors’ turn-switch. Subsequently, the driver only has to accelerate gently. The system does the rest: it adjusts the steering wheel to the chosen course and manoeuvres the trailer safely into the intended space or position. If the angle between the vehicle and the trailer becomes too large, a warning signal is emitted. In critical situations, the system slows the trailer down automatically.

As the name suggests, Manoeuvre Assist, which is also new, provides help when performing tricky manoeuvres without a trailer. This system applies the vehicle’s brakes as soon as it detects an obstacle behind or in front of the vehicle. Manoeuvre Assist and Trailer Assist use the improved functionality of the ultrasonic parking sensors for their interventions.
Furthermore, the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT features numerous proven assistance systems. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps the driver to maintain the desired gap from the vehicle in front at a preset speed. The newly developed radar sensor, integrated within the radiator grille, now works at speeds of up to 210 km/h.
Lane Assist helps the driver to stay in lane by gently adjusting the steering where necessary. The fatigue detection system recognises a reduction in the driver’s concentration and prompts them to take a break. Travel Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition displays speed limits and other roads signs on the in-car computer or on the navigation screen. Park Assist autonomously steers the vehicle into parking spaces and if necessary, can also take over when manoeuvring out of parallel parking spaces. Light Assist automatically regulates the high beam.
The level of passive safety in the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT is still very high. Up to nine airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver as standard, are part of the equipment that makes this happen. Child seats can be secured using Isofix, as well as top tether anchor points. The tyre pressure monitor completes the package.

Infotainment and ŠKODA Connect
The latest generation of infotainment systems is available for the ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT. Their capacitive touch displays come in a glass design. The top-of-the-range version is the Columbus navigation system, which comes with a 9.2-inch screen, a Wi-Fi hotspot and an optional LTE module that allows occupants to be ‘always online’.
The new mobile online services from ŠKODA Connect are divided into two categories: the Infotainment Online services providing information and entertainment, and the Care Connect services providing assistance and remote access to the vehicle. Via the new ŠKODA Connect portal, these services can also be accessed from the customer’s home computer. The driver can configure various services as well as transfer destinations, routes and points of interest (POI) to the car. The data for the Care Connect services is transferred via a SIM card with high-speed LTE that is already installed in the vehicle.

Online Traffic Information displays the current traffic flow on the chosen route and suggests suitable alternatives in the event of a traffic jam. The services provide further helpful information on petrol stations, parking spaces, news and the weather.
Additional services are exclusively available for the Columbus system: Google Earth™ integrates the navigation route into the interactive world map with its photo-realistic map views. The Online Map Update service provides the customer with new maps at regular intervals. Using Online POI-Search (Voice), the driver can use voice control to search for locations that interest them.
Emergency Call features as standard in the upgraded ŠKODA OCTAVIA SCOUT. If a restraint system has been activated following an accident, the system establishes a voice and data connection to a dedicated emergency call centre and transfers all of the necessary information. An employee at the emergency call centre initiates the necessary support measures and, if required, sends an emergency vehicle to the site of the accident. The driver and passengers can also trigger the Emergency Call manually via a button in the roof module.

Other Care Connect services work using the new ŠKODA Connect app on a smartphone. The driver can access information about the vehicle’s condition on their smartphone or send their route planner to the car via the app. The new remote services allow the driver to remotely access information about the lights and doors, how much fuel is in the tank, and other information. The Parking Location function directs the driver to their car. The Honk & Flash function makes it even easier to find the car, by sounding the car’s horn and flashing its lights. Area Notification, the Online Anti-Theft Alarm and Speed Notification functions inform the owner if their car is used by a third party in a way which they have not permitted.
The range of apps that can be integrated via SmartLink+ in variants which have been specially adapted for the vehicle is regularly updated. The availability of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay may vary depending on country.

In March, the deliveries rose by 2.1% to 108,500 units (March 2016: 106,300). This was the best sales result in one month in the company’s 122-year history. ŠKODA models were particularly popular in Europe.

“ŠKODA successfully continued along its path to growth in the first quarter. This forms a good basis for further growth in the coming months,” says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “The record figures are the result of an attractive model range and an outstanding team performance. We expect the current market launch of the SKODA KODIAQ to provide further momentum. The interest of customers in our new large SUV continues unabated. 4,700 vehicles have already reached their new owners in the first weeks.”

In Western Europe, ŠKODA deliveries increased by 7.9% in March to 53,600 vehicles (March 2016: 49,600 vehicles). In the first quarter, sales in this region rose by 6.6% to 122,600 units (2016: 115,000 vehicles). In Germany, the brands strongest European single market, ŠKODA’s sales increased by 4.5% in March to 17,100 vehicles (March 2016: 16,300 vehicles) and in the first quarter by 4.9% to 40,800 vehicles (2016: 38,900 vehicles). In the first three months, ŠKODA recorded double-digit growth rates in Italy (6,700 vehicles, +20.9%), Austria (6,200 vehicles, +19.1%), Sweden (4,000 vehicles +13.4%) and France (6,200 vehicles +10.6%).

In ŠKODA’s home market, the Czech Republic, sales in March increased by 9.8% to 8,800 vehicles (March 2016: 8,000 vehicles), and in the first quarter by 12.3% to 24,600 vehicles (2016: 21,900 vehicles). The brand grew strongly in Poland (17,500 vehicles, +18.1%), Hungary (3,000 vehicles, +16.0%) and Slovakia (5,000 vehicles, +13.8%).

In Eastern Europe excluding Russia, ŠKODA grew by 9.0% in March to 3,300 vehicles (March 2016: 3,000 vehicles). The Czech producer closed the first quarter with an increase of 14.2% and 8,500 deliveries (2016: 7,400 vehicles). In this period, deliveries to Ukraine rose by 114.7% to 1,200 vehicles (2016: 600 vehicles).

In Russia, ŠKODA recorded a slight increase of 0.7% to 4,900 vehicles (March 2016: 4,800 vehicles) despite persistently challenging market conditions. Deliveries in the entire first quarter rose more significantly by 1.9% to 12,700 vehicles (first quarter 2016: 12,500 vehicles).

In China, the brand’s largest market worldwide, ŠKODA delivered 21,800 vehicles to customers in March (March 2016: 25,600 vehicles; -14.8%).The manufacturer sold 66,800 vehicles in the first quarter of this year (first quarter 2016: -11.4%). This development is largely due to tax increases in various vehicle segments where ŠKODA is also represented. The company anticipated this development and expects that demand will return to normal in the second quarter.

In terms of model series, the models ŠKODA SUPERB, RAPID and FABIA are driving the strong growth rates. The brand’s flagship, the ŠKODA SUPERB, increased by 18.9% to 38,300 deliveries in the first quarter. Sales of the ŠKODA RAPID series increased during the same period by 6.8% to 51,800 units. The small car FABIA recorded substantial growth in the first quarter (54,600 vehicles, +10.2%). ŠKODA CITIGO deliveries fell by 0.3% to 9,700 vehicles in the first three months due to the upcoming model change. Similarly, sales of the SKODA YETI (21,500, -20.0%), the successor of which will be presented to the public in the middle of May. As expected, deliveries of the SKODA OCTAVIA fell in the first quarter by 6.3% to 103,000 vehicles. This is due to the ongoing introduction of the updated model and the associated – temporarily limited – model availability in certain markets.
The ŠKODA KODIAQ is also being gradually introduced in the markets. 4,700 of the brand’s new large SUV have already been delivered to customers.

At the Shanghai motor show 2017, which takes place from 19 to 28 April, ŠKODA will be presenting their brand-specific outlook on the future of individual mobility with the concept study VISION E for the first time. The emotive five-door SUV coupé can travel up to 500 kilometres on electric alone and reaches Level 3 of autonomous driving.
